PARENT  SURVEY

The  Partners  in  Learning  parent  feedback  survey

This  term,  our  school  will  be  participating  in  the  Partners  in  Learning  parent  survey,  another  part  of  the  Tell  Them  From  Me  suite  of  surveys  (student,  teacher  and  parent  surveys)  on  student  engagement.  The  survey  asks  parents  and  carers  questions  about  different  factors  that  are  known  to  impact  on  student  wellbeing  and  engagement.

Running  this  survey  will  help  our  school  understand  parents’  and  carers’  perspectives  on  their  child’s  experience  at  school.  These  include:  communication  between  parents/carers  and  staff,  activities  and  practices  at  home  and  parent/carer  views  on  the  school's  support  of  learning  and  behaviour.  This  valuable  feedback  will  help  our  school  make  practical  improvements.

The  survey  is  conducted  entirely  online  at  home  or  on  public  computers.  The  survey  will  typically  take  15  minutes  or  less  to  complete  and  is  completely  confidential.

The  URL  entry  point  for  the  parent  survey  is:  https://nsw.tellthemfromme.com/879r3

Rose  Bay  Public  School  Violinists  play  at  the  Sydney  Opera  House

Four  Rose  Bay  Public  students  played  at  the  Sydney  Opera  House  as  part  of  The  Festival  of  Instrumental  Music’s  Banksia  Concert  on  Tuesday  23rd  August.  Three  Year  3  students  –  David,  Lucy  and  Hadassah,  and  one  Year  6  student  –  Grace,  played  four  diverse  and  challenging  pieces,  including  one  piece  especially  commissioned  work  by  a  local  Australian  composer.

It  was  an  exciting  evening  for  all  involved  and  the  young  violinists  had  the  honour  of  playing  in  an  orchestra  with  300  student  violinists,  cellists,  bassists  and  recorder  players  from  across  NSW  in  Australia’s  most  iconic  classical  music  venue.  Thanks  to  violin  teacher  Lilia  Brodski  for  her  hard  work  getting  the  children  ready  for  the  performance.  It  was  a  night  they  will  remember  for  a  long  time.

School Uniform

We  believe  that  wearing  school  uniform  promotes  pride  in  our  school  and  sends  a  strong  message  to  the  community  that  we  have  high  expectations  and  values.  Students  wear  their  summer  uniform  in  Term  1  and  Term  4,  and  winter  uniform  in  Term  2  and  Term  3.

We  appreciate  parent  and  carer  support  in  sending  their  children  to  school,  dressed  smartly  in  correct  school  uniform.  This  includes  black  schoes  and  our  RBPS  hat.  Please  ensure  your  child’s  full  name  and  correct  class  are  on  all  of  their  belongings.

Our  online  uniform  shop  is  available  at  www.youruniformshop.com.au  Our  uniform  shop  is  open  on  Monday  afternoon  and  Wednesday  mornings.

Volunteers  Needed  You  may  have  noticed  our  trusty  team    of  parents  in  orange  vests  who  help    supervise  the  flow  of  traffic  in  the    school  pick  up  zone  in  Wilberforce  Ave  in  the  afternoons.

We  are  looking  for  a  new  team  of  volunteers  who  can  help  with  this  important  role.  It  would  invove  about  15  minutes  of  your  time  once  a  week  (3:15pm  to  3:30pm  approx)  .

The  majority  of  the  group  of  dedicated  volunteers  have  given  their  time  since  Go  with  the  Flow  started  years  ago.  We  would  like  to  say  a  big  thank  you  to  them  all.

Thank  you  to  all  school  families  who  have  given  generously  to  the  school  by  paying  the  voluntary  contribution  levy,  learning  contributions  and  settling  all  school  accounts  for  2016.

The  money  is  very  much  appreciated.  It  is  used  for  classroom  supplies,  additional  learning  opportunities  for  students  and  providing  additional  support  to  students  and  staff.  If  you  have  not  yet  paid  yours  they  are  now  well  over  due.

The  school  with  its  limited  and  restricted  budgets  and  minimal  cash  flow  does  not  have  the  capacity  to  cover  unpaid  fees.

PSSA Grand Finals Netball

What a fantastic season of PSSA Netball! All teams made it through to the semi-finals. Congratulations to both the Senior A and Senior B teams for making it through the PSSA Netball competition UNDEFEATED. The Senior A team played Double Bay Blue in the grand final and won 30 -13. The Senior B team played Vaucluse in the grand final and won 36 - 3. Well done to the Junior B Netball team who made it into the Grand Finals but unfortunately were beaten by Bondi Beach Black 13 - 7. The Junior B team put in a terrific effort this season but were knocked out in the semi finals but played so well throughout the competition. Miss Jones was very proud to coach all teams. It was wonderful to see such great skills, teamwork and sportsmanship throughout this competition. 2016 was certainly a memorable year for Rose Bay in PSSA Netball.

All four Rose Bay soccer teams had successful PSSA winter seasons this year. All teams made it through to the semi-finals, which is quite an achievement in itself. Our Senior A and Junior A teams both progressed to the grand final of their competitions after winning their semi finals by sizeable margins. After a nervous wait with wet weather pending… grand final day arrived! The Senior A’s played first (with a cheer squad of enthusiastic junior soccer players on the sideline) and beat Clovelly 2-0. The Junior A’s played a great game against Bellevue Hill and won convincingly with a score line of 3-0. Congratulations to our Senior and Junior A grand final winners! Both teams played with such great sportsmanship and school pride, which are above everything else the most important aspects of school sport. Congratulations must also go to the Senior B’s and Junior B’s both finished in 3rd place in their competition against some very strong teams. Mrs Mills and Miss Mullens have thoroughly enjoyed coaching the Rose Bay soccer teams this year and have been so impressed with the sportsmanship, attitudes and leadership skills on display each and every week.

Book  Week  2016

This term library lessons have focused on reading and discussing the nominated short listed books by The Children’s Book Council. All the nominated books are illustrated and written by Australian Authors and Illustrators.

To celebrate Book week we had Australian Author Jess Black. She has written a variety of well-known novels for 8-12 year olds and two picture books.

Kindergarten and Stage One listened to her read Moon Dance and enjoyed hearing about the animals in Bindi Irwin’s Wildlife Adventures and RSPCA Animal Tales. She told some humorous tales about the real characters and antics of David Warner the Australian cricketer in the Kaboom Series.

Stage Two listened to Jess read parts of the Keeper of the Crystals Series. Our students gave her some creative

suggestions for her new book! Stage Three used their creativity in a work shop to develop their own characters and plot. I think Jess Black would agree that Rose Bay Public School has some future Australian Authors! It was a fabulous visit and great way to celebrate Book Week 2016.

Stage 2 students have been learning how to code with Mrs Edelmuth. Here’s what they had they had to say about it. “Coding is very similar to a recipe”. “It is a series of steps needed to program something to do something”. “Learning to code is almost like learning a new language”. “Coding Dash was really fun! We had to overcome lots of obstacles and use all our knowledge of code. Some of the skills we used include; persistence, resilience, creativity, problem solving, mathematics, science and most importantly; cooperation”.

Working as a team to connect Dash to the

Writing a series of instructions for Dash to follow

Watching carefully to figure out the coding behind Dash’s movements

Year 4 is participated in Week of Tastes at the beginning of August. The aim of the program is to take the students through a series of fun exercises to:

! Enrich their vocabulary by creating a new words for taste ! Discover how all 5 senses are used to appreciate food ! Teach them how to discern sweet, sour, salty and bitter ! Develop a positive attitude towards tasting new foods ! Encourage curiosity, thinking and analytical skills when eating

During the program classes were visited by ‘food professionals’ Luca Ciano and Charmaine O’Brien. Luca is a well-known Italian chef and Charmaine’s specialty is Indian food and she has written many cookbooks.

The students who attended Luca’s session observed a cooking demonstration of pasta with his own Napoletana sauce (which he sells in supermarkets). Charmaine’s sessions involved making salads and tasting a Falooda, a popular Indian dessert.

Students also enjoyed sampling the foods! Both chefs taught the students about different ingredients including spices and herbs used in the kitchen in order to enrich students’ knowledge about food. It was a wonderful and delicious experience.

Year 1 and 2 had a fabulous

first day of Spring being

‘Geographers’ at the Royal

Botanic Gardens.

Stage 1 explored the

beautiful gardens and took

in the breathtaking views

of Sydney. Each class had

a ‘Connection and Country’

lesson by the Staff at the

Royal Botanical Gardens.

The students learnt all

about important plants that

the Aboriginal people used

for food, drinks, tools and

medicine.

We learnt how to take care of

nature and how the land was

used by the Aboriginal People.

(1P)

Year 5 leadership day

Students in year five were given the amazing opportunity to participate in activities lead by an organisation that teaches children about leadership and what it means to be leader. As we are going into year 6 next Year this was very important to us. One of the main messages that Matt, the presenter of the day portrayed to us was that you don't need a badge or a position to be a leader and that everyone can show leadership. He discussed the elements of being a leader. One of which included the phrase always lead with HEART. HEART was an acronym that we used throughout the day. H stood for helpful. A good leader is helpful towards others. E energetic. All leaders must show positive energy and keep a positive attitude towards daily life scenarios. A. This letter had two meanings. Aware leaders must always be aware of the skills and the things they are good at. Leaders must be active. This means that nothing will happen unless you take action and actually do something about it. R stood for resilience as you must be able to dust yourself off and if something doesn't go right it's not the end of the world. Lastly, T. Team-player. As leaders we must be a team-player and be able to work collaboratively and efficiently in a group of people that may not always be our friends. We participated in a lot of hands on activities including working with other people to complete a set of tasks. We found out that different people have different skills and abilities and the advantage of being with these people concluded in the best results as everyone could play to their strengths that they know they have. Also we were split into large groups and took part in this fun activity. It tested our resilience after getting the answer wrong continuously, our patience and our ability to trust ourselves and work in a team with other people with different perspectives and opinions. Everyone had a great time. This experience has inspired me to be a better leader next year. So ylead y, not lead?

yLead workshop - year 5

On the 31st Of August 2016, Year 5 (5E, 5D and 5C) participated in a workshop inspiring them to be better leaders. They learnt to lead with H.E.A.R.T which shows how a real leader leads. They also learnt that being a leader doesn't mean you need to have a fancy badge or fancy position but instead do the right thing so others follow in your foot steps. The course was called yLead and was run by a man named Matt. He joined the yLead team when he was 19 and now at 30 is the CEO. Matt was also invited to join the Golden Key due to his charity work for yLead with his friend Dan who is also the founder of ‘Thankyou’. ‘Thankyou’ started off as a water company to help support villages in poverty by donating the money from the profit of the Thankyou brand. All the activities throughout the day required the students to work in a team. There were several different activities. One of the best activities was where year 5 were split into thirds and had to navigate their way through a grid blindly. All groups had to work their way through the grid using strategy and teamwork. Stage 3 Geography Fieldwork Excursion On Tuesday 30th August and 6th September, Stage 3 students visited Lyne Park for a Geography Fieldwork Excursion. Students surveyed the premises to explore the characteristics and features of the site and how people interact and use the park. This excursion allowed for students to apply geographical skills and make logical conclusions as to how and why this location has changed over time. Students thoroughly enjoyed the learning-outside the classroom and hands-on experience and took away valuable historical, cultural and social information about Lyne Park. Thank you to all the students who were on their best behaviour throughout the excursion and our Stage 3 team for their organisation and assistance. Illustrations by Luca Mercurio, 5E.
