THE PENSHURST RSL PANTHERS
JUNIOR AFL CLUB With the final days of summer upon
us we are rapidly gearing up for
winter 2015. Registrations have
commenced for all players from the
4 and 5 year olds in junior Auskick
through to the mighty 17s and all
old and new players are encouraged
to register online via the website
www.penshurstpanthers.com.au. As
an added incentive we have some
great deals for new players in the
12s, 13s and14s so if you know any
young players keen for a game
please refer them across.
The first games of the season kick
off on Sunday 19 April while training
starts up in March. Some of the
older teams have commenced pre-
season training from Sunday the
22nd February.
This year we continue to see a
number of players in the Sydney
Swans Academy and it is great to
see the Penshurst RSL Panthers
boys so well represented. This year
the St.George Dragons Australian
Football Club is again running their
“St.George Academy” and we have
a good representation of players
from the 15s and 17s who will
complete the program. This is a
great initiative of St.George that
provides a pathway from junior to
senior AFL.
On the evening of Thursday 26th
March we have some Swans players
coming up to Olds Park to meet the
players and run a few drills. Check
our website for details closer to the
date but all boys and girls are
welcome to come on up, meet the
players and see what AFL and the
Panthers are all about.
Thanks for your support and see
you round the grounds!

TRAVEL CLUB Apart from attending a performance of ‘Dirty Dancing’ earlier in the month, the Sydney Harbour Fun Boat cruise on 29 January was our first day tour of the year. 56 of us were able to squeeze on to a Pegasus coach for the shortish trip. Morning tea was at the lovely Sir Joseph Banks Park at Botany, the popular home to many types of water bird. Three ducks took a fancy to our group and, with no fear of being trodden on, were happy to hang around our feet waiting for the morning tea crumbs – not that they got many!
With only a handful of outside people joining our group, we boarded the Fun Boat at The Star Wharf. Another morning tea awaited us, followed by all sorts of games that this boat is famous for.
An extra special guest, Elvis, put on a passable performance and then left the building so that we could enjoy their roast lunch. We had a birds-eye view of Barangaroo’s progress and the captain’s commentary was interesting, as our boat motored into some areas unseen on the regular ferry routes. The Balls Head Coal Loader in Waverton, with its remarkable old wharf and two ships alongside awaiting restoration, is a fascinating part of Sydney’s history. One of these vessels was the former, very popular “MV Baragoola”, a regular on the Circular Quay to Manly route until January 1983. Not far away from here was an Australian Navy facility, the HMAS Waterhen where there were a couple of boats docked, and moored nearby
was the “Destine”, a small oil products tanker which has the important job of refuelling Sydney’s visiting cruise ships.
After an enjoyable 3½ hours, we rejoined our coach for a pleasant drive of an hour or so to the Eastern Suburbs, stopping at The Gap to admire the remarkable view. By this time the winds had whipped up and the Tasman Sea was looking decidedly choppy, but the surfboarders were having a wonderful time in the swell as we drove by Bondi Beach. It was then time to head back to Penshurst where we arrived at 4.45pm.
If you’d like to join our Travel Club, please e-mail: [email protected] or telephone 9533 5809.
