A few SPEcial Words from our President -
March 8th
TOPIC: Cavity Pressure Control Capabilities LOCATION: Tyco Electronics Global Automotive Division, 719 Pegg Road, Greensboro, NC
SPONSOR: RJG, Inc
BOD Meeting: 4:00 (room available at 3:30)
Tour and Shop floor demo at 5:00 pm

Please RSVP by Mar 4
The February meeting was held at Chef Paul’s restaurant in Sanford, NC. Attendees dined on herb chicken and baked pork chops. SPE members gathered to honor Education Night Scholarship/Award recipients. Educational Grants were made to North Carolina State University, Central Carolina Community College in Sanford, NC and the Polymer Center for Excellence in Charlotte, NC as well as ANTEC.
Dennis Hayford from the Polymer Center gave an excellent presentation on the history and development of the Polymer Center. The people at PCE provide an astounding number of services for the plastics industry from training, to testing, compounding, and mold design. More information can be found at their website www.polymers-center.org.
This month’s meeting will be held in Greensboro, NC at Tyco’s Pegg Road facility. It will be on the topic of Scientific Molding. Last year’s presentation was excellent. It included information on using sensors to monitor cavity pressure, temperature, plastic flow and other pertinent factors in production molding. This March will revisit the same topic.
Once again, it is time to nominate officers and board members for the 2011-2012 SPE year. If you are interested in being on the Board of Directors or in being an Officer, please contact myself, Glenn Shearin or your President-Elect Mike Ellison. We have several positions opening. This is a great opportunity to get more involved as well as network.
George Millington, our Membership Chairman, informs me that we currently have 185 members. Let me emphasize the importance of maintaining your membership with SPE. Our organization is only as strong as its membership. So please, if you know anyone who would like to join or who is just interested in what we do, let us know.

Treasurer’s Report: Steve Hamm had a last minute issue which prevented his attendance. Glenn Shearin will contact Steve about circulating the current treasurer’s report
Membership: George Millington was unable to attend due to illness, but emailed a current membership status. Currently the section has 185 members.
Nominating Committee: Glenn Shearin will send out an email soliciting members for the 2011/2012 nominating committee. Several members of the board indicated a willingness to serve only if an insufficient number of new members were found to form this year’s nominating committee. Glenn will also contact unsuccessful candidates in last year’s BOD elections to see if they are interested in running again in 2011.
Calendar: The board confirmed the following calendar items before our summer ‘break’:
1. The March meeting will feature a presentation on cavity pressure controls and a tour of Tyco’s Pegg Road facility.
2. The April meeting will be held at Whiteridge (cancelled in January due to inclement weather).
3. The May meeting will be the annual Golf Outing with the Carolinas Section
4. June will be our annual planning meeting.
The meeting was adjourned by the president, Glenn Shearin.

DME Introduces Low-Cost Mini-ShutTM Automatic Nozzle Tips
New DME Molding Supplies product prevents drooling at a fraction of the cost of competing products
Madison Heights, Mich. – DME Molding Supplies, the maintenance, repair and operations products division of DME Company, has expanded its already extensive line of MRO products to include new Mini-ShutTM Automatic Nozzle Tips. These low-cost tips shut off the flow of plastic into a mold to prevent drooling and stringing without requiring mold decompression.
There are several methods molders currently use to prevent drooling and stringing, but they’re often expensive, complicated and unreliable. The patented, simple design of the Mini-Shut enables molders to eliminate the variables and produce consistent shots without drooling, every time.
“The Mini-Shut fits a niche in the market as low-cost way of stabilizing the injection process and eliminating many surface imperfections on parts,” said Jim Hunt, manager of DME Molding Supplies. “Competitive products cost several thousand dollars. Mini-shut is only a fraction of that.”
Typically, when plastic is injected into a mold and the mold opens, plastic continues to drool out of the nozzle. This presents significant challenges to a molder as it can create imperfections in the next part.
A common method of counteracting drool is with mold decompression – retracting the screw to relieve pressure at the nozzle tip. However, this process drops the pressure in the barrel and creates the potential for short shot. When the molder tries to make the next part, there is often not enough plastic in the barrel to fill the mold completely.
When retracting the screw, the molder also has to control the melting process, a complicated endeavor.
“Control of the melting process depends on a number of factors, including the proper screw and NRV design, and setting variables such as back pressure, barrel temperature, screw speed and melt decompression,” said Hunt. “It often produces stringing, part imperfections created because of the varying temperatures.”
The Mini-Shut eliminates the need for mold decompression by the simplicity of its design. After a molder shoots the part, the nozzle itself doesn’t have enough pressure to continue drooling plastic. There is no need to retract the screw, but there is plastic waiting at the tip to shoot the next part.
Another method molders often use to eliminate drooling is with spring-loaded shut off nozzles. Typically costing between $1,000 and $2,000, these parts use an internal pin that wears over time and must be replaced. The Mini-Shut’s simple design with internal springs arranged in a certain pattern shuts off the flow of plastic to that tip. The Mini-Shut is a better alternative because it contains no moving parts, minimizing maintenance and downtime.
Mini-Shut is available in two different sizes, fitting 80 percent of systems. The small bore variety is 1.5” long, with radii ranging from 0.5-0.75” and orifices ranging from 0.125-0.375”. The large bore variety is 1.1735” long with radii ranging from 0.5-0.75” and orifices of 0.25”.
