SUB CLUB NEWS

Our Christmas Lights tour on 17 December was excellent, but our lovely city didn’t put on as good a show as it is capable of. The Town Hall, St Mary’s Cathedral, the Mar-tin Place Christmas Tree plus a smattering of other buildings looked great, but that was it really. On the other hand, thousands of suburban residents all over Sydney spent much time, effort and money decorating their homes. In the latter part of our tour, we vis-ited one of these areas, strolling through Second Street, Ashbury, before enjoying a late supper and arriving back at Penshurst after 11 pm.

Much of the 2015 Travel Club pro-gram is now organised and the first

day tours of the year: Sydney Har-bour Fun Boat cruise on 29 January and the Mystery Trip on 26 Febru-ary, are virtually full. The first of our two longer trips: Victoria and King Island in March is also full. The second is currently available and bookings are now being ac-cepted for a 19-day two-island trip to New Zealand with Evergreen Tours from 7 - 25 November. Some details are yet to be confirmed, but the basic itinerary is on our web-site:http://pentravelclub.weebly.com.

Do let us know if you are inter-ested in any of our forthcoming trips, as there is always a waiting list in place and cancellations do occur. You would need to be a

member of Penshurst RSL Club and pay an extra $6 (per financial year) to join the Travel Club. Our meet-ings are held from 6.45 pm on the first Wednesday of every month in the Club’s Auditorium. Our next is 7 January and you are very wel-come to come along to see what we are all about. Opening that night will be the “Cockatoo Run”, a day’s train ride to Robertson using a vintage diesel locomotive, de-parting from Hurstville on Sunday 12 April.

We would like to wish the Club’s management and staff and all members a very happy, healthy and safe New Year!

SUB CLUB NEWS

This year was the 60th anniversary of the club and we celebrated the occasion on and off the field throughout the year. We also be-came a part of the broader AFL GSJ Sydney Harbour region and our games moved to Sundays. We have expanded and prospered in this expanded competition with teams playing from Heathcote to Glebe, and anywhere in between. This expansion resulted in some entertaining and challenging games of AFL and development of friendships and relationships at all levels.

Registrations were strong and we had our best playing numbers on record with over 210 children signed up from under 5s through to talented under 17s. Pleasingly we had a record number of young Auskick boys and girls who really enjoyed really enjoyed the train-ing, mateship and game days with their new friends.

On the field we had a successful season. In August we had 3 teams play in the Grand Finals with the 14s and 15s playing at home at Olds Park whilst the 11s had to be transferred to Macquarie Univer-sity due the wet weather. The un-der 11s played hard but went down fighting against Miranda whilst the Panthers Under 14s and

Under 15s were victorious against some tough opposition. Teams in most other age groups also fared well playing deep into the finals series against some tough compe-tition.

Other 2014 highlights included:

The continuing, selfless con-tribution from many of our families is what makes our club a success.

Penshurst Auskick Co-ordinator Matt Williams was named the 2014 regional coordina-tor of the year in recognition of all Matt and his wonderful team of Auskick parents do for the club.

In early July the annual AFL GSJ carnival for u13s-U17s was held at Cherrybrook and there were 30 Penshurst RSL Panthers players selected in to represent Sydney South across the four age groups. Our boys represented the Sydney South region admirably and all our teams were competi-tive every day.

Around 20 players participat-ing in the Sydney Swans Academy across all ages.

A number of Penshurst play-ers were selected for the various school state teams and performed extremely well.

On the 8th & 9th June we hosted the junior development days for the U9s to U12s. It was a spectacular sight at Olds Park see-ing young players come from all over Sydney to our home ground.

On Saturday 12 July a num-ber of Auskickers played in a game at Olds Park in the curtain raiser before the AFL Sydney Premier Di-vision game between St George and Western Suburbs. Auskickers were also well represented at Syd-ney Swans half time games throughout the season.

The Regional Committee awarded the 2014 Sydney Harbour White (u11-u17) Grand Finals to Penshurst at olds Park. This was a just reward for our organisational effort by the dedicated band of helpers, who give so much to Pen-shurst and to junior footy.

Though it is coming into sum-mer the St.George Dragons AFL Under19s have commenced pre-season training a number of Pan-thers players are moving up into those ranks.

Replaced a number of our ageing playing guernseys complete with a new design and also provide each player a hoodie for training and game day under the Penshurst RSL Panthers emblem and com-

memorating 60 years.

The season ends with us in a solid financial position again.

Our support base of loyal, committed, hardworking Panthers has continued to grow.

The support of the RSL has contin-ued to enable us to provide first class equipment and facilities to our players and maintain afford-able and stable registration fees over several years. We thank the RSL members, Board, management and staff for their support and look forward to a continuation our long association.

We are now into planning for next season and registrations have opened. Details and links to regis-tration are on our webpage www.penshurstpanthers.com.au or contact our Registrar Liz Moore or anyone of the committee for details.
