Twenty per cent of Anglo American Platinum’s (Amplats’) long-standing Twickenham platinum mine project, in Limpopo province, has been completed to date.

The project began in February 2008 but, as a result of capitaldeferral, the project schedule was extended by two years, whichtranslates into full 250 000 t/m mine production and concentratortreatment by 2019. As far as could be determined the project team isengaging with review teams to prepare for the presentation of therestated investment proposal to the Anglo American board by theend of this year. The development, which is designed to contribute180 000 oz/y of refined platinum at steady state, forms part of thedecision to expand current operations on the eastern limb of theBushveld Complex. The aim is to mine the upper group two (UG2)reef horizon. A centrally placed 250 000 t/m UG2 concentrator plantwill be constructed and this portion of the project will be submittedfor approval later this year. The project is located about 50 km fromBurgersfort about 2.5 km to the west of the R37 to Polokwane.

The plan is for each shaft complex to be accessed through acluster of three declines: one personnel and material decline, oneconveyor decline and one chairlift decline. The mining method isbased on conventional breast stoping with tracked footwall haulageservices. The engineering and infrastructure design will cater forvarious infrastructure buildings, associated infrastructure, wastedumps, reef stockpiles, security infrastructure, shaft access roads, drainage control, shaft terraces, bulk materials handling, water andelectrical reticulation and the haulage road to the concentrator.

The mine has been established down to three levels, with anadditional four to be created, and will ramp up to steady state by2019. The surface infrastructure to support the mining ramp is beingconstructed and members of the local community are being trainedto make up the labour force.

The market has changed significantly since the control budgetestimate for capital expenditure was determined at the height of thecommodity cycle in 2007. Besides Twickenham, the current poorstate of the global economy and lower platinum prices are alsoimpacting on the Thembelani and Styldrift mine projects, in theNorth West province. Skills constraints, employment and retrainingchallenges as well as rising materials, consumables and equipmentcosts are causing project budget concerns.

Chronic illnesses are diseases that last for a long timeor come back over time. According to the World HealthOrganisation (WHO), chronic diseases are the leadingcause of death in the world. HIV/Aids, heart disease, cancer, diabetes and asthma are all examples of chronicillness, and all of these can lead to depression.

The problem with chronic illnesses is that they canbadly affect the way you live your life. You may not beable to do things you want to do, be in pain a lot of thetime, not be able to work and, of course, you need tosee doctors regularly. If a person has a chronic illness, itis very important that they take care of themselves bothphysically and mentally.

“Living with a chronic illness is tough because otherpeople don’t always understand how you feel or thatthere are some days when you can’t take part inactivities or just don’t have the energy to get out of bed,”says the South African Depression and Anxiety Group’s(SADAG’s) Cassey Chambers. “For many people, suffering from a chronic illness is very lonely and theywithdraw from friends and family. This can lead todepression.” People with a chronic medical illness havea 40% risk of developing depression. Early diagnosisand sticking to treatment are really important, as issupport. People living with chronic illness can still havea good quality of life. Talking and learning about chronicillness can really help everyone deal with it a lot better. The Driekop Depression and Chronic Illness Support

Platinum Australia went into a trading halt on the AustralianStock Exchange (ASX) on Monday on news that it wasreviewing its Smokey Hills operation near Burgersfort inlight of deteriorating operating conditions.

In a statement to the ASX, Platinum Australia said thatdifficult operating conditions have prevented the SmokeyHills mine from reaching its forecasted production levels.June production was also affected by a four-day safety shutdown, with tons milled now only expected to reach some 29000 tons in June, compared with a forecast of 47 980 tons.

Platinum Australia said that in light of the low platinumprices and the current operating conditions at the mine, thecompany would undertake an “urgent review” of theoperations to determine a future strategy and the viability ofthe mine, as commodity prices were not expected toimprove in the medium term. The review would, accordingto the company, be completed within a week.

The news of the Smokey Hills review comes in the wakeof other platinum companies that are also curtailing outputand cutting back on projects.

The Xstrata-Merafe Chrome Venture is operating at half of its capacity as higher power costs and mininginflation eats into margins, Merafe Resources said on Tuesday.

Merafe, which holds a 50% stake in the venture with Xstrata, said in a statement it will only beoperating eight out of twenty furnaces from June to August, South Africa’s winter months.

“Ferrochrome production for the winter months is envisaged to be in the region of 40% to 50% ofinstalled capacity,’ it said.

The ferrochrome producer in March said it struck a deal with state-owned utility Eskom to shut seven ofits furnaces until the end of May and allow Eskom to buy back the energy that the plants would haveotherwise consumed.

These shutdowns were expected to have cost the company 130 000 tons of production in the first andsecond quarters. The joint venture’s total ferrochrome production in 2011 was 263 000 t, whichrepresented 65% of installed capacity.

Collecting dryfirewood in this area is quite common aselectricity is not available everywhere andexpensive on top of it. The reason, however, for cutting trees with green wooddown for this reason, baffled thenewspaper’s personnel. Thousands ofother trees, including dry wood areavailable in the vicinity. The concrete tableand chairs has also been vandalisedextensively and the resting place is now afilthy dumping ground for all sorts of stuff.(Maybe invite them to a tree plantingceremony? - Editor)

By hom is Anroné, Mianke en Zaninke.

Mr Justice Mokgotho said: “I agree withZuma, the minority still gets the money, but there is also a crisis with a lot ofcorruption”.

Mr Duncan Mabu and Mr Solomon Saletola said: “We agree with President JacobZuma, the economy is still in white hands”.

Me.

Dis‘n korrupte spul”.

Mr Albert Nkuna and Mr Simon Mabilo said: ‘The problem is corruption. That is whyservice delivery is poor. The leadership take the money they have to deliver serviceswith and put it in their pockets”.

Mr Joshua Kgorutle said: “Incompetentpeople, corruption and partially a whitehold on the economy are the reasons forno service delivery. Competent peoplemust be hired. They must not be lenienttowards eradicating crime”. With him isAngela.

Mr Simon Ledwaba and Ms Eulenda Ledwaba said: “We don’t think our economy isstill in white people’s hands. At the top there are black people who only care forthemselves and their families. It is everyone for himself”.

Daarom isdienslewering stadig”.

The ANC hosted a policy indaba in Midrandthis week. More than 3000 delegates attendedthe event. On Tuesday, President Jacob Zumaofficially opened the conference. He said thata “radical shift towards economic and socialtransformation” and “a militant programme ofaction” was required to deal with poverty, inequality an unemployment. “While manyhave received basic services, many more arestill waiting for electricity, water, sanitation, proper roads, trains that run on time, decenthousing as well as clinics that have medicalstaff and medicines in certain areas” he added. One of the main reasons for the slow pacetowards economic freedom according to himis because “the ownership of the economy isstill primarily in the hands of white males, as ithas always been”.His words “the conference must deliberate onhow the state can obtain an equitable sharefrom the mineral resources and howcommunities can benefit more from thisresource” was as close as he came tomentioning nationalisation. We asked readers what they thought about hiscomments regarding service delivery andeconomic freedom.

Is service delivery slow because

Mr Simbarashe Kampariro said: “Withoutwhite people nothing is going to be donehere. White people work very hard todevelop this country and they have theability to develop it. They must get morewhite people involved then there will bebetter service delivery”.

Jy moet gewoonlik ook ‘n swartvennoot of aandeelhouer hê”.

Me. By hulle isRuvan.

Mr Ronny Chiloane and Ms Thabile Chiloane said: “Incompetency is the problem. Theyare focussed on eating the money rather than spending it on service delivery. The ANCis starting to be greedy. They focus only on themselves and development is focused onurban areas rather than rural areas. Education is the key to success. We should startby being educated first. When we are not educated, there is problem. We hope they willhave a plan in place for the Limpopo grade 12 students who only received their textbooks now”.

Me.

Mr Ishmael Maphanga said: “In terms ofservice delivery the problem is theleaders of the ANC themselves. They aretaking the money to their pockets and notto the people. If a hungry black persongets on top he first take care of his familyand not of the people. He makes himselfrich. Wise men have only one woman”.

Mr Ishmael Lethamaga said: “He was notright. Most of the companies doing theservice delivery are owned by blackpeople, but still the delivery is very poor.On the other side white people respecttime, not like us”.

Mr Cedrick Lamola said: “What I saw inSouth Africa is that top people come to usand say vote for us. Then after we vote forthem they never come back to us - theygo to their offices and get lots of money. That is the major problem”.

Ms Maureen Selelepoo said: “Where I amstaying at Morapaneng village nearMoroke I am fetching water in a river. Idon’t know, but I think they are eating themoney instead of giving us services”.

Left: Mr Joseph Madingwane said: “Thereason for not having proper servicedelivery is none of what he said. He can lendmoney to other countries like that R200thousand million he promised to the EU, butwhen it comes to the issues of this countryhe is not interested. Our government isfacing a very serious problem. If ourpresident was really following a budget forservice delivery, he would have everythingaudited every year. He must serve his ownpeople, not those of other countries. It alsoseems like South Africa has no limit forwelcoming foreign people into the country. These people take the jobs of our people”.
