FILM STUDIES 31-32

This winter period promises great ski conditions in many parts of Europe, which may please those audience members who enjoy a downhill thrill. But why spend an arm and a leg to break an arm and a leg when the Phoenix offers more affordable thrills and spills onscreen and you remain warm and cosy!

Start with the re-release of Louis Malle’s beautiful Au Revoir Les Enfants, a semi-autobiographical tale of friendship between two 12 year old boys at a posh boarding school in Nazi-occupied France.

Birdman has the critics raving; from “a bold cinematic stretch” and “one of the best films of 2014” to “Black Swan directed by Mel Brooks”.

Bringing Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s 1965 civil rights campaign to the screen in Selma, director Ava DuVernay has created “stunning humanistic cinema” and “a rare example of craftsmanship working to produce a deeply moving piece.”

Love is Strange is an engaging multigenerational tapestry about the families we’re born with and the ones we create. Alfred Molina and John Lithgow as a long-term couple capture our hearts in this true gem. The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel – Yes, they’re back! Everyone’s favourite ex-pat senior residents ( Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Bill Nighy, Celia Imrie) light up the screen again, this time making room for new guest Richard Gere.

Set in 1940s France and based on the best-selling book, Suite Française follows the romance between Lucile, a French villager and Bruno, a German soldier.

In Still Alice, a professor and mother faces the shock of devastating decline. With grace and power, Julianne Moore’s Alice embraces “the art of losing.”

We’ve got riches galore this winter in SCREEN ARTS. From the Metropolitan Opera we offer Iolanta/ Bluebeard’s Castle and La Donna Del Lago. The RSC brings us Love’s Labour’s Lost, and you won’t want to miss David Hare’s Behind the Beautiful Forevers from the National Theatre.

See you at the movies!

FROM FRIDAY 30 JANUARY

Au Revoir Les Enfants 12A

1hr 45. France 1987. Directed by Louis Malle, With Gaspard Manesse, Raphael Fejtö, Francine Racette. In French with English subtitles.

Writer-director Louis Malle’s autobiographical coming of age drama is based on a tragic event that took place during January 1944, when the then 12-year-old Malle (Lift to the Scaffold) was attending a Catholic boarding school in Nazi-occupied France. At the end of the Christmas holidays, three new Jewish students are enrolled, disguised with new names and identities in an attempt by the schools director Père Jean (Philippe Morier-Genoud; Three Colours Blue), who provides the film’s compassion and moral compass, to hide them from the Gestapo. Centring on the authentic friendship of two 12-year-old boys, Julien Quentin (Gaspard Manesse) and Jean Bonnet (Raphael Fejto), the timeless rhythms and rituals of school life are beautifully evoked in this amazing Academy Award nominated story of friendship, betrayal and guilt.

Birdman 15

FROM FRIDAY 30 JANUARY

1hr 59. USA 2014. Directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu. With Michael Keaton, Emma Stone, Zach Galifianakis, Edward Norton, Naomi Watts.

Michael Keaton (Batman, Robocop) plays washed up actor Riggan Thomson, who made his name playing a superhero in an early ‘90’s franchise – the eponymous Birdman. Jobless and isolated from friends and family Thompson faces a full-blown mid-life crisis and turns to theatre in order to rebuild his reputation as a serious artist. But Riggan can’t seem to shake the voice in the back of his head telling him not to let Birdman die. Keaton gives a virtuoso performance as the conflicted superhero, with a nod, perhaps, to his own post-Batman career. Birdman has been nominated for six Golden Globe awards.

FROM FRIDAY 6 FEBRUARY

Selma 12A

2hr 05. USA 2014. Directed by Ava DuVernay. With David Oyelowo, Carmen Ejogo, Tom Wilkinson, Giovanni Ribisi, Tim Roth, Cuba Gooding Jr. Martin Sheen, Oprah Winfrey.

Selma chronicles the fascinating political history of the period in 1965 when Martin Luther King Jr. led a march through the Deep South from Selma to Montgomery to demand equal voting rights from the U.S. government. Despite violent oppression the march was an astounding success, resulting in significant legislative achievement for the civil rights movement. David Oyelowo gives an astonishing performance as Martin Luther King Jr., managing to embody both the energy and power of King as an orator and political leader, whilst acknowledging his human vulnerabilities. Director Ava DuVernay makes her breakout feature with Selma being nominated for a Best Picture Oscar.

FROM FRIDAY 13 FEBRUARY

Love is Strange 15

1hr 34. USA 2014. Directed by Ira Sachs. With John Lithgow, Alfred Molina, Marisa Tomei, John Cullum, Cheyenne Jackson.

Ira Sachs’ quietly observant Love Is Strange is an intimate, wonderfully grownup tale of modern marriage and the balance people make between community and family. After nearly four decades together, Ben (John Lithgow; The Homesman) and George (Alfred Molina; An Education, Chocolat) finally decide to take advantage of the changes to the law and tie the knot in an idyllic wedding ceremony in lower Manhattan. However marriage is not all a bed of roses as unemployment and unpredictable family dynamics cause our couple untold challenges to their normalcy. Lithgow and Molina’s chemistry is terrific, their charisma, understanding and wholehearted acceptance of one another’s individuality is a joy to behold in this unconventional and refreshingly warm-hearted story of older-age love.

FROM FRIDAY 20 FEBRUARY

Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter TBC

1hr 45. USA 2014. Directed by David Zellner. With Rinko Kikuchi, Nobuyuki Katsube, Shirley Venard.

Sibling cult filmmakers David and Nathan Zellner spin the tale of a Japanese woman intent on discovering the fictional buried treasure from the Coen Brothers 1996 comedy film, Fargo. Kumiko, played by Academy Award nominee Rinko Kikuchi (Babel, Pacific Rim) is a lost soul, friendless, hates her job and yet has one passionate hobby: hidden treasures, so a road trip ensues. Her encountering a variety of American eccentrics on her journey reminds us of Alexander Payne’s road movie, Nebraska, while of course this darkly comic odyssey owes much to the Coen Brothers’ absurd scenarios full of deadpan humour. The journey from the confines of her mundane life to the delightfully strange and beguiling adventure is a wonderfully original vision.

FROM THURSDAY 26 FEBRUARY

The Second Best Marigold Hotel PG

2hr 02. UK 2014. Directed by John Madden. With Bill Nighy, Maggie Smith, Celia Imrie, Dev Patel, David Strathairn, Penelope Wilton, Tina Desai, Tamsin Greig, Richard Gere.

2011’s all-star cast (Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Bill Nighy, and Celia Imrie) returns to our screen 4 years on to continue their ‘golden age’ journey of romance and self-discovery. The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel revolves around ambitious, always-positive hotelier Sonny (Dev Patel; Slumdog Millionaire) juggling plans to expand the Hotel at the same time as his impending marriage to the woman of his dreams, Sunaina (Tina Desai). Sonny’s trials provide the backdrop for the developing relationships of the Hotel’s many senior residents, as their placid lifestyle is thrown into chaos by the arrival of Guy (Richard Gere) and Lavinia (Tamsin Greig).

Still Alice 12A

1hr 41. USA 2014. Directed by Richard Glatzer and Wash Westmoreland. With Julianne Moore, Kate Bosworth, Alec Baldwin, Kristen Stewart.

Adapted from Lisa Genova’s 2007 novel, Still Alice is a rare film possessed with the same courage as Michael Haneke’s unflinching Amour, shining a light into poignant family issues. Julianne Moore (Far From Heaven) in an emotionally rewarding Golden Globe winning performance plays Alice Howland a 50-year-old successful linguistics professor happily married with three grown children, who struggles after being diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s. Daughters Kate Bosworth (Big Sur), Kristen Stewart (Twilight) and husband Alec Baldwin (To Rome With Love) maintain a strained and troubled yet tender existence with Alice, which co-directors Glatzer and Westmoreland perceptively focus on to provide a convincing and complex understanding of familial relationships without ever resorting to sentimentality.

1hr 47. UK 2014. Directed by Saul Dibb. With Margot Robbie, Ruth Wilson, Michelle Williams, Sam Riley, Kristen Scott Thomas, Eileen Atkins.

Set during the early years of German occupation of France, Lucile Angellier (Michelle Williams; My Week With Marilyn), a beautiful French villager lives with her controlling mother-in-law (Kristin Scott Thomas; The English Patient) as she awaits news of her husband: a prisoner of war. However as Parisian refugees and German soldiers arrive into the town Lucile falls for the handsome German officer Bruno von Falk (Matthias Schoenaerts; Rust and Bone) who resides with them. Brilliantly adapted from the international best-selling novel by Irène Némirovsky, director Saul Dibb (The Duchess) has created a fascinating film, which has strong similarities to Jean Pierre Melville’s debut film, Le silence de la mer (1949), a very personal story of hesitant love and raw allegiances with great emotion.
