A typical day on Surin Beach can be both romantic and fun. We had been busy with various activities since the morning, so an afternoon snack of fried meatballs dipped in spicy sauce and chilled glass of fresh coconut juice suddenly seemed like a good idea. As I sat back to enjoy the food while watching friends chase each other around, I realized that it’s little things like this that make life worth living.

After a day of sight-seeing, we decided to settle down on Karon Beach for a glass of cold, blended fruit drink. The waitress brought us a long menu in English and we were not surprised as most of the clients are tourists from different countries.

Other than that, it’s a good spot for people of all ages to participate in light activities like swimming, sun-bathing or strolling along the beach. It’s not too quiet nor crowded, just right for a leisure family hang-out.

Visitors could catch a boat from Pang-Nga Bay or at one of Phuket’s several piers. For our team, we departed from Phuket as it was the

easiest for us.

On the way, we passed some tourists enjoying scenic kayaking tours around the caves so we greeted them with a friendly wave. We noticed that when people go on vacation, it doesn’t matter what nationality they are, words of greetings or ‘Sawadee’ exchanged between passers by always bring a smile upon everyone’s faces.

After an hour of pleasant boat ride, we reached Panyee Island’s Pier located in Pang-Nga Province. Most of the local villagers are Thai Muslims whose main occupations are fishery and selling local handicrafts to tourists.

We walked around leisurely, exploring the village surrounded by the sea and noticed that every house is built of wood in simple styles and placed high on stilts. This reflects the simple way of life which is so endearing to see. Everyone wears a smile on their faces and all the neighbors know one another like their own family members.

The Panyee villagers spend their days leisurely. They enjoy settling down on the porch just chit-chatting with other family members. Hours are spent at a slow pace, a world of difference than those of the big cities’.

As we gingerly walk along the path, we came upon the island’s only school. The children here greeted us with innocent smiles and laughter, occasionally chatting with visitors who stop by. Their genuine personalities left us and other visitors amused and contented, partly envious of how simple but happy their lives can be.

Our visit to Panyee Island made us realize some thing. For lunch, we had scrumptious seafood that was to die for. The slightly sweet taste of the fish, shrimp and squid meat was an indication that they must have come straight from the sea.

On this lazy day, we decided to hire an open-air bus from the city to Kathu and arrived at an impressive Sino-Portuguese building lovingly called ‘Angmoh Lao Nai Hua Muang’. It is a one and a half storey building with huge lawn in the middle for carrying out leisure activities. Inside the museum, visitors can learn about the history of tin-mining back in the old days and how the workers went about their days. There are also old pictures taken from the time which speak a thousand words of what went on.

We were quite fascinated with all the displays both inside and out. All the rooms were separated into different stages of mining, showing how they were retrieved, separated, their values, how they affected the lives of the locals, etc.

On this beautiful, clear day we’d like to take our readers to a stunning island called Ko Mai Pai. Not too many visitors have been here before which makes it even more exciting for us. Lets take a look around the island together.

Mai Pai or Pai Island is under the management of Nopparat Tara-Phi Phi Islands National Park Of-fice. It is a small island pretty much isolated from the others which is why few visitors have made it there. However, the advantage of being so far away is the unspoiled atmosphere of a virgin island that makes it great for over-night camping, admiring the stars under the night sky.

With every step, we could feel the caress of the fine sands that massaged every inch of our feet. The bright sunshine didn’t bother us at all as the fresh breeze kept us cool from our heads to our toes.

After several sessions of picture-taking and admiring views of the island, we decided to go for a swim among the fishes. Visitors who enjoy snorkeling will be particularly thrilled as shallow water coral reefs are present all around. At the eastern end of the island, several floats are positioned on the water to mark the swimming area and warn off boats.

Naiton Beach is idyllic if you’re looking for peace and serenity, plus the shallow water area is great for swimming. The beach has a slight curve lined with pineapple-like plants that is strangely pleasing to the eye. For all these reasons, some visitors have named it ‘The Forgotten Beauty’ of Phuket.

Driving from Thao Thep Kasatri- Thao Sri Soontorn Monument heading towards Ao Por Pier, we started to notice impressive yachts in the harbor as we slowly approached our destination. While I daydream about owning one someday, a friend interrupted my thoughts by pointing out that it was time for dinner. We looked around and spotted Chandara Resort and then remembered someone telling us that they serve great food there.

We enjoyed every dish but the one most loved by us all was Yum Nua (Spicy Beef Salad) that was really spicy and tender. Other items on the menu that caught our eyes were western food so we decided to order fish steak and beef steak to try. As expected, they were absolutely delicious.

As we arrive Soi Soon-Uthit, a street known for its abundance of delicious sweets and savories, an aroma of coconut milk fills the air. We dutifully follow the deli-cious smell and ended up at Ah Pong’s sweet shop, so we went inside without hesitation.

One of the cooks was pouring flour mixture into a pan and skillfully tipping it in circular motion to spread the mix into a thin sheet. He then lifts the sheet with a spatula and rolls it quickly into a cigar shape. Ah Pong’s rolls go very well with a cup of coffee or tea, the way Phuket locals like them.

Ah Pong’s rolls are quite simple to make. You just have to mix flour, egg yolks, coconut milk, sugar and some yeast together and pour it into a pan. Then it’s just a matter of spreading, lifting and rolling to achieve a truly delicious roll.

Though the process sounds simple enough, we prefer to buy original ones from Ah Pong’s (Mae Sunee). Quality and taste is guaranteed and the price is so agreeable at only 20 baht for 7 pieces. Apart from coffee and tea, these rolls also go nicely with ice cream. Enjoy!!

I am a teacher from Indonesia who love travelling to the exotic places in South East Asia. I planned to visit Phuket and nearby cities since last year. Before coming here, I searched for some more information about Thailand and many tourist attraction places from Lonely Planet guide book and the websites concerned. Also received some suggestions from my Thai friends who have been in Phuket for many years. I arrived Phuket about 10 days ago. This is my first time here. I would spend two weeks in the down town, beach and around. The days before, I went to Ban Khanaen, one of the cultural villages where is famous of “Nora” Dance Training. It’s a small village in Thalang district where is not far from Phuket down town. I stayed over there for 3 days and 2 nights at the Head Villager’s home. The living style of the local people was very interesting and attractive. The people there were very helpful and nice. They asked me to try some kinds of local food that’s quite hot and spicy. However, I liked the fish dishes that were very delicious because of the fresh ingredients. Whilst being there, I had a chance to practice the “Nora” Dance with some children and I felt very happy of doing that with all of them.I think Phuket is a perfect place to visit. I enjoyed the sun bathing, swimming, sight-seeing and eating throughout last week.
