Pi Kappa Alpha Iota Iota Chapter – Michigan State University
Winter Edition 2011 – www.msupikes.org
Letter from the President Welcome to the Iota Iota Chapter of Pi Kappa Alpha. Please take the time to browse through our newsletter to learn more about who we are as men of Pi Kappa Alpha. As a house, we strive to carry on the strong tradition of the Iota Iota chapter at Michigan State University, and are constantly working to grow towards the next level. Our focus is developing leaders and positive character traits that will continue for a lifetime, all while enjoying the undergraduate life and the experiences that come with it. As a house, we have developed issued newsletters to inform families, alumni, and members on housing improvements and future events. I certainly hope this newsletter serves a purpose for you. If you have any questions or comments regarding Pi Kappa Alpha, please do not hesitate to contact me. In Deepest Sincerity, Stefan Figurski

Scholars As of the spring semester of 2011, the Iota Iota chapter has achieved an average cumulative grade point average greater than 3.4, giving us the second-‐highest GPA among all fraternities at Michigan State. The chapter stresses the importance of academic success throughout the recruitment process to prospective members of the chapter. Active members have also gotten in to the habit of walking together to the Union or the Main Library to study together or even tutor one another.
Our chapter does not overlook the scholastic portion of the college experience, and feels that one of the major portions of its success has been due to educating new and active members on the benefits of a balanced life – both socially and academically.
301 Charles Street East Lansing, MI 48823
Leaders During the 2010 calendar year, Brother Brian White served as the Vice President of Communication for the Interfratenity Council; representing all of the men in the Greek community at Michigan State University.
In 2011, Brother Joseph Ferstle was elected into Brian White’s former position on the Interfraternity council, and has carried on much of the progress which Brian made. Both of these men have served as ambassadors for PIKE to the University and the rest of the Greek community.
Brother Addison Doyle also founded the MSU Rotaract Club. Each year, Rotaract organizes an event called “Hold ‘em for Hunger”, which is a poker tournament which benefits children on subsidized lunch programs.

Since the property at 301 Charles was purchased, active members have done many great things to improve the quality of our chapter house by sponsoring improvements and renovations of the house. In the fall of 2009, a group of actives led by Brothers Derek Mankin and Tommy Wooderson constructed a bar which has become the centerpiece of “The Nasty Oak”, which plays host to all of our chapter’s social events. The Nasty Oak has played a large part in the success of our chapter – aiding in not only social events, but in recruitment as well. Also, the summer of 2010 also saw several other changes to the house with the renovation of two previously unused rooms into a pool room – which features a pool table, a fireplace, a TV, and a trophy case (also made by Derek Mankin and Tommy Wooderson) – and a brotherhood room – with stadium seating and big screen TV. Due to the manual efforts of active members, these renovations were able to occur with a very minimal financial impact and have had an extremely positive impact on the whole chapter.

Despite all of the housing recent,
improvements, but the house still misses
the benefit of a functioning kitchen.
Active members currently are forced to
purchase university meal plans for food,
while all other chapters at MSU have
hired cooks which prepare meals for
them. One of our major goals is to have
the kitchen functioning by this time next
year.
Our members are very proud of the
current state of our house’s condition, but
it is obvious that there is room for
improvement. We encourage all parents
and alumni to visit the chapter house as
often as they can – at any tailgate, the
alumni banquet, or when ever business or
leisure bring you to the East Lansing area
– in order to view our progress.

Do you have a PIKE experience you would like to share with current members of the chapter? Come in and tell us about them an informal chapter meeting. We would appreciate for a couple volunteers to talk about their time at the Iota Iota chapter. Whether if you want to discuss what the house was like when you were at Michigan State, or how Pike shaped you into the man you are today; we would love for you to share your words and time with us. Email Mike Barber for more information.
Athletes Before taking the reins as our President, Stefan Figurski walked on to the MSU Varsity Football Team as a safety. Below is brother Matt Heneveld who walked on to the Varsity Basketball Team this fall. We congratulate him on this great accomplishment and season.
The rest of Pike athletics have been making their name well known on the athletic fields. We are the runner-‐up in IM Football, while defending both the IM Basketball and Softball Championships.
Above, Pike A swept the competition, taking home the 1st place softball trophy for the second consecutive season by mercy in the first inning of the championship game.

The Annual PIKE Golf Outing and Alumni Banquet will be held on April 9th at Timber Ridge Golf Club in
Lansing, and will begin promptly at 8:30 AM and will be followed by a banquet to honor our alumni. The
banquet will be followed by a celebration at Harper’s on Albert Rd. in downtown East Lansing.
The golf outing is one of our
chapter’s largest alumni events. The banquet consists of an award ceremony (including various golf
contests), a silent auction, a live auction, as well as a raffle. Auction items include, but are not limited to:
tickets to athletic events, autographed memorabilia, and a timeshare, so you will not want to
miss out!
If you are interested in attending, please feel free to sign up by going to wwww.msupikes.org and clicking
on the “Golf Outing” tab. We ask that you give us your RSVP to the
event by April 1st.

Hole sponsorships are also available to those who are interested. Contact Mike Barber for more information.
Donations are greatly appreciated. If
you have an auction item you feel you can donate for use in one of our auctions, contact Mike Barber at
your earliest convenience.
If you have any questions or comments, please send them to Mike Barber at (248) 930 – 1237.
Interesting in Staying Involved? There are many ways to show your support and give back to the Iota Iota chapter. Right now, we are looking for volunteers interested in helping us form an Alumni Advisory Board. You would be working with our Executive Board to help implement and maintain long-‐term goals that will aid our Chapter in efforts to continue our progress. Meetings will be held on a monthly or bi-‐semesterly basis. If you are interested, please contact Stefan Figurski at (248) 767-‐1720 or Mike Barber at (248) 930-‐1237. This would be a great opportunity to meet the chapter’s current leadership and active members, as well as allow our current actives to get an even greater appreciation for our alumni brothers and put the lifelong fraternal experience of Pi Kappa Alpha on display to the rest of the East Lansing community.
Gentlemen We have been extremely successful in filling the house with active members that can contribute and take our chapter to the next level. Last fall, 21 members were initiated and this Spring we have taken 16 pledges to round out the year. There are currently 96 active members in the Iota Iota Chapter.
