President’s Messageby Greg LushEmotional deliberation ThankstotheeffortsofyourBoard,andespeciallyMonica,wehavehadtheopportunity to listen to some fantastic speakersin2014.Abigthankyoutoallofourpastandfutureguestspeakers.DuringourAugustmeetingwehadtheprivilegetohearfromPaulKramer,along time sponsor of the club with his familybusinessAutoKennel(http://www.autokennel.com/).Paul,youhaveinspiredthiscolumn,Emotionaldeliberation. AssomeofyouknowbyattendingAnnieand my recent open house and the others willdiscoverifyouattendtheheartsandgaragestour(SEP13)wejustpurchasedanew(older)home.AnnieandIwerelookingforyears,bothofushavingapretty good idea in our heads on the housethatwouldmotivateustomakeamove.However,onmanyoccasionsallofthepieceswerethere,butitjustdidn’tfeelright.Then,thedayafterthe
AutoXawardsceremony,withbothofushavingatouchoftheSaturdaynightflu,wedecidedtogoaroundtoopenhouses.WithinminutesAnniesaid,thisisournewhome,indeedaperfectexampleofemotionaldeliberation. IfwewereaToyotaPriusclubthisnotewouldlikelybeatoughfit.However,Icantellyousometimes,whenIreturntomycar,Isay“boyIlovethatcarandhowitlooks.”Admitit,youaregoingdown the road and pass a building made ofmirrors,sureyouaretakingapeakofyourselfinyourbeautifulcar.Thisispureunadulteratedemotion.Porschesarenotonlyform,theyarefunctionaswell. Approx.threetofouryearsago,Ibeganmysearchforadedicatedtrackcar.InmymindIcouldseethecarIwanted;however,howtoweedthroughallofthechoicesandmakeaninformeddecision.This is the time when you really need folks around you that you trust and who’s interests are to place you in a car that packs as many emotional connections as
possible.We,asaclub,areveryfortunatetohaveafantasticpartner/sponsorwith Ed McRae and Walter’s Porsche in Riversidefornewandusedcars.ForcarsabitolderandsomeadditionalvarietywehavePaulwithAutoKennelinCostaMesa.FormeIturnedtomyAutoXbuddies,andwegatheredaroundandagreedonthefinalcaroutofashortlist.Youcanseefromtheimageabovethatanemotional connection with this car was easytofind.

That Ribbon of HighwayOurAutocrossgroupisrunningoutofroad,sadtosay.IhavewrittenaboutthisbeforebutourvenueatElToroisindeedbeingchangedatlonglast.Imustsay,althoughI’venotnearlyhadthetimethereIwouldhaveliked,thatwehavebeenextraordinarilyluckytohavehadtheuseofthissiteforsolong.Butthereitgoes;sonowthesearchisonfornewautocrosslocations.Doyouknowofone?Orifyoueventhinkyoumayknowofone,pleasesendourCo-AutocrossChairsCraigAdamsorDonChapmananoteaboutit.
HavingbeenamemberforsometimeIcanrecallmanydifferentdrivinglocationsthattheclubhasusedovertime.
Somebetterthanothersofcourse.ButElToroishardtobeatandwilldefinitelybehardtoreplace.
Mr. SpeakerInourlatestnationalmagazine,Panorama,JohnMortonisinterviewedusing the quick question and answer format.WewereluckyenoughtohaveMr.Mortonasthefeaturedspeakeratour50thanniversaryparty.Hewasveryentertaining,andinterestingaswell.Thequickreviewformatdoesn’tdohiswitjusticebutit’swortharead.
Doing Just FinePorschesalesintheUSAandtheworldfor that matter are doing quite well this year.TheMacanissellingandpunchingnew holes in old records for total numberofvehiclessoldbyPorsche.Itis,tome,tellingthatthe4-cylinderMacangoesonsaleinChinafirst.WewillseeitintheUSA,butnotforanotheryearortwo.

It was the 59th Porsche ParadeHeld this year in the city of MontereyCommittees were ready, volunteers set to goThis was to be the largest ever, a really big show.They traveled from near and so many from afarIn their colorful and neatly spiffed prepared car.Parade was planned for a week and a day,What friends would they see, what new friendships made.Competitions in Concours, Autocross and Time-Distance ralliesEach with their banquets, to follow with prizes and tallies.There was an art show and quizzes with technical whizzesMy head was spinning with all this calendar business.Fun tours like the Gimmick Rally was not a race, but aChance to search for clues all over the place.Tours were offered and sights to see;A 17-mile drive of Pebble Beach’s coastal wonder orBig Sur with twists, turns, ocean views and scenery to ponderIf you chose to visit Canepa to view special cars and have lunchYou were not disappointed judging from glowing comments from this bunch.A wine bus was loaded with riders, sorry no one is a driver hereA trip for those who wanted knowledge and tastes of wine not beer.Fun for all and you got to chooseThinking of it, you had nothing to lose.The Parade of Porsches was a highlight for sureWith the Laguna Seca Racetrack as the lureWith 600 plus cars staged by model and yearThe photo was taken… now time to get into gearTwo laps around the track, Whee!There was nothing to fear.The end is near, the last night is finally here.Goodbye to Monterey, see you in Indiana next year.

TheOrangeCoastRegionwaswellrepresented with 101 folks trekking north tobepartoftheevent.Whetheritwastheirfirstparadeortheywereaveteranofmany,itwasstillanewplaceandexperience.Wehad53entries,andover100membersattending.Thankstoallforrepresentingourregion.
TherearemanytraditionsataParade;TheWelcomePartyisthekick-offdinnerwhereeveryonegathersthenightbeforeeventsstart.Aheartymealisalwayspreparedandit’sthefirstchanceforpeopletostarttomeetandconnect.
The Victory Banquet is held on the last eveningandisthefinalevent.Thisisthelastchancetogather.Closingspeechesaregiven,ticketdrawingsstartwithanavalancheofneverendingandverysoughtafterprizestobegivenout.Theverylastticketdrawnisforthecoveted“TriptoGermany”.AfewOCRmembershavebeenluckyenoughtohavehadtheirticketdrawnatapastParade.Weallhopeitwillbeoursnexttime.
The Concours Banquet starts off with a numberofspeechesgivenbytoplevelGermanrepresentativesfromPorscheandwithPeterPorscheasthe“fatherly”draw.PeterPorsche’sconversationalbanteringwithMarkSheviz,theMasterofCeremonies,broughtouthisplayfulside.
Competition is always a challenge in everyeventandthebaralwaysseemstoberaised.WehadmanyeventsinwhichOCRmembersparticipated.Noteveryonewasatrophywinnerbutdefinitelyawinnerintheireffort.Inadditiontoclasstrophies,Rose&HerbWysard’s1952Glocker/PorscheRoadster
was awarded the People’s ChoiceTrophy.RestorationGroupAwardwinnersintheWeissach class were Debbie Drummondforher1958Speedster and Brad Newell forhis1957356.IntheZuffenhousen class Thomas Drummondwonforhis1965912PrototypeandBobWeberforhis1997934.5.
WehadfivememberswhoenteredAutocross:StevenHens,GregNoss,
TomRidings,LisaTaylor,andMarkTrewartha.LisaTaylorwon1st.placeintheP12Lclasswithher2014911TurboS and Mark won 2nd place in the S10M classwithhis2010911GT3.
Unfortunatelynoneofoursixentriesinthe Time/Distance/Speed Rally came homewithtrophies,buttheyweregoodcompetitors.TheywereDouglasandPamelaCarrie,VincentandAnneMarieDePalma,BrettDonaldsonandImanSoliman,DennisHowey,MichaelandBonne LeLesch and Greg NossandAlanSandoval.
The same was for the sixentriesfromOCRintheGimmickRally...everyoneenjoyedagreatdrive,butagonizedthrough the somewhat difficultquestions.Thecoastal part of the rally was especially fun as we wanderedthe17-miledrivethroughPebbleBeach.AnotherOCRcompetitorwho came home with a
trophywasDennyAsburyforhis2ndPlaceintheT-shirtdesigncontest...sorryDenny,wethinkyoushouldhavewon1stplace!
TheweekwasfullofplannedactivitiestokeepyouandyourPorscheonthemove.Therewerefivebanquetswheresomegreatdoorprizeswereawarded.BonnieLelesh won a tub of goodies at the Rally Banquet and Gloria Moore won a Bose headsetattheAutocrossdinner.
Inadditiontothebig3events:Autocross,ConcoursandtheTDSRally,eachdayhadchoicesoftourstoHearstCastle,down to Ragged Point on Highway 1 forlunch,uptoCanepaMotorsportsCarMuseumintheSantaCruzmountains,andmore.Therewasalsoabustouroflocalwineries.
TheGoodieStoretemptedeveryonetobring something home with the Monterey Paradelogoonit,whiletheArtExhibitshowed how talented many of the Porsche communityare.TheHospitalityareaprovidedanopportunityforcamaraderieandsomefunbeerandwinetasting.Nextyear’sParadewillbeInFrenchLick,IndianaandcouldbeagoodreasontotakearoadtripinyourPorsche.

Q: My fuel level was just above the “R” and the low level light was not on, but my Porsche sputtered a couple of times and then in a few minutes quit running. After the car was towed to a gas station the gas gauge pointed
was(then) pointing below the “R” and the small red light was ON.Isn’tthewarninglightsupposedtocomeon early enough to warn you of running outofgas?Iwouldliketotrytofixit.Itwouldbeniceifitdidthat but it does not and thisisaverycommonfuellevel/warningsender failure in all Porsches!Upuntilthe1990sFuelLevelwastransmittedbyafloat,movingagainsttwosignalwires,asitmoveddown–(orup).Whenyoufilledupyourgastank,thefloat,floatedallthewayupto the top and the two metal slides on each sideofthefloatmovedagainst two sensing wires that send a reading to the fuel gauge(greenwire)thatshowed“4/4”(full).
Thismovementupanddownvariestheresistancesignaltothegauge.Asyouusefuelthefloatmovesdownandthefloat’sslidecontactsmovedownanditthen changes the amount of resistance it signalstothegauge.Thelowlevellightcomesonwhenthefloatreachesthebottomofit’sfull
downwardmovement.Theseparatecontact then makes a connection (black wire)togivethelowlevelwarninglightit’sgroundsignal.Asthesemechanicalfloattransmittersage the wires drag more against the slidingcontactsandthefloathangsup….Youknowtherest.IhavetakenFuelLevelTransmittersapart repeatedly and tried to repair them butIhadrepeatproblemsandjustcouldnot trust them!
Iboughtanewfueltransmitterand it immediately worked so muchbetter.Ifyouaregoingtotryarepairyourfueltransmitter,Iwouldrecommendthatyouatleastcarryafull,1gallon(minimum)safetygascaninyour911untilyouregainconfidencewithyourfuelgauge.
Porsche sales are skyrocketingandJ.D.Powerssurveygavethe Porsche brand it’s highest markstwoyearsinarow.
