Confessions
Confessions will be in the main church Monday, Wednesday and
Friday at 7:30 pm, and Saturday at 2 pm. Confessions will be in the parish hall 30 minutes before each Sunday Mass. You must wear a facemask and stand in line with
social distancing while waiting for confession.
Sunday Bulletin Our weekly bulletins have articles and the latest announcements for our parishioners. They are available in our church and in a box in front of the parish office. You can also see our bulletins online at our website: stpatricklaredo.org
For all other questions, please call our office during the hours listed on the front page. Donations can be dropped off at the slot in the door of the parish office, or you can sign up for easy online giving at our website. If you need to visit our office for any reason, you must wear a facemask, and do NOT visit if you are sick! Remember the beautiful advice of St. Padre Pio, “Pray, hope and don’t worry!”

Saint Peter Claver
The Jesuits’ motto is “ad maiorem Dei gloraim”, which translates into English as “for the greater glory of God.” Many Jesuits have demonstrated to the world the greater glory of God through evangelization, through martyrdom, through self-giving, and so much more. Aside from this motto, there is another wonderful phrase from a Jesuit priest, Saint Peter Claver. He said “We must speak to them with our hands before we speak to them with our lips” (Society of Jesus, Chinese Province, Saint Peter Claver, Human Rights Pioneer, https://www.amdgchinese.org/en/2012/09/11/st-peter-claver-human-rights-pioneer/, 1). Saint Peter Claver lived up to both phrases.
Peter Claver was born in Spain. He joined the Jesuits in 1601 and “was encouraged by Alphonsus Rodriguez ... to go to the missions in America. Claver listened, and in 1610 he landed in Cartagena, Columbia. After completing his studies in Bogotá, Peter was ordained in Cartagena in 1616” (Society of Jesus, Chinese Province, 1). Aside from ministering to the natives of Colombia, Saint Peter evangelized to the enslaved Africans. He sought to alleviate their suffering as best he could. He worked daily to minister to the needs of the slaves which arrived each year. He brought them food, he
nursed the sick, he comforted them, and he catechized them. He even attempted to guide the plantation slave owners to treat the slaves humanely. Saint Peter chose to live up to his words, “We must speak to them with our hands before we speak to them with our lips,” by refusing the hospitality offered to him by the plantation owners. He chose to stay in the slave quarters, “The Editors of Encyclopedia Britannica, “Saint Peter Claver,” https://www.britannica.com/biography/Saint-Peter-Claver, 1). He also did not permit the opposition he faced to minimize his evangelization. Some of the Spaniards in Colombia refused to enter the same church or confessional because African slaves were in that Church or received Reconciliation in that church. Even with the opposition he faced, Saint Peter Claver was able to baptize around 300,000 enslaved individuals. He died on September 8, 1654. Saint Peter Claver was canonized in 1888. In 1896, Pope Leo XIII proclaimed Saint Peter Claver as the patron saint “of all Roman Catholic missions to African peoples. Peter is also the patron saint of those in slavery and the Republic of Colombia” (Britannica, 1). We celebrate the feast of St. Peter Claver on September 9th. Through his intercession, may we overcome racial divisions in our own time.

It’s Not about You… it’s About the Other By Most Rev. James A. Tamayo, Bishop of the Diocese of Laredo
For half a year now, we have all been forced to battle the Coronavirus pandemic. Life, as we knew it, has undoubtedly been turned upside down. We have all been negatively affected – some of us more than others. The death toll across our communities throughout the Diocese of Laredo remains high. In the midst of the turmoil, there are still some individuals who are taking the pandemic lightly and not abiding by the precautionary measures set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and city officials.
There are some people who say, “I am strong. I’m not going to get COVID.” Others think, “Even if I get COVID, I will recover.” If this is your way of thought, I invite you to take a step back and see – don’t just look at, but really see – the people with whom you come into contact. It’s not about you…it’s about the Other. Do you have family members who are older or friends with underlying health conditions? Your friends and coworkers may be young and healthy; but if you unknowingly infect them, do you know if their family members are just as “strong”? Choosing to wear a mask has nothing to do with how strong YOU are. It is about loving those around you enough to protect them – from your grandparents and older family members to your friends and coworkers. We are called to act out of love for others, and these times in which we are living is no different. God urges us “As I have loved you, so you also should love one another.” (John 13:34) We can show our love for others by acting with prudence and heeding the warnings provided by health and city officials. Over the past few months, we have become keenly aware of the realization that God created each of us to be a responsible member in society. If we want to return to a more “normal” social way of living in the near future, we must evaluate whether our present way of life is going to help us achieve that goal or not. Are your actions today helping or hurting those around you? Are you driven by love for others during this time of the pandemic? It’s not about you…it’s about the Other. Our doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals are working tirelessly to treat those who are sick. They are reportedly exhausted – not so much because of the little to no time off they have – but much more so because it is emotionally draining to lose patients to a disease that has no known cure. Many people have lost loved ones far too early and suddenly; and they are still in shock and disbelief that they didn’t even have a chance to say goodbye. Put all politics aside, and see the pain and the suffering that is plaguing our communities. Commit
today to take the right steps and make choices that will show others that you care about them and to
help stop the spread of this pandemic. “And whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the
name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” (Colossians 3:17) If you find
yourself struggling to change your actions from “business as usual” to practicing social distancing,
wearing a face mask and washing your hands frequently, offer up your discomfort for someone who is
sick or for the family who just lost a loved one to COVID-19.
Remember, it’s not about you…it’s about the Other.

No se trata de Ti, se trata de cuidar al Prójimo Por S. E. Mons. James A. Tamayo, Primer Obispo de la Diócesis de Laredo.
Por más de seis meses, hemos estado luchando contra la pandemia del Coronavirus. Nuestra vida se ha puesto patas arriba, y las consecuencias para algunos han sido tremendamente dañinas hasta el grado de ser mortíferas. La tasa de mortalidad en la Diócesis de Laredo sigue siendo alta. En medio de esta turbulenta situación ha habido quienes denieguen la gravedad de la situación y que no se acatan a las medidas impuestas por las autoridades nacionales y municipales. Entre nosotros, hay quienes dicen “soy fuerte, a mí no me va a pegar el COVID.” Otros
piensan, “aunque me enferme, me voy a reponer dentro de poco.” Si usted, así piensa, le sugiero que recapacite y reflexione seriamente sobre su postura. ¡Porque no se trata de TI! Se trata de cuidar al prójimo. ¿Tiene usted parientes mayores o amigos con serias condiciones que afectan su salud? Sus amigos y compañeros de trabajo a lo mejor son jóvenes y gozan de buena salud, pero si usted inconscientemente los contagia, ¿sabe usted si los que viven en la casa con ellos también son fuertes y saludables? Usar la mascarilla no tiene nada que ver con la inmunidad personal de uno. Es una manifestación de amor y consideración que demostramos hacia los demás porque los queremos cuidar. Todos los de nuestro entorno familiar, comenzando con nuestros abuelos e incluyendo nuestros amigos y compañeros de trabajo merecen semejante consideración. Nuestra conducta como cristianos debía de ser guida por el amor de Cristo Jesús, sobre todo en estos tiempos tan extraordinarios. El evangelista nos dice “Este mandamiento les doy: que se amen los unos a los otros.” (Juan 13:34) Nosotros podemos manifestar nuestro amor cristiano actuando con prudencia y acatándonos a las advertencias y disposiciones de las autoridades civiles y del departamento de sanidad. Durante los últimos meses, hemos tenido que enfrentarnos con la realidad de que Dios quiere que seamos miembros responsables de la sociedad. Si queremos volver a una vida más normal pronto, es imprescindible que evaluemos si nuestro modo de vivir nos va a ayudar a atajar los problemas que actualmente nos impiden llegar a esa meta. Para evaluar si su modo de actuar tiene merito o si es perjudicial, pregúntese si conducta está basada en el amor al prójimo. No se trata de TI, sino de cuidar al prójimo. Nuestros médicos, enfermero(a)s y otros que trabajan en el campo de la medicina están trabajando incansablemente para cuidar a los que están enfermos. Actualmente, están agotados – no tanto porque no disponen de tiempo libre – sino porque emocionalmente les cuesta tener que cuidar a diario a pacientes que ellos mismos saben, no tienen posibilidad de mejorarse. Muchos han sufrido la muerte de seres queridos súbitamente, y están traumados y sin poder resignarse al hecho de que no pudieron acompañarlos en su agonía ni darles el último adiós. Dejemos a un lado consideraciones políticas, y veamos el dolor y el sufrimiento que se han apoderado de nuestras comunidades. Comprométase a tomar las medidas necesarias y a actuar de una manera que da testimonio a los demás que usted se preocupa por el bienestar del prójimo y que usted va a ser todo lo posible para que esta pandemia se disminuya. “Y todo lo que hagan, de palabra o de obra, háganlo en el nombre del Señor Jesús, dando gracias a Dios el padre por medio de El.” (Col 3:17) Si usted encuentra que le incomoda tomar las medidas necesarias es decir practicar el distanciamiento social, usar cubrebocas, lavarse las manos con frecuencia, ofrézcale al Señor ese pequeño sacrificio por algún enfermo por alguien que acaba de perder a un ser querido a causa del Coronavirus. Recuerde: no se trata de TI, se trata de cuidar al prójimo.
We are excited about the coming year of Confirmation classes. ALL Classes for 2020-2021 will be held ONLINE Mondays from 6:55 PM to 8:15 PM. All students prepare through Confirmation Preparation classes and must go through 2 consecutive years of preparation before they are able to receive the Sacrament. Classes start on Monday, September 28.
Requirements are as follows:
• Families should be active parishioners (regularly turning in church envelopes).
• After three (3) absences the teen will be withdrawn from the program.
• All students must attend weekly Sunday Mass or watch Sunday Mass online at our website.
• This school year all students must complete 10 community service hours.
• All students must live one (1) retreat by the second year.
• Parent participation is required helping with church events & activities (5 community service hours).
• 1st year & 2nd year parents are required to attend 5 parents sessions each year, for a total of 10 sessions (offered in English & Spanish)
• 2nd year students, parents & Godparents are required to attend 1 Confirmation Mini-Retreat approximately 4 hours.
Online registration for 1st and 2nd year Confirmation Students opens Monday, August 17th. You can register your high school teenager (those who have completed their 14th birhday by September 1, 2020) for Confirmation Preparation Classes
by downloading the appropriate forms from the parish website, <www.stpatricklaredo.org>. Fill in ALL information required, scan and email back, INCLUDING BAPTISM and FIRST HOLY COMMUNION CERTIFCATESto: [email protected]. If the registration form does NOT include these necessary certificates/documents, your teen will NOT be registered. Once your son/daughter is approved, you will receive a link to pay online. Then, you will be added to our communication database for the coming year so that you can receive more information and reminders
in the upcoming months. When the risk of the COVID-19 pandemic has diminished, you will need to bring an original copy of the baptism certificate to the office. Registration ends on Wednesday, September 16 at noon time! A parent & student virtual meeting will take place on Monday, September 21 at 7 pm.
CONFIRMATION REGISTRATION 2020-2021
Online registration for 1st and 2nd First Holy Communion Classes opens Monday, August 17th on the parish website: <www.stpatricklaredo.org>. You can register your child (those who are in 1st grade by September 1, 2020) for First Holy Communion Preparation Classes by downloading the appropriate forms from the parish website, <www.stpatricklaredo.org>. Fill in ALL information required, scan and email back, INCLUDING BAPTISM Certificate to: [email protected]. If the registration form does NOT include these necessary certificates/documents, your child will NOT be registered. Once your child is approved, you will receive a link to pay online. Then, you will be added to our communication database for the coming year, so that you can receive more information and reminders in the upcoming months. When the risk of the COVID-19 pandemic has diminished, you will need to bring an original copy of the baptism certificate to the CCD office. We are excited about the coming year of Catechism Classes. ALL Classes for 2020-2021 will be held ONLINE on Saturdays. All 2nd Year Preparation Classes will be on Saturdays from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM, and all 1st Year Preparation classes will be from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM. Registration ends on Friday, September 11! All students planning to receive the Sacrament of Holy Communion must go through 2 consecutive years of preparation. Classes will start on September 26. Requirements are as follows:

El lema de los jesuitas es "ad maiorem Dei gloraim", que al traducirse al español significa "para la mayor gloria de Dios". Muchos jesuitas han demostrado al mundo la mayor gloria de Dios a través de la evangelización, el martirio, la entrega y mucho más. Aparte de este lema, hay otra frase maravillosa de un sacerdote jesuita, San Pedro Claver, que dijo: “Debemos hablarles con las manos antes de hablarles con los labios” (https://www.stfrancismil.org/teachings/black-catholic-history-month-st-peter-claver). San Pedro Claver estuvo a la altura de ambas frases. Peter Claver nació en España. Se unió a los jesuitas en 1601 y “fue alentado por Alfonso Rodríguez … a ir a las misiones en América. Trató de aliviar sus sufrimientos lo mejor que pudo. Trabajaba a diario para atender las necesidades de los esclavos que llegaban cada año. Les traía comida, cuidaba a los enfermos, los consolaba y los catequizaba. Incluso intentó guiar a los dueños de esclavos de las plantaciones para que los trataran humanamente. San Pedro eligió estar a la altura de sus palabras: “Debemos hablarles con las manos antes de hablarles con los labios”, rechazando la hospitalidad que le ofrecieron los propietarios de las
plantaciones. Eligió quedarse en los barrios de esclavos, “Mensaje de Juan Pablo II a Los Colombianos a Conclusión del año Claveriano” (http://www.vatican.va/content/john-paul-ii/es/speeches/1980/june/documents/hf_jp-ii_spe_19800626_pedro-claver.html). Tampoco permitió que la oposición que enfrentaba minimizara su evangelización. Algunos de los españoles en Colombia se negaban a entrar a la iglesia o al confesionario debido a que los esclavos africanos habían estado en la iglesia o habían recibido la Reconciliación en esa iglesia. A pesar de la oposición que enfrentó, San Pedro Claver pudo bautizar alrededor de 300,000 esclavos. San Pedro murió el 8 de septiembre de 1654. San Pedro Claver fue canonizado en 1888. En 1896, el Papa León XIII proclamó a San Pedro Claver como el santo patrón “de todas las misiones católicas romanas entre los africanos y de la República de Colombia” (https://www.vaticannews.va/es/santos/09/09/s--pedro-claver--sacerdote-jesuita--apostol-entre-los-negros-dep.html). Celebramos la fiesta de San Pedro Claver el 9 de septiembre y pidamos que, por su intercesión, superemos las divisiones raciales de nuestro tiempo.

suffering may they find consolation in your healing presence. Show your
mercy as you close wounds, cure illnesses, make broken bodies whole
and free downcast spirits. May these special people find lasting health
and deliverance, and so join us in thanking you for all your gifts. We ask
this through our Lord Jesus who healed those who believed. Amen!
