The Malaysian Palm Oil Board has successfully invented a dihydroxyl fatty acid based on palm oil based oleic acid which has been named 9, 10-dihydroxystearic acid (9, 10-DHSA). Due to the development of the oleochemical industry in Malaysia, palm based unsaturated fatty acids (especially oleic acid) are easily available and provide an easy source of raw materials for this invention. However, this invention is also applicable to oleic acids derived from other types of oils and/or fats. The said dihydroxystearic acid (OHSA) is a specialty chemical, derived from epoxidation of oleic acid with either peracetic or performic acid followed by hydrolysis with hydrogen donors such as water. Currently, palm oil based crude OHSA is prepared in a pilot plant located in the premises of the Malaysian Palm Oil Board, at the rate of 500kg OHSA per batch run. OHSA is used as primary and secondary emulsifiers, coating agent for pigments and gelling agent for oils and/or fats in coloured cosmetics formulations and research.

Dr. Hamdan Noor is currently a Professor of Medical Physiology, Faculty of Medicine in Cyberjaya University College of Medical Science. He did his post-graduate studies in the Nuffield Department of Clinical Biochemistry, John Radcliffe Hospital, University of Oxford. He had also served in the Medical Faculties of Universiti Putra Malaysia and SEGi University. His vast experience in teaching Medical Physiology enabled him to author a number of series of Medical Physiology modules including Introductory Medical Physiology, Endocrinology, Cardiovascular System, Musculoskeletal System, Respiratory System, Nervous System, Gastrointestinal System, and Urinary System series. The modules in each series are designed to help the students acquire knowledge via the “student-centred learning” approach where they would explore physiological principles themselves by working through the Learning Activities generously provided in each of the Modules. Clinical examples are appropriately embedded in the Learning Activities to stimulate application of physiological principles in real life situations. It has high market demand for its edible nature and it is also vulnerable to leachate contamination. Based on the findings of this research, the risk of heavy metals accumulation in fish highly occurred in the gills followed by the muscle (the edible part that we eat). A probable health risk exists from heavy metals exposure of municipal waste landfill leachate through fish consumption.

Beliau berkelulusan Ph.D (Alam Sekitar dan Pembangunan) daripada Institut Alam Sekitar dan Pembangunan (LESTARI), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. This book spotlights incarceration as an act of “compassionate intention” for juveniles. It narrates in detail a doctoral study which used narrative inquiry to investigate the construction of self-identity by incarcerated female adolescents involved in a story-telling program in a juvenile detention facility. A combination of critical theory, feminism, and the Islamic religious views of the researcher served as the theoretical and methodological foundation of the study. The study highlights how the social and institutional surveillance which constantly framed the lives of these incarcerated adolescents tended to preserve their low sense of status and to undermine their sense of intellectuality. The study also shows how the participants’ self-identity constructions can be directly associated with critical literacy, thus providing a means for empowerment through narrative as a form of self-inquiry, a stage for confrontation, and a channel for personal revelations.
