PawPrints Magazine's HOMELESS COVER MODEL

They tell me it’s Adopt-A-Shelter Dog month, but I think it should be called Adopt-A-Princess month. As you can see from my cover photo, that’s

exactly what I am! My name is Luna and I’m looking for a loving family to call my very own.

I’m a 2-year-old Terrier mix who is extremely laid-back and easy-going. Not many dogs would be

happy wearing a tiara, pearls and tutu, but I didn’t mind a bit. In fact, I had a great time! You’ll find

that I’m a darling, awesome girl who has NO issues. I’m already spayed, vaccinated and on heartworm prevention. I’ll play with anyone (except cats, they get me a little too excited), but I adore other dogs

and I love people, especially kids. I behave beautifully at adoption fairs and am instant friends with everyone who approaches, from young to old.

I love giving and receiving hugs and am always happy to be by your side. This princess will be glad

to kiss anyone, even a frog! If you’d like to adopt me or learn more, please call Paw’s Place at

910-845-7297. I’d like to thank my friends at Paw’s Place for bringing me to the photo shoot and I’d like to thank photographer Dick Parrott for capturing my

royal beauty. Just think, the one who takes me home will have their very own personal princess!

Hi, my name is Madden! Not long ago I was running around a busy road all alone with no tags. A nice

lady picked me up and took

me straight to the doctor, and the doctor said

my leg was broken! So

now I’ve got a new name, a new foster home, and a silly new cast on my leg! The cast will come off by

October 1, and my leg will be better than ever. I am an 8-month-old girl, spayed, microchipped, heartworm

free, on heartworm and flea prevention, and current on all vaccinations. I weigh about 35 pounds right now, and I’m still going to get a little bigger. The vet says

maybe I’m a Lab mix, but I say I’m an original. Every-one I meet tells me how cute and sweet I am, and my foster mom tells me I’m so smart because of how well

my potty training is going. I am crate-training and house-training, and I have to say I am good at it! I live with kids and other dogs in my foster family, and I love all of them. I still have lots of puppy energy and I can’t wait to play with everyone I meet. My foster mom says I can only go to a loving, indoor home. If you’re inter-ested in adopting me, email [email protected]

or call 910-520-1314 to set up a visit!

My name is Ricky Bobby and I am a 17-month-old, male Great Dane mix. I am full of energy

and will keep you on your toes. I am still learning how to interact

with humans so sometimes I take a little while to warm up to new people. I am doing very well with the other dogs in my foster family. I am also good with cats. I sometimes forget

what the proper etiquette of the household is so I have to be

reminded of the rules often. I love to eat and I will try to eat

out of everyone's bowl, too! My foster family says I am still learning that I'm a big boy when interacting with people and dogs and my enthusiasm some-

times gets the best of me. I get excited playing and forget that not jumping on people is one of the house rules. I hope to

make someone a great and loyal dog, but I just need an owner who will continue to create boundaries for me. I really want to please my foster parents and am trying very hard to learn what rules are and why they should be followed. My family tells me what a sweet boy I am and how quickly I learn from them, in-cluding the Great Dane in my family. For more info about me or to give me a forever home, please contact the NC Chapter

Mid-Atlantic Great Dane Rescue League by calling Terri at 252-566-8934 or visiting www.magdrl.org.

I am sponsored in appreciation of everyone who has

rescued a homeless animal.

Hello, friends! My name is Flower and

I’m an 8-year-old Chocolate Lab girl

who was found as a stray. I have been

spayed and I’m current on my

vaccinations. If you’re like me, your days of chasing tennis balls

are a thing of the past. Don’t get me wrong, I’ll be happy to take

companionable walks, but I’d also be content to cuddle and watch

TV. I’m a loving, friendly girl who can

sit on command and catch treats in my mouth. I’d be so grateful to share a comfortable, loving home with you. If you would like to know more about me or would like to in-

quire about the adoption process, please call Adopt-An-ANGEL at 910-392-0557.

I am sponsored by the Miss Avis Davis Fund, thanks!

Can you hear me purring? My name is Rosie and I’m an extremely affectionate kitten who is looking for a

good home. I was brought to Pender County Humane Society by a nice lady who had been feeding me when I was a stray hanging out by a storage unit. I get

along great with the other kitties at the shelter and I love getting attention from humans! I'm spayed, cur-rent on vaccinations, litter-

box-trained and under 1-year-old. I’d be so grateful to have a furever home!

Come to the shelter and get to know me. It’s a cage-less environment, so you can play with me and watch me inter-

act with the other kitties and all the toys that are laying around. If you’d like to get things started, please call

Pender County Humane Society at 910-259-7022 and tell them you’re on your way!

I am sponsored by Christine Watkins of A Pet Nanny.

Thank you!

My name is Snoopy and I am a beautiful

Beagle and Blue Tick Hound mix. I am only 17 pounds and the vet

guesses that I am about 2½-years-old,

so I should stay about this weight for the rest

of my life. My head looks just like a

Beagle and then my coat has the exact markings of a Blue

Tick! I was picked up by a caring person on Highway 421 and the wonderful folks at Animal Control thought enough

of me to get me into a foster home before my time was up. I am missing part of my ear because something bit it

off, but it doesn't bother me in the least. All I care about is having someone to snuggle up with on the couch, in the bed, or just about anywhere. I have a funny bark when I

see squirrels and birds, but I can also be very quiet. I play well with other dogs, adore children of all ages, and am

very passive by nature. Please call my foster mom, Grace, at 910-352-6256 if you would like to give me the

forever home that I so wish for!!

The Fort Fisher Aquarium is a wonderful place, but it’s not much fun when you’re dumped there.

That’s what happened to me. My name is Missy

and I was found wandering the grounds of the build-ing. It was obvious that I

had once been someone’s loving pet, but that’s all in the past and now I need a new family! I am a super-friendly dilute Tortoiseshell girl who loves to be held

and petted. At just 2-years of age, I am already spayed, vaccinated and litterbox-

trained. I am a playful darling who really loves small rugs on a smooth floor! I enjoy a soft bed to sleep on and lots of good food. (I’m still a little thin from being on my own.) Oh, I’m good with adults, children, dogs and other cats.

Please let me be a part of your family! To adopt me, call Cat Adoption Team at 910-792-9014. We’re also at

Petsmart seven days a week.

I am sponsored by Phoenix Rising Agency, Inc.

►My name is Lee-Roy and I am a SUPER

dog! I ran out of time at Animal Control - which is unbelievable! I am very eager to please, submis-

sive, grateful and so very sweet. I get along with everything, too. I have been neutered,

crate-trained and vacci-nated but am undergoing heartworm treatment. No extra

expense to you unless you'd like to contribute to my cause. Please mail checks to Adopt-An-ANGEL, P.O. Box 15095, Wilmington, NC 28408. Put Lee-Roy in the memo line! Look how pretty I am with one blue and one brown

eye! I am one Happy Go Lucky Boy!

►My name is Prince and I was found running loose and turned in to Animal Control. When no owners came forward and no one adopted me, I ran out of time. Fortunately, Adopt-An-

ANGEL had a spot and took me in. I had a huge, ugly wart on my head. Apparently, I tried to kiss a toad to marry a princess, but only got a wart instead. But then, my wart exploded and required emergency surgery and that's when Magda Ratajski

and other kind folks chipped in and paid my vet bill. Wow, what a story! I am neutered, heartworm negative, vacci-

nated and even had my wart taken care of. I am a big, lazy, loveable Hound who is very laid back. I do like to run for a

few minutes each day, but I lounge the rest of the day. I am house-trained and very, very sweet. Being homeless is ex-

hausting! I need to get to where I am going so I can just rest. I get along great with other cats and dogs and would

benefit from being in a home with another dog.

◄My name is Elizabeth. Look how cute and adorable I am! I am around 10-weeks-old and you can find me at

Pet Supermarket on Oleander until I get adopted. I am al-ready spayed and have had

one set of shots so far. I am a British Shorthair - see my

round face. I am so friendly and come from ROYALTY! I have been named after the

Queen of England. I am litter-trained, too.

◄My name is Bo and I was dumped at Skip's Tire on Highway 17 in

Brunswick County. They saw a lady chuck me out of her car and drive off.

Unfortunately, no one got any info on her - they

were too shocked. They gave me to Brunswick Animal Hospital who

turned me over to Adopt-An-ANGEL. I am neu-tered, vaccinated and recovering from a skin infection, too. I have

been treated for heart-worms and ready for my new home! I am a really, really nice and grateful dog who deserves WAY better than the hand I have been dealt so far. By the way, it's not cool to

dump dogs on busy highways.

►My name is Tiger and I had been at Pender County Animal Control

for several months when the shelter ran out of room and I ran out of

time. When Adopt-An-ANGEL had no more room in their program, Amy San out of California spon-sored my boarding fees so that

Adopt-An-ANGEL could take me in. I love that lady! Thank You! I am an energetic guy who is full of life and starving for attention. It is so sad that I had to spend this long

being homeless. Won't you please come meet me at Petco and give

me a chance? I am neutered, up to date on my shots, and heartworm negative. I am a

Catahoula mix and look how beautiful my markings are!

◄Yo! My name is Slim Shady and I am a

CUTE BOY! I am great with cats and people! I have

been getting used to dogs at Pet Supermarket, which is

where you can find me. That’s also where I am sign-ing Pawtographs. “I'd like a home...to call my own...and

some people to...dote on me!” That's my rap song

and I'm sticking to it. Pretty good for some baby alley cat, don't you think?

Special thanks to Event Coordinator, Trish Arnold, for raising over $2700 from the Bow Wow Luau!

Thank you SO much Bottega Art & Wine for raising $472 during the Art Exhibit Fundraiser for Adopt-An-ANGEL!

URGENT, URGENT! I’M RUNNING OUT

OF TIME!

Hello there, my name is Midnight (CM2579)! I’m a

beautiful boy with lots of love to give a very lucky family or indi-vidual. So why has-n’t anyone realized

that yet? I’ve been at the shelter since

June and I watch the visitors as they come

and go. For some reason, no one

seems to notice me. It’s quite a mystery

as I have soft brown eyes, glossy ebony fur and a friendly, loveable personality. I’m a young Black Lab mix, probably 2 to 3 years of age, and I was found as a stray in Pender County. I’m a very affectionate boy who is happy to make friends with everyone and I have a playful attitude toward life. I would love to become part of a loving family, play in the fenced-in yard, and cuddle with them on the couch or carpet. Could you make my dream come true? Please call Pender County Animal Control at 910-259-1349 or

Officer Clewis at 910-279-3196. You’ll find me here, wait-ing to hear your voice outside my kennel door.

I am sponsored by Kathy Lanio. Thank you!

◄How did a well-trained, well-behaved boy like me

end up as a stray? My name is Dexter (A029401)

and I’m a 7-month-old Yellow Lab mix. I was

wearing a blue collar, but no one has ever claimed me. I guess this is your lucky day! You see, I’m friendly, affectionate and

soooo smart. I can sit and lay down on command,

and I don’t like to use the bathroom in my kennel,

which suggests I’m already house-trained. I also went nose-to-nose with other doggies here and simply wagged my tail. I’m super!

►Hi, guys! My name is Farley (A029522) and I’m a Chinese Shar-Pei mix. The Shar-Pei originated in

China, but I’m an American dog who was found in Brunswick County as a

stray. I’m such a friendly boy and I love to eat dog cookies. In my photo, I’m waiting for one to land in my mouth! I also love to be

cuddled. At just 5-months-old, I’m still a puppy with lots of happy memories to give someone. If you’ll drive on out

here, we can get started on that right away!

◄Betty White! That’s me (A030594). You see, I’m a totally white female kitten, just 8-weeks-old. I

may not be a beloved 89-year-old television star, but I think I’ll be just as popular with

my new family. I defi-nitely know how to

entertain people (just watch me play with

some toys) and I can make you fall in love

with me, too. Hold my soft body in your arms and listen to me purr.

I’m not a Golden Girl (I’m just a baby), but I promise our lives will be golden if you’ll just bring me home.

◄Won’t someone please adopt me? I’m so tired of liv-ing my life in a cage. If you come visit, you’ll see that all I want to do is get out and be with a family. My name is Leila (A030827) and I’m a 1-year-old Tortoiseshell girl who was found in Brunswick County as a stray. Someone must have once looked after me because I’m very used to being with people and am quite social. Please come see me. I’m beautiful and sweet!

◄Sitting on command is a specialty of mine, so I’m demonstrating that for you in my photo! Hi, my name is Toki (A029910) and I’m an 11-month-old Black Lab mix who was found as a stray. I sure am happy and people-friendly, so I must have once been loved. I’m hoping you’ll give me the chance to love again! Come visit and you’ll find a well-behaved, gentle boy waiting for you.

►I’m a pure white, blue-eyed beauty who loves to be held close and cuddled. And talk about friendly! I make friends with everyone and possess a happy, outgoing personality.

I’m Rascal (A030052), a 6-month-old Siberian

Husky mix girl. I appear to be deaf, but please

don’t let that worry you! I am smart and obser-vant and keep my eyes on you so that I know

what you want me to do. Just think, I’ll never be

scared by loud noises such as thunderstorms or fireworks. That’s a plus! I really love receiving belly rubs (I have the softest tummy) and I get along well with other dogs. My

sister came to the shelter with me, but she was just adopted. Now it’s my turn! I am up to date on vaccina-

tions and would love to be your girl. Hurry on over!

My Little Stolen Billie Has Been Recovered!

My unending thanks to a Good Samaritan, who saw my ad in PawPrints, recognized Billie

running loose in her neighborhood off Futch Creek Road, and got hold of me! Of course, Billie’s microchip confirmed

everything. She had been stolen on May 5th.

Billie was dirty, unkempt, overweight, had fleas and worms, a collar without tags, and

barely resembled the sweet dog in this photo. But she recognized me and wouldn’t stop giving me kisses! Even though she is only

9-months-old now, she has very little puppy perkiness, and has developed “insecurity”

behaviors that were never there before. However, my robust 18-month little

Border-Jack [who I adopted after seeing in a PawPrints ad] is re-introducing her to play,

yard exploration, dog-snuggling, etc.

Thanks to everyone who prayed and uplifted me through this ordeal. I learned the hard way how prevalent and heartbreaking pet theft is. I am sold on PawPrints; it is the single vehicle through which I got the most feedback while

Billie was gone.

Compassionate Cat Lover Needed Desperately!

We lived in a loving home for years, then everything

changed. My name is Claire and I’m 16-years-old. My best buddy, Gracie, is a youngster in comparison at 10-years of

age. We shared a life together, a very happy and comfortable one. Then our elderly owner became ill and couldn’t take

care of us. There was no one else to take us in and we were brought to Southport Oak Is-land Animal Rescue (SOAR.)

It’s quite a change to go from a comfy home with familiar sights and sounds to the strange sur-roundings of an animal shelter.

Isn’t it sad that, at our ad-vanced age, we have no spe-cial person to love us? We

each enjoy being held and will snuggle up in your arms. We

can’t get enough kisses and are so happy to receive attention.

We appear to be in good health and are spayed, vaccinated

and litterbox-trained. We’d love to be adopted into one family. If that’s not possible, we

can be adopted separately. Please spread the word about us to your friends! We deserve the dignity of a peaceful senior life and we hope there is someone out there who

will take us into their heart. Call SOAR at 910-457-6340 to find out how you can meet us.

We are sponsored in loving memory of Speckles.

Gracie

I love to cuddle and sit in your

lap! Hi, my name is

Handsome and I’m a 4-year-old Newfound-land mix. I’m sure you can see how I got my name! Not long ago, I was rescued

from a hoarding situation and now find myself at Pender County Humane Society. Everyone has fallen head over heels in love with me because I’m such a friendly, affec-tionate boy. I get along great with other dogs and would

be a perfect companion for any individual or family. And have no fear - I’m already house-trained and leash-

trained. Oh, and before I forget, I’m also neutered, current on my vaccinations, and on heartworm prevention. So if you're looking for a cuddly, big bear of a dog, look no fur-

ther than me! Please call the shelter at 910-259-7022 and let’s get to know one another!

I am sponsored by George, Brenda and John Harriss in loving memory of Miss Scarlett, Rosie Belle, Candy

and Lady, special friends, all.

◄My name is Pearl. I have some hearing loss and I do

not see very well, which makes it difficult for me to adapt to new surroundings

and I startle easily. I am lov-ing life in my foster home -

hanging out under the dining room table for my naps and dancing around the room in

the evening. I do love human attention once I get to know

you. Head and ear rubs are the best! In my foster home, I am next to some other bunnies and what I would love most is my very own bunny friend. Because I don’t see or hear very well, a friend would make me feel so much more safe and

secure.

►Hi, I’m Peter. The sad face is because my

family of 7-years no longer wants me. I

know, can you believe it!! Typical story – kids are grown, no one is

interested in me, in spite of all my attempts to

make myself loveable. I just had a checkup and I

am very healthy, and since most dwarf rabbits

live to be age 12 or so, I have lots of good years ahead of me. Will someone please give me a chance! I weigh 2 pounds, am neutered and litterbox-trained and very

friendly. I especially like cats.

◄My name is Belle, you know, as in Belle of the Ball! That’s me – a big,

beautiful bun who would

love to meet you. I am 3-years-old and have a very positive out-

look in spite of my difficult life. I lived outside, and was even-tually turned loose to fend for myself. I

get along well with dogs and

cats. I actually try to boss them when I can, which would not make me a good bunny for a child. I have a lot of per-sonality and can certainly be the diva in your life! I weigh about 6 pounds, am litterbox-trained, spayed, love playing with my toys and eating my green salads. To adopt me,

please call today or visit www.capefearrabbits.org to view more adoptable rabbits.

►My name is Penny and I am

looking for a new home after being abandoned in a filthy

apartment. Life was

horrible then, but it is good now and will be even bet-ter with a family of my own. I don’t trust people very much but everyone now seems so nice that I think I’m changing my mind. I am a curious little girl by nature, and like to be right in the middle of the action. They say I am quite the

looker with my big blue eyes. You’ll just have to come see for yourself! I weigh about 4 pounds, have been spayed and am perfect with my litterbox. Please come meet me.

►Hi, I’m Lucy, a very friendly big white bunny who nearly became lunch for some-one’s pet falcon. Considering that I spent my whole

life in a 2’ x 2’ cage, I have

come a long way in 3-months. I

had no idea bun-nies could do fun things like jump on boxes, run

really fast, or eat yummy food like

dandelion greens. One of my favorite things to do is when someone walks by my pen, I stand up and give them my most ador-able look so they just have to pet me, which I just love. I have to admit, I have my ornery moments, too. Like pre-tending I don’t hear when it’s time to go back in my pen or knocking the food scoop out of my foster mom’s hand just to watch the pellets fly everywhere. So if you are looking

for a spirited, fun-loving, affectionate rabbit, here I am!

Found as a stray and taken in by Cape Fear Golden Retriever Rescue, the young Lab mix was waiting for someone to bring him home. After all, it was A d o p t - a - S h e l t e r - D o g month and he was a prime example of all the wonder-ful shelter dogs waiting for families. Tom and Marcia Fisher were two who recog-nized that right away. Below, Marcia shares the story of how Seth, re-named Shep, came to be part of their family: “I saw Shep's picture on the cover of PawPrints online.

We had a choco-late Lab named Blue who had died the year be-fore. When I saw Shep's face on the cover, he looked just like Blue, only a beautiful golden color. Then, when I read his bio, he sounded like the perfect dog. We didn't want to go through the puppy training stage again like we did

with Blue. Shep was already leash-trained, house-trained and well mannered; the perfect dog. When we first met Shep, he was very frail because he was going through heartworm treatment. We could only take him for a short walk around the park, but he was very calm and sweet. I was nervous at first but, being a nurse, I wanted to take him home and care for him. He wouldn't

eat when we brought him home, but apparently this is common with stray dogs. We would have to stand beside him and hold the bowl up to his mouth to get him to eat. I couldn't wait to take him for a walk! He seemed very happy to finally get to go for a walk and now Tom takes him for a walk two times a day, everyday, 365 days a year. Blue always slept in his crate in the garage. He loved his crate and would go in and out of it at his leisure. We bought a new fancy mat for Shep to sleep on in the crate. The first night home, Tom put him in the crate and for some reason only latched the top latch on the crate, not the bottom one. The next morning, Shep was laying at the bottom of the stairs in the garage and the crate had been moved across the floor with the latch still secured at the top! We still don't know how he got out of it, but he did and has never slept in that crate again. Now he sleeps wherever he wants to in the house. Our adult children call Shep “yellow dog” after the dog in the movie “Funny Farm” with Chevy Chase because Shep is so laid back. They each have dogs that come with them when they visit and Shep gets along with all of them. Everyone that meets Shep thinks he is such a great dog. Our neighbors kept Shep for us recently while we were on vacation. They also have a rescue dog, Ginger. Ginger would be barking at something and Shep would join in, looking around as if to say, ‘What are we barking at?’ Shep is a great companion. He will thump his tail on the floor when you get up in the morning or when you come home, he never barks or whines, loves riding in the car, and walks well on a leash. He gets along well with other dogs and is just the sweetest dog ever.”

Seth, re-named Shep, rolls joyfully in the grass at his new home. Ear rubs and

daily walks are other favorite activities.

Shep, in foreground, sits in front of his adoptive parents, Marcia and Tom Fisher, and is surrounded by the rest of the

Fisher clan, including four other furry family members.

CAT: Cat Adoption Team

◄I’m a pink-nosed, grey and white darling

named Emma Lou and I’d love to be your girl! I enjoy being held, kissed and stroked and have a very calm, friendly personality. At just 1-year-old, I was

rescued from a shelter with my five kittens when we were all

running out of time. I’m happy to say my babies

have been adopted, and now I hope to share in their good fortune! I

get along with other cats, but am at my sweetest when I’m the only feline. I’m also spayed, vaccinated and litterbox-trained. Let’s go!

◄Looking for a Lap Cat? Well, just say the word, and I’ll warm your lap right on up. My name is Alice and I’m a 1-year-old girl who was found at Animal Control, running out of time. I had three kittens with me so Cat Adoption Team took us all home with them. I’m a very sweet orange and white girl who loves to be held and kissed. I’m good with children and other cats and have a friendly, playful nature. Let’s go home today!

◄Hello! I’m a black Siamese mix girl named Kigali. Want to know

what my favorite toy is? Laser lights! I have a fun time chasing those

things around. You see, I once was part of a loving home. That’s

where my fondness for laser lights was

discovered. But my owner moved away and now I’m all alone. I’m a darling girl who loves to be held and petted. At

just 2½-years-old, I can’t understand why I’m homeless. I’m currently in a foster home - call to meet me!

►Have you ever met a cat who listens to

the radio? Now you have! My name is Amanda and I just adore the sounds

that come out of this amazing invention.

My foster mom plays all kinds of tunes for

me. I’m a very sweet and playful girl, just 1-year-old. I was found

at Carolina Beach, quite near to the sand. Maybe I was listening

to the music of the seashells. Adopt me!

◄I have no tail, just a little nubbin. It makes

me look like a bunny, so that’s how I got my name, Rabbit. I also have long,

silky, black fur so I’m quite a stunner! I’m a neutered boy who gets

along great with kids and other cats. I was found at

a dump (crazy, huh?) and was taken to Animal

Control. That’s where Cat Adoption Team found me.

I am quiet, gentle and I love to be rubbed and

given attention. I’m also vaccinated and litterbox-trained. Take this bunny home!

►Hello there! My name is Pepsi

and I’m the orange kitten on the left. I have beautiful

orange eyes, too! Next to me is my

Tabby buddy, Charlie. We’re not related, but

we get along great with other felines

so we share a cage. We are two

neutered boys, vaccinated and litterbox-trained. We also get along with children and dogs. We love everybody and

have no hang-ups. Adopt us separately or as a pair!

Wouldn’t I make your

house a home? My name is Lilah and I’m ready to bring plenty of

purrs into your life. I’m a 2-year-old,

long-haired beauty who was found as

a stray on Long Beach Road. I

was nursing three kittens at the time, but I was very thin and hungry. Ani-mal Control found me and brought

me to SOAR. Life got better as my babies were adopted and I was given vet care and good food. Now look how gorgeous I am! I have been spayed so there will be no more kittens in my future. In fact, it’s my hope that I will become someone’s baby. I’m a very sweet girl who is vaccinated and litterbox-trained. Al-

though they’re good to me here, I really want to be in a home and am tired of living in a caged area. Please call SOAR at 910-457-6340 and tell them you’d like to come meet me. I’m even more beautiful in person, of course!

I am sponsored by SOAR in loving memory of all their

wonderful, furry friends who made it safely to the Rainbow Bridge.

URGENT, URGENT!

I’M RUNNING OUT OF TIME!

How is it that a petite beauty like

me is overlooked? My name is Foxy (CF2733) and I’ve

been living at Animal Control since June of

this year. That’s a long time! The sum-mer was unbearably

hot and I’m very ready to enjoy fall

with my new family. I was found as a

stray, just skipping down the road, as lost as could be. I have a smallish build

(perhaps 30 pounds) and red fur, which truly makes me look like a fox. I’m all dog, though, I promise. You can’t

hug and cuddle with a fox, and you can’t get them to walk on a leash. I do all those things quite well! At just 1 to 2-years-old, I’m a young girl with lots of memories to make with my future family. Won’t you come to the shelter and meet me? You’ll find a friendly, affectionate friend waiting

to love you for the rest of her life. Please call Pender County Animal Control at 910-259-1349 or Officer Clewis

at 910-279-3196 for directions or more information.

I am sponsored by Kathy Lanio. Thank you!

Cat Tails

◄I may look like an averagy Tabby cat, but you couldn’t be more wrong! My name is Ames and I am the

most loving cat at Cat Tails. I’ll let anyone

hold me and once I’m in their arms, I just

snuggle in for some good ol fashioned

lovin’. You won’t want to put me down and guess what, I won’t

want to get down! But after some snuggling

time, I want to play and get kitty crazies! So, I am the best of both worlds, the yin and yang.

►If you like choco-late but don’t want

all those nasty calo-ries, you should come adopt me, Hershey. I am a

beautiful, dark brown just like a

dark chocolate bar and I’m just as

sweet. I am very quiet and just a

youngster at 6-months-old. My favorite pastime is sleeping in someone’s arms, or just being held. So if you want that bit of sweetness in your life, calorie-free, I am

the deal.

►If you need a friend, come see me,

Dakota. You see, Dakota means “ally” in Sioux and that means I am a friend to every-one. I am a 7-month-

old, male orange Tabby who is very

energetic and active. I will run across the plains, swim a river,

climb a cliff, anything to find a home. So come find your new

best friend.

◄No, I am not named after the

restaurant, “Big Boy”

and I am not a big

hamburger! Someone named me

that be-cause I am a big kitty.

Feel free to adopt me and change that name to something more dig-nified. I am a beautiful, 1-year-old, lynx-point Siamese mix. I am a very “cool” kitty taking great pride in just

“chillin” and “checkin” out the scene. I would be happy to “hang” with you on your couch or bed and just relax.

◄Scallywag means scamp or rascal, which I think describes me perfectly.

However, some-one at Cat Tails named me Scal-lywag, because

my back end wags back and

forth when I walk. You see, I had a high fever when I was a baby and as a result have some minor neurological defi-cit. But I prefer to think they gave me my name because I’m a mischievous kitty. At only 4-months-old, I am still a baby who is always looking for adventure. I love to play

and scurry around and would be glad to show you my own personal way of walking. So come see me and you decide

for yourself why they named my Scallywag.

◄Eat a Peach, or maybe a Peachy.

You might think my name is peachy

because of the beauti-ful orange color, but

really it’s because I’m an Allman Brothers’ fan. However, my singing and dancing days are over. You see, I got hit by a car and broke my leg. It took a couple of months of

rehab and now I’m good as new. I love other kitties, dogs and you! How is that for a speech? So come take me

home and we can make music together, or eat fruit.

URGENT, URGENT! I’M RUNNING OUT OF

TIME!

How can this be? I’m one of those loveable orange Tabbies who only knows how to be friendly and affectionate. Doesn’t

someone out there want to kiss my chubby cheeks and take me home? My name is Citrus (FM2225) and I’m a young boy who has been living at Animal Control since June 15. It’s just

bizarre that I’ve been overlooked! I was born to be by someone’s side, or on their lap, or in their arms. I’m not picky! I do love to be held and kissed and have easily

stolen the hearts of the workers here. They really want me to find a great home. If you think you can provide one for me, or if you’d like to meet me, please call Pender County Animal Control at 910-259-1349 or Officer Clewis at 910-279-3196. Officer Clewis can tell you what a great kitty I

am and give you driving directions. Let’s get together soon!

I am sponsored by the Keffer family: Dixie, Luke, Kira, Nikki and Charly. Thank you!

Fun Fletcher! Aren't I the cutest? I'm probably the best dog that anyone can ever find. I had a foster family for a short time.

They couldn't keep me for long because of allergies. They even sought the ad-vice of a doctor and tried

me again, but her allergies never got better. I am a

GREAT dog! I'm very calm, love to chew my toys (and only my toys), and I never bark (except when the vac-

uum cleaner is running). I am very gentle while taking treats out of your hand and I am great with small children. I am also very friendly with other dogs and I absolutely LOVE to meet new people. Most importantly, I am house-trained. I enjoy long walks outside. Walking me was a pretty tough

job in the beginning but with the help of a training collar, walking me just became easy. A fence won't keep me from

getting out of the yard. I easily figured out how to climb over a six foot wooden privacy fence - I'm SO SMART!

Don't leave me outside unattended or without my leash. As much as I am very energetic outside, I am really calm and easy-going inside the house. They sometimes forgot that I

was in the house while I was busy chewing my rawhide bone for hours. Resting under the sun is also something I enjoy doing very much. So can you think of a better dog? They hope that a loving family will soon adopt their Fun

Fletcher. It saddens them to continue to see me homeless. If you would like to know more about me or would like to

inquire about the adoption process, please call Adopt-An-ANGEL at 910-392-0557.

I am sponsored by Francesca Slaughter in loving

memory of Casper and Lucy.

◄My name is Dog Vader (A242825) and I’m a Lab who’s looking for a Lab lover! I was found as a stray running loose on Wood Sorrell Road. Luckily

for me, Animal Control was called to picked me up. Now

that I have a safe place to stay here at the shelter, I’m focusing

my energy on finding a new home. I know how to sit, shake and lay down on command, I’m inquisitive and friendly, and I’m

just an all-around happy guy who enjoys the company of others. If you appreciate feeling

loved like I do, please come out and adopt me today!

◄I’m homeless through absolutely no fault of my own.

My mom needed to have major surgery and as a result, can no

longer take care of me. My friends call me Zoe (A239321) and in my opinion, everyone is

my friend! I’m a 1-year-old, cream-colored Retriever mix. I’ve already been spayed, I

take treats very gently, and I’m a family dog through and

through! I know how to sit, shake, beg and lay down on command, I’m good with kids and I’m house-trained. I love

to play fetch and will faithfully bring the ball back to you for another toss. I am a self diagnosed toy-o-holic. I just love those things. I’m happy to play with them by myself or you

can join in the fun, too! Interested in adopting a fabulous dog who is calm, obedient and eager to please?

►Would you by chance be interested in adopting a handsome boy who enjoys a good rub? For my sake,

I hope so! My name is Meowser (A244143) and

I’m a neutered Tabby boy. I’m a huge fan of kitty treats. Chicken ones,

salmon ones, catnip ones...they are all divine

to me. I bet you could even use my love of treats

to teach me some tricks! Stop by today to adopt a

handsome loverboy!

►My name is Socrates (A244498) and I’m

homeless because my owner moved into an

apartment that wouldn't allow me. I’m a 2-year-old neutered boy who is litter-trained and good

with kids. I’m very friendly, love being rubbed and I’ll even

stand on my hind legs so that I can push my

head into your hand for some loving. I love to

cuddle and hug and will even hug you back.

Why pass up everything you could ever want in a

feline friend? Get yourself out to this shelter now! I’m waiting and I really need you.

◄Hi, I’m Kenzie (A244164), a Border Collie mix. I’m calmer than most dogs of my breed and I can be a little shy at first. That doesn’t last long though and you’ll get to see my true per-sonality and just how lov-ing I can be. I’m gentle, I’ll rest my head on your knee, I like to snuggle, and I’m a true gem just waiting to be discovered. Don’t miss out on a terrific companion like me. I’m only 1½-years-old and already spayed.

►Did you know that cats aren't allowed in Mississippi? Crazy,

huh? My owners moved to that state and I wasn’t

allowed. My name is Persephanie (A243562)

and I’m very smart, spayed, good with kids,

and full of personality. I’m a fun and petite girl

who is 2-years-old. I came from a single cat

home so I prefer my next one to be the

same. Could you help me out?

URGENT, URGENT! We Need to Find Homes Soon!

Hi there, my name is Page and this is my best friend Coal. We’ve lived in a

home together for many years and are so sad to be searching for a new place to lay our heads. It would be

wonderful to be adopted together, but we can be adopted separately if we

each go to a loving home. I’m an 8 to 9-year-old female Shepherd mix and I’m a 95 pound teddy bear. Coal is an 8-year-old male Lab mix with an easy smile and a loving personality. We are house-trained, obedient and eager to please. We love going for walks, playing with children above

the age of six and we have lived har-moniously with a cat. We would be great companions for anyone. We are spayed/neutered, up to date on vaccinations and on heartworm pre-vention. Because we’ve lived in a home all our lives, we have great house manners and are well-adjusted, social,

friendly dogs. Would you please consider adopting one of us? Or perhaps both? We promise to give you so much love and so much companionship! You’ll never be lonely again. Please call the Sunburst Foundation at 910-622-0011 or email [email protected] for more

info. Hope to meet you soon!

We are sponsored by Hank and Grace Harrington.

COAL

I was a sad sight the day that Animal Control

picked me up by the side of the road. Emaci-ated, weak, and barely

able to stand, I was helped into the truck

and brought back to the shelter. It was Septem-ber 13 and I wasn’t sure how much life was left in me. I was so tired and sad. But the nice folks here began feeding me

small meals, a few times a day, and I’ve put on

some weight. Now that I feel better, my spirits are rebounding and I’m revealing myself to be a very friendly, social boy. Because I could stand to put on more pounds,

I’m known as Slim Shady (CM2887). Maybe, as I get bigger, I’ll be known as Healthy Weight Shady. Not as catchy, I know, but it would be nice! I’m a white Boxer,

around 3-years-old, and I enjoy meeting all the visitors who come to the shelter. I especially enjoy going for walks and am great on the leash. If you’d like to meet me and take me for a stroll, please call Pender County Animal Control at 910-259-1349 or Officer Clewis at 910-279-3196. I just

might be the companion you’ve been looking for!

I am sponsored by Charly and Nikki Keffer in loving memory of Dakota.

◄I hope you’re impressed by this very snazzy tuxedo I’m wearing. I promise to wear it every day if you’ll just come and take me home! My name is Henry and I’m a 2-year-old boy who became homeless when my owners moved. I’m playing just fine with the other cats at the shelter, and I’ve found some toys to entertain myself with. Still, I would much rather be part of a loving family. I’m healthy, litterbox-trained and sweet!

Please call about our low cost spay/neuter program.

◄My name is Sassy and I’m smiling at you! I hope you’ll decide to come see my smiling face in person. I’m a 4-year-old, 13 pound

Chihuahua mix girl and I’m simply adorable. I enjoyed being held for

my photo and am friendly to all the folks I meet. I once lived in a home with kids, but an

allergic reaction to dogs is what brought me to

the shelter. I’m house-trained and I used to sleep in bed with my

owner. I get along great with other small dogs and am spayed and on heartworm prevention. I’ll be waiting for you!

◄I’m a friendly, precious girl named Leyla. The human in the photo with me is one of the shelter volunteers, and I just loved getting cuddles and hugs from her. I gave the hugs right back! I’m a 5-month-old Hound mix with a gorgeous red coat. I’m good with kids and I get along just fine with other dogs and cats. My sister, Daisy, also needs a home. How about stopping by for a visit?

►My emerald-green eyes will take your breath away! To

see my photo in color, please visit PawPrints’ website at

www.pawprintsmagazine.com and click on the issue. You’ll

see me and all the others featured in the magazine. My

name is Tabitha and I’m a declawed girl who is good

with children of all ages. I’m very sweet and loving and I get along well with the other cats at the shelter. I’m also

spayed, vaccinated and litterbox-trained. Let’s go!

►Hi there, friends! My name is Dodad and I’m

an exceptionally nice boy. As you can see from my photo, I’m very good at

sitting on command. I’m also house-trained so

you’ll never have to worry about spots on the carpet with me around. At just 1-year of age, I’m a 70

pound Great Dane/Terrier mix who lost my home when the family moved

from a house with a yard into a small apartment.

They felt I deserved to be back in a home with a fenced-in yard. I lived happily with

another dog at the time and I am also ok with cats. Children are great playmates of mine, too! Come meet me.

Spot

◄Do Golden Retrievers melt your heart? Well, my name is Lady and I hope your heart has become a big puddle of goo just looking at me! I’m a 6-year-old sweetheart who lost my home due to a child’s allergic reaction to canines. It’s a shame because I’m so good with kids and I’m such a friendly, well-behaved girl! I will fetch balls and I ride well in the car. I’m house-trained, leash-trained, healthy, and dog-friendly. Adopt me!

Hello everyone! My name is Chantik (pronounced SHAN-

TEEK), which in Indonesia means "beautiful". I am a 5 to 6-year-old Golden Retriever and Aussie mix who is what some of you may call a "low maintenance" dog! I know

basic commands, I am house-trained and crate-trained, I LOVE to go on walks (and walk very well on a leash I may add), and I like other

dogs. I don't get on furniture and even like nap time on my own. I don't really get into

playing with other dogs that much, but I am fine living with them if I must. I'm a great size for a travel companion. I also am very unique in my look, especially my beautiful eyes, so I have been told. I'm up to date on my shots,

have been spayed and I'm totally ready for my new forever home. If you are interested in meeting me, please contact the Cape Fear Golden Retriever Rescue at 910-791-5001

or log onto their site as www.cfgoldenrescue.com.

I am sponsored by Cindy Meyers in loving memory of Harley and Murphy.

I’m CoCo MoonPie and I’m an 8-year-old

female Boxer mix. Six years ago, I was found wandering on

Highway 17 by a kind lady who scooped me up and rescued me.

I’ve been living at Paw’s Place ever

since! Please, won’t someone take a

chance on me and bring me home? I’m a truly wonderful girl. I enjoy chew toys and

being around other dogs and people. I’m so very sweet - I love giving lots of

delicious doggie kisses. If you have a 6-foot fenced in yard and a cat-free home, I hereby promise to be your loyal, loving, lifetime buddy. To find out more, or if you

need driving directions, please call Paw’s Place at 910-845-7297. Let’s get to know one another, OK?

I am sponsored by Christine Watkins of A Pet Nanny.

Thank you!

◄Hello! My name is Bella Maria and I’m a 2-year-old Walker Hound girl who was found on a

dirt road by a kind stranger. I was starving at the time but I’ve been

living in a wonderful foster home and am now

up to 31 pounds, fully grown. I’m very sweet

and I get along well with the six other dogs living

with me. This photo was taken at an adoption fair in Southport and I was so

happy to greet all the new people. Call today and let’s make plans to meet!

◄My name is Sugar Pie and I’m a 3-year-old Redbone/Bloodhound mix girl. I have floppy ears as soft as butter and I also have the most kissable mouth. In

fact, I’m kissin’ people all the time

because I’m extremely friendly and affectionate. I enjoy playing and

being with people. I love other dogs, too.

I really want to be part of a family. Would you let me be your new baby?

►Don’t you think I’m the prettiest

Rottweiler you’ve ever seen? My

name is Mama Roxy and, a few months ago, I wandered up

to Paw’s Place in sad shape. My eyelids had turned inward, irritating the eyes. My new friends got

me to the doctor and he corrected the

problem with surgery. Now I’m feeling great and batting my eyes

at everyone! I’m a 6-year-old girl who is spayed, vaccinated and on heartworm prevention. I’m extremely gentle and good with children. At 70 pounds, I have a very loving personality and I’m also house-trained. It

would be so wonderful to share my life with you!

►My name is Todd and I’m a great dog! My

date of birth is April 1, 2004 and I weigh 55

pounds. I’m full of love and I’m also full of fun

for you and maybe your kids or grandkids. I’m

house-trained and I have good house

manners. If you already have a dog, please bring him or her to

Paw’s Place and see if we can become friends.

I’m just aching to be someone’s best friend and companion. Don’t

make me wait!

◄Hi, my name is Peaches. You can’t tell by my smiling face, but my earlier life was a sad one. I was kept outside

and gave birth to litters of puppies. My new friends tell me that I will now be someone’s faithful com-

panion and, with my spay surgery complete, I’ll

never have to worry about puppies again. I’m an 8-

year-old, friendly and loving Golden Retriever mix. All I want is TLC and a nice place to live. I lived in a foster home for a while and am fully house-trained. I’m also vaccinated and on heartworm prevention. I’m not ask-

ing for much, just kindness and love. I’ll give it in return!

◄I’m a small Hound - just 30 pounds - and I was found as a

stray in South Carolina. My name is Juliet and I’m a sweet,

gentle, 1-year-old girl who would love to live in a quiet

home with my very own Romeo. I play extremely well with other dogs and enjoy taking walks.

I’m looking for a person or fam-ily with a fenced-yard and

a desire to share their life with a good-natured girl like me. I’m

already spayed, vaccinated and on heartworm prevention. How

about giving this Juliet a very happy ending?

My foster mom says I am the sweetest girl ever!

That must be how I got my name, Sweetness. I’m a 6-pound female Poodle

who loves to sleep under the covers in bed with you.

At just 2 to 3-years-old, I’m a true lap dog who

will follow you around the house and fill your life with love. I’m happy, quiet and am proud to say that I’m house-trained and leash-trained. I get along well

with the Golden Retriever in my foster home and I love to go for walks! I also enjoy playing with balls and toys. Since I’m such a small girl, it would be best for me to go to an adult-only home, or one with children that are older than five. I am already spayed, vaccinated and on heartworm

prevention. If you’d like to meet me, please call NC Rescue League at 910-232-5253. You can also visit their website

at www.ncrl.petfinder.com.

I am sponsored by State Farm Rob Cutting Insurance Agency in honor of Molly. Thank you!

My name is Little Girl and I’m an adorable combination of a Dachshund and a Beagle. I have a long body, short legs and a very

beautiful face! At just 3-years-old,

someone dropped me off at

Animal Control. That’s where Pender County Humane Society found me. Luckily for me and you, I’m already

house-trained, leash-trained and can sit and stay on com-mand. I’m definitely a people-person (or should I say peo-

ple-pup) as I get along great with men, women and chil-dren. I play nicely with other dogs, too! As for my health, I am already spayed, vaccinated and on heartworm pre-vention. If a loving, friendly girl is who you want to share

your life with, you’re in luck! Please call the shelter at 910-259-7022 and tell them you’d like to get up close and

personal with me.

Hi, My name is Beatrice. I was rescued just before my time ran out at Animal Control. I tested positive for heartworms, have had

my treatment and now I'm good as new. I'm a very sweet girl who is

about 5-years-old. I’m a Shepherd and Retriever mix and, as you can see, my beautiful long golden hair is growing back from

my short summer hair cut. I'm very friendly, I love everyone and get along great with other

dogs. I've been spayed and am up to date on my shots. I dream of hav-

ing a family to call my own, someone who would take me for walks and play with me. Could you make my dream come true? Please call Pet Friends of Duplin County at

910-271-3101 for more information.

I am sponsored by Pet Friends of Duplin County.

My name is Libby but you might want to call me

‘Libby the Lovebug’. I bet you can guess why, but I’ll

tell you anyway: I’m a very sweet and affection-

ate girl who is simply grateful for the touch of a kind hand and any loving words. I was found as a thin stray with my buddy,

Gus. He’s a Hound and is also at the shelter looking

for a home. I’ve put on weight in the months that I’ve been here and have made quite a positive im-

pression with my mellow, gentle personality. The folks here have yet to even hear me bark. I’m under 2-years-old and would love to be part of a family. I think I was born for that! I am already spayed, vaccinated and on heartworm preven-tion, so all I need now is for you to come fall in love with me.

For more info, please call SOAR at 910-457-6340.

I am sponsored by Cindy Meyers in loving memory of Tony and Stephen’s beloved Ruby.

Howdy folks! My name is Howie and I’m a super

special doggy with special needs.

As a very young puppy, I suffered a serious back injury and because of it, I’m unable to walk. I can stand up and I do hope to walk again one day.

I’ve been going to Eastern Carolina

Veterinary Referral for physical therapy every day. My friends at Capeside Animal Hospital also got me a nice set

of wheels so I can get around quite a bit. I love playing fetch and I like swimming. In fact, I can move my back legs when I’m in the pool! I am 11-months-old, neutered, heart-worm negative, current on all of my vaccinations and good with kids and other dogs. I love people and would love for you to give me a forever home so that I can be part of your family. Come see me and you will be amazed at how play-ful and energetic I can be. Just wait until you see how fast I can move with my set of wheels! If you could love a smart, happy and loving Border Collie mix boy with a heart of gold,

I hope you’ll consider me. I’m a really good dog. Please call Furever Friends Animal Rescue at 910-383-2100

Hello, my name is Bree! I'm a fun-loving and social dog! I love long walks on the beach (or anywhere!), playing in the ocean, and playing with other dogs. I am very family oriented and enjoy following my friends everywhere they

go! I'll follow you around, too! I have adjusted eas-

ily into my new foster home, and though I may feel a little sad when you leave for work, I'll be just fine with other pets or a toy or two. I love being out in the yard and won't get into any

mischief digging things up, trying to escape, or barking at passers-by! I'll play fetch all day long if you'll let me,

though my foster parents tell me I need to learn how to share my toys a little better. I sometimes feel sensitive

around my hindquarters when being groomed, but if we're playing I won't even notice. I will make a great addition to

any family - I'm great in social situations, with kids, and with other large dogs - although sometimes I am a little too interested in small dogs. I know all the basic commands,

like sit, stay, wait, shake, and down and will do almost anything for a treat! I really LOVE to eat! I'm a strong

eater (I even drool at the thought of food!) but I'm not food aggressive. You can take my food from me anytime - just promise to give it back! I can't wait to meet you! Please

Thank you!

This friendly, happy face belongs to me,

Kai! I’m a 1-year-old girl who is searching for a forever family. I used to belong to someone, but they

lived in an apartment and there just wasn’t

much room. Now I’m at the shelter, hoping to find a

family who has a fenced-in yard for me to play in! I’m

already house-trained and crate-trained and I will sleep in bed with

you, if it’s allowed. No one is quite sure what I’m mixed with - perhaps Husky or Akita - but I’m a beauty, that for sure. I am good with

children and lived with a 3-year-old and an 8-month-old in my former life. I’d prefer a cat-free home, but I get along just fine with other doggies. Why not come to the shelter and meet me? We can toss around a few toys and get to know each other. Call the New Hanover Humane Society

at 910-763-6692 so we can get started!

I am sponsored by Levi Donovan. Please consider adoption.

Page 32: PawPrints Magazine October 2010

My name is Henrietta and it is very nice to meet you! I

am a black Lab mix who is very affectionate! My temperament is very loving and

mild and I do not chew. I am also house-trained! I will love any-

one, but I think I would work best with a family with a child or children and a fenced yard to run, play, and chase after squirrels and birds! I was rescued on a cold November day. I was on highway 74/76, was starved and pregnant with three little pup-pies (who I gave birth to that night). I was nourished

back to health and my sweet babies were adopted out once they were ready to leave the nest. For someone who likes my breed, I would describe myself as loyal and obedient, but I do need structure of someone to

walk and play with! I am approximately 50 pounds, 3½-years-old, spayed, vaccinated and on flea prevention. I can be a little nervous and shy because of my past but I will warm up to other dogs after a few minutes of getting

to know one another. I have been around cats, but I think the dog inside of me prefers to be around dogs mostly. If you will let me call your house my home,

please call 910-574-7741. Thank you and I look forward to playing and cuddling with you!

Any retirement homes out there

have vacancies for a mini-Schnauzer gentleman? If so,

please contact Schnauzer Rescue

of the Carolinas right away and ask for me. I am Mac, a senior guy who

weighs 25 pounds. I lived my entire life outside as nothing more than a yard ornament, with no vet care, grooming, love, or affection. Now that I am in rescue, boy, do I love the good life. I am house-trained, crate-trained, great with other dogs, great with people, leash-trained, and just an all-around good boy. I would like a low-key home where I can enjoy the lei-surely things in life. I am up to date on all of my shots, neu-

tered, microchipped, and heartworm negative. I have a slight tear in my ACL, an old injury that never got fixed, but the vet says not to mess with it unless it bothers me. Right now, and ever since receiving great care, I don't even notice it. I go on regular walks and even go to doggy day care every day, and not even the slightest limp! Don't I sound great? So what are

you waiting for? Get online and visit the website at www.schnauzerrescueofthecarolinas.org and fill out an appli-

cation right away. If you have any questions, please call 910-264-8300.

◄Hello! I’m a Shar Pei mix named Bella (CF2655) and I’m waiting for the chance to be your girl. I’ve been waiting a long time, since July! Yes, that’s how long I’ve been at the shelter. I was in a foster home briefly and it was noticed that I get along just great with kitty cats! I was found as a stray and had a skin condition, but that has been treated and I’m doing well. I have a friendly, upbeat personality. Come see for yourself. You’ll love me!

◄I’m a cuddly, friendly, and loveable

Golden Retriever mix named Luke

(CM2846). As you can see from my

photo, I love being close to people and intend to be the best companion you could ever ask for! I was found as a stray in

Hampstead in August and it’s thought I’m

quite young at just 1 to 2-years-old. They

tell me I’m a very laid-back, easy-going kind

of boy. Wouldn’t you like to share your life with me? ►There’s just no reason for me to be homeless! I’m the

kind of cuddly, huggable cat that people dream of.

My name is Cosmo (FM2653) and I

arrived at the shelter on September 8. I

was a stray boy. The folks who work here discovered that I like to be held like a baby and, when you walk by my cage, I’ll poke

my paw out to pat you, but not with my claws. I’d be a great family companion for anyone! Give yourself the gift of me.

►I’m so new to this world! Who will be the one to show me what a

wonderful place it is? My name is Tinkerbelle (FF2693) and I have

been on this earth for approximately four to five

weeks. My two sisters (FF2694, FF2695) are here and they look just

like me, calico. We were found in a barn without

our mother, but luckily we have been eating wet

food. We’re so tiny and deserve so much love! Adopt one of us today.

►My gorgeous face doesn’t belong in a

shelter. I should be melting hearts in my

new home! Hello there, my name is

Gizmo (FM2562) and I’m a very friendly,

affectionate boy who has been living in a

cage since August. I wish someone would take time to pet and get to know me! I’m aweome and I love everyone! Please promise to stop by

and meet me, okay?

►Hi there! I’m a beautiful Black Lab girl named Cookie

(CF2527). And yes, I’m as sweet as my name! I know you’ll have a hard time believing this, but I’ve been living at this

shelter since June 2nd! It was such a hot

summer and I was longing for someone to take me into their air-

conditioned home. My prayers weren’t

answered, but I have high hopes for fall! I’m a

loving, friendly young girl who simply wants to be loved.

Page 34: PawPrints Magazine October 2010

We are Annabelle and Nala and we’re a mom and daugh-ter team of “teacup” Saint Bernards. We are purebred but we weigh under 80 pounds each! And since we are best

friends, we are hoping that someone will adopt us to-gether. We were running loose in Onslow County. Luck-ily, our foster mom found us and we have been living the

good life ever since! We like to play outside but being inside with people makes us happiest of all. We are still a bit shy with new people, but we are very affectionate and playful once we learn to trust you! We love kids and other dogs and have even learned that cats do not really like to be chased! We have been treated for heartworms and

have been spayed and vaccinated. Now we just need a forever home. Maybe with you? If you are interested in adopting us, contact Cape Fear Saint Bernard Rescue

910-547-4823 or email [email protected].

We are sponsored in loving memory of Calvin and Hobbs.

◄Do you like to give belly rubs? Because I like to receive them! My name is Abigail and I’m waiting here for some-one to love me. I have an innocent heart and a calm, cuddly demeanor. I’m not a jumpy girl. Instead, I’ll just roll over on my back for...you guessed it...belly rubs! I’m a 1-year-old Shep-herd mix who gets along well with all people and all dogs. I’m leash-trained, too, so you can walk me out today!

►Since my arrival at the shelter, I’ve been settling in nicely and making friends with

everyone! My name is Rebecca and I’m a

1-year-old Lab mix who was first spotted by the

Humane Society at Pender County Animal

Control. My sister and I had been found as

strays. (Hannah is on this page, too.) I am already spayed, up to date on shots and on

heartworm prevention. I’m gentle, sweet and precious. Could I please be yours?

◄I’m a fluffy ball of fur. Wouldn’t you like to come hold me in your hands? I promise to purr the whole time! My name is Muffin and I’m a darling 6-week-old girl who is highly loveable and very friendly to other cats. Someone actually threw me out of a moving vehicle, but the person in the car behind was kind enough to stop and pick me up! Whew, miracles do still happen! Help me out again by adopting me!

◄I lost my right eye to an injury when I was a baby, but don’t worry, it doesn’t bother me at all. I play,

skip, hop and melt hearts just like any other kitten! My name is Misty and I’m a 3 pound Russian

Blue girl who is about 10 to 12-weeks-old. I was in a foster home for a while, and they said I love to lay in laps and watch TV with my human friends. I get

along great with dogs and other cats. I’m very

affectionate, very healthy, and very ready to share a wonderful life with you!

►We’re a couple of Ragdoll kittens.

Would you like to adopt one of us? Better hurry

and call today! My name is

Raggedy Ann and I’m the girl on the left. Next to me is my brother, Raggedy Andy. We are soft, fluffy kittens who enjoy being cuddled and caressed. At

just 6 to 7-weeks-old, we have blue eyes and creamy fur. We’re sure to put a smile on your face and love in your heart.

◄Hey there! Are you looking for a fun and

fabulous friend? Well, hop on in the car and

come out here! My name is Hannah and I’m a

1-year-old Lab mix girl who is waiting to spend my life with people who

love me. Since my arrival at the shelter, I’ve been melting hearts with my

sweet nature and playful personality. I get along well with other dogs and am sharing a kennel with

my sister, Rebecca. She’s pictured on this page, too. Adopt me, please!

This is my third appearance in the magazine! I’m hoping and praying that you’ll come meet

me soon. My name is Jackson (CM2675) and I’m a young boy who was found as a stray. I’m

now at Animal Control’s shelter, where I’ve been enduring the warm temperatures in my out-

side kennel all summer as I await a new family. It will be so good to get in an air-conditioned house one day! I’m a friendly,

playful, happy fellow with caramel-colored fur. I’m proba-bly mixed with Lab and I like to please the humans

around me. Everyone I meet is my friend and I don’t seem to mind the other dogs at the shelter. Would you please make my dream of a family come true? Time is running out! Call Pender County Animal Control at 910-259-1349 or Officer Clewis at 910-279-3196 so that my

Looking for a goofy, happy-go-lucky guy? Look no further! I'm

Bennie and I'm a 1-year-old purebred American Staffy who

needs someone to love. I had a rough start in life

but I'm all better and have left the past be-

hind me. I've been neu-tered, am up to date on all my vaccinations and am on heartworm pre-ventative. I've been

working with a profes-sional trainer who tells me I'm a grrrrreat boy who is eager to please. I know how

to sit, stay and lay down on command. I'm also 100% house-trained. I get a little excited around other dogs and cats, so I would do best in a home where I was your only fur baby. If you are interested in adopting me, please call

910-231-4275 and let’s set up a date!

I am sponsored by Francesca Slaughter in apprecia-tion of Capeside Animal Hospital and Van Dyne K9.

Hi, my name is Jesse. I'm a precious, scaredy-britches,

sweet little Corgi mix who never felt the love of a hu-

man hand until I was over 3-months-old. I'm in a foster home that's got another girl doggie who used to be just like me, but she's learned that people are loving and

fun and security. She's help-ing me open up my heart to

receive all the love I so much deserve. I even jumped up on the bed to sleep with my foster Mom and Dad the other day! Anyone who adopts me MUST understand it will take me some time to trust and love, and I can NOT be outside without a canvas slip collar and a halter at the same time!

It will still take me a bit to get used to the big bad world and not ever be frightened of new stuff, but I've already come a

long way in a very short time. Please call Tails U Win at 910-250-3004 or email [email protected] to adopt

me. Visit www.tailsuwin.org to view more adoptable pets.

SOAR (Southport Oak Island Animal Rescue) Please call 910-457-6340 to adopt us!

◄Need a buddy? My name is Bubba and I’m an expert when it comes to making friends. I love all people, especially women. Can you blame me? After all, they love to hug and kiss me and tell me how adorable I am. I’m a Rottweiler mix who is smallish in stature and I’m already neutered, up to date on vaccinations and on heartworm prevention. I’m looking for a cat-free home, but other dogs are A-OK. I’m just a sweet guy who is ready to melt your heart!

◄Hello there, I’m Baby Snooks! I was found aban-doned in the yard of an Oak Island

home with no mother or siblings

in sight. I was born around June 30

and brought to my SOAR foster home

on July 6. I am now a healthy,

happy, playful female Tabby. I like to play with and be held by the small children from next door who visit regu-larly. I also get along well with the big dog and other fe-

lines at my foster home. Since I’m a bottle baby, I’m very sweet. I’m also vaccinated, spayed and litterbox-trained.

To adopt me, call my SOAR foster mom at 910-278-4437.

►Hello! I’m an extremely affectionate

Hound boy named Gus. I was found on Ocean Isle as a stray and was so skinny. Since my

arrival, I’ve put on some weight and I’ve im-

pressed everyone with my friendly, loving na-ture. I haven’t even barked yet! I love to

play and am estimated to be around 1-year-old. I don’t jump up on peo-ple and I’m good with other dogs. You’ll find

I’m quite handsome, too, so come on over and meet me!

►I’m Caruso and I’m quite a character! A

part-Siamese refugee from South Carolina, I was brought to my SOAR foster home by a lady who found

me abandoned. I was about 3-weeks-old when I

arrived. Being a kitten with a strong personality, I

would let the world know when I was hungry. Thus my name! I am extremely playful and like to be held. I weighed two pounds, five ounces on September 20

and am neutered, vaccinated and litterbox-trained. To adopt me, please call

my SOAR foster mom at 910-278-4437.

►My name is Louie and I’m a friendly, affectionate

boy. I’ve been at

SOAR for quite a while,

so I can hardly

express how grateful I

would be to be adopted!

Let’s just say that lots of purrs and kisses would be in store for the one who takes me home. It’s quite a mystery why I haven’t been snapped up. I love to play with toys and will keep my new family entertained! I use my scratching post

and litterbox and am in great health. Adopt me!

►When can you and I get together? You see, I’m looking for a playmate and best friend, and I

think you could fit the bill! My name is Sarrie and

I’m an 11-month-old Saluki mix who was found

as a stray on someone’s porch. My sister Sheba, who looks just like me, is also waiting for a home. I’m an ivory-colored girl

with a slender, small build. I get along great with adults, kids, other

dogs and even cats. I’m terrific so please hurry!

Page 40: PawPrints Magazine October 2010

Hello there, my name is Nesbitt but my foster

Momma calls me Nezzie. I finally got rid of those nasty heartworms, so I

am ready to be adopted. I am a very handsome boy who’s 3-years-old. In my opinion my pic-

tures don't do me justice. I am tri-colored and have wonderful freckles, and nice long ears. I am a very fun, playful boy. I love to be the center of

attention, and be the first one to be petted. I am a great wrestler - just ask my foster dad, he gets on the floor and plays with me and my foster brother. I am very sweet and love to cuddle while giving you some sloppy kisses. I am also a great shadow. I follow my foster Momma around

everywhere, I even lay outside the bathroom door and wait on her. One thing I need to work on - my food is mine and whatever falls on the floor is mine. I’m trying to learn that I will always have food and I don't need to fight for it. I have made lots of progress, but it is recommended that I go to a home that doesn't have young kids - although I love kids, it's just for the best. I do get along with my foster siblings, but when it's chow time I am not willing to share, so I eat in my own space. If you are willing to love me unconditionally even with my minor faults, I promise to be a loyal Hound to you. So whataya say? I'll have my bags packed in a jiffy!

◄I’m Dawson and I love all people, especially children! I’m a 3-year-old, flat-coated Retriever mix and I’d dearly love to belong to your family. I am house-trained, crate-trained, neutered, vacci-nated, and on heartworm prevention. I play well with other dogs and I’ve had no problem with cats. I can also sit on com-mand for treats. Don’t I sound like a great fellow? Call today so we can meet real soon!

◄Hello! This happy face belongs to me, Ming Ming! At just 2-years of age, I’m a

Boxer/American Bulldog mix girl. I have a very

sweet personality and get along just fine with other dogs and people. I’m al-ready house-trained and crate-trained and I walk

well on a leash. I am also very happy to sit on com-mand for treats! And yes,

I’m already spayed, vaccinated and on heartworm prevention. Don’t waste another moment - call today!

◄I Need a Foster Home so that I Can Get Out of Animal Control!

My name is Hero...and I need someone to be my

Hero! If you’d like to help me get out of Animal Con-trol and into the Sunburst

Foundation, please offer to foster me temporarily.

Foster homes are scarce and greatly needed! While you’re fostering me, I’ll be on the search for a perma-nent family. I’m a gentle

and loving male Lab mix with glossy red fur. I was found as a stray and have been at Pender County Animal Con-trol since August. Even though I’ve been here a while, I still retain my easy-going, happy nature. Help me out!

◄Hello! I’m Lola and I’m a very sweet and loving girl. I’m a 3-year-old Shepherd

mix and all I want is to please and be loved. I do have an old cruciate liga-ment injury which requires me to stay on glucosamine chondroiton for my lifetime. I interact very well with lar-ger dogs who are laid back, and it would be helpful if I were hand walked on a

regular basis to strengthen my muscles. I’m doing

beautifully in my foster home and hope to soon find a forever family. Let’s arrange a visit, okay?

◄I’m Rosie! I’m a medium-sized Pug/Spitz mix and, at

just 4-years-old, I’m a smart, friendly girl who would be a great agility dog. I adore

children and am friendly to adult humans as well! I am doing fine in getting along with other dogs and have

been working with an obedi-ence trainer. I would love to continue obedience training with my new family. I’m also spayed, vaccinated and on

heartworm prevention. You’d be so lucky to share your life with a great girl like me!

Hi, I’m Annabelle. I am a gorgeous Shepherd mix who is 6-years-young and

spayed. I am a big girl (100 pounds) with lots of love to give! I have many

exceptional qualities. I am a great watchdog with a deep bark. I walk well

on a leash and have been obedience-trained. I am invisible fence trained, too! I would love to live

inside again and you’ll be pleased to know, I'm

100% house-trained! My requirements are simple! I need a fenced yard or

invisible fence and a home where there are no other dogs or cats. Because of my extra-large size, I would do best with older children, too. I deserve another chance to find a great home, could it be with you? If you are interested in adopting me, please call Amy today at 910-253-0501

to arrange a visit. Hope to see you soon!

My sweet puppy charms have won the hearts of eve-ryone who meets me - now I just need my forever family

to come along! Hi, my name is Edgar and I’m a

9-month-old boy with a very sweet, respectful and obedi-

ent nature. I love to play, but I’m also willing to listen and eager to please. They

tell me I’m very smart! I was found as a stray and

stayed in a foster home for a while. While there, I was house-trained and learned

how to sit on command. I’m also neutered, vaccinated and on heartworm prevention. All I want is to love and be loved.

I’m great with everyone - men, women, children, cats and other dogs. I also enjoy playing with tennis balls! My

friends at the shelter are not quite sure what I’m mixed with, but Lab is a good guess. If you’d like to be charmed by me, please visit SOAR and let’s get to know one another! Just

Shelter News & Events

Halloween Fun for People and Pets The 3rd Annual “Howl-O-Ween” sponsored by Pender County Humane Society (a no-kill animal shelter) will be part of the Burgaw Area Chamber of Commerce “Trunk or Treat” program scheduled for Saturday, October 30. In the past this event has been a “howling success” and is one that is enjoyed by adults and young alike. Dress your dog as a bumble bee, a horned monster, an angel or what-ever your imagination can conjure. Any household pet can be entered so don’t forget about your cat or ferret. Enter your best dressed four legged friend in the parade around the Burgaw Courthouse as well as contests such as Cuties, Best Costume, Most Talented, etc. Afterwards, enjoy the many events that will take place in downtown Burgaw including the children’s “Trunk or Treat” in which the merchants of Burgaw fill up their trunks with candy for the children. For more information on entering your pet, contact Cindy at 910-675-0386 or send an email to [email protected].

‘Things I Wish I’d Known’ Phoenix Landing, in partnership with the Wilmington NC Bird Club, is proud to announce its first class in the Wilmington area. This is a free 2-hour class entitled "Things I Wish I'd Known" (about parrots) and is open to all parrot lovers. This class satisfies the Phoenix Landing educational requirement for prospective foster and adop-tive parents and is also recommended as a general infor-mational class for all parrot owners. The class is being held at the Northeast Branch of the New Hanover County Public Library, 1241 Military Cutoff Road, Wilmington, NC 28405 on Saturday, October 16, from 2:30pm until 4:30pm. Email [email protected] with any questions or if you would like to pre-register.

Monty says...“It’s Cool To Adopt!” Monty’s Home volunteers, family and friends will be “starring” in a video promoting pet adoption! As a part of the group’s new Pet Ed 101 program, a song was writ-ten by Mike Raab to help children gain a concept of the problem of overpopulation and what can be done about it. “It’s Cool To Adopt” carries the message that the perfect pet can be found inside the walls of your local pound. What better way to share the message than by creating a video? Come join the fun on Saturday, October 30th at New Hanover County Animal Control on Division Drive. (Yes, this unique project is a cooperative effort between Monty’s Home and New Hanover County Animal Con-trol!) If you are a “real” singer and want to audition for a role, or if you are great in the shower/car and can lip sync, contact Mary-Lou at [email protected]. If you are unable to participate in the filming, be sure to check Youtube for the finished product! Learn more about Monty’s Home at www.montyshome.org.

Urgent Plea for Foster Homes Since 2004, Adopt-An-ANGEL (AAA) has done over 4,000 adoptions. As part of their adoption contract, adopters agree to return the animal to AAA if for any rea-son it doesn’t work out. Due to the economy, the group is seeing up to 5 dogs and cats returned to them each week. AAA has no shelter and relies on the generosity of board-ing facilities and foster homes, who are also losing jobs and moving. Would you help by taking in a homeless dog or cat that has been returned until AAA has room to take it in? Many of these returns are from adoptions long past, 6-months ago or longer. Their ability to rescue new dogs and cats has been seriously diminished as they instead recycle their past rescues. If you can help by providing emergency foster care, please call 910-392-0557.

Belk Charity Sale Helps Animals The Sunburst Foundation is once again participating in the Belk Charity Day Event. This semi-annual Charity Sale benefits local charities and non-profits and will be held on Saturday, November 6, from 6am to 10am at Belk stores companywide. The funds raised will help Sunburst canines and will also go toward the vaccine and heart-worm program that Sunburst has set up for Pender County Animal Control. Tickets will sell for $5 each prior to the event. Each ticket sold is essentially a dona-tion and will be 100% retained by the charity. Contact Sunburst Foundation at [email protected] or call 910-622-0011 if you would like to purchase or sell tickets as an individual or business. Ticket holders re-ceive 20% - 70% off Belk purchases storewide, including special savings on rarely-discounted brands, plus, receive an additional $5 off of their first purchase.

Have a Heart, Help an Angel On August 12, Adopt-An-ANGEL (AAA) tested seven dogs that entered their program and was delivered the devastating news that six of them were heartworm positive. Heartworms are a treatable condition, but it is very costly even at the non-profit rate given to them by area vets. The more the dog weighs, the more expensive it is. Each treatment costs AAA between $300-$800. These dogs include Amy, a Rottie mix; Summer, a Labrador; Higgums, an American Staffordshire Terrier; Jazzy, a Chihuahua; Lee-Roy, a Husky and Retriever mix; and Big Lou, a purebred Neopolitan Mastiff who weighs 130 pounds! Big Lou, Jazzy and Higgums all lived together and were all relocated to AAA from Ani-mal Control after their owner lost his job and was evicted. Please help them help Big Lou who is by far the most expensive, or help them help the others by donating to AAA. Just put heartworms in the memo line and mail it to Adopt-An-ANGEL, P.O. Box 15095, Wilmington, NC 28408. All donations are tax deductible.

Looking for a well-behaved, well-trained dog who can

move into your house with no trouble? Check me out, I’m Percy! I was once the much-beloved dog of an elderly couple who gave me a great life. I played with their grand-children

(even snuggling in bed with them) and they took all

kinds of photos of me for their family album. Then,

sadly, one of my parents died and the other passed away later. A family member tried to take me in, but his dog didn’t want to share the home with me. Now I’m at Paw’s Place, waiting for my chance to be a family member again. I am house-trained, leash-trained, affectionate and playful. I’m a 6-year-old Boxer mix, 75 pounds, and am neutered, vaccinated and on heart-worm prevention. I know how to sit and come on command

and, as I mentioned before, I get along great with kids. I also have a fun time with other dogs and have been playing well with

others at the shelter. If you’d like to meet me, come on out! Call Paw’s Place at 910-845-7297.

What in the world is gravel? I am having trouble walking on this stuff, so they have put down rugs for me here at the shelter. You see, I’m a house dog and I’m used to smooth floors and sur-

faces, not tiny pebbles. My name is Petey and I’m a 25 pound Jack Russell mix. I

once had a wonderful home, but my human mom is terminally ill and I was

brought to Paw’s Place. I sure do hope to be part of

another loving family soon. I am house-trained, leash-trained, neutered, and friendly to all the humans I meet, including kids. I’d prefer to be the only dog in the household and am vaccinated and on heartworm prevention. I’m an active 12-year-old fellow who is in great health. Please adopt me - I have many more years of happiness to give someone! To bring me home where I belong, please call Paw’s Place at

910-845-7297. I’ll be on my rug waiting!

Our mission is to reduce the overpopulation of feral cats in New Hanover County.

I’m a family dog who has somehow ended

up at a shelter! I hope you’ll read this and

bring me home where I belong. My name is Izzy and I’m a loving girl, just 4-years-old,

who is friendly to eve-ryone I meet. I am

already house-trained, leash-trained and obe-dient - I know how to

sit on command. I get along great with chil-dren and other dogs. In fact, my sister is

waiting for a home at SOAR, too. We were once part of a family but our owners moved and couldn’t take us. I’m a perfect size at 32 pounds - not too big and not too small. They tell me I’m a Lab/Terrier mix. I’m al-ready spayed, vaccinated and on heartworm prevention. I’m such a happy, friendly girl and I love to receive atten-tion. Why not bring your kids to SOAR and meet me? I’d

love to go for a walk on the grounds. You just might realize I’m the companion you’ve been searching for! Please call 910-457-6340 for driving directions or any other questions

you might have about me. Can’t wait to meet you!

I Need Donations and A Home After Surgery!

I am looking for a Christ-mas miracle. Yes, in Octo-

ber. My name is Kayla, and I am a 5-year-old black and silver mini-Schnauzer

female who weighs 15 pounds. I came to rescue because I am blind. But

WAIT...don't stop reading, and please don't count me out! The specialist says

my eyes are perfect, and with surgery, I will be able to see!!! So, Schnauzer Rescue of the Carolinas is trying to raise funds so that I

can have this surgery and be adopted. We need to raise $2,500 within three months. Once I have my surgery, I will be a healthy, normal dog, and will need a home. So, if you are looking to make a Christmas miracle come true, please

apply to adopt me, get approved, and be waiting for me when my surgery is over. I would love that! I am an amaz-

ing girl, and even though blind now, I am house-trained, crate-trained, great with other dogs, and I love people. I navigate softly through the house and outside, and I am never discouraged. Being this wonderful now, can you

imagine how good I will be once I can see? I am spayed, up to date on all of my shots, heartworm negative, and

microchipped. Please apply to adopt me at www.schnauzerrescueofthecarolinas.org. Or, if you cannot adopt, please make a donation to my fund on the website. A sponsor has agreed to match all donations so we can

make this surgery happen. Call 910-264-8300 if you have any questions.

Well, you can already see that I’m an intelligent girl - notice how I’m sitting on command for my photo?

My name is Sheeba and my story starts out rather sad.

You see, I was adopted from SOAR as a puppy and was recently returned. My owner is moving overseas to Europe and I am unable to join him. Now, at 1-year-

old, I’m back at SOAR, longing to be part of a family again. I’m a female Hound/

Shepherd mix who is house-trained, leash-trained, playful and friendly. I get along with everyone - men, women, children, cats and

other dogs. I’m already spayed, vaccinated and on heart-worm prevention, too! I love receiving attention and am very affectionate in return. I hope you can see what a

great companion and best friend I would be. Please call SOAR at 910-457-6340 and let’s get acquainted real soon!

Happy Birthday, Patrick, in loving memory of Huck.

Hi, I’m Alfalfa! Yup, that’s right, I’m one of the Little

Rascals who are in training with the Pawsitive Partners Prison Program. There are five of us in all and we are

learning so much about be-ing good puppies. I’m only about 4-months-old but al-ready I’m becoming such a

little gentleman by not jump-ing and I also know where to go potty. I had a rough start spending most of my time at the county shelter, but that’s all behind me now. I just know the right home is out there

and will just fall in love with my handsome face! They think I am mostly Lab and Shepherd but it’s hard to tell sometimes ‘cause we are so unique. But that’s what

makes us so special. Don’t you want a one of a kind pup like me to call your own? Just call 910-262-3055 or go to

Purrfect Pet Adoptions Please call 910-329-4700 to adopt us!

We are sponsored in honor of all cats and kittens who have found loving homes with forever families.

◄My name is Dusky and I’m a very affectionate girl who loves getting attention from humans. I enjoy being held and have medium-length silver fur with a poufy tail. I’m so pretty! I know you will find this hard to be-lieve, but I was found aban-doned in a cardboard box. I can’t imagine who would do that to a kitty as friendly as me. I’m now hoping to put the past behind and start fresh with my new family. Adopt me and let’s begin!

◄We are two precious

kittens and we are searching

for loving families to keep us happy,

healthy and warm! We’ll be sure to give lots of

love in return. My name is Pridgen and I’m the boy on the left. Next to

me is my Tabby friend, Squirt. I was found under the porch at the local Red Cross, and Squirt was dropped off outside a store. We are bottle-fed babies, which means we’re extra sweet and accustomed to being held. You can adopt us separately or together, so come by today!

►My name is Jack and I’m

not at all a wiggle worm. No sir, when you hold me in your arms, I don’t try to get down. I stay put and

make biscuits with my

paws. Some cats don’t like

to be held, but not me! I’m a 20-week-old boy who was found in a cardboard box on a hot day. My sisters, Janet

and Chrissy, were with me. They’re available for adoption, too! We were so tiny at the time. I was bottlefed by my

foster mom, so I’m very used to being with humans. You’ll never regret adopting a wonderful cat like me. Come over!

►I have no issues and get along with everyone! So

why is a perfect family cat like me homeless? My name is Izzy and I’m a

good-natured, 4-year-old girl who hopes someone will see what a wonderful companion I would most

certainly be. I’m fine with other animals, I like to be

held and petted and I play well with children. I’m

already spayed, vaccinated and litterbox-trained. All I

need is you to come get me!

►I’m a 1-year-old girl named Bingo and I’d love to be part of your family!

I’m a very sweet and friendly feline who gets along well with other kitties. I am already

spayed, up to date on vaccinations, and litterbox-

trained. I’m a quiet girl who just wants a nice,

cozy life with people who adore me. Oh, and if you have a peacock feather or a few toys for me to play with, that would be great,

too. Swing by and let’s get to know each other!

►The power of prayer works! You see, I was

at a local church praying for someone to help me. Next thing I know, I’ve been scooped up and

carried to safety. Now all I need is a new family! My name is Princeton and I’m a 5-month-old male kitten. I’m a very

loving boy who is happy to be held and kissed. In fact, they call me a

certified “people cat” and an “absolute doll”. You

can rub my belly and flop me around and I don’t

mind a bit. If it’s affection you want, be sure to adopt me!

Hello, everyone! My name is Ally and I hope you’ll con-sider adopting me. I’m a 7-year-old Ridgeback/Yellow

Lab mix girl who desperately wants love and affection. I spent most of my previous

life outdoors and would love a home where I can come inside and be part of the

family. The folks at SOAR have been teaching me all kinds of great things - they

have two obedience trainers who volunteer their time at

the shelter and they’ve been working with me, as well as with the other canines here. I am a little shy when you first meet me, but a few treats do wonders in warming me up quickly. You’ll see that I’m a

very friendly girl! I am already spayed, vaccinated and on heartworm prevention. I hope you’ll take the time to call

SOAR and come out for a visit. You’ll find a wonderful girl waiting for you! The number is 910-457-6340.

PENDER ENDANGERED ANIMAL RESCUE

Hello, my name is Riley and I’m a male

Border Collie mix! I’m a very loving dog who

is already house-trained. I have a play-ful nature and love to go for walks or runs

with my humans. I’m a great friend to other dogs and also those

tiny humans called children. I can sit on command and am neutered, vaccinated and on heartworm prevention. If

you’d like to share your life with a happy and affectionate boy, look no further than me! Please call PEAR at 910-675-0867 or send an email to [email protected]

TAILS U WIN

My name is Corey and a big old meanie out there shot me in my front leg! Oh no! I’ve been to the vet and got my leg all fixed. My doc thought I would have a big limp, but I showed him just how strong I am, because I hardly limp at all now. I’m about 3-

years-old. I'm having a blast playing with all my kitty and doggie friends at my foster home. After all I've been

through, I need a home that will spoil me totally rotten. I promise to give a whole lifetime of kitty purrs! Call 910-250-3004 or email [email protected] to adopt me. You may visit www.tailsuwin.org to view more adoptable pets.

OPERATION TOPCAT

My name is Kiki and I am a little over 4-months-old and very sweet. There were 6 of us in the litter and I am the

only Tabby. Everybody else was black and I think that makes me

special. I would like to go with my brother, Mocha, or at least not be the only kitty as I am used to having oth-ers around. Maybe you would con-

sider us both. I like to play and run around. To find out more about me email [email protected] or call 910-200-

0612. I'm looking for a safe forever home and maybe it could be with you. To meet some of the other kitties here,

please visit www.petfinder.com/shelters/NC250.html.

Imagine well-trained ME, following at your heels, and looking up at YOU so

lovingly! My name is Becky and I will be the very next graduate of A Shelter

Friend’s New Leash on Life Program at the Bladen County Correctional facility.

In this program, I have learned excellent canine manners and can sit, stay, come,

heel, plus more! They all say I am an exceptionally happy, young, medium-

sized girl who loves children and would make the perfect addition to any family. Of course I have

already been spayed and am up to date on vaccinations, so when I graduate I will be ready to move into your home and heart! Please call Denise at 910-862-1728 to learn how we

can meet! I can’t wait, let’s go! A Shelter Friend can be visited online at www.AShelterFriend.org and on Facebook

COLUMBUS HUMANE SOCIETY

My name is Kodak and I'm about 12-months-old and full of

energy. You might want to know what breed that I am but I must tell you that I really don't know. I can tell you that I'm

100% pure dog. I was adopted when I was about 10-weeks-old to a wonderful family who loved

me and took really good care of me. My mom got very sick and she can't keep me (in and out of the hospital) and

so now I'm looking for another home. I'm all house-trained, up to date on shots, heartworm free, neutered,

good with children and other dogs and I really would love a fenced yard (that I can run and play in) and maybe a play-mate. Won’t you please open up your heart and home and give me a chance to show you just how wonderful a dog I

am? If you would like to meet me, please call Pat at 910-640-1505 or [email protected].

PHOENIX LANDING FOUNDATION

Hi, we’re Patty and Taylor. We are two blue parakeets who have been

together since hatching and are hoping to find a loving home that will

welcome us and allow us to stay together. We have not been han-

dled a lot in our previous homes but are young, sweet and gentle and

would love to have a human show us how to play! We love our seed treats, fruits and veggies and pellets. We are very quiet compared to the rest of the

parrot family and love to tweet and make soft whistling sounds. We have our own cage and toys and would love to come stay with you in your home. To adopt us, or an-other of the many parrots of all species who are awaiting

foster or adoptive homes, contact Phoenix Landing at www.phoenixlanding.org (click on adoption/foster), email

[email protected] or call 866-749-5634.

FUREVER FRIENDS ANIMAL RESCUE

Hi, my name is Celine and I’m a brindle Boxer mix. At

7-months-of age, I’m already spayed, vaccinated, house-

trained and heartworm nega-tive. I’m even good with kids,

cats and other dogs. I was rescued not too long ago with a broken front leg. It was in a

cast for awhile but it’s all better now. No more cast and I don’t even have a limp! I’m looking for a fun home where I can go

outside to play in a fenced yard. I am friendly, loveable,

energetic, and love adventure. I know how to “sit” on command and I’m eager to please.

Can you visualize my smiling face in your home? To make me part of your family, please call Furever Friends at 910-

383-2100 (Monday through Friday between 8am-6pm).

Hi, we’re the Flory Dory girls! We’re part of the Little Rascals group of puppies who are in training with the

Pawsitive Partners Prison Program! We are only 4-months-old so we have lots to learn about being well behaved so we can be adopted when we graduate next month. We soooo want to find a good home ‘cause, you see, someone tossed us out by the side of the road and

we were very lucky not to get hit by one of the cars speed-ing by. Hopefully we will be lucky again and you will send

in an application to adopt one of us or any of the other great puppies in our group. You can call 910-262-3055

to find out more about us or go to our website at www.montyshome.org to fill out an application.

PENDER ANIMAL RESCUE

Hi, I’m a Siamese mix kitten who is 1-year-old. My name is

Peanut. I am a female and a torte point. I

am very sweet but a little

reserved when I first meet

someone new. I am up to date

on vaccina-tions, I tested negative for

Feline Leuke-mia/FIV and

I’ve been spayed. My new family

must keep me indoors only. I am playful and entertaining to watch and I’m very neat and have good bathroom habits. To adopt me, please contact

my Pender Animal Rescue foster mom, Tonia, at [email protected] or call her at 910-285-7663.

PET FRIENDS OF DUPLIN COUNTY

Hi, I'm Mikey, a 4-month-old black kitten.

The orange tabby is Joey, a 5-month-old boy.

We're two kittens who were rescued after being

found fending for our-selves. I'm a little shy

until you get to know me and Joey is a little more outgoing. We both love

to play with our kitty toys. Our little friend Sammy from last month's maga-

zine got adopted and we're hoping our turn is

next. We've been tested for Feline Leukemia and FIV and are both nega-

tive. We're up to date on our shots and neutered. We get along great with all the other cats (and dogs) here and do not

need to be adopted together. Please call 910-271-3101 for more information.

My name’s Spanky and I’m not cranky, just a very cool

dude hangin’ with my brood. Yup, that’s right, the Little

Rascals are my group here in the Pawsitive Partners Prison

Program. I’m the laid back Beagle. The rest of the pup-pies all run around and scuf-fle, I’m just chillin’ waitin’ for

the right family to call my own. I’m learning lots about how to behave and some basic rules to live in a house. You see,

I’ve never been in one before, I hear they’re really cozy and

people are there most of the time...I just love people. It will be so awesome to have some of my own! Don’t worry,

there’s enough puppy kisses to go around , especially the little ones, they need extra lovin’. I know, ‘cause I’m just 3-months-old myself. So if you want to take me home, just call 910-262-3055 or, better yet, go right to our website and fill out an application! It is www.montyshome.org.

I am sponsored in honor of Spencer by Anna and

Bruce Tresidder.

Hello Darling, my name is Darla. It’s a pleasure to make your acquaint-

ance. I’m one of the five puppies in the Pawsitive Partners

Prison Program. They are called the Little

Rascals. I, however, will never admit to be-ing anything except a well-mannered young

lady. They tell me I’m a 3-month-old Walker Hound, but I beg to

differ. I am probably from a royal lineage of some sort. After all, just look at the regal elegance in this face! If you think you are worthy of my company in your

castle, just fill out an application at www.montyshome.org and I’ll have my staff call you. Or, you can call them at

910-262-3055. In the meantime, I’m enrolled in finishing school and you’ll be welcome to attend the celebration in

my honor mid-November. Until then, ta ta!

I am sponsored by Robyn Davis.

GREYHOUND FRIENDS OF NORTH CAROLINA

My name is Flash and I’m a 4-year-old boy. I do not like cats but I’m calm and have

very good manners. When I was getting my picture taken, I got to play with 3 different

toys. I couldn’t decide which one was better, so I just kept going back and forth from one to the other. The humans are constantly telling me how good I am and how good of a com-

panion I’m going to make. I can’t wait to meet my new family. Maybe you could be that family? Please contact

Brooks at 910-540-9644 for more information on adopting me or one of my friends. You can view other Greyhounds

looking for good homes at www.greyhoundfriends.com.

My name is Taku and I am one of the most beautiful red and white Border

Collie boys ever. I try not to let it go to my head though. I love people and toys and am not possessive with my

things or my food. I am a Border Collie though and I am a very smart, high

drive guy. I have a hard time with other dogs sometimes. I would like to join in

the fun, but I just don’t know how to play like them. I would enjoy getting to

know you but you will need to have experience with dogs, preferably Border Collies. I am 2 to 3-years-old, weigh 40 pounds and am neutered and vaccinated. Please visit the Carolina Border Collie Rescue website at www.cbcr.org, or call 919-682-6125 for more information about me and other

dogs currently available for adoption.

CAROLINA BORDER COLLIE RESCUE

Calling all families! I am sweet as Sugar (actually, that is my name) and I am

a rare find. I am a 3-year-old female mini-Schnauzer/Terrier Mix

who is looking for a family of my own. Why am I rare? Well, I am good

with children and am ac-tually looking for a few I can help tuck in at night. I am a

sturdy girl at 31 pounds, I am house-trained, and walk well on a leash. I like going for car rides with my family and I

like running and playing with kids in the backyard. I won’t be placed with children under 5, per rescue policy, but any others will be just fine. Please don't delay and fill out an application right away. I am vaccinated, spayed, micro-chipped, and heartworm negative, so I’m all ready to go

home. Go to www.schnauzerrescueofthecarolinas.org to fill out an application or call 910-264-8300 if you need one

faxed or emailed to you.

SCHNAUZER RESCUE OF THE CAROLINAS

My name is Sebastian and I’m a goofy, playful, loving Saint Ber-

nard. I’m 2-years-old and have a unique ability to make people smile. I also have a perfect

HEART-shape on my left side, in case it is not obvious how much love I have to offer! Apparently when I was little, I was kept in a crate that was too small for me to stand up in, which caused my hind legs to be-come deformed. I was named Sebastian for the crab in

The Little Mermaid because of the way I walk, but my awk-ward gait does not stop me from running and playing with gusto! I would love a home with kids to run and play and snuggle with. Please call 910-547-4823 or send an email

to [email protected] for adoption info. You can also visit www.capefearsaintbernardrescue.com.

CAPE FEAR SAINT BERNARD RESCUE

Happy Fall everyone! My name is Maylo. I'm a fun- loving 9-year-old Golden Retriever who has finally

figured out what it is like to be loved by people! This house and petting thing is

really awesome! Plus...I just LOVE tennis balls. I have

been treated for heartworms, have been neutered, and am

just waiting for my new forever home. I like other dogs and even walk pretty well on a leash! Don't let my age

fool you, as I am loads of fun with tennis balls. If you are interested in giving me a chance, please contact the

Cape Fear Golden Retriever Rescue at 910-791-5001 or log onto their site at www.cfgoldenrescue.com. I'm pa-

tiently waiting and am very excited to meet you!

CAROLINA BASSET HOUND RESCUE

Hi everyone, it's me Albert. I am about 5-years-old and I have been told that I am handsome enough to be a Prince. My foster Momma says that I am as sweet as I am good-looking. I have already been neutered and vaccinated. If you are looking for a fabulous companion, ask about me, Albert! To make me a member of your family please call 919-708-4247 or visit our website at www.cbhr.com for more information.

My name is Barley and I am a very, very, sweet fellow. I love people and other animals. I love going on walks, belly

rubs, hanging out at the park or beach. Where ever you want to go, I love to go, too!! I have one blue eye and one brown eye (so cool), four white paws and a brindle coat.

As you can see, I am bubbling with joy now that my heart-worm treatment is completed. Whoever adopts me will receive all the joy I have to give for giving me a second chance! Please contact 910-294-1589 to inquire about

fostering or adopting me.

Hello! My name is Jasper and I’ve been homeless for over four

years. I just can’t under-stand why? I’m such a wonderful boy and have so much love to give a lucky person or family. I’m 6-years-old and I

look like a mix between a miniature Husky and a

Shiba Inu. I love people and am very affection-ate. I’m house-trained, crate-trained, and am sweet and friendly to

dogs my size. I’d prefer a home without cats, small dogs or ferrets because they get me a little too excited. I’m very smart and I’ve been to obedience school so I’m quite familiar

with commands such as ‘sit’. Won’t you please consider adopting me? I’m a great boy! Please call the Sunburst

Foundation at 910-622-0011 to find out how we can meet.

I am sponsored by the Karl Miller family. Thanks!
