ประเพณนสบทอดกนมานานนบรอยๆ ปแลว เรมปฏบตเปนครงแรกทหมบานกะท จ. ภเกต โดยชาวจน ซงเชอกนวาเทพเจาจะชวยเหลอคมครองปกปกรกษาใหอยเยนเปนสข ถามนษยถอศลและกนผก

In actual fact, this tradition has been practiced for over ahundred years. It all started in Kathu Village by Chinese immigrants who believed that the Gods would protect them from harm if they stopped eating meat and practiced sanctity.

But did you know that there is a group of travelers who come to Phuket every year during the first to ninth night of September to join the Phuket Vegetarian Festival? This event is getting bigger and bigger in scale and gaining more and more attention with every passing year.

Today, this faith and belief is the core of happiness which can be felt by Phuketians and those who have come to participate.

In the morning, witness the ‘Giew Eng’ street procession which passes through the major areas of Phuket to scare off evil and bring good luck to the people; thus, the locals would set up tables filled with offerings in front of their houses. Fire crackers would be lit up wherever the procession passed as a symbol of welcome to the Gods.

As night falls, witness the Fire-Walking Ritual which spectators find very thrilling and absolutely fascinating. The ‘Mediums’ would walk bare-feet over burning coals and come out without a scratch or blister on them.

Afterwards, it’s time for ‘Sadoh Kroh’ or the ‘Ceremonial Bridge-Crossing Ceremony (Koi Harn) to chase away bad omen. Those who wish to join must bring a piece of paper cut in a figure to resemble themselves, a ‘Salung’ coin (.25 Baht) and one Chinese chive plant to the shrine so that the medium can perform the ceremony and stamp a sign onto the back of their shirt.

The incredible nine-day-and-night festival is considered to be a magnificent event of Phuket. Everyone willingly joins together in harmony as they adorn white clothing, take up a vow of sanctity and refrain from eating meat for the entire period. Every shrine would be filled with true believers and the sounds of their prayers.

The Stone Bridge, on this night, would be flushed with bright lights and thunderous sounds of fire crackers which would go on until almost midnight. This also signifies the closing ceremony and the official end to the Phuket Vegetarian Festival, a tradition which has been passed on from generation to generation for more than one hundred years.

We thoroughly enjoyed the 500-meter nature trail where, along the way, is a running stream with water so clear we could see the Mahsia Barb fish swimming around. Without doubt, we made occasional stops to take pictures along the way.

Finally, the 60-meter high waterfall was right in front of us. The thunderous sound of splashing water literally filled the forest. And like seeing a sign of invitation, we all jumped right into the clear, cool water together.

Feel like going to the island? There is one particular island surrounded by clear water and powder-white beach located not too far from Phuket. You can get there in 45 minutes by speed boat; and the nice thing about it is that it is open year round.

My friends and I came here to see what the rave is about and also to enjoy a relaxing time. We spent most of the time swimming in the sea and rested on sun loungers beneath huge umbrellas. Those who wanted more serenity headed out to the west of the island where the atmosphere is more peaceful and the water is even clearer.

We saw a number of overseas tourists who were enjoying sun-bathing. Some were out canoeing while others were screaming away with joy on the banana boat. But whatever each person was doing, the thing that everyone had in common was fun.

Our destination for this trip takes us a little further away to Pattalung. The province is 400 kms. from Phuket and takes about 5-6 hours to reach by car, so we decided to stay overnight. It is here that we came to search for red lotuses blossoming all over the lake.

The crisp, clean air and clear sky made the long drive very pleasant. By the time we reached Sai Kling Bridge located between Pattalung and Songkhla, it was already sunset. In the twilight, we could still see the huge 281,250-rai fresh water lake which was officially declared the first “Ramsar Site” in Thailand.

From the bridge, the vastness of the ‘Thale Noi’ (Little Sea) spread out as far as the eyes can see. We saw some villag-ers tending to their chores and buffalos grazing on the green field, and flocks of seagulls flew by overhead. It was a way of life that was simple, yet so peaceful and beautiful.

Yesterday, we were deeply impressed with the sunset; so today we decided to get up early to see the sunrise at Pak Prah Gan Canal. As expected, it was absolutely breath-taking. Added to the whole pleasurable experience was sitting back to observe people going about their days beside the lake.

We noticed a forest of Indian Mulberry trees that looked extra beautiful when hit by the first rays of light. What an incredible sight it was! And even though the rising sun was partially hidden be-hind clouds, we could still see the beauty of Pattalung that spread ahead.

Next on our schedule was taking a boat ride to watch birds and the lotuses in Thale Noi. As we glided slowly along the water, we found ourselves sur-rounded by gorgeous red lotuses while birds of different kinds flew by as if to welcome us into their home.

Some may wonder what sand crabs look like. Mr. Viroj, a local expert on the subject told us that they are a species that is crossed between the shrimp and crab. They look like crickets and are the same in size as a jewel beetle. Their legs and shell are like those of a shrimp; they live in the sea and are quite tasty to eat.

These creatures commonly bury themselves under fine sand around the beach and can be found in bunches. Catching them is easy; Mr. Viroj showed us a device he invented which looked like a regular fish net. He merely went in the water, swung the trap around a cou-ple of times and a whole bunch of sand crabs were caught inside his net.

Local Phuket pineapples are sweet and have a crunchy texture. After removing the thick outer layer, you also need to carve out the remaining rough bits thereby leaving a nice pattern. Normally, parents would let the children eat the core as this part is crunchier and less acidic. Pineapples taste best dipped in salt or shrimp dip, a secret recipe of Phuketians.

Apart from being enjoyed on its own as a fruit, ‘Yanads’ also make an excellent ingredient in cooking. It can be stir-fried with pig lungs or minced pork, or added to sour soup with morning glory vegetables, banana shoot and galangal to make pineapple curry with pork. This dish is simple and loved by everyone.

In a heated pan, stir coconut milk into chili paste and shrimp paste until everything is nicely blended. Add pork to the mixture and stir until cooked. It is fine to add some more runny coconut milk if the curry becomes too thick. Next, add pineapple and creamy coconut milk then flavor the dish to your liking.

Every year, on the ninth month of the Chinese calendar, the locals of Phuket would take up a vow of sanctity and refrain from eating meat as they believe that this is not just a way of making merit, but it also cleanses the body and mind of impurities accumulated over the year.Throughout the nine day period, those who believe would join in on the prayers, take up a vow of sanctity, eat only vegetarian food and participate in all kinds of activities in shrines across the island.During this time, people would wear all white clothes and they would go to the shrines to make merit.
