Diocese has received $47,000 toward our goal of $100,000.
315 families in our parish have now
given $61,801 to the Catholic Sharing Appeal, which funds many important
ministries in our Diocese of Laredo. We are over halfway to our parish goal! If every family made some contribution, we can
reach our goal. If you have not yet made your pledge, please do so today. Forms are
available in the church and in the parish office. Thank you!

FROM THE PASTOR, FR. ANTHONY MENDOZA
Prodigal Son: Only True Love Overcomes Sin
The Parable of the Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11-32) shows how sin pulls us away from our family, and how true love can bring us back. Sin: The younger son demanded his share of his inheritance while his father was still alive! That money should have been kept for the father to use in his old age. But instead, the son completely wasted half of his father’s retirement fund! The son hardened his heart to somebody he should have loved for his own sake. The same is true of all of our sins. We should love God and others for their own sake. But instead, sin puts our focus on ourselves at the expense of others. That is how sin hardens our hearts to God and to each other. Separation: The prodigal son, after he taken half of his father’s retirement money, went far away from his father. His physical distance from his family is a sign of how our sins separate us from the ones whom we should love. When we sin against
anybody, our love for that person grows colder and we have less desire to be with that person. In fact, every sin also makes our hearts grow colder to God and we have less desire to even think about him. That is how sin separates us from others, sin weakens or destroys our relationships to others, including our relationship to our Heavenly Father. Suffering: Every sin leads to suffering. Many times our sins lead to physical suffering, but our sins always lead to a more serious spiritual suffering. Besides his physical suffering, the prodigal son probably didn’t feel too good about himself, knowing what he had done to his father. He probably felt too ashamed of himself to go back to his father. So he hired himself out to do the worst job for a Jew – working with pigs. Our sins always make us into persons who are more selfish, more self-centered, less loving. Our sins may gain us some physical pleasures, but they will leave us spiritually empty, like we are missing something essential for our fulfillment. That is why sin always leads to suffering. Seeing Love: When the Prodigal Son was at his lowest point, he suddenly remembered, “My father is kind to his servants – they have more than enough to eat!” Why didn’t he see the goodness and love of his father before then? Maybe because he was so focused on himself that he was blind to the love of his father. Many times the same is true of us. We are often blind to the love of our family and friends, and we are especially blind to the love of God. But when we finally become aware of the great harm we caused by our sins, the love of others, especially God’s love, can become more visible to us. Sorrow for Sin: Finally realizing the goodness of his father, the prodigal son decided to go back home and say: “Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you.” And that is often how it is with us. When we finally realize the harm caused by our sins, and we come to know the goodness of others, especially the perfect goodness of God, this should melt our hearts and make us sorry for our sins. Sacrifice of Forgiveness: All forgiveness requires a sacrifice. When the prodigal son apologized to his father, the father could have said: “Now you will work hard in my fields every day until you pay me back every cent of my money that you squandered!” But instead the father made a complete sacrifice of forgiveness, sacrificing ever getting back the money his son had taken from him. Because of our sins against God, we owed Him a debt that we could never re-pay. So what sacrifice did our Heavenly
Father make in order to forgive our infinite debt? He asked His dearly beloved Son, God-the-Son, to become one of us in order to pay the terrible price of the debt of our sins. When Jesus Christ died on the Cross for us, He paid the price for our sins and He paid the price for the 7 great Sacraments He has given to the Church, including the Sacrament of Reconciliation. When we are truly sorry for our sins, and we confess those sins to a priest in Confession, it is like our Heavenly Father runs to meet us and to forgive us. He doesn’t demand that we pay Him back for the harm caused by our sins. Instead, God gives up what we owe to Him through the sacrifice of Jesus on the Cross!
Solidarity: This is the final step in returning back to our family. Solidarity means we are united with others, especially that we are united as FAMILY. When the prodigal son repented and His father forgave him, he became re-united with his family. And that is the goal for all of us. When we repent of our sins and God forgives us, the spiritual harm we have done to ourselves by sin can be replaced by the joy of solidarity, the joy of becoming more united with God and all His family!

Father of goodness and love, hear our prayers for the sick members of
our community and for all who are in need. Amid mental and physical
suffering may they find consolation in your healing presence. Show your
mercy as you close wounds, cure illnesses, make broken bodies whole and
free downcast spirits. May these special people find lasting health and
deliverance, and so join us in thanking you for all your gifts. We ask this
through Lord Jesus who healed those who believed. Amen
