THE Minister of Police, Nathi Mthethwawarned South Africans not to resort to acts ofintimidation, violence and killing when theyare dissatisfied with service delivery.

The country has witnessed serious acts of vio-lence including murder during some of the pro-tests.

To show their commitment to end this law-lessness and total disdain, SA Police have acombined total of 118 years’ imprisonment onconvictions since the beginning of the year un-der their belt.

The 118 years imprisonment resulted fromsuccessful prosecution of 15 people. The heftiestsentence was handed to one accused in Gau-teng, who received a sentence of 40 years im-prisonment.

These were arrests of perpetrators chargedwith various criminal acts including murder, damage to property, lawlessness and public vio-

lence from January to June this year, said theMinister, adding that most of the arrests wereeffected during illegal protests which also tar-geted foreign nationals and looting of theirshops as well destruction of various municipali-ty offices.

During the same period, over R40 000 fineswere issued to these perpetrators.

“We want to highlight this point and com-mend our police officers because there has beenthis misconception that those who are arrestedduring illegal gatherings and violent protestsare never convicted or even walk free after acourt appearance. The statistics above indicatethe opposite.

“Working together with the National Prose-cuting Authority, we are now beginning to seeareal stingonthosewhobreakthe law.Wehopeit will send a message out there that whilst werespect the right to protest, we shall not tolerateany lawlessness or anarchy,” said Mthethwa.

The minister urged law abiding citizens tocomeforwardwithinformationinhelpingtrace

some of these provocative elements.Hesaid,“Aswehaveseenonmanyoccasions,

many protests have been accompanied by seri-ous provocations, intimidations, public vio-lence and even elements of criminality. As ex-pected, when police arrest the perpetrators atthe scene, usually nobody claims responsibilityfor these actions as such rendering the investi-gations very difficult, particularly in securingconvictions in courts.”

While government recognised the democrat-icrightsofanypersontoexpress theirgrievanc-es, whether through a public protest or any oth-er legal gathering as stipulated within the la-bour laws, such rights however, do not implythat those who do not want to participate in astrike must be intimidated, beaten and theirproperties destroyed, according to the Minister.

Mthethwa said police had the capacity to han-dle public protests. He said they were guided byclear policies on how to put in place appropri-ate, effective operational strategies and sys-tems.

Heemphasizedthat in2011 theMinistryofPo-lice passed the Public Order Policing policythrough which the SAPS is now standardizingthe training of the public order policing unit,as well as enhancing its human and physical re-source capacities. Howevere, he tressed thatwhilst the policy guides police on operationaldeliverables, protesters’ conduct remains cru-cial in this regard so that we avert any potentialtensions.

During his Budget Vote in May this year, theMinister informed the nation that during the2012/13 financial year, 12 399 crowd-related inci-dents were responded to and successfully stabi-lised, including 10 517 peaceful incidents suchas assemblies, gatherings and meetings. Unfor-tunately, of these incidents, 1 882 were violentincidents and police effected 3 680 arrests.

“We have now introduced a mandatory Pub-lic Order Policing training curriculum that isintended for new recruits as a means to developa support base for the first line of response topublic order incidents,” he stated.

A NUMBER of Nelson Mandela Bay boxerscould find themselves challenging for thehighest prize in the national professionalranks - the national titles, in the not too dis-tant future.

And that augurs well for the region whichused to be known as the Mecca of boxing inSouth Africa.

High on the list is Eastern Cape Middle-weight champion Makhosonke Zwengu ofKwaNobuhle.

A top rated Middleweight contender in thecountry, Zwengu is occupying the numberone spot, which means that he is the manda-tory challenger for KZN South African cham-pion Christopher Buthelezi.

Port Elizabeth’s Masixole Botile lies atnumber 6 in this division.

Unathi Jacobs, also of KwaNobuhle is ratedat Number 6 in the country’s Cruiserweights. This means that champion Daniel Bruwermay choose to defend against him when he

took a voluntary defence. But it is in the Light Heavyweight division

that Jacobs’ stakes are high. In this division, the fighting police official is ranked atnumber three for Tshepang Mohale’s title.

With KZN’s Wiseman Dlomo stripped ofhis national diadem because of his failure torenew his boxing licence after numerous re-minders to do so, Boxing SA (BSA) Directorof Operations Loyiso Mtya has recommend-ed that BSA Ratings Committee approve thetop rated boxers Anton Nel (Gauteng) andKZN’s Hein van Bosch to contest for the va-cant heavyweight title.

That gives local lad Ivan Strydom, the ECHeavyweight champion lying at number 5 inthe division a closer possibility of challeng-ing the national crown.

Though No.2 rated SA Welterweight con-tender Mziwoxolo Ndwayana is from eRhini,he boxes more in Nelson Mandela Bay andthe region would like to see him challengingTsiko Mulovhedzi for the title.

Waiting in the wings is Anelisa Gungqisa,a Walmer township pugilist who belted at

number 6 in the Lightweight division afterdispatching highly rated Zola Tunywa fromEast London recently.

“But, we’ll need 2 to 3 fights before we couldeven think of fighting for the national title,”

said Gungqisa’s trainer Caiphus Ntante.Lusindiso Siyo is at number 7 in the Junior

Bantamweight division while Simo Mbandecould consider himself lucky for keeping thenumber 10 spot in the bantamweight.
