    •Think about your daily conversations• how often do they fall into the category of

    trying to convince someone to do something,go somewhere, change their mind?

    statistics, manipulate quotations, or pass off opinion as fact toensure a successful speech? (hint: the answer should be NO)

    ▪ Maintaining the bond of trust with listeners is vital to aspeaker’s credibility

    ▪ You SHOULD learn about all sides of an issue, seek out

    competing viewpoints, and ensure your facts are straight

    ▪ Persuasion is something a speakerdoes with the audience

    ▪ Listeners engage in a mental give-and-take with the speaker

    ▪ They assess the speaker’scredibility, delivery, supporting

    materials, language, reasoning,and emotional appeals.

    ▪ They engage in a mental dialogue

    ▪ Your job is to target a portion ofyour audience to persuade

    Types of Persuasive Speeche

    ▪ Question of Fact– Disputed facts

    ▪ What is or is not the case

    ▪ Question of beliefs, values, attitudes

    – What is better, right, or moral?▪ Usually rely on emotional appeals

    ▪ Question of action or policy– What should or should not be done?

    ▪ Goal – to cause action in the audience

    Question of Fact

    Speeches that question facts are based on whether or not a particular topic i

    whether or not it is backed by concrete evidence.• When there is no concrete evidence, the topic becomes a disputed fact

    • Ex in Text, page 308: Space travel is a fact because it has been experobserved, and reported. It can not be disputed.

    • However, UFO’s are not backed up by concrete evidence becausbeen properly observed and reported.

    • This is now a disputed fact and lends itself to a “Question of fact

    speech.• It is up to the speaker to determine what their audience believes

    topic, write the speech, present their understanding of the factsopposing viewpoints, and persuade the audience to believe thei

    • Remember, if there is no point of contention – or disagreement – with tis no need to try to persuade.

    • If something can be determined to be true through a little research not a topic worth arguing.

    Speeches of beliefs, values, and attitudes are questioning what is better, what

    is moral.• When we hold something near and dear to our hearts and find great imp

    • These speeches do not necessarily ask audiences to take action, althoughimplied.

    • Think of controversial topics here – gun control, abortion, capital pun

    suicide, LBGT rights, etc…• These topics are directly touching on people’s beliefs and value sy

    • When considering a speech topic that questions beliefs, values, or attconsideration the requirements of the assignment.

    • Are you going to be able to actually persuade someone to changeseated belief in 6-8 minutes?

    • This is where you are going to need to complete an audience

    Question of action or polic

    Speeches that question actions or policy are designed to active response from the audience.

    •As a speaker, you are wanting them to do something of hearing your speech

    •For example:

    •Your position and desired action: “Marijuana should legalized – contact your representatives and voice yoopinions!!”

    •Your position and desired action: “There is a blood d

    shortage – go donate to the Red Cross!”

    Aristotle’s Persuasive Appeal

    You will have a successful speech if you utilize ArPersuasive Appeals in your speeches!

    ▪ Logos – an appeal to reason/logic– Statistics, Facts, Data

    ▪Pathos – an appeal to emotions/all the feels

    – Pictures/stories that invoke anger, sadness, fear, happiness, etc…

    ▪ Ethos – the persuasive appeal of the speaker’s ch– Establishing your credibility on topic. Being knowledgeable on top
