    FILM STUDIES 35-36

The weathers not the only thing blazing in June and July. Heres a quick tour of the amazing feature films on offer:

Timbuktu (p.4) a lyrical indictment of the enemies of joy, beautifully told by Malian director Sissako. Second Coming (p.5) this simple but affecting story of a contemporary London family stars the magnetic Idris Elba. Queen and Country (p.6) is John Boormans hilariously warm and wise follow up to Hope and Glory. Mr. Holmes (p.8) presents Ian McKellen as the aged detective, searching for answers to the mysteries of love and life before its too late. Shooting For Socrates (p.10) - the transformative power of the beautiful game plays out beautifully in this lovely tale of the 1986 World Cup seen through the eyes of a young Belfast boy and his dad.

Music runs through our summer fare, so ears to you, dear reader. Danny Collins (p.3)- Al Pacino gives a sweet performance as an aging rocker on the road to redemption. Camdens own phenomenal pop star with soul is vividly portrayed in Amy (p.13) . Paul Dano and John Cusack each play the troubled but brilliant songwriting leader of the Beach Boys, Brian Wilson, in Love and Mercy (p.14). Phoenix favourite Dustin Hoffman embraces his 50th big screen role as a music master teaching a young boy to find his creative heart and soul in The Choir (p.15).

Well, well, Welles Orson that is. See him first in one of the most atmospheric cinema masterpieces ever made, The Third Man (p.9) , followed by Magician (p.12), documenting his life and work on the eve of his centenary.

Our Sunday Best series (p.28) offers a monthly one-time screening of a film we think you should see. Junes Girlhood is a raw exploration of an all girl gang in a gritty Paris suburb. In July see classic London gangster melodrama with 80s moxie, The Long Good Friday, starring Helen Mirren and Bob Hoskins.

Curiouser and curiouser! On Saturday 27 June we celebrate the 150th Anniversary of Lewis Carrolls Alices Adventures In Wonderland with a special Kids Club (p. 20) screening and arts activity.

Let our Caf tempt you with treats and cooling drinks enjoyed indoors or from our sunny balcony.

    See you at the movies!

  • FROM FRIDAY 29 MAY

Danny Collins 151hr 46 mins. USA 2015. Directed by Dan Fogelman. With Al Pacino, Annette Bening, Jennifer Garner, Christopher Plummer.

Loosely based on British folk singer Steve Tilson and a lost letter from John Lennon, this is a charming and heartfelt paean to music and family starring Al Pacino (Godfather, Heat). He plays Danny Collins, a jaded singer who released one incredible album in 1971, but now lives off the past. Pacino plays him with humour and pathos hes a rogue who has made many mistakes in his life and the emotions, simple and raw are served up with affability and humour, like all good films about redemption and self-awareness.

    Timbuktu 12A

    FROM FRIDAY 29 MAY

1hr 36. France/Mauritania 2015. Directed by Abderrahmane Sissako. With Ibrahim Ahmed, Abel Jafri, Toulou Kiki. In French/ Arabic/ Bambara/ Songhay with English subtitles.

Nominated for Best Foreign Language Film of the Year and the Palme dOr in Cannes writer/director Abderrahmane Sissako (Waiting For Happiness, Bamako) shows the peaceful lives of citizens of rural Mali whose routines are disrupted by Jihadists who declare new hard-hitting rules based on sharia law. Based on an actual event from 2012, the smaller story of a cattle herder and his family who reside in the dunes of Timbuktu and find their quiet lives disturbed is wonderfully constructed and observed. A strong and haunting film

  • FROM FRIDAY 5 JUNE

Second Coming 151hr 45. UK 2014 Directed by Debbie Tucker Green. With Idris Elba, Nadine Marshall, Kai Francis Lewis.

This feature debut of playwright Debbie Tucker Green is a scintillating psychological drama, exploring the effect of an unexpected and unannounced pregnancy on an Afro-Caribbean family in London. The photography is beautiful in searching out small stories and perspectives, brilliantly capturing a sense of familiarity and proximity. Nadine Marshall (Random) and Idris Elba (Prometheus, Luther) provide excellent performances in this lovely mixture of realism and poetic cinema full of visions and grace.

    FROM FRIDAY 12 JUNE

Queen and Country tbc1hr 55. UK/ Ireland 2015. Directed by John Boorman. With Callum Turner, Caleb Landry Jones, Pat Shortt, David Thewlis, Richard E Grant.

Director John Boorman (Point Blank, Deliverance) has made a lovingly told sequel to the Academy Award-nominated Hope and Glory (1987), which fictionalised Boormans own childhood growing up in WWII London. This updated autobiographical tale of his two-year conscription into the army in the early Fifties sees the now grown up Bill Rohan (Boormans alter ego) drafted into the army where he and his best friend attempt to run amok as they try to find love in the midst of military training. A very sweet and charming snapshot of post-war Britain.

  • FROM FRIDAY 12 JUNE

London Road 151hr 31 mins. UK 2015. Directed by Rufus Norris. With Olivia Colman, Tom Hardy, Kate Fleetwood.

Musical thriller London Road reveals the events of 2006, when the quiet rural town of Ipswich was shattered by the discovery of the bodies of five women. The film is helmed by theatre director Rufus Norris, written by Alecky Blythe and based on her National Theatre musical of the same title, which in turn is based on the interviews about the Steve Wright killings. Starring Tom Hardy (Locke, Bronson) and Olivia Colman ( Broadchurch, Rev) this powerful film documents a community grappling with what it means to be at the epicentre of a tragedy.

    FROM FRIDAY 19 JUNE

Mr Holmes PG1hr 43. UK/USA 2015. Directed by Bill Condon. With Ian McKellen, Laura Linney, Hiroyuki Sanada, Roger Allam, Colin Starkey.

Based on Arthur Conan Doyles creation (made famous for television by Phoenix patron Benedict Cumberbatch) and taken from the novel A Slight Trick of the Mind by Mitch Cullin, director Bill Condon reunites with Ian McKellen after Gods and Monsters (1998). Delightfully charting the detectives twilight years, we find Holmes retired to a chocolate-box Sussex cottage to keep bees, long past sleuthing. A gentle drama, this distinguished and affectionate film humanises a much-loved mythical figure.

1hr 40. UK/USA 1949. Directed by Carol Reed. With Orson Welles, Joseph Cotton, Trevor Howard.

A film with great credentials: based on the classic Graham Greene novel, directed by Academy Award nominated British director Carol Reed, with Anton Zaras zither score and Academy award-winning black and white cinematography (all oblique angles and distorted locations) by Robert Krasker. Pulp novelist Holly Martins (Joseph Cotten, Citizen Kane) travels to shadowy, post-war Vienna to investigate the mysterious disappearance of an old friend, black-market opportunist Harry Lime (Orson Welles, Citizen Kane). Welles surely has most famous entrance in the history of the movies he defines the films character and impact in what is perhaps the quintessential Film Noir spy thriller.

Shooting for Socrates PG1hr 31. UK 2014. Directed by James Erskine. With Richard Dormer, Conleth Hill, John Hannah, Art Parkinson.

Set in Northern Ireland, leading up to and during the 1986 Mexico World Cup. Set against the backdrop of violence in Belfast, ten year old football loving Tommy (Art Parkinson) tries to make sense of the tumultuous events surrounding him through football, as Northern Ireland prepare for their David v Goliath match against Brazil and their most famous player, Socrates de Souza. The dialogue is witty and clever and the performances natural. A truly charming and endearing film, interspersed with news and sporting footage that proves that the beautiful game can be a unifying force for good for any community.

  • FROM FRIDAY 26 JUNE FROM FRIDAY 3 JULY

The Look of Silence 151hr 43. Denmark/Finland/Indonesia 2014. Directed by Joshua Oppenheimer.

The Look of Silence is Joshua Oppenheimers powerful companion piece to the Oscar-nominated The Act Of Killing. Through Oppenheimers footage of perpetrators of the 1965 Indonesian genocide, a family of survivors discovers how their son was murdered, as well as the identities of the killers. The documentary focuses on the youngest son, an optometrist named Adi, who decides to break the suffocating spell of submission and terror by doing something unimaginable in a society where the murderers remain in power: he confronts the men who killed his brother and, while testing their eyesight, asks them to accept responsibility for their actions. This unprecedented film initiates and bears witness to the collapse of fifty years of silence.

Magician: The Astonishing Life and Work of Orson Welles tbc1hr 34. USA 2014. Directed by Chuck Workman. With Orson Welles, Peter Bogdanovich.

This documentary on the great filmmaker, Orson Welles, timed to commemorate the 100th anniversary of his birth, tells of his remarkable genius both in theatre and film. Director Chuck Workman has previously edited the Academy Awards and directed many films on famous artists and politicians (Andy Warhol, Jonas Mekas, Jack Kerouac, Martin Luther King, John F Kennedy). Here he skilfully works in the great auteur Welles greatest moments from the Mercury Theater, the controversial radio production of War of the Worlds, the short-lived golden-boy status at RKO and of course Citizen Kane.

    11 12

  • FROM FRIDAY 3 JULY FROM FRIDAY 10 JULY

Love and Mercy PG2hrs. USA 2014. Directed by Bill Pohlad. With Paul Dano, John Cusack, Paul Giamatti, Elizabeth Banks.

Director Pohlad (producer, Brokeback Mountain, 12 Years a Slave) has made a fascinating biopic about Beach Boys leader Brian Wilson who struggled with psychosis while crafting his avant-garde pop masterpiece Pet Sounds (1966). Paul Giamatti (Sideways) plays the exploitative Dr Eugene Landy who had Wilson under his care. Fascinating casting has Paul Dano (Little Miss Sunshine, There Will Be Blood) as the young and prolific Wilson, and John Cusack (High Fidelity, The Grifters) as the older genius, making this a gloriously evocative watch.

Amy tbc1hr 30. UK 2015. Directed by Asif Kapadia. With Amy Winehouse.

Director Asif Kapadia (Senna) returns to the documentary genre with this film about the late singer/songwriter Amy Winehouse. The Camden Town resident won six Grammy awards and was for a time the main focus of the press due to her off stage drug fuelled lifestyle and extraordinary natural talent. Kapadia tells the performers story in her own words. It is as much a portrait of a troubled artist, who was something of a one in a generation style entertainer, as it is about our media-obsessed culture.

  • FROM FRIDAY 17 JULY

13 Minutes 151hr 50. Germany 2015. Directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel. With Christian Friedel, Katharina Schttler, Burghart Klauner. In German with English subtitles.

Director Oliver Hirschbiegel (Das Experiment, Downfall) returns to the theme of Hitler and WWII for this breath-taking story of resistance fighter Georg Elser who could so very nearly have changed the world. This exciting thriller is based on the true story of a man who designed a bomb and attempted to kill Hitler in 1939, but was unsuccessful by only 13 minutes. Similar in theme to The Imitation Game, the film highlights an individual who tried to impact WWII for the better and wasnt recognized by his country for many years.

    FROM FRIDAY 17 JULY

The Choir PG1hr 43. USA 2014. Directed by Francoise Girard. With Dustin Hoffman, Kathy Bates, Josh Lucas.

Director Francoise Girard (The Red Violin) has created a warm-hearted feel-good movie about music, belonging and nurturing the gifts you are given. An 11 year-old boy from a rough neighbourhood, orphaned after the death of his mother, finds himself at an elite music academy and in a rebellious battle of wits with a demanding choirmaster (Dustin Hoffman, The Graduate). Girard cleverly weaves a story in which the troubled protagonist finds his path through music via relationships between father and son, teacher and pupil and rival choir members.

1hr 53. France 2014. Directed by Celine Sciamma. With Karidja Tour, Assa Sylla, Lindsay Karamoh. In French with English Subtitles.

Writer/director Celine Sciamma (Tomboy) has created an intimate and tender portrait of a young black girl growing up in a deprived Paris suburb, who joins a gang and in doing so reinvents herself in the process. Its a socially aware piece of filmmaking and an invigorating and perspicacious exploration of adolescence in the raw. By exploring the various intersections between forms of oppression and discrimination, Girlhoods non-patronising and credible representation of class, race and gender is a rare and perceptive illustration of the intricacies of social inequality.

This unmissable premiere event will feature an exclusive Q&A following the screening with the key cast and crew, broadcast live from London.Tue 9 June 6.45pm (Live)

RSC Live: The Merchant of Venice 12A4hrs. Polly Findlay (Arden of Faversham 2014) directs Shakespeares uncompromising tragedy. In the melting pot of Venice, trade is God. With its ships plying the globe, the city opens its arms to all, as long as they come prepared to do business and there is profit to be made. With the gold flowing all is well, but when a contract between Bassanio and Shylock is broken, simmering racial tensions boil over. A wronged father, and despised outsider, Shylock looks to exact the ultimate price for a deal sealed in blood. Broadcast Live from Stratford-Upon-Avon.Wed 22 July 7pm (Live)

A Midsummer Nights Dream tbc1hr 45. A Midsummer Nights Dream is the most phantasmagorical of all Shakespeares plays - fairies, spells, and hallucinatory lovers abound. These flights of fancy are well matched to the the talents of Julie Taymor (The Lion King), who turns out a production thats visually breathtaking, funny, sexy, and darkly poetic. With cinematography by Rodrigo Prieto (Argo, Frida) and music by Oscar-winning composer Elliot Goldenthal, this immersive experience was filmed during Taymors inaugural stage production at the New Polonsky Center in Brooklyn, NY last Autumn. This is your chance to explore behind the scenes of this historic building and find out all about its fascinating past. The tours last for approximately 45 minutes and include a visit to the projection room.

    Sun 31 May at 12.15pm, 1pmSun 5 July at 12pm, 1pm

Tickets for the tour 2 (or free with a ticket for one of the illustrated film talks, see p.29)
