PENSHURST WEST PUBLIC SCHOOL NEWSLETTER Term 3, Week 2 From The Principal’s Desk Last week we commenced an intensive term with the recognition of NAIDOC week, which was celebrated during the school holidays. Our school produced individually designed boomerangs as a representation of the day in conjunction with discussions centered on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture within the classrooms. Our first lessons of Jellybeans Music and Scope IT were received with great enthusiasm. At Scope IT most of the students were introduced to simple coding. The lessons will continue to develop the concepts of coding and students will move through a curriculum set down for this area. ‘Coding’, which was featured on 60 Minutes, has been in the news over the last month. It is seen by the Education Department as a critical skill for students to learn. The new technology syllabus will feature coding within the learning expectations and outcomes in the future. At Penshurst West, we are already trying to expand the opportunities for the students to take coding into further areas. The Jellybeans Music program also started this week for K-2 students. There was plenty of positive feedback from teachers and students alike as the engagement was clearly displayed on the children’s faces. In the coming three weeks our school will be involved in a number of events and performances. On Monday August 1 NSW Public Education Week will commence. We will hold our Book Character Parade, where all of the children dress up as their favourite character. This is followed by our open classrooms and performances by our talented students. On Tuesday our performers will travel to Rockdale Plaza to perform in public. This again is a fantastic opportunity for our students. Our groups will perform at 10.30am on 2 nd August. If you have the opportunity to come and watch either of these events, please do so. There was a promotional flyer sent home last week with the events that are coming up. The flyer has also been attached at the end of this newsletter. Finally, over the past 8 days the school has hosted a Central Principal from Toronto who has been looking at our education system. He has been very impressed with the programs that are being delivered at the school and has shared some of the ideas that are used in his district. These exchanges have been very satisfying in hearing that we are using teaching practices that are strongly aligned with evidence and research. I commend the teachers of Penshurst West on the delivery of their educational programs for our students. External Validation Penshurst West is going through a process of external validation this year. We are one of the first schools to go through this process and, although it is a lot of work, we are able to use the school excellence framework to demonstrate through various forms of evidence how our school is performing. This goes far beyond a standardised test given once a year and delves into the Teaching, Learning and Leadership across the whole school. As part of the collection of evidence, I have examined our data on consequences (Blue Slips) and compared this with previous years. Our data indicates that for Semester 1 2016 the number of contacts was 64 by 33 students. Of this, 23 students had one contact and did not return. The type of contact has also drastically changed to more minor infringements.

These changes over the last two and a half years can be traced to the introduction of PBIS, the consistency of teacher involvement and the explicit teaching of expectations of behaviour across the different areas of the school. Parental support has also been critical to the improvement of the school tone and climate.

POP – Parent Online Payment

system A new exciting innovation for our community is the introduction of online payments for school activities. This is part of the LMBR reforms that this school has been a part of for the past four years. It is now possible for parents to make online payments to the school for amounts owing for students, via a secure payment page hosted by Westpac. Payments can be made using either a Visa or MasterCard credit or debit card, and can be made via computer, tablet or mobile phone The payment page is accessed from the front page of the school’s website by selecting $ Make a payment. Items that can be paid include voluntary school contributions, subject contributions, excursions, sales to students and creative and practical arts activities (these include subject contributions, excursions or sport).

There is also a category called ‘Other’ this to cover items not covered in the previous headings, Other can be used to make a complete payment of a school invoice. These may be programs like our Jelly Beans Music or Scope IT initiatives. When you access the $ Make a payment you must enter:

the student’s name, and

class and reference number OR

the student’s name, and

date of birth.

These details are entered each time you make a payment as student information is not held within the payment system. There is also the option to enter the Student Registration Number and invoice number. These are not used at our school, please leave these blank. This is a secure payment system hosted by Westpac to ensure that your credit/debit card details are captured in a secure manner, these details are not passed back to the school. You have the ability to check and change any details of the payment before the payment is processed. Receipts can be emailed and/or printed. Details of the payments are passed daily to the school where they will be receipted against your child’s account. As a receipt has been issued from the payment page a further receipt will not be issued by the school. We are hoping this will make payments easier and more convenient. Permission notes will still need to be signed and sent in.

ICAS Results The Science results have been notified to the school with the students achieving one High Distinction, four Distinctions, one credit and one Merit award from fourteen entrants. Congratulations.

Peer Support Program

Lesson 8 In this week’s final session of Living Positively the children reflected on what they have learnt in Peer Support. They remembered to think optimistically, persevere and use positive self-talk. The children learned about a model - I laugh, I live, I love. This will help them to remember the activities they enjoy, their strengths and to show appreciation to others.

Follow up activity: Discuss with your child ways they can live positively.

PBIS

Students at Penshurst West Public School have been revising the School Values and ways to make positive choices in the classroom and on the playground. Our Positive Behaviour in Schools (PBIS) program explicitly teaches the rules of our school and behavioural expectations. Each week, students engage in a short PBIS lesson to discuss the expected behaviours in different areas of the school. Our merit system of Buzzies, Bronze Awards and Value Awards reinforces the PBIS program in our school.

Week 1: Respect in the classroom Last week, students revised ways to show respect in the classroom. The focus areas were following teacher instructions, using polite language and listening when someone is speaking. Congratulations to the Value Award recipients for exhibiting respect in the classroom.

Week 2: Responsibility in the classroom

This week, students were reminded of what it means to be responsible. Congratulations to our Value Award recipients who were selected for taking care of their belongings in the classroom, for completing set tasks and trying their best.

Welcome Back from the Student Leaders

Welcome back everyone to Semester 2. We are looking forward to having a great second half of the year. We are very proud of our efforts as student leaders in Semester 1. One of our best initiatives last semester was the introduction of a weekly environmental award. As a result of this innovation the school is looking cleaner and tidier and all students are showing real pride in our school. Another initiative was the borrowing of equipment during lunch. This has led to a much happier playground. We look forward, this semester, to helping make this school a better place for children to learn and play. Your student leaders, Lauren, Liam, Sasha, Brendan, Summer and Benjamin

Canteen Update

The cost of sushi is now $3 per roll. This increase was due to a price rise at our supplier Penshurst Gourmet Sushi, who also sell them at their shop for three dollars. Olaf Ice-creams are no longer available due to supplier discontinuation. A new exciting replacement will be available to purchase from the canteen around September. Finally, JJ’s, Red Rock Deli Plain Chips and the new Piranha Gluten Free BBQ Snaps are $1 per packet.

Canteen Olympic Lunch Days

To tie in with the Olympic celebrations, the canteen will be running three special lunch order days, themed with foods from different featured countries. These will be held over three Wednesday’s and will replace our normal canteen menu. The following will be available:

Week 3 Wednesday 3rd August - India/China Butter Chicken

Beef Noodles

Vegetable noodles (vegetarian option)

Week 4 Wednesday 10th August - Greece/Italy Chicken Skewers with Pita bread and Tzatziki

Spaghetti Bolognaise

Spaghetti Napolitana (vegetarian option)

Week 5 Wednesday 17th August - America/Mexico Cheeseburger

Beef Nachos

Bean Nachos (vegetarian option) Each meal will cost $5 and will include a drink. If your child wishes to order on these days, please assist us by ordering the Monday before each Wednesday by filling in the attached order form and handing it into the canteen with your money (no need for a bag as this will be supplied). Alternatively, you can also order for all 3 weeks at once. A detailed Menu will be available at the canteen. Also if you are able to help (even for 1/2 an hour) please see Melissa Tucker, Rebecca Harrison or Danielle Azzopardi (either one can usually be found at the canteen).
