PARTS OF THE STORY
Character:
Mr. Mayor : Mr. Mayor is the overall ruler of Ormoc. He oversees all the activities going on in the city and is constant
communication with the national government. He serves his people well and is ready to do anything to improve the welfare of its
constituents.
Mr. Juan & Mrs. Dos: They are the most active resident of Ormoc who are also good friends of the Mr. Mayor. They cooperate
with the local government in its activities and are active members of their community. When a problem is at hand, they do everything
they can to help and find a solution for it.
The Book of Answers: The book that enlightened the people of Ormoc and gave solutions to its problems. It is very wise and
knowledgeable and is eager to extend help to those who are in need.
Setting: Ormoc, Leyte (by the coast and Mr. Mayor’s office)
Plot
In a port area near Ormoc, a cargo vessel carrying radioactive waste from a nuclear power plant sank due to strong winds and
heavy rains. This cargo vessels reportedly carried barrels of waste which were released into the ocean, thus making the water
radioactive. Almost all living creature in the ocean died. Soon thereafter, changes in the city’s environment and surroundings were noticed and felt by the people, particularly, Mr. Juan and Mrs. Dos. Worried about what the unknown waste was going to bring to
them, they ran to Mr. Mayor to talk about it with him. They shared to him what they saw and felt. Upon hearing this, Mr. Mayor
called the proper authorities to take action and while waiting for them, he gathered all its constituents to the town hall and asked them
to pray that a solution will come.
The following day, while Mr. Juan and Mrs. Dos were observing the surroundings, another strange occurrence happened; they
saw a book falling from the sky. It was “The Book of Answers.” Picking it up, they hurriedly brought it to Mr. Mayor. As they
opened the book, they all got confused as there was nothing written on it except for the last page. From the last page, they figured out
that every time you write a question, the book will reply with an answer. Thus, they used this book to find out what is happening in
their surroundings and discovered the best possible way to approach this.

ANSWERS TO GUIDE QUESTIONS
PREQUEL QUESTIONS ANSWERS
1. What caused the formation of foul odor in the port? The foul odor is caused by the dead fishes and decay of the
sea creatures in the ocean. The living things found in the
sea have began to rot and decompose, hence the stinky
smell.
2. How is food poisoning different from radiation poisoning? Which
causes which?
Food poisoning is a sickness caused by contaminated food
and drinks that a person ingests. These spoiled foods often
have bacteria, virus, parasites and even chemical toxins
which triggers the poisoning.
Radiation poisoning is caused by excessive exposure to
ionizing rays. It is caused by a big amount of radiation and
radioactive elements that the body was exposed to. So, the
larger amount of radiation that your body experiences, the
higher the chances that a person will be more sickly.
3. How should nuclear and toxic chemical wastes be safely handled?
Why is this so?
They should be handled and disposed of with care.
Radioactive wastes may be transmitted by air, water or land
but it is should be placed in a strong, well-sealed and well-
inspected containers that can withstand various situations
that it could come across during its transport such as heat
and cold. Thick lead canisters are one of the best materials
as storage for nuclear waste because it does not permit
leakage to flow through it. Also, radioactive waste should
be transmitted into a lesser radioactive material.
Handling it safely is important since radioactive wastes are
hazardous and can contaminate the things around it which
will make its surroundings inhabitable.

4. How should nuclear and toxic chemical wastes be disposed? Why
is this so?
Nuclear and toxic chemical wastes should be disposed of
properly in an area out of sight and far away from
civilization where no one lives. These wastes should be
placed in a secluded area and remote from human
environment. In addition, toxic wastes should be placed in
carefully inspected containers that would be buried deep
underground to put it out of harm’s way. Disposal sites should be suitable and appropriate to ensure the health,
safety and well-being of the people since radioactive
elements can contaminate the surroundings.
IDENTIFIED PROBLEM SOLUTION PROPOSAL
1. There are containers of nuclear waste and radioactive barrels that
sunk deep into the ocean which made the water radioactive, thus
killing fishes and other sea creatures.
To stop this, we must properly collect and dispose of these
radioactive wastes by transferring it to a different area
isolated from humans. They must call the government or
those who are in charge of that containment ship to
properly remove and dispose the wastes from the sea.
2. There is a foul odor that is generated from the sinking of the ship.
Due to the radiation, fish death toll has been increasing
rapidly. As fishes die, they float. When they float to the
surface, the microorganisms start to rot. This decaying
smells bad. Hence, this should be cleaned and properly
collected as soon as possible to mitigate the odor.
3. Fishes and other sea creatures are rapidly dying due to the radiation
brought about the sinking of the ship that carries nuclear wastes.
So, people have nothing to eat and lose their livelihood as well.
Fish and other sea creatures that died and carries radiation
should not be eaten since you may become a victim of
radiation and food poisoning. In the same manner, they
lose their livelihood as they cannot catch and sell fish that
are contaminated and are already dead.
4. There is the possibility that this accident will happen again in the
future. What do we do now?
To prevent this from happening any further, the person in
authority must make sure that the transportation and
containment of radioactive material should be properly
secured, well-maintained and checked yearly for any
possible leaks or damages. Also, it should be dumped in
faraway places void of human communities. If these

conditions are not met for its safe transport and disposal,
the result would be catastrophic.
5. What should happen in the end? If the waste will not be completely removed, they have to
leave the village. Lessening the exposure of people by
getting away and increasing their distance from the source
of radiation will be better for them as the longer and nearer
a person is exposed to the infected zone, the more
hazardous and risky it becomes. EVACUATION IS THE
ONLY KEY FOR THEIR SURVIVAL. The village will be inhabited again once all of the nuclear
waste has been properly eradicated but this will take
thousands of years if they are highly radioactive so the best
way is to make that place a dumpsite for radioactive wastes
instead.
SCIENTIFIC CONCEPT ANALOGY AND BRIEF EXPLANATION
(see comic book for full)
1. Nuclear fission Monggo plant
Seed = uranium atom
Water drop = neutron
Actual grown monggo plant = heat, energy,
radiation released during nuclear fission
2. Radiation Monggo plant
Weeds around plant = radiation
3. Electromagnetic force Motor of the cargo vessel
4. Strong force Art Glue
5. Gravity Book of Answers falling from the sky
6. Gamma rays Streak of light
**Note: Monggo plant also somewhat explains EM force and Strong force.
