from having watched the 2006 movie ver-sion of Perrotta’s “Little Children,” whichshe deems similar to “Mrs. Fletcher” inits “lifting the veil on suburbia, and look-ing underneath the sprinklers at thedreams and desires and wants and long-ings of people you might not necessarilypay attention to. By Jay BobbinFiguratively and literally, every partKathryn Hahn has played has led her to“Mrs. Fletcher.”The actress’ experience in roles sup-porting or main — and comedic or dra-matic — proves cumulative in the HBOseries that premieres Sunday, Oct. 27.Based on the novel by Tom Perrotta(“The Leftovers”), who also wrote thedebut episode, it casts “Transparent”alum Hahn in the title role of a divorcedsenior-center director who finds it achallenge to adjust when her only child(portrayed by Jackson White) goes offto college. The empty-nest situationtakes Eve Fletcher down a surprisingpath of self-discovery.“I devoured the book and the pilotscript,” Hahn says of “Mrs. Fletcher,”which also features Casey Wilson andthe late Cameron Boyce (“Descen-dants”). HAVING A SAFE HALLOWEENA statewide effort is underway to make Halloween 2019 a safe one.

Halloween is coming on Thursday, October 31. State and local govern-ment agencies recognize that Halloween can be a dangerous night forchildren walking on dark roadways across the country. They havelaunched the Street Smart NJ campaign to make the public aware ofways of staying safe during Halloween. Here are some useful safety tips from Street Smart NJ:Tips for everyone with cell phones: Remember, heads up, phones

down, whether you are operating a vehicle or crossing the road. Tips for pedestrians: Make sure that costumes don’t impair your

child’s ability to walk or see. Safety experts warn against wearing masksthat can limit visibility. Before crossing a street, look left, right, and then left again. Use side-

walks. When there are no sidewalks, walk next to the street while facingtraffic.Be visible. Parents should add reflective tape to costumes or make

sure that children carry a light or a glow stick to ensure that vehiclescan see them at night. Be seen on Halloween. Use crosswalks. Wait for the walk signal. Avoid distractions. Don’t use

electronic devices while crossing. Cross at corners and intersectionsand use marked crosswalks whenever possible. Do not cross between

parked cars, because it makes it difficult for mo-torists to see you. Tips for drivers: Obey the speed limit. The AAA sug-

gests driving five miles per hour below the postedspeed limit on Halloween. Stop for pedestrians. New Jersey law requires mo-

torists to stop for pedestrians in crosswalks. Viola-tions of the law carry a $200 fine and two points onyour license.Don’t drive distracted. Don’t use electronic devices while driving. New

Jersey prohibits talking and texting while driving. Fines range from$200 for first-time offenders to as much as $800 for repeat offenders.Drive sober. On Halloween night between 2009 and 2013, 119 people

were killed by drunk driving, according to the National Highway SafetyTraffic Administration. Don’t turn on red without looking for pedestrians. If everyone follows these tips, Halloween 2019 will be a safe and en-

joyable time. Please be careful as you travel around our communityon Halloween. I ask all trick-or-treaters and drivers to be extra-cautious.Many parents and guardians will help their children stay safe by escort-ing them from street to street on Halloween. We want to keep October31 a safe and happy date for everyone.

HOLLYWOODBy Tony RizzoHOLLYWOOD — The CW is preparing a reboot of“Walker, Texas Ranger” with “Supernatural” starJared Padalecki in the title role. Padalecki playedDean Forester in “Gilmore Girls” from 2000-05and then went right into “Supernatural” as SamWinchester for the past 15 seasons. This will be ataller, younger Cordell Walker. Jared is37 years old and stands 6 feet, 4inches tall, while Chuck Norris was 53when he was Walker and stood 5 feet,10 inches. How did the CW get the idea forPadalecki to play Walker? Maybe it wasthat 2011 episode of “Supernatural,”in which he played the Texas ranger.Jared also starred in “House of Wax”(2005), with CW star Chad MichaelMurray and Elisha Cuthbert. Notably, the audience always applauded whenthe villain got Paris Hilton. Jared wed ac-tress Genevieve Cortese (whom he meton the set of “Supernatural”) in 2010, and theyhave two sons and a daughter.Norris, now 79, is wed to former model Gena O’Kel-ley, 23 years his junior. She brought two childrento their union and had twins with him in 2001.Norris also has 13 grandchildren. His last film was“The Expendables 2,” a virtual who’s who of actionstars with Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li,Dolph Lundgren, Liam Hemsworth, Jean-ClaudeVan Damme, Bruce Willis and ArnoldSchwarzenegger. Now that Sylvester Stallone has retired Rambo (so

he says), he’s far from retiring. He’s currentlyshooting the thriller “Samaritan,” about a youngboy searching for a superhero who vanished 20years earlier.

***Could’ve eaten the “Downton Abbey” film with aspoon, it was that delicious. It was like the six yearsof the PBS series had never ended. Producers saidbefore its release that a sequel would depend onhow moviegoers greeted it, and judging from the

box office response they’re now consid-ering making a “Downton Abbey” filmevery year as long as fans want them.

***Ana de Armas, who impressed in“Blade Runner 2049,” has three filmsready for release: “Wasp Network,”with Penelope Cruz and Gael GarciaBernal; the mystery thriller “KnivesOut,” starring Daniel Craig, ChrisEvans, Michael Shannon, Jamie LeeCurtis and Christopher Plummer (due

Nov. 27); and the crime drama “TheNight Clerk,” with Tye Sheridan, Helen

Hunt and John Leguizamo. She is set to play Mar-ilyn Monroe next. The Netflix film is simply called“Blonde,” and she’ll have Oscar-winner AdrienBrody, Emmy-winner Bobby Cannavale and LilyFisher supporting her. Also in the film is ChrisLemmon, whose father, Jack Lemmon, starredwith Marilyn Monroe in “Some Like It Hot.”Carol Burnett returns to movies in the Netflix mu-sical comedy “Sorta Like a Rock Star,” about anabnormally optimistic teenage girl who must facea devastating loss. Does Carol pull her ear inmovies? We’ll find out!

By Jay BobbinIn the coming days, you have your choiceof sentences: “Boo!” or, “Boo, hand me theremote.”As usual, the approach of Halloweenmeans scary — or at least seasonal — stuffon television, between specials, seriesepisodes and shiver-inducing movies. Here’sa look at some highlights mostly intended to

make your hair, and possibly that remotecontrol, stand on end.“It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown”(Sunday, Oct. 27, ABC): The season’s sec-ond airing of the genteel, animated“Peanuts” classic finds Linus staking out apumpkin patch to find the gourd he deems“the most sincere.”“Friday the 13th” (Monday, Oct. 28,AMC) — If camp counselors hadn’tlearned to stay out of masked Jason’s way,a franchise might not have been born. Thismarathon includes the 1980 original and the2009 remake, plus a number of the in-be-tween chapters.“Scream” (Oct. 28, Freeform): As mucha parody of horror movies as a thriller itself,Neve Campbell’s first round as heroine Sid-ney is followed here by “Scream 2” and“Scream 3.”“Halloween” (Tuesday, Oct. 29, AMC)— It just wouldn’t be this holiday withoutJamie Lee Curtis’ series-launching 1978turn as targeted babysitter Laurie Strode.Several sequels and the 2009 remake alsoare in a three-day marathon that continuesright through Halloween.“American Horror Story: 1984”(Wednesday, Oct. 30, FX): The latestweekly episode of this series doesn’t

Halloween brings many familiar chillers back to TV

merely coincide with Halloween, each newseason purposely is launched so that it stillwill be running at the peak of the scare sea-son.“Halloweentown” (Thursday, Oct. 31,Disney Channel): Screen legend DebbieReynolds headlines this family-friendly fan-tasy that inspired several sequels, all ofwhich will be shown right after the original.“The 13 Scariest Movies of All Time”(Oct. 31, The CW): Here’s a way to get avariety of Halloween-night chills at once. This hour-long special gathers scenes fromseveral of film history’s top fright shows —and we’d bank on “The Exorcist” makingan appearance here.“Supernatural” (Oct. 31, TNT): A nine-episode marathon of the frightful adventuresof the Winchester brothers (Jensen Ackles,Jared Padalecki) is drawn from various sea-sons of the series.“Bride of Frankenstein” (Oct. 31, TCM):Elsa Lanchester sports one of the most fa-mous hairstyles in the annals of film as partof the classic movie channel’s entire Hal-loween of horror pictures.“Hocus Pocus” (Oct. 31, Freeform): Oneof the most popular of all Halloween attrac-tions gives the sibling witches played byBette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker andKathy Najimy a big workout with five con-secutive showings.“Goosebumps” (Oct. 31, FXM): AuthorR.L. Stine himself is a character, as playedby Jack Black, as figures from his popularnovels escape into the real world.

AMC’s showing of the original “Fridaythe 13th” movie Monday is among tele-vision’s horror highlights leading up toHalloween.

tastytv by George DickieScripting dinner: Food on TV

comedies and dramasJust as it is often at the center of family or social gatherings, food can

also serve as the catalyst for some memorable TV.Be it a sitcom from long ago or a drama series from the present, food

can spur conversation, provoke conflict or be a source of laughter. Andkeep viewerscoming back forseconds, thirdsand fourths.

The followingare few that wethink are note-worthy.

“M*A*S*H”(CBS, 1972-83):Amid all the com-plaining aboutArmy food in thisclassic KoreanWar comedy, there was Hawk-eye (Alan Alda)pining for andeventually order-ing from Adam’sRibs in Chicago(but forgot to askfor the coleslaw);Klinger (JamieFarr) waxing on

about Tony Packo’s hot dogs in his hometown of Toledo, Ohio; and Radar(Gary Burgho ) coming up with a Spam lamb to replace the real one heset free, lest it become the main course at a 4077th Greek festival.

“Alice” (CBS, 1976-85): By default, this sitcom about the misadven-tures of waitresses (Linda Lavin, Polly Holliday, Beth Howland) at aPhoenix greasy spoon diner had food built into its premise. Viewers gob-bled it up like burgers and fries.

“Seinfeld” (NBC, 1989-98): For a show that was supposed to be aboutnothing, there certainly was a lot of food talk going on. From the “SoupNazi” episode where there was “no soup for you!” to the fat-free yogurtthat caused Jerry (Jerry Seinfeld) to pack on the pounds to the KennyRogers Chicken joint that kept Kramer (Michael Richards) up at night, food certainly had a significant presence – especially when you considermany scenes took place in a diner.

“Gilmore Girls” (WB Network, 2000-07): Rory and Lorelai’s (AlexisBledel, Lauren Graham) obsession with food was downright charmingand provided fodder for a lot of laughs. But their diet was a tad unhealthywith marshmallows, frozen pizza and Pop Tarts serving as Gilmore sta-ples.

“Blue Bloods” (CBS, 2010-present): The weekly Reagan family dinnerhas been a fixture on the drama series since its premiere nearly a decadeago. And that’s real food that Frank (Tom Selleck), Danny (DonnieWahlberg) and the rest of the clan are consuming – though the actorsadmit they have to pace themselves in the face of multiple takes. Passthe antacid, please.

“Hannibal” (NBC, 2013-15): If you can forget for a moment wherethose luscious-looking beef tips and cutlets came from, you’ll find your-self impressed by the photography of the meals the title serial killer pre-pares and consumes. First-rate food porn, if somewhat gruesome.

“iZombie” (The CW, 2015-19): While we’re on the subject, humanbrains was what’s for dinner in this irreverent crime comedy about amed school resident (Rose McIver) who indulged in an unusual perk ofher job.“Alice”
