No, I am not talking about the color of the month for the Cone Zone, nor am I talking about the beautiful Porsche above, I am talking about elections. I am so tired of talking, hearing about and thinking about the upcoming presidential elections, but I am still going to use it as a platform to talk about a local election that is of importance to PCA-OCR members. No, they will not have TV coverage, or be mentioned in heated posts and discussions on Facebook, nor will there be demonstrations held, or many promises or delegates. I am talking about the upcoming PCA-OCR Board elections.

There are seven members of the OCR Board. The President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Membership Chairman and two Members at Large. This year, we will be voting for the two Members at Large and the Secretary

positions. The other board positions will be up next year. We all have a say who is elected to these positions. Unlike in the National Election, where many say they have to “vote for the lesser of two evils”, we get to vote for the person who will best represent the Club and make decisions which are sound and in the best interest of the membership. As a board member, I can say that the board members put in at least some spare time each month, but not necessarily an unreasonable amount of time. It also provides a great deal of self satisfaction. We decide what should be done, and matters which are important to all of you so as to keep our Region as active and healthy as possible.

Are you interested in seeing the Club continue to prosper, have as much fun as we have in the past and come up with new ideas? We are looking for good candidates to run for these

positions. If you would like to join this team, or know of someone that would be great on the board, please let us know.

The qualifications are few, just be a member or associate member in good standing, be available to attend Board meetings (which are held immediately after the Breakfast Club meeting each month and last approximately an hour). By the way, anyone is able to attend the board meeting, and we invite you to come in and see what we do.

Who we elect to these positions are important to your enjoyment of the Club. Let’s get some good candidates and keep the Club as one of the best in the PCA. Should you have any questions, you can contact any of the Board members which are listed on Page 5 of the Pando each month.

BE A PART OF THE TEAM.

LETTERFrom the EditorStory and Photo by Garey Cooper

Within and without the gleaming steel towers stand out. High above the freeway below, mirrored windows without, do not show; activity within, to now begin the OCR plan by the staff, just how much fun can you have?

On The Road AgainBy the time you read this I will have been to the annual Porsche Club of America Parade. This year, the event is being held in Jay Peak, Vermont. This will only be the second one I’ve been privileged to attend. So, as mentioned last month, I will let you all know about the experience.

However, when one travels with Mrs. Cooper, there will always be golf involved. Golf is a four-letter word to substitute for those other four letter words that are proscribed for family publications. In my own case, it might be more described as; “hit, hunt, find (maybe) and repeat”. But the additions of two sets of clubs, plus Mrs. Cooper’s suitcase, aka “the widow maker”, means that I am consigned to much manual labor over the next month. Not

to worry, I have laid in a fresh supply of Advil, and am feverishly working out to build my back muscles up enough to be indentured for the duration of the trip.

How Do You Like That?In addition to the monthly Breakfast Club and other gourmet and car events that are regular features of the club, by this time of the year we will have had no fewer than six driving events. One of which was at Chuckwalla Raceway and the others have been at El Toro, here in our own Irvine. That is outstanding and our Autocross Dudes and Dudette’s deserve a lot of credit for this organization and effort. Actually, I guess you could make that seven if you include the award/prize party held at our sponsor Walter’s Porsche earlier this year. So, if you like to drive, as opposed to eat, you can really do so with the Orange Coast Region.

Many thanks to Co-Chairs, Chris Barrington and Eric Budai, as assisted by Bob Scheussler, and Chuck Bartolon. A great group of people who bring a lot of spirit and driving expertise to our little old region. Even if you don’t want to drive, it is permissible to drop by one of our events, sign the waiver and be a “looky loo”, you will be welcome.

You (Could) Look Mahvelous DahlingSpeaking of sartorial splendor, (even though we weren’t) I would mention

our “Goodie Store” and her supreme royalness in charge, Monica Asbury. How “Goody” got to be “Goodie” is lost in the mists of time, I have checked and going way, way back that is how we have spelled it. But there are goodies there for you to wear and represent your loyalty to Porsche and the Orange Coast Region. The collection is hand curated by Mdm Asbury, with some assistance in the graphics design department by Denny Asbury. So you know it is way cool, even your kids will envy you….or maybe not.

Say “Thank You”, The Magic Words, SponsorshipHow many times did your Mum or Dad tell you to say, “Please and Thanks”? Mine did many times and I was told that these were the “magic” words to unlock all sorts of goodness. Perhaps even a chocolate chip cookie or two, when properly employed. I still use them, and, you know, that old advice still holds true, doors do seem to open.

We are indeed fortunate to have many dedicated and supportive sponsors. There are too many to list individually, so I will just say go to http://www.pcaocr.com/?page=12. On this page, there is a list of our heroes and there is usually contact information associated with the listing. I count 40 plus, and they range from Porsche Dealers, such as Walter’s and Circle, to places

Cooper’s Classy Car CareConcours Prep SeminarStory and Photos by Tom GraySunday, May 22nd. Just four weeks to go before the OCR Concours. A perfect day to attend the Cooper’s Classy Car Care pre-Concours detailing session.

About 20 club members gathered at Cooper & Nicole Boggs’ home. After a continental breakfast, Cooper started off by asking the attendees their purpose in being there. The group included experienced Concours participants, others intending to compete for the first time and some who merely wanted to increase their detailing skills. Cooper emphasized that Concours preparation was all about “attention to detail”.Next came a brief discussion about Cooper gives tips using member’s car

judging, specifics about the score sheets, and procedures used by the judging team. Emphasis was on the Wash and Shine class with some touch points on Street class. Only the Exterior and Interior are judged in W&S.

Cooper emphasized that Concours is about “creating the illusion of perfection”. Inasmuch as actual perfection is impossible to attain, the competitor tries to come as close as possible.

He discussed techniques to mask imperfections to make an area appear flawless. He also offered insight into how judges look at specific areas of the car and how the entrant should prepare those areas for judging.

After his initial remarks, Cooper took the group to some of the participants’cars to illustrate specific techniques to improve the appearance for judging. He then wound up with a detailed discussion about products and methods, and their use in preparing for Concours.

OCR’s Head Judge Joe Nedza offered helpful insight into preparation and what to expect from the judging team. Concours chair Norm Follis encouraged all who were present to attend and participate.

The day wound up with a delicious lunch prepared by former OCR President, Nicole Boggs. Nicole offered from scratch, homemade beef and vegetarian chili, hot dogs, coleslaw, corn bread and cookies. It was a fine ending to a very beneficial seminar.

Yes, the title is a bit excessive, but true. OK, let’s start at the start. Saturday morning, May 21st, 2016, we gathered at Krispy Kreme in Orange to register and get the tour route instructions (some of the simplest I have ever written: get on the 405, turn east on Sunset, turn right on Alpine Dr., and stop at Mr. Gold’s house).

Following registration, our group of 34 cars headed north on the 405 in Saturday morning traffic to the Gold’s Beverly Hills home. As we entered their property, via the long driveway alongside the house (past two Panameras and a newish 911), it was obvious this was going to be nice. His garage building occupies the full area of the rear of the property. Oh, did I mention, it is two cars deep and two stories tall (the garage is on the ground floor with a mini-kitchen tucked into one end and a comfortable lounge and bathroom on the balcony level)? WOW! On the brick patio in front

of the garage (facing the house), was his 1965 Porsche 911 Peking to Paris Rally Car, flanked by two immaculate 356s and one Porsche Tractor. Inside the garage were ten (I think) other immaculate 356s from his collection and one RS America. Adorning the walls is a fascinating collection of photos of his cars, his adventures and related Porsche memorabilia. This man takes his Porsche love affair seriously.

Once we had all arrived, we partook in the coffee and munchies the Gold’s provided, while Stanley Gold addressed us from the balcony. Notably, Stanley said he was not comfortable with this position because he associated it with a dictator’s balcony, but he did so to make sure everyone could hear and see him.

He opened his remarks with a brief bio-description of each of the cars in the garage. Each of his cars are fairly rare and most represent an innovative step

in the production history of the 356. As the ribbons and plaques on the wall attest, many of his cars are concours winners.

P2P, Peking to ParisThis international event has, arguably, become the gold standard of historic car rallys, as it honors the oldest such event, the 1907 P2P. Today, its routing varies from year to year, but basically, it covers 7,610 miles of paved roads, rural non-paved roads, dirt roads and no roads (Mongolia). Lodging accommodations along the way include 5 star hotels, no-star hotels, and the tent you brought. This is a very long (30+ days) and tough endurance adventure. Nonetheless, each year, it attracts a large field of participants: in 2013, 110 cars participated.

Stanley’s description of his team’s participation in the 2013 event was fascinating. He described the route, the

cars, the participants, the spectators, the challenges, the lessons learned, and the mistakes made on the route. He expressed his reactions and thoughts about the countries and cultures they passed through. His delightful sense of humor showed in his observations related to various incidents during the adventure. A classic example is his memory of the hole they drove into, which broke part of the front suspension. His co-driver, Brant Parsons, described the hole as 2 feet deep while Stanley described it, with a smile, as 4 ½ feet deep.

Following his presentation, he and Brant were available to discuss the P2P and the cars in his collection. Also, at

the north end of the balcony he had a looped-video set up of the 2013 P2P for those interested.

On behalf of those attending, I wish to extend a big thank you to Stanley and his wife, Ilene, for their hospitality. Also, thank you to Brant Parsons, Stanley’s very able co-driver/mechanic, for his time and ready technical explanations. And, last but not least, I personally want to thank Denise Greskoviak, Stanley’s secretary, for her assistance in making the arrangements for this tour.

For those of you who are interested and/or curious, go to Google and type in “Peking to Paris 2013” and it will

lead to several sites with videos of the event. Also, you can go to Stanley Gold’s site, www.shamrockracing.com, wherein he posts daily blogs of his adventures. Since the 2013 P2P, he has participated in the 2015 Road to Mandalay Rally (Singapore to Burma), and will depart for the 2016 Rally Of The Inca’s across South America later this year. And while the expense of these events will sideline most of us, we can watch the videos and read the blogs for free. All you have to do it is make the effort.

Thank you to all our members who attended because it is your participation that makes our club work.

Battle lines are being drawn! The Bench Racing Index* or BRI, and as some might call it the “Bragging Rights Index”, has been very closely contested the past four events. Things are serious. I have witnessed some dancing in the pits by the BRI winner of the last two events.

The fourth event of the 2016 Walter’s Porsche Championship Autocross Series took place on May 22nd. Walter’s Porsche of Riverside is our primary PCA-OCR Autocross Series Sponsor and one of the top Porsche Dealers in the Country. They are opening a new dealership building near their current location in Riverside very soon. I, and many others, are looking forward to visiting their new facility.

GMG is another one of our Series Support Sponsors, located in Santa Ana, and they provide Porsche service as well as prep for racetrack and Autocross. MOMO, who specializes in wheels and tuning, is our newest support sponsor for Autocross.

The May Event Sponsor was Autowerkes, the company I started in 1980. We have been a sponsor of PCA-OCR Autocross since 2007. We perform all service and maintenance including diagnosing all types of drive-

Ready To Start, CDI Greg Noss #500 at the front

ability and check engine light issues as well as upgrades to suspension, brakes etc. for PCA members.

Driving Autocross at the highest level is like qualifying at Indy. Well, not exactly. It is similar in that in order to be the best, one must drive at 10/10ths, on the edge of the speed-control envelope and be technically perfect for the complete run. Or, as perfect as is possible. It is the driver versus the clock and the coned course. No cars to pass. This is very similar to a qualifying run at Indy, just at a much slower speed. Autocross is very much an adrenalin rush for many and just plain fun for all.

Autocross is challenging to seasoned drivers as well as newbies. Picking out the line that will produce a quicker time through the elements of each course is sometimes very deceiving. For this event our Course Designer, Chuck Bartolon, used a sweeper with a decreasing radius. In order to get the fastest time possible, a driver had to get the car pointed towards the next turn prior to the exit of this sweeper. If this was not done just right, the driver would be forced to slow down to be able to complete the following track elements.

For the less experienced, their line might be getting close to perfect, their

speed might be closing in on the speed of the faster drivers in their class, but it is a game of inches on the line, degrees on where the car is pointed, and a few split seconds with the foot on the throttle or on the brake. The most common error is to “over-drive” approaching a corner . To over-drive is to brake too late, going too wide and possibly taking out a cone or two. By reducing speed into the corner you can have the car lined up to accelerate sooner into the straighter portions of the course.

Autocross always welcomes newbies. There have been a lot of new faces over the past year. The OCR Autocross welcome wagon includes Keith Gregorio as the liaison for newcomers. He will give an orientation on where, when and what to do on the morning of the event. Karen Guthorn, the Registrar, will get other people involved as needed to get your car classed and she will coordinate with the Chief Driving Instructor, Greg Noss. Greg will assign an instructor to get you up to speed and help you learn the finer points of autocross.

Back to the battle of the Autocross stars for the BRI. Once again Erik Hagendijk earned top honors in the BRI, beating out Kurt Russler, who had the fastest time of the day, by scant seconds. Erik has been #1 in the BRI

all four events of 2016. But the top ten of the BRI is an ever-shifting roster that supplies the fuel for friendly needling and bragging.

Thank you again to our 2016 Autocross Championship Series Sponsor Walter’s Porsche and our Support Sponsors GMG and MOMO.

Sergey ZherebnenkoAs I was writing this article I received word that one of our PCA members, fellow OCR Autocross driver, instructor and employee at GMG, Sergey Zherebnenko, was involved in a tragic accident on his way to work and passed away. I’m certain that I speak for all the Autocross Team in expressing our deepest sympathy. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife and family, as well to the GMG family. Sergey was a tremendously welcoming man, with a great sense of humor, a big heart and a willingness to be helpful. He was friendly to everyone he came in contact with. I know we will all miss him and that we cherish the time and friendship we shared with him. Details to follow on a rally in Sergey’s honor.

Christy Christian-MotterChristy Christian-Motter passed away on June 3rd, 2016, following a fairly routine angiogram/angioplasty (one small stint) Christy had an unbelievable smile, unflappable and strong spirit, an infectious giggle and laugh, and a knack for cheering up anyone she saw or met, even those she didn’t know. Christy recently returned to work as the front office representative for GMG Racing in Santa Ana where she was around the Porsches, other exotics and race cars she loved. She called it her “dream job”. Her parents, Dale and Sue Christian, are active PCA-OCR members and Christy was very involved as well. Christy made many friends in PCA-OCR, and she will be missed by all of the members who cherished her.

Saturday, May 14, 2016 - undaunted by the morning grey overcast skies, enthusiastic PCA-OCR members mingled over hot coffee, fresh Krispy Kreme donuts and friendly car talk at the Block at Orange in anticipation of a group drive to the world famous Petersen Automotive

PORSCHESTOPETERSEN

Museum located in the Mid-Wilshire area of Los Angeles, California. Our PCA-OCR group was looking forward to seeing the results of the 2015 $90 million dollar Museum’s exterior and interior renovation, plus the opportunity to visit the Petersen Vault and working garage,

showcasing a variety of vintage and current autos either in the process of being or already fully restored.

After Greg Lush confirmed receipt of signed waivers and provided great directions – we got into our Porsches and swiftly departed at 8:54 a.m.

Three lanes of drop dead beautiful colorful Porsches snaked their way up the 22, 405 and 10 freeways eliciting lots of appreciative onlooker smiles and thumbs up.

Arriving at 10am, some of the group disbursed among the various exhibit floors, while others caught the 90 minute guided basement vault and working garage tour (photos not allowed!). Our knowledgeable guide warmly greeted us, requesting we respectfully view the cars from the front and sides, but cautioned us not to walk or get to close to either the front or sides of any vehicle citing a prior visitor’s coat zipper unknowingly scratching a car and costing the museum $37,000 to restore.

There were current and vintage racing cars, as well as Presidential and Celebrity vehicles including but not limited to the following cars either in the process of or fully restored:

Additionally, we saw rare accessories such as two Lalique “mascots”, often mistakenly referred to as hood ornaments.

When the Vault/Garage tour ended, many of us went to the 2nd floor, Charles Nearburg Family Gallery, featuring 70 years of international motor sports history and innovation. The display included a jaw dropping display of a 1980 Porsche 935 K3 Sachs, a 1969 917K Gulf Wyer, a 1980 Porsche 936/80 Martini, and a 1986 Porsche 962 Rothmans.

Adjacent exhibits recognized Southern California as a locale where speed records were set, world class racing machines were designed and legends created. It continues to be a center of activity for motor sports and performance car enthusiasts who still derive inspiration from our southern Californian “car centric” lifestyle.

Our visit culminated with the must see gift shop showcasing numerous Porsche die cast cars, books and T-shirts; happily purchased by PCA-OCR members. Many thanks to all responsible for coordinating the event, as well as to our fellow PCA-OCR attendees, who made it a very memorable outing.

On a very hot and bright Friday afternoon, June 3rd, in Orland, California, at the beautiful “Orland Art Center”, which is located approximately 30 miles east of Chico, was featured Artist and OCR member, Denny Asbury’s collection; “Stars and Cars Glamour, Movie Star Style” collection.

Denny was unaware that an International Art Dealer, residing in San Francisco, Jerome Thommasen, had arrived mid-way through the reception to inspect and review the exhibit of larger than life 4’ x 4’ paintings. To the surprise and delight of Denny, finally, someone with some real art culture was going to bring his glamour queens of Hollywood’s Golden Age and equally glamorous racing cars the attention they deserved. He would rise to the heights of Andy Warhol’s critically acclaimed art. His hard work was about to pay off, big time.

But wait, who was this International Art Dealer? He was wearing a pageboy hat, sunglasses, bow tie, suspenders, blue dress shirt, and had a scrunched-up face, with a deep voice and just a twang of an accent? None other than OCR’s Steve Eguina! Steve came with his

own expression of art, one of disguise! (Yes, he had Denny completely fooled for several minutes.)

The gallery is about 5 miles from Thunderhill Raceway. Denny’s F1 Series of paintings will be moved to Thunderhill Raceway after June 25th

for David Vodden, Raceway President, to display at the track.

A big laugh was had by all. The charade and the show was a huge success!

’S RamblingsSounds of Silence... and not Simon & Garfunkle’sElectro driven “vehicles”, “hybrids”, and other whiz-bang-gizmo cars seem to be the accepted new sound to many these days. Unless you get run over by one because you didn’t hear it. There is a lot of commentary about fake or enhanced sound options on our ultra expensive, genuine, high performance, sports cars and that got me to wondering,

Sound excites humans as witnessed by the popularity of guns, steam engines, rock bands, airplanes, N.H.R.A. drag strips, and almost any sports racing since the late 1800s. People flock to the racetrack to see and HEAR good sounds such as Formula-1, I.M.S.A., INDY CARS, NASCAR and those sounds are captivating to many.

Loud exhaust exhibits the power and superiority of one’s machine over the other cars-or so we thought when we were kids. Poking a hole in Mom’s Chevy muffler and temporarily removing the air filter so the huge four barrel carburetor could make those enhanced sounds made driving quite impressive, mostly to ourselves. But today, loud noise is not well received, and in the future it will not be tolerated to make one’s passing an annoyance to everyone else. Are ‘Harley’ Riders paying attention?

I love the sound of precision machinery. The sounds from quite a few odd things in my life influenced this.

First, was the Southern Pacific’s Del Monte Express Steam locomotive, which left Monterey for San Francisco every weekday morning and arrived back home to Monterey in the evening. My grandfather would walk me up to the “hissssing” steam engine to inspect the white hot fire which roared and emitted blinding white light from the small opening in the engine’s fire box. The hissing and groaning sounds inside the tall black steam engine with its the occasional “Huff-Puff” from the smoke stack was spell binding. Starting off from a dead stop, I am still amazed at how quickly a heavy steam train can pull away, “Chug-Chug-chugging” and off and away and on out of sight with

its ringing bell and occasional steam whistle. I loved that sound and the sight as well. Wonderful noises.

Airplanes made even more wonderful and mysterious sounds. I loved the old “Beechcraft 18” twin engine propeller plane, based at Monterey’s Naval Air Facility, as they took off with an ear splitting racket that mellowed out into a sweet melody as it climbed up to altitude. Then came a huge formation of US Navy F4-U Corsair fighters flying out of San Francisco’s N.A.S. Alameda, to aircraft carriers going over to Korea. That was very impressive to say the least.

Later, I got to be a real ‘Air Force brat’ and had a small run of my father’s Air Force Base. Thus, I spent my summer days watching F86A Saber Jets taking off, landing, doing run ups, and flying all over the Eastern Tennessee Air Defense Zone.

Some people think jet engines have no soul but those who work on, or in, or just love getting close to them, do. We hear its unique sounds and that powerful thunder out back. Today, I know exactly why and how all that works, professionally –but as a child, it was magical mystery – and today it still holds this mystery to a degree.

My dad loved all machine and electrical things. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps specialist and loved his 25 years in ‘Air Force’ aviation. However, his cars gave him a freedom to experiment with machinery and to create his own custom car art form that was free of the restriction aviation mandated.

My brother, John, and I, helped our dad construct his cars and got our start on machinery with him. Our dad’s special cars all ran super efficiently, and all had a nice mechanical sound to them. It was not just a loud muffler-we were taught that anyone can buy loudness, but noise alone does not make a ‘real machine.’

My brother and I liked V-8 engine cars in high school, but after seeing and hearing real machines like the 250 Ferrari V-12, something snapped the booming V-8 ideal of power and performance. There was something about those European machines that really grabbed our attention. Take, for instance, Steve McQueen’s movie LeMans. Nothing was faked for the sounds of the 12 cylinder Ferrari 512’s V-12 engine, the French Matra-team’s V-12, and of course Porsche’s air-cooled Flat 12 boxer engine! Those sounds were real and 100% pure machine wizardry.

My first appreciation of Porsche sound was a 1966 912. It was no VW in disguise, it was a genuine engineered machine and efficient. At least, I reasoned so at the time as driving around the Monterey Bay area was no place for a high performance small block Fuel Injected Corvette Sting Ray. I reasoned a 912 would be perfect for Monterey’s roads.

However, I was still living down in “LA” (Orange County) and one of my friends said: “You outt’a try a 911. It even sounds like a formula one car!” Well, THAT I did not believe, but I wondered? He was a local Laguna Seca formula racer, so he should know,.. But how could a funny little German Volkswagen kind of car sound like that?

After a good demonstration drive with the dealer’s German driver who had driven his 911 in Germany, I had no doubts at all. I recalled later, in Germany, seeing 2.0 liter 911S’s with their throttle pedal worn down like our brake pedals are here! The Germans drove the daylights outt’a their 911’s. They ran them hard, and their 911’s did NOT break! That fact really got my attention.

The 911 we drove was a 1966 with those Solex carburetors which did not have much of an air filter to quiet the intake’s ear splitting sounds. But WHAT GLORIOUS sounds the 911 on cam and the high rpms made! And the 911 engine seemed to love the hard use. I remember looking over the engine and asking, “What does this 911 have for a cold start system -a choke?” The broken English-German snap reply was: “Porsche doesn’t need any ‘choke’, you just drive it. Why add weight, Porsche doesn’t do that!” I loved that attitude! Nothing but performance and done with precision. The 911 engine not only looked and sounded good, it was great! I was hooked… and come to think of it, I still am. The sounds a 911 made were genuine sounds of precision machinery

in harmony with itself. It is, to me, ‘motor head,’ music.

One of my fondest memories was as a course worker at Riverside one late afternoon. Delays held up final timed runs on the long course till almost sunset, at which time we had to close the track. Most course workers had to get home for Monday morning and volunteers were called for, so as to finish the last few runs. I volunteered.

I was out on turn 8, as far from everyone as you could get but the occasional Porsche coming by was interesting because the lifting of the right front wheel exiting turn 8 is always amusing. Anyway a few exceptional nice running 911S’s and 2.8 RSRs did last runs and the sounds, those perfectly tuned flat six 911s made were so clear and crisp resounding through the late afternoon air. This was really music to my ears. I could hear those engines all the way down past turn 9.

I have a fond memory of working Riverside’s turn 8 on a late Sunday’s time trial afternoon:

Most everybody has gone but a few re-time runs are finishing up the weekend, for some reason. Gentle wind, sun still warm on my face, no clatter on the headphone’s land line, just gentle breeze echoing through the head set. Then a tired voice says, “last run.” And it is a 911, a 911 with a passion! It finally is seen atop turn 6 coming down to 7 and up to us, at 8.

As it comes by I see “Cookie Cutter” megaphone exhausts: ‘an RSR type’, now exiting our turn 8 with its right front wheel off the surface -going for a quick timed lap. You hear the deep growl of a Porsche ‘Mezger 6’ as it pulls the 911 quickly past and away,… the sound makes my head shake! Its ‘voice’ is instantly singing way UP High as the revs climb up (8,2oo) and the 911 then starts to become smaller

as it rapidly pulls away, getting smaller as it heads down the long- long straight. The RSR’s singing exhaust still ringing loudly in my ears. It goes downward towards and under the BOSCH Bridge, ....then into 4th it recedes further,... down to the ‘kink.’The r.p.m.’s climb through 5th gear now, and on through turn 9 -the high banked ‘sweeper’ and out of sight, and sound,……..almost.

Then I notice the quiet again,... the late afternoon wind is back. Now, everything gets quiet,… for good -LfR

All of this leaves an impression of when my dad taught me about how a good machine leaves its own particular sound. That late Riverside afternoon is as fresh a memory as yesterday and that actually was back many years ago.

My dad got me to think outside of the box on almost everything and it took me a lifetime to realize he was mostly correct, I am forever thankful for his teaching –which I did not appreciate much at the time.

So today, with the sounds of machinery music in my head and heart, I thank my dad and give him credit for teaching me to seek the genuineness for the real things in life and not to settle for the show and hype or simply “loud noise.” This is just one of the things Father’s do for their kids. With that, I would like to wish a HAPPY FATHERS Day to all.

This year is the 100th anniversary of the Indianapolis 500. There have, of course, been many famous cars and drivers in the race. We tend to think of this as a strictly American affair, but from an early stage there has been European involvement. Peugeots were early masters of Indianapolis, winning there in 1913 with driver Jules Goux. This was only 3 years after Ray Harroun won the inaugural Indianapolis “500” mile event. Another significance to the Peugeot was its’ advanced engine design with four valves per cylinder and double overhead camshafts. As events will show, Americans would learn several times from European technology.

Carrying on the cross oceanic ties into the 1940’s, A Maserati won in

1939 and 1940, both times driven by iconic American driver, Wilbur Shaw.In the late 1950’s there was a “Race of Two Worlds” held at Monza, Italy, on the old configuration of the track, complete with the steeply banked sweeping curves. In both years in which it was held this race was won by American drivers in American cars. 1957, Jimmy Bryan, and 1958, Jim Rathman. So, from a certain point of view the Europeans were well aware of American style racing from an early era in the history of race cars.

For a time in the 1950’s, Indianapolis was a points counting FIA event, points counting towards the FIA world championship. World Champion Giuseppe Farina attempted qualification at

Indianapolis in a Ferrari engined Kurtis Kraft, perhaps the earliest blend of European and American racing technologies. However, he was unable to qualify due to being rained out with several other competitors that year.

The 1960’s saw a return to Indianapolis of international drivers and cars. In 1961, Jack Brabham brought his rear engined Cooper of only 2.5 liters to race against the big booming Offenhauser powered roadsters, and not only qualified very well, in 17th but finished well in 9th place. Ultimately, in that decade winners like Jim Clark and Graham Hill and their cars came from Europe, leading to the change to rear engine designs among other technical innovations.

Indianapolis, as an important race, and America, as an important market, has therefore been a driving force for European interest in our series and the event for a very long time.

In the 1980’s, Ferrari built a car for Indy but never ran it at the race itself. In the fall of 1987, Porsche brought to the California race track Laguna Seca an open wheel single-seater with Indianapolis as the target. At the time, U.S. open wheel racing had well-known stars like Mario Andretti, the Unsers, Bobby Rahal, and Emerson Fittipaldi.

A motivating force behind Porsche’s Project 2708 was Al Holbert Jr., head of Porsche Motorsports North America. The son of Bob Holbert, a

famous Porsche driver in the 60’s, he won the 24-Hours of Le Mans three times driving first a 956 in 1983, and then twice in 962 Porsche race cars in 1986 and 1987.

The initial driver for Project 2708 was Al Unser, Sr. The car had a new Hans Mezger designed 2.6 liter DOHC single-turbo V-8 and a Porsche designed chassis. Mezger was behind the racing 904, 906, 908, 910, and 917 and the TAG-Porsche F1 cars 1984-1986. But this car turned out to be a stone. In the race at Laguna it did seven laps to finish last.

Sadly, Holbert was killed in a private plane crash in 1988 that damaged the program as it soldiered on till 1990. In the hands of Teo Fabi, albeit

this time the chassis was provided by March while the motive power was still Porsche. There was only one win, Mid-Ohio in 1989. However the Vee design of the Indianapolis motor was used for Formula 1 as the “Technique De Avant Garde” or “TAG” motor which won world championships in MacClaren and Williams chassis in the later 1980’s. Although these were in V6 configuration Porsche had left the “flat six” and “flat 4” engine designation far behind and now had solid credentials as an extraordinary engine designer and builder.

And, of course, as we now know that V8 concept has reappeared in the Porsche line up in various chassis that have heralded the firms success. These are the Cayenne, Panamera, as well as going back to the 928!

Letter from the Editor Continued From Page 7to get your taxes (David Piper) done or your home financed (Fairway Mortgage Capital).

You can generally get a “PCA” discount from the automotive folks listed among our sponsors. The discount is about 10% at most dealerships as I recall. I bet the discount perks amount to more than enough to pay for a year’s dues. This is particularly true when you have or had a GT3 as I did that eats front fender curtains. I am sure that the current owner, Steve Eguina, will discover this all too soon!

However, even the non-automotive side has its benefits, as you can discuss cornering technique with David Piper, for instance, as he makes sure that the government takes no more than its “fair share” of your yearly income. Just how fair that share should be, I will leave up to you.

What’s left over can be invested with advice from Bart Zandbergen CFP, or Scott Huddleston of Newcastle Financial Advisors. Or, you could just spend it on a new house selected with the help of Catherine Robinson in Real Estate or Pamela Horton with Surterre Properties. Gee, if you have that much left over to buy a house... Mine usually ends up with the statement, “please pay”. But even if you get a little bit back, you can buy that Porsche Part or key fob from Pelican or Einmalig!

Land of the LostSpeaking of key fobs, it seems that the second key to BESS, our “Big Expensive Sedan” Panamera, has gone to where coat hangers, second socks, and cheetos do. That is somewhere you can’t find them, although my advice is to look under the sofa cushions for the cheetos. Now, in the good old days one could go to the lock smith located outside any major or minor shopping mall and have a new key cut, for say $2.00. In the now good old days, the key is not only

a super mini computer by itself; it is eternally and forever bonded to your own automobile through the magic of modern computer science and marketing.

All of this technology costs and in the case of the Panamera it’s about the cost of a new FIAT. So, one could just buy the FIAT, park it in the garage and when you lose the key(s) drive it until the key(s) are found or hades freezes, whichever comes first. Okay, I know this isn’t really practical, but Mrs. Cooper and I now live in dread of the possibility of losing the only key left, whereupon we will be stranded with a perfectly immobile 2 1/2 ton four door sedan. Now I can barely heft the “widow maker,” so pushing BESS just ain’t gonna happen. Be afraid, be very afraid.

So, sometime in the future I will need to stop by the ATM to withdraw enough cash for some kids college education and go to the dealer for a new key. Which will then be programmed indelibly with BESS until it too is lost. Oh, and I didn’t lose the key! Or at least I don’t think I did?
