We are very happy to announce that we have now scheduled three Masses for Confirmation here at St. Patrick: Saturday, July 25 at 12:00 noon Friday July 31 at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, August 22 at 11:00 a.m. You will be sent a message by Flocknotes about which date you would prefer, although we may not be able to accommodate all requests. Those who have completed all their requirements and who respond to us first, will be given preference. Due to the COVID-19 restrictions, this year we will not require community service hours. We will schedule a one day retreat on Saturday, August 8, as a final opportunity for those students who have not yet fulfilled their retreat requirements. The absolute last date to turn in the Confirmation paperwork to the parish office will be Friday, July 31 by 5:00 p.m. Any student whose paperwork has not been completely finished and turned in by that time, will have to wait until next year for Confirmation. May God grant us blessed Confirmation Celebrations!

Saint Ignatius and the Jesuits As you have probably realized, I love to speak about the saints

and their many wonderful Christian examples they provide to us Christians. Today, we will be learning a little about Saint Ignatius of Loyola, whose feast day is celebrated on July 31st.

Like many saints, including many of us who hope to be saints, Ignatius underwent a conversion. While he was bedridden, trying to heal from a leg wound, Ignatius spent his “time reading the life of Christ and lives of the saints. His conscience was deeply touched, and a long, painful turning to Christ began” (Saint Ignatius of Loyola, Franciscan Media, https://www.franciscanmedia.org/saint-ignatius-of-loyola/). Ignatius eventually founded the religious order of the Society of Jesus, also known as the Jesuits. On the Jesuit’s website, https://jesuits.org/aboutus, we read “ [the] vision of our founder, we seek to ‘find God in all things.’ We dedicate ourselves to the ‘greater glory of God’ and the good of all humanity. And we do so gratefully in collaboration with others who share our values, including laypersons. They have become part of the ‘we,’ the extended Jesuit family” (1). During my time in the seminary I always had a Jesuit for spiritual direction. The Jesuits introduced us to their spirituality, including the Spiritual Exercises and Lectio Divina with Ignatian Contemplation.

The Spiritual Exercises are meant to draw the Christian closer to God and to discern God’s will in the Christian’s life. They can be done in “four weeks” or in four phases. In his article, “The Exercises: The Ignatian Adventure,” Kevin O’ Brien states “the purpose of the Exercises is very practical: to grow in union with God, who frees us to make good decisions about our lives and to ‘help souls’” (Kevin O’ Brien, Jesuit Post, https://thejesuitpost.org/2012/03/the-exercises-the-ignatian-adventure/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIsMvOs8XK6gIVjIbACh3XIw9CEAAYASAAEgJAWfD_BwE, 1).

The Jesuits recommend another spiritual practice called Lectio Divina, which consists of four steps: (1) Reading (Lectio): This step begins the conversation with God and is meant to be “slow,

meaningful, with ears open” (Lectio Divina and Ignatian Contemplation, https://www.saginaw.org/lectio-divina, 1). One can read the gospel of the day or read a simple segment of the scriptures or a simple verse or even a simple word a simple word.

(2) Meditation (Meditatio): One meditates in this exercise. Reread the segment or the verse or the word from the scriptures again and ponder what God is saying. Try to immerse yourself in the scriptures and think about who you are in the story.

(3) Prayer (Oratio): One takes the time to speak to God about the scripture one has already meditated on, but this practice is meant to be done in silence and communication solely with God.

(4) Contemplation (Contemplatio): This step is to listen totally to God. One might read the scripture verse or segment once more. Let God speak to you and listen to what commitment He is calling you.

The Jesuits have made a wonderful contribution to our Christian life and continue to do so. You might not know this, but our Holy Father, Pope Francis, is himself a Jesuit. Let us strive to learn more about our Christian life through Ignatian Spirituality and that might help us live their motto “ad maiorem Dei gloriam” (for the greater glory of God).

Saint Ignaitus of Loyola! Pray for us!

Father of goodness and love, hear our prayers for the sick members of

our community and for all who are in need. Amid mental and physical

suffering may they find consolation in your healing presence. Show your

mercy as you close wounds, cure illnesses, make broken bodies whole

and free downcast spirits. May these special people find lasting health

this through our Lord Jesus who healed those who believed. Amen!
