THE ASCENSION OF THE LORD
Reading I: Acts of the Apostles 1: 1-11 Reading II: Ephesians 1:17-23 Gospel: Mahew 28:16-20 Not simply recalling an historical event, the feast of the Ascension celebrates what we are and will be as the Church. Rather than focusing on the departure of Christ, this feast reminds us of his presence manifest in our midst in the Church. As St. Leo preached on this occasion centuries ago, what was previously visible in the Redeemer is now present in the rites. No longer limited by space or -me, Christ has gone away only to be available through the Spirit in the sacraments. And because he lives among us, St. Leo says, “Where the Head has gone, the Body hopes to follow.” That the ascension of Christ is a promise of what lies ahead for believers is reflected in the prayers of today’s liturgy.

PARISH OFFICE SUMMER HOURS
Beginning Tuesday, May 30th the Parish offices will be open from
8:30 am to 3:00 pm Monday through Friday
On behalf of all at St. Thomas School and St. Thomas Parish, I wish you a happy Memorial Day. Let us remember to pray for all those who have served and defended our country, and for the eternal repose of those who have passed. Let us also give thanks for the ordina-on of Fr. Lee Brokaw on Saturday as a new priest of the Diocese of Peoria. Please pray for him as he begins his ministry. Finally, I am grateful for your generosity and support of our excellent parochial school. We have been able to recently give over $180,000 of tui-on assistance to families in need. These funds come from your past contribu-ons to our school endowment and Monsignor Watson Scholarship Fund as well as your current contribu-ons to our Sponsor a Student program. Your generosity helps to keep Catholic educa-on affordable, regardless of a family’s income. Thank you. -Msgr. Gray

Working in our St. Vincent de Paul Society minis-try, I think that some-mes the best help we give the needy is connec-ng them with the right resources. Also, I’m chal-lenged to see Christ in the faces of the needy and when I have difficulty with this, a scene from the past reminds me how it feels when I fail. I s-ll remember an encounter many summers ago in my hometown. I was sauntering along in the shade of Aus-n’s butcher shop on a “going to town” Saturday a=ernoon, headed toward the Western Auto store to buy a baseball. There was a thinness about the man facing me that probably came from frequent hunger and constant moving and not enough sleep. The boy at his side, about my age of 12 yrs., shared his father’s dark eyes and broad forehead. He looked away trying not to hear the man’s muted conversa-on with me. The man held a small dusty cardboard suitcase about twice the size of a shoebox un-der his right arm, and his le= hand rested on his son’s shoulder. He was hatless and his wrinkled dress pants and once white shirt that hung on him looked out of place on the “overalls and flannel” kind of town. They had probably landed here by his decision to stay on a railroad car routed this way, unaware that the train’s des-na-on would be a dead end. “Would you have a quarter or a dime to spare?” he asked. “We haven’t had anything to eat today.” I stuered, “Sorry, no, I don’t.” He must have known my
(cont. next column)
response was false as I looked down; I had three quarters In my pocket—just enough to buy that baseball. The boy glanced up at his father and looked away again as they moved past me cau-ously, hesitant to enter the busier streets around the courthouse square. I turned and said, “Wait! You might want to go le= at this corner. See the red brick church? The priest that lives there, Fr. Scanlon, is probably home right now.” The man hesitated as he surveyed the scene. Between the cor-ner and the church stood the county jail and a farm imple-ment dealership. I realized he might benefit from more informa-on. “But you can go down this alley and be right at his back door,” I added. “Thank you” the man replied. I turned and walked on and never looked back...I trust the man and boy received beer help from Fr. Scanlon that I could have given them anyway (the baseball lasted about a week.) —Don Smith St. Vincent de Paul

The Diocese of Peoria will be conducting a planning study under the guidance of Bishop Daniel Jenky and would like to hear from you. The study will gather your opinions on a potential diocesan wide capital campaign and your participation is needed so that the Bishop can make an informed decision on whether to move forward. The Steier Group, a Catholic development and fundraising firm from Omaha has been hired to conduct the study over the next three months. Potential campaign elements to be addressed include: strengthening our parishes, increasing support for vocations and seminarians, investing in our schools, new approaches in discipleship, religious education and faith formation, attention to our growing Hispanic population and food for the poor and underserved. Parishioners will have access to a fact sheet that will detail these identified needs and will be asked to respond either in personal interview, mail surveys or online questionnaires. Everyone’s opinion is important, so continue to look for more information in upcoming bulletins.
25th and 50th Wedding Anniversaries
The Diocese is planning the annual Mass for couples cele-brating their 25th and 50th Anniversary in 2017. It will be held on Sunday, September 24, 2017. If you would like to receive an invitation to this event please call or email the parish office and we will be sure you are on the list.
