2. What is PAYU? Provides affordable access to the internet and computing services to the masses in East Africa. Customizable and easily deployable pay-as-you-use computing platform. Customer Stories (More customer stories can be found in the additional slides)Customers without computers These users will use the Angaza PC via either the subscription or voucher system. They can get their own computers or use computers time sold by the PAYU resellers. Sites with such users: Mbezi Beach (Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania) The Pain: A Tanzanian family of 4 with one working parent and a household income of $200 per month. Most members have limited knowledge of computer use. Need an affordable way of communicating and sharing information with relatives both inside and outside the country. The Answer:Buy a $50 Angaza PC, which comes bundled with a pay-as-you-go internet connection. Call, email, chat, and share pictures for free with family and friends on the PAYU network, and do the same at an affordable rate with those outside the network. Customers with existing desktops / laptops at home These customers can get the PAYU Router and USB to gain access to the Internet and PAYU OS. Sites with such users: Option not yet offered. The Pain: A Kenyan middle-aged woman with an old Windows computer that does not respond. The Answer: Connect the PAYU router and USB to the same computer and enjoy a virus-free, always up-to-date, worry-free computer7 8. Competitors Microsoft Flexgo provides PCs to low-income families in Brazil using this model we use open source and hence are more affordable.Novatium provides similar services in India but their network is wiredZonbu, a company in the US that makes a Cloud OS.Selcom Wireless in Dar-es-Salaam is attempting mesh wireless deployments. 8 9. Team Adnaan Jiwaji Graduated in 2009 with a Master of Engineering degree in ElectricalEngineering and Computer Science from the Massachusetts Institute ofTechnology (MIT) in Cambridge, MA. Guy-Richard Kayombya Graduated in 2009 with a Bachelors of Science in Computer Science andEngineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Ammar Jiwaji Graduated in 2009 with a Bachelors of Science in Management Science with aconcentration in Finance, and a minor in Economics, from the MassachusettsInstitute of Technology (MIT). 11 12. Rwanda Pilot -Conducted a pilot in Rwanda in January in collaboration with the Office of the President and the Rwanda Information Technology Authority-Set up computers at a coffee shop and a high school-Gathered feedback from users-Tested the system in areas with regular power outages and poor internet connectivity 12 13. Tanzania Deployment - Partnered with SimbaNet A leading ISP in Tanzania- Marketed and sold PAYU services to the desired customer base.-Deployed a 20 PAYU computer set-up for a customer starting a new internet caf in suburbs.- Half of the computers were in one location, the rest wereoffered to residents surrounding the caf- Thus started a new paradigm of decentralized internetcafs. 13 14. Tanzania Deployment -Deployed PAYU-enabled WiFi network in dense urban area (Dar-es-Salaam city)- Attracted healthy amount of users.- Realized the threat of competition from local companies.-Gathered feedback and usage statistics.-Realized bottlenecks and ironed out kinks in software.PAYU wireless router installed on a pre-existing tower 14 15. Customer Stories Public PAYU Computers These are computers provided by PAYU resellers for use by the public via vouchers Sites with such users: Mbezi Beach (Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania), Bourbon Caf (Kigali, Rwanda), Kitumbini Street (Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania) The Pain: A young, entrepreneurial, technically inclined man from Uganda who sees the demand for internet in his place of residence or work, and wants to generate revenue by supplying internet access. The Answer: Apply for a loan via the PAYU microfinance fund. Set-up one or more public-access Angaza PCs in the area where he sees demand. Market his service and generate more than the minimum $15 per month, and pocket 70% of any revenues above that. WiFi customers These are customers with laptops who use the PAYU WiFi using vouchers. Sites with such users: Avenue de la Justice (Kigali, Rwanda), Mbezi Beach (Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania), Kitumbini Street (Dar-es- Salaam, Tanzania) The Pain: A professional manager who works in an area covered by the PAYU network, and wants to connect to the internet during his lunch break. The Answer: Send an SMS specifying the amount of usage time required to an advertised PAYU number, and receive a 10 digit code that can be used to access PAYU WiFi. The charge will be deducted from your mobile payment account.16 17. Customer Stories Schools We provide the Angaza PC to schools on either a subscription or voucher system. PAYU also works with the schools to provide a customized Educational package. Sites with such users: Lyce de Kigali (Kigali, Rwanda), Kibaha Secondary School (Kibaha, Tanzania) The Pain: Lyce De Kigali has a shortage of computers in their labs. The potential of interconnected computers for education is not being met. The Answer: Purchase Angaza PCs, and use the collaboration, blackboard, and teaching tools offered by the PAYU Education Package.17 18.
