From the Pastor, Fr. Anthony Mendoza “If I Can Test Drive a Car, Why Not Test a Potential Spouse?” Part 1

A young Catholic woman said: “I would never buy a car without first doing a test drive, so why can’t I live with my boyfriend before we decide if we want to get married?” Her meaning was clear. She would test a car by actually driving it, so she wanted to test a potential spouse by living as if they were married. How would you answer this question? Your first response might be to say, “ Our Catholic faith teaches that is a serious sin,” and that would be correct. But this young woman had already been through catechism classes and she knew the position of the Church. She was really asking why it was harmful for an unmarried couple to live as if they were married. Sometimes we might not have clear answers as to why certain sins are harmful, but when we can answer such questions it can help people to see that our faith is very reasonable. A short answer to her question would be: “Because your boyfriend is a person, not a car!” That would be a correct answer, but nowadays many people do not even understand what it means to be a person and how persons are fundamentally different from things and why they should be treated differently. Maybe the easiest way to understand the meaning of personhood is to compare our actions with those of non-domesticated animals. The behavior of animals in the wild is very predictable because animals follow the instincts proper to their species. Persons also have instincts, but we are free to choose to follow those instincts or not. That is why the behavior of persons is very unpredictable! Because persons have free will, we can choose to love others, even to love them with the highest form of love, to love them purely for their own sake (the Christ-like love which is called “agape”). This ability puts persons on a completely different (immeasurably higher) level than things. And that is a very good reason why we should not treat people the way that we treat things. There are currently different ideas about the meaning of marriage, but most everybody in our society agrees on two characteristics of marriage: 1) Marriage involves two persons making some kind of gift of themselves to each other to become united to each other. This means that the two persons are freely giving themselves to each other, as opposed to being forced or pressured to do so. 2) Marriage is meant to be a lifetime commitment. This is the intention at the time of marriage, even though many marriages do not last a lifetime. Nobody ever says, “Let’s get married for a few years!” or “Let’s stay married as long as you are healthy, have a good job and still look good!” Those getting married at least claim to have a lifetime commitment to each other, an unconditional commitment.

These characteristics of marriage indicate a great respect for persons. 1) It’s hard to even imagine a person freely making a gift of himself/herself to a favorite animal or plant! Only a person, somebody who can freely choose to love another for the sake of the beloved, can be worthy of the gift of self of another person. 2) The intention of lifelong marriage means that there is a great goodness in each spouse, a good that will endure in spite of changes in health, employment, good looks, etc. This intention of an unconditional marriage affirms the great dignity of each spouse as a person. But an unmarried couple who are living together as if they were married are not treating each other with the respect that they should

have for persons. They are having a physical intimacy which signifies the meaning of marriage: “I freely give myself to you, I accept you as a freely given gift to myself and I want to become one with you.” But since they are not married they are in fact lying to each other with their bodies. Since they are not married, they have not truly given themselves to each other or accepted the other’s gift of self and they have not truly become one. Besides that, their actions, testing the conditions of being married, are really a denial that marriage is an unconditional, lifelong commitment. This is a terrible way to prepare for marriage! It is little wonder that several studies have shown that couples who live together before getting married have a greater rate of divorce than couples who don’t live together before marriage! [To be continued.]

Del párroco, P. Anthony Mendoza

Santo Tomas More
