HOUSANDS of SouthAfricanNa-
tional Defence Force (SANDF)
members including SANDF com-
mander-in-chief President Jacob
Zuma are expected to be in Nel-
son Mandela Bay for the fourth annual
Armed Forces Week which takes place this
month.
As part of Armed Forces Week, there will
be various events leading up to Armed For-
ces Day which is celebrated on February 21.
This year, the events have been planned
by the South African Navy and will provide
a range of Navy platforms open to the public.
Armed Forces Week also commemorates
the day of the countrys single largest naval
disaster, the sinking of the troopship SS
Mendi on February 21, 1917. The ship was
rammed by the SS Darro and 616 members
of the SA Native Labour Corps died.
SANDF Spokesperson Brigadier General
Xolani Mabanga, said Armed Forces Day is
a day of honour.

ArmedForcesDay is new; it started in 2012
as a day where we honour the SANDF and
think of those who have lost their lives. We
also acknowledge those in the SANDF who
have excelled.
We are excited about this years events be-
ing in PE because it will be the first time that
theSAnavywill be showcasing their capabili-
ties. The events were previously conducted
inland but this is the first time it will be coas-
tal.
There will also be various activities where
the SANDF will visit townships in the Bay
and interact with the youth.
We also have sporting activities, commu-
nity projects and career exhibitionswherewe
will be informing the youth about careers in
the SANDF and the requirements. We will al-
so visit nearby townships and interact with
the community,Mabanga said.
There will be seven warships and a subma-
rine available for the public to view at the
PortElizabethharbouronFebruary 13 and14.
event in the Bay because the navy is not as
well-known in Port Elizabeth as it is in Cape
Town. He added that the military exercise as
part of Armed Forces Week, will be one of the
most unforgettable experiences and it is all
free of charge.
This will be the biggest military demon-
stration the country has seen since the dawn
of democracy.
There will be the firing of the weapons
from helicopters. On February 18, we will
have a night firing exercise close to the Sum-
merstrand pier.
We will have warships and there will also
be the fleet replenishment vessel SAS Drak-
ensberg, which is currently the largest ship
built for the SA Navy with a displacement of
12,500 tons and a length of 147 metres.
He added that the venue and times for other
Armed Forces Week events are still being fi-
nalised.

There will also be fan parks at Kings Beach
from February 17 to 21 where there will be
a large display of military equipment.
Themain parade held onFebruary 21, will
include a flypast by the SA Air Force and
various elements of the SA Military Health
Service taking part in the parade. Therewill
be a three-day rehearsal leading up to the
main parade where amilitarymarchwill be
held in Summerstrand.

APORTElizabeth resident found a rare item in
the cellar of his Lorraine home - a photo album
that dates back to the royal visit to the city in
1947.
Thealbumfeaturesmanypersonalmementos
and photographs ofKingGeorgeVI and the cur-
rent reigning monarch, Queen Elizabeth II.
Mario Luiters found the album by chance
while springcleaninghis cellar.Hehas recently
sent photos of the items to Sothebys in London
and he is currently awaiting feedback from
them on the value of it.
I had bought a house from a lady a few years
ago with a few outside storage rooms attached.
She asked me to throw away the contents but
I decided to see if anything could be salvaged,
Luiters said.
About a year after purchasing the house, I
discovered a small crawlspace in one of the
roomswith several antiques inside, including a
seal ring from the 1930s, gold earrings and this
very unusual album. I contacted the original
owner to return the items, but she wasnt inter-
ested in keeping them and gifted them to me.
King George VI and Queen Elizabeth paid a
visit to thecityaspart of a royal tour, alongwith
the two princesses, Elizabeth (the current
Queen of England) and Margaret in 1947. More
than 26 000 residents of the Bay turned up at St
Georges Park to greet them. This was princess
Elizabeths first official royal tour and she also
celebrated her 21st birthday in Cape Town dur-
ing the trip.
Luiters believes the album had been hidden
in the cellar for more than 68 years and be-
longed to a photographer. There are close-up
photographs of the then-princess Elizabeth and
her parents on a safari, as well as photos taken
during the tour in Port Elizabeth, Johannes-
burg, KwaZulu-Natal and ot-her stops. There
are also signed invitations from various global
newspapers.
Whoever took these photos had official ac-
cess to the royal family and carefully preserved
themementos. Iwouldlovetoseeitgotoamuse-
um or even the Queen herself to bring back
beautiful memories, Luiters said.
The album ismade up of original photos, the
original menu of the white train, the King and
Queens suitcase tags and several historically
significant signatures.
I spoke to a gentleman who was in the mili-
tary at that time who believes that he features
in several of the photographs taken. It brought
back many memories so Im sure its very spe-
cial to anyonewith an interest in that era or the
royal family, he said.
The album is currently for sale on Gumtree.
Luiters said he has no idea of the actual value
of the rare find but hewill entertain reasonable
offers.

stelsel in gebruik geneem het. Dit
word reeds in Gauteng gebruik.
Dit word allerwe as n uitstekende
stelsel bestempel, maar daar is aan-
duidingsdatdit nognie oral indiepro-
vinsie werk nie.
Nkosinathi Nhleko, minister van
polisie, en lt.genl. Kgomotso Phahla-
ne, waarnemende nasionale polisie-
hoof, het verlede week ten tyde van
die viering van Nasionale Polisiedag
di stelsel bydienuwe10111-dienssen-
trum in Korsten aangeskakel.
Die nuwe kommunikasiestelsel is
n baie veilige stelsel, en kan nie deur
buitestanders gekaap word nie. Die
stelsel sal ook kommunikasiekanale
tussen die polisie en die gemeenskap
verbeter, het Nhleko ges.
Die stelsel is ook aan n opsporing-
stelsel gekoppel en operateurs in die
inbelsentrumsal sien presieswaar el-
ke radio in die stad is.
Met die opsporingstelsel sal die
operateurs weet waar elke polisie-
beampte is sodat die naaste beampte
na n klagte uitgestuur kan word en
die reaksietyd verkort kan word.
Maar tydens n demonstrasie van
die stelsel,met sy radioswat soos eer-
stegenerasie-selfone lyk, het dit ge-
blyk dat nie al die polisiekantore n
hul onderskeie afdelings in die metro-
munisipaliteit aandie stelsel gekoppel
is nie.
Bewerings is gemaak dat slegs 15
van die 255 benodigde seintorings vir
die nuwe kommunikasiestelsel in die
provinsie opgerig en in werking is.
En die 2 000 Tetra-radios wat verle-
de week aan polisiebeamptes in die
metro-munisipaliteit uitgedeel is, is
nienaastenbygenoegvir nvolle funk-
sionerende kommunikasiestelsel tus-
sen al diemetro se polisiebeamptes en
polisiekantore nie, het n betroubare
bron beweer.
Bynavraag oorhoe gereeddienuwe
stelsel is, wou Phahlane nie meer be-
sonderhede bekend maak nie.
Alwat ek verder gaan s, is dat ons
gelukkig en trots is op hoe vermet die
nuwe stelsel gevorder is. En soos met
enige tegnologie is die stelsel nog aan
die ontwikkel.
Een van die ontwikkelings wat in
die vooruitsig gestel word, is tegnolo-
gie wat die 10111-dienssentrum in
staat sal stel om n lewendige beeld
van al die kameras in die stad te ont-
vang.
Dit is nie bekend wanneer dit in
werking gestel sal word nie.

A NEW choir that is aimed at bringing hope
to the gang-infested northern areas is about to
be born; a tabernacle choir of between 120 and
240 members.
The process of develop-
ing the concept for the
Northern Areas Tabernacle
Choir Project, as I recall,
startedwayback in 2013 and
has been highly rigorous
and consultative ever since
this gang-related violence
has transpired within the
northern areas.
InJuly2015 theNorthern
Area Tabernacle Choir
(NATChoir)wasestablished
with the hope of eradicating
all this negative publicity;
the fear and death that ac-
company the drug and gang
outbreaks, said choir director ClaudeMarks.
With thisproject Iwantpeople toknowthat
even thoughwe residewithin these crime and
poverty infested communities, there is still
hope.
The NATChoir will be this ray of hope.
Apart from themusic itwill operate as a social
system that will speak to crime and poverty.
NATChoir in partnership with different role
players will ensure that all the young people,
women and children, can access the opportuni-
ties that will enable them to grow, develop and
prosper as fully engaged, responsive and pro-
ductive citizens.
The choir will be
unique because it will
consist of talented mem-
bers between 16 and 35
years old, from around 19
neighbourhoods of the
northern areas.
They will not be gradu-
ates of music schools, but
arealumniof theschoolof
life in the troubled PE
northern areas, said
Marks.
Marks wants people to
know that there is always
hope, even amid crime
and poverty.
Thechoirmanagement
and other stakeholders would also ensure that
members have access to opportunities so that
theycangrowandthuscandevelopintoproduc-
tive citizens who respond positively to challen-
ges and opportunities.

CLOSE to 50 years ago, she opened her
own driving school; the first such school
owned by a woman of colour in Port Eliza-
beth.
Today Cecile Kathan is back in the city
after 41 years in Durban, to give back to
the community she once served.
She will be doing this by hosting a High
Tea on Saturday, February 6, at 2pm and
donating the proceeds to the Malabar
Home for the Aged.
Forty senior citizens call it home of
which 22 are frail residents. The cost per
resident per month is R1596, said Office
Administrator Mario Lewis.
Kathan said she is supporting a number
of charities of which the Home is one.
They really need support, so the open
day and the high tea are great opportuni-
ties for people to have a walk-through and
see what is being done, as well as what
the needs are.
Retired doctor Val Moodley and retired
ministers wife Anne Drake both in
their eighties are the guest speakers at
the event, which will take place at the
Malabar Community Centre in Hawor-
thia Drive.
The tickets cost R100 per person or

ALTHOUGH Thabo Makhetha-Kwinana has
spent most of her life in South Africa, she has
never forgotten her roots in Lesotho, her place
of birth.
The Nelson Mandela Bay clothing designer
crafts contemporary fashion using traditional
Basotho blankets and one of her designs, titled
Starburst Coat, is one of the 10 contenders in
Design Indabas prestigious Most Beautiful Ob-
ject in South Africa (MBOISA) 2016 exhibition.
She and another MBOISA finalist knitwear
designer Laduma Ngxokolo, whose works are
inspired by traditional Xhosa culture are both
alumni of Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Uni-
versity (NMMU) in Port Elizabeth.
Thetravellingexhibition,whichopenedinJo-
hannesburgonJanuary11,moved toDurbanon
January 26, and then Cape Town on February
8.Theoverallwinnerwillbedeterminedbypub-
licvoteandannouncedattheDesignIndabaFes-
tival in Cape Town on February 19.
The 10 finalists were nominated by a select
panel of influential commentators on South Af-
rican culture, including museum curators, ra-
dio and TV commentators, designers and edi-
tors.
Makhetha-Kwinana (28) said her use of Baso-
tho blankets was a reminder of her heritage.
Its an interpretation of my culture in mod-
erndays.These traditionalblanketsaredailyat-
tire in Lesotho. When people move away to big
cities, they leave their traditional culture be-
hind.Mywork isawayofhaving the traditional
keep up with the times.
Her Starburst Coat consists of panels that
come together at the back, resulting in the per-
ceived starburst. It was one of several items
she sent to ElleMagazine last year for a fashion
shoot and it was Elle editor Emilie Gambade
who nominated the piece.
It is uniquely African; combines heritage,
craft and beautiful proportions; it is timeless,
colourful and says a lot about who we are and
where we are from but at the same time it is ex-
ceptionally modern and very contemporary,
said Gambade.
Makhetha-Kwinana, who graduated with a
nationaldiplomain fashiondesign fromNMMU
in 2008, is a living advertisement for her bou-
tique store in Port Elizabeth, which houses her
Thabo Makhetha range. My shop is a giant
wardrobe.
Johannesburg-based Ngxokolo (29), a knit-
wear designer who completed his BTech in tex-
tile design in 2010, has won numerous awards
here and abroad for his Maxhosa by Laduma
fashion label.
HisshawlwasnominatedforMBOISA2016by
designer and curator Tracy Lee Lynch, who
said: When I started looking for theMostBeau-
tiful Object in South Africa for a piece that
I foundreallyspoketome,I foundthisparticular
piece the shawl.
I always design with an intention to make
my products relative and relevant to the South
African market as much as possible, said
Ngxokolo,who is completinghismasters inMa-
terial Futures at Londons Central Saint Mar-
tins.
The pattern in the middle section of the 3m
by1mshawlwas inspiredby the textures of ripe
umnqusho, a traditional Xhosa dish. The end
sections are inspiredby traditionalXhosadecor
embellishment styles and beadwork motifs.
