PawPrints Magazine's HOMELESS COVER MODEL

Minty fresh and ready to be kissed! That’s me, Bam Bam, relaxing here and on the cover with my toothbrush. My sister, Pebbles, and brother, Willie, are also searching for kitten

kisses. We hope that each of us will soon find forever

families to share our love. Our story began rather sadly: we were found sitting in the road by our mother’s lifeless body. She had been hit by a car. A compassionate lady took us

home, gave us good food and cuddled our troubles away. As

luck would have it, she also happened to be a foster mom for Adopt-An-ANGEL! We are 8-week-old darlings who love to be held and rubbed. We also love to play! Feathers,

pom pom balls and strings are just a few of our favorite toys.

We are in very good health and are excellent when it comes to using the litterbox. If you’d like to adopt one of us, please call Adopt-An-ANGEL at 910-392-0557. And before we go, we’d

like to thank the office of Dr. Brian Ford, DMD, for providing the toothbrush, our foster mom

for bringing us to the photo shoot, and Dick Parrott for capturing each of our precious personalities with

his camera. All that’s left now is for you to call!

Look how gorgeous I am!

My name is Peaches and I’m fairly new to the

shelter. You can’t tell by my smiling face, but my ear-lier life was a sad one. I was kept

outside all the time and gave birth to litter after litter of puppies. But all that will change,

I’ve been told! My friends say I’ll now

be someone’s faithful household companion and,

with my spay surgery all done, I’ll never have to worry about puppies again. I’m an 8-year-old, friendly and loving Golden Retriever mix. All I want is some TLC and a nice place to live. I lived in a foster home for a

while and am fully house-trained. I discovered air con-ditioning is a wonderful invention! I’m also vaccinated

and on heartworm prevention. I’m not asking for much, just kindness and good care. I’ll give you lots of love in return! Please call Paw’s Place at 910-845-7297 and

let’s get started on our new life together!

I am sponsored by Hank and Grace Harrington. Thank you!

URGENT, URGENT! I’M RUNNING OUT OF

TIME! How can this be? The officers are so worried -

they say they don’t understand how a

great dog like me has been overlooked for so

long. My name is Sampson (CM2367) and I’ve been living at Animal Control since

April 2010. At just 3 to 5-years-old, I lost my home when my owner moved away. I used to live happily with a small

dog and I’m an extremely friendly boy. I know how to sit on command and am house-trained. I walk well on a leash, I never bark, and I am eager to please. Even though I’m a Rottweiler mix, I think I’m a lap dog. If I can’t sit in your lap, I’ll lean against you in search of some head rubs. Can you see why everyone is so worried about my fate? I’m

quite a catch - it makes no sense that my time on earth should end here! If you’d like to meet me and give me a second chance at a new life, please call Pender County

Animal Control at 910-259-1349 or Officer Clewis at 910-279-3196. Shelter dogs always seem to know when they’ve been

saved, and I’ll know that you’re the one who saved me.

I am sponsored by Dineen Animal Hospital. Thank you!

Hi! I'm Bennie and I’m a 1-year-old, purebred American Staffy. I had

a really rough start in life and ended up home-

less. I'm neutered, up to date on my vaccina-

tions and just completed my heartworm treat-

ment!! So, I'm good to go! I've been through obedience training (a REAL plus!) and my

trainer says I'm a grrrreat boy who is eager to please. I

would love long walks with you but also just

want to be by your side. I get a little excited around other pets so I would do

best as an only dog. Won't you please consider adopting me? Please call 910-231-4275 today and please come

visit me soon!

I am sponsored by Francesca Slaughter in appreciation of Capeside Animal Hospital and

Van Dyne K9. Thank you!

I’m CoCo MoonPie and I’m a female Boxer mix who is 8-years-old. Six years ago, I was

found wandering on Highway 17 by a kind lady who scooped me up and rescued me. I’ve been living at Paw’s Place ever

since! Please, won’t someone take a

chance on me and bring me home? I’m a truly wonderful girl. I enjoy chew toys and

being around other dogs and people. I’m so very sweet - I love giving lots of

delicious doggie kisses. If you have a 6-foot fenced in yard and a cat-free home, I hereby promise to be your loyal, loving, lifetime buddy. To find out more, or if you need

driving directions, please call Paw’s Place at 910-845-7297. Let’s get to know one another, OK?

I am sponsored by Christine Watkins of

I have been so troubled

by my current situation and

I pray that you’ll come

save me. My name is

Colin and I’m a 5-year-old

boy. A hand-some lad like

me was picked up by Animal Con-

trol as a stray. Just like other

cats, I love head, neck

and chin rubs. I’m tall and lean and ready to go home with you. I am already neutered and vaccinated and crunchy catnip flavored treats are my favorite treat but feeling loved is what I crave. Please

come rescue me not to be your pet but to be your friend. I’ll give you unconditional love. If you would like to know

more about me or would like to inquire about the adoption process, please call Adopt-An-ANGEL at 910-392-0557.

I am sponsored by the Miss Avis Davis Fund, thanks!

I sure did have fun getting my photo taken! It took my mind off the sum-mer heat and I got to make some new

friends. Hi, my name is Jackson

(CM2675) and I’m a young boy who was

found as a stray. Animal Control saw me running loose by the side of the road in Burgaw. Boy, I

was so happy to be found! Now I’m

enduring the warm temperatures in my outside kennel as I await a new family.

It will be so good to get in an air-conditioned house one day! I’m a friendly, playful, happy fellow with caramel-colored fur. I’m probably mixed with Lab and I like to

please the humans around me. Everyone I meet is my friend and I don’t seem to mind the other dogs at the shel-ter. Would you please make my dream of a family come

true? Call Pender County Animal Control at 910-259-1349 or 910-279-3196 . I know we’d have a great life together!

I am sponsored by Nikki Keffer. "Happy Anniversary, Charly!"

By golly Miss Molly! Well, that's what

my foster momma calls me anyhow.

One thing you can't call me is slow as Molasses. I may

be 11-years-old but I can still bounce

around like a young'n and wag my tail like there's

no tomorrow. I can't help it, I'm just

a happy girl and love everyone!! I’m already spayed and vaccinated and

I’m good with children and other pets. I really need some Basset angels! You see, I have Cushing's Disease and need to take some expensive medicine twice a week. I also have to go for tests twice a year to make sure my

levels are under control. The tests can be pretty expen-sive and I would really love for you to be my angel! To make me a member of your family please call 919-708-

4247 or visit our website at www.cbhr.com.

I am sponsored by Phoenix Rising Agency, Inc.

My name is Willow and I am a 7-month-old Dane mix. My coat is a beautiful brindle

pattern. I currently live in a foster

home with 4 other dogs and I do bet-ter with more sub-missive ones. I

have never met a cat, though. I am crate-trained and

almost house-trained and I’m

fixed and vaccinated. My foster family had been getting me out and about to get me socialized and so far, I like people of all ages! I love attention and my tail never stops wag-ging! I also enjoy car rides! To give me a forever home, please contact the NC Chapter Mid-Atlantic Great Dane

Rescue League by calling Terri at 252-566-8934 or visiting their website at www.magdrl.org.

►My name is Annabelle.

I am about 2 to 3-years-old and

was once a stray. Now, I am crate-trained and almost completely

house-trained (about 98%). I am great with

smaller dogs and getting better

(less dominant) with larger dogs. I am not sure about cats. I am a bit shy, so small children would not be a good

match for me. I am spayed, up to date on shots and am starting my heartworm treatment. Special thanks to Cathy Ledbetter who paid for it! I have a quiet, stable personality

and I am a little Rottweiler who has been homeless for FAR TOO LONG! I am really a nice family dog.

►My name is Prince and I was found running loose and turned in to Animal Control. When no owners came forward and no one adopted me, I ran out of time. Fortunately, Adopt-An-

ANGEL had a spot and took me in. I had a huge, ugly wart on my head. Apparently, I tried to kiss a toad to marry a princess, but only got a wart instead. But then, my wart exploded and required emergency surgery and that's when Magda Ratajski

and other kind folks chipped in and paid my vet bill. Wow, what a story! I am neutered, heartworm negative, vacci-

nated and even had my wart taken care of. I am a big, lazy, loveable Hound who is very laid back. I do like to run for a

few minutes each day, but I lounge the rest of the day. I am house-trained and very, very sweet. Being homeless is ex-

hausting! I need to get to where I am going so I can just rest. I get along great with other cats and dogs and would

benefit from being in a home with another dog.

►My name is Sultan and I am a friendly young lad

who seeks a fun home. I love the hose and I love

water. I am neutered with shots and heartworm

negative. I get along great with other dogs, but they

haven't checked me around a cat yet. I am still a puppy at 8 to 10-months-old and I am one playful pup! My owners got me as a puppy when I was so cute, but then at 30 to 35 pounds now, they told the shelter I was too big for the apartment. I had to GO! Then, I ran out of time at the shelter. That would have been very sad for me because I

still have A LOT of life left to live.

◄Hi, my name is Jed. I'm a Black and Tan Coon-

hound and I weigh about 70

pounds. My foster family

says I'm a little goofy but I'm just

a Hound. I can be very playful but I do enjoy my naps. I have a doggy door I can use and spend most of my time snoozing on the back deck. For those of you out there

who are true Hound fans, I have a bark that would make any hound-parent proud. After a long hard day of snooz-ing, I like to retire to my kennel for a good night's sleep. If

you are interested in a true Hound, please contact my foster family by calling 910-754-3608. I am NOT a hunting

dog. I am used to being inside with a family.

◄“Luke, I am your father.” Hey, Star Wars Fans! My name is Luke and I

was adopted as a 12-week-old puppy from Adopt-An-ANGEL. My family

gave me away and then those people gave me away and so on and so on

and then those people took me to the Humane Society who gave Adopt-An-

ANGEL a courtesy call to let them know that I was there. Now, I’m al-most 2-years-old. In spite of my re-volving home situation, I am a very

friendly, easy-going guy. I am a stable and calm dog who needs stability in

my life for once. I know how to sit on command and I don’t pull on the leash or jump. I’m house-trained, neutered, up to date on shots and heartworm negative. I’m good with other dogs (having lived with one), kids and am playful with cats.

◄My name is Liberty and I became homeless over the 4th of July! Look, I am even wearing a flag bandana. I

am a loyal, devoted 8 to 10-month-old puppy who loves to romp and play. I am a

FUN BOY! Check out these cute, floppy ears. I am neu-tered, heartworm free and

have been vaccinated. Be-ing homeless in an animal shelter and hearing fire-works explode is pretty

scary. Please adopt me so I can watch them on TV in a

warm, cozy home next year curled up next to you.

Page 10: PawPrints Magazine August 2010

Hi, my name is Lester and I’m

hoping to find my rightful place as part

of a loving family. Just keep reading

and you’ll see why! First of all, I’m house-

trained. You won’t have to worry about accidents on the car-pet with me around. Secondly, I’m great

with children. I used to live with a 4-year-old and we had no

problems at all. Third, I’m obedient.

Just look at my photo! I can sit on command, and I’ll gladly shake hands, or paws, as well. Fourth, I just love other dogs! I have a

good time playing with them. Fifth, I’m a great companion. I love to go for rides in the car, I have webbed feet and enjoy playing in the water (ocean or pool) and I will also sleep in bed with you, if it’s allowed. Sixth, I’m in great

health. I am neutered, vaccinated and on heartworm pre-vention. At just 1-year-old, I’m a male Lab mix who would make a lifetime of wonderful memories with you. Please call the New Hanover Humane Society at 910-763-6692

and they’ll be glad to tell you more!

I am sponsored by Levi Donovan. Please consider adoption.

◄How did a gorgeous and loving girl like me end up as a stray? I’m even extra-special as I have extra toes on my front paws. A famous author, Ernest Hemingway, loved cats like me! I’m Baby (27629), a 3-year-old who loves to be touched and rubbed. I have orange and white fur, and I’m as friendly as can be to all I meet. I’ll even put my paw through the cage as though to shake your hand. Adopt me!

►Any Golden Retriever fans out there? My name is Brayson (28059) and I may not be full-blooded but I’m awfully close! It would be hard to find a

more suitable companion for your family than me. I’m so even-tempered

and friendly, even if I’ve just met you for the first time. The ladies from

PawPrints got me to sit and lay down on com-mand and I took treats

so very gently from their fingers. I’m not at all

hyper, and never once attempted to jump up on humans, even though they’d taken me from my kennel into the

playroom. I will even sit by the door and wait for you to put on my leash. I walk well on the leash, too! I’m just 2-years-old and was found as a stray. Someone will be so

lucky to adopt me, and I hope that it is you.

◄It’s so sad when own-ers move away and leave their companions behind. That’s what happened to me. My name is Miko (27410) and I’m a 6-year-old boy who is already neutered, vaccinated and litterbox-trained. You won’t have to do anything except cuddle on the couch with me! I’m very gentle, sweet and loving and I am so happy to see humans at my cage door. Please come visit me!

◄Hello! My name is Joe Joe (26230) and I’m a very happy boy

who loves meeting new people. No one can quite figure out what

breeds I’m mixed with, but I’m gorgeous! My fur is a creamy blonde and my brown eyes will

melt your heart. I’m such a sweet boy, only 8-months-old. When I lay down, I stretch my

back legs out, like Superman when he’s

flying. It’s so cute! I hope you’ll give me the chance to be someone’s best friend. It’s all I’m hoping for.

►I’m an American Eskimo dog and my

name is Kelly (27049). You won’t believe how

talented and smart I am. I can ‘high five’ with my paw, as well as shake

hands and sit on command. And

beautiful? Let’s just say folks love to gaze at me with my fluffy black fur and soft brown eyes. I love getting attention, especially when the

attention leads to body massages. I take treats gently, I’m friendly to everyone and am just 2-years-old. I’ll be

a great friend and companion, so hurry on over!

◄I’ve got some Boxer love headed your way! My name is

Sienna (28161) and I’m a 6-month-old

Boxer mix puppy girl who is happy, playful and full of joy. You can’t be with me for more than two sec-

onds without smiling. I love belly rubs and am excellent when it comes to sitting on command. (Check out my photo if you

don’t believe me.) I’m good with other dogs and friendly to all the people I meet. Take me into the playroom and fall in love!

Page 12: PawPrints Magazine August 2010

I may not be able to sing like Frank Sinatra, but I’m full of

personality and charisma, just

like him! That’s how I got my

name, Frankie. I’m a 4-year-old Chihuahua/Feist

mix who was surrendered to Animal Control when my owner could no longer take care of me. Pender County

Humane Society has taken me in

and I’m charming everyone with my adorable, loving personality. I’m under 15 pounds and am house-

trained, leash-trained, neutered, vaccinated, and on heartworm prevention. Sounds like everything’s al-

ready taken care of, so all you have to do is enjoy me! I get along well with other dogs and pay cats no mind. I just know my forever family is waiting out there for me somewhere, so how about giving the shelter a call?

The phone number is 910-259-7022. Don’t make me wait!

I am sponsored by Phoenix Rising Agency, Inc.

Thank you!

Hi, my name is Joey and the other little guy is Mikey. We're two young kittens who were found separately and were all by ourselves. I'm the orange Tabby and am about 3-months-old. Mikey is a brownish/black kitten and he's

about a month younger than me. We're both up to date on our shots and

neutered. We were tested for Feline Leuke-mia and FIV and were

both negative. We love to play and get along great with other cats.

We're so happy to be in a foster home. It was really tough trying to

survive out there on our own. What we'd really love is to have a home

and family to call our own. We're both pretty independent so we don't need to be

adopted together. Please call 910-271-3101 for more infor-mation on how to adopt one or both of us.

We are sponsored by Pet Friends of Duplin County.

I Belong To Christine Pfohl.

Billie was stolen on May 5th, 10:30am, by a woman exiting the Crest Building on

Converse Drive, probably from an appointment at Cape Fear Pediatrics or Kuzma Dentistry. Billie wore ID. She is a Maltese mix, 8-months-old,

13 pounds. I kept her in a puppy cut; untrimmed she has a scruffy beard. She is white with one distinctive black ear. Billie was a gift from my daughter, a veterinarian who rescued and healed

her, spayed and microchipped her, and sent her to me for Mother's Day.

If you have any information, even anonymous,

please call me at 910-515-3737.

I’m all dressed up for my photo!

Don’t you think I’m the prettiest

Rottweiler you’ve ever seen? I’m

Mama Roxy and I’m so happy to

meet you. A few months ago, I

wandered up to Paw’s Place in

sad shape. I had a condition where the eyelids turned inward, irritating

the eyes. My new friends got me to the doctor and he corrected the

problem with surgery. Now I’m feeling great and batting my eyes at everyone! I’m a 6-year-old girl who is

spayed, vaccinated and on heartworm prevention. I’m extremely gentle and good with children. At 70 pounds, I

have a very loving personality and I’m also house-trained. It would be so wonderful to share my life with a nice family - how about yours? Please call Paw’s Place

at 910-845-7297. They’ll be happy to tell you what a beloved companion I would be!

I am sponsored by Top Toad in the Cotton Exchange

Hi, I’m Attikus! I’m 2-years-old and weigh

in at just about 100 pounds. I’m the defini-tion of “gentle giant”. Since I’m still young, I love to play, but I also know when to relax.

Fetch with my basket-ball is my favorite game and yes, I actually bring

the ball back. I also love to play with my foster siblings, but they don’t under-stand fetch like I do. Another of my favorite things to do is ride in the car. My foster parents have an 11-year-old

son and I like sleeping on the floor near him when he plays in his room. I am not a barker which everyone here loves. I am crate-trained, house-trained and am working on walking on a leash. My foster mom says that I’m in-

credibly smart since I have learned the household routine and basic commands with very little work. I know how to sit and lay down on command and will sit and wait for my breakfast and dinner. I will also give you my paw if you give me a treat. My favorite treats are ice cubes, Kongs with peanut butter or rawhides. I live with a cat right now

and when it comes to her, I don’t have a strong prey drive. I will come up and sniff her but don’t usually chase her, maybe that is because she let me know on day one

that she’s boss. My foster mom says that I’m a great dog and there is nothing she would change about me. I will be the perfect addition to your family! If you’d like more information or to see other pictures of me, please visit www.nobleshepherdrescue.com or call 910-431-6294.

I am sponsored by www.TheKarmaFund.org, thanks!

Where Is She Now? Chelsea, featured in June 2009

“She was in the back of the crowd, sitting there calmly, while everyone else was jockeying for position,” recalls John Garner of the day he and his family met Chelsea. “I liked the fact that she was at peace.” 3-month-old Chelsea was introduced to her future family at an adoption fair held by Tails U Win. Sur-rounded by other puppies, she captured the family’s attention, just as she had when they first noticed her in the pages of PawPrints. “She was so cute and looked like a German Shepherd,” says Kristin Garner. “She had a good disposition, and was very soft and cuddly. It just felt right when we held her.” The good feelings continued after signing the adoption papers and bringing her home. “She was house-trained in a day or two,” says John. “Either Tails U Win did a great job with her, or she was just ready,” adds Kristin. “Things couldn’t have been better.” Chelsea had left her furry friends behind, but she found two new playmates in the forms of brother Levi, 11, and sister Tori, 9. “Tori treated her like a doll,” recalls Kristin, “holding and cuddling and carrying her around. Levi loves her as a great companion and today, at 53 pounds, she’s

just the right size for him.” “I like wrestling with her the best,” says Levi. “But it has to be inside because if she goes out-doors, she runs away and chases squirrels.” Kristin is amazed and thankful by how well Chel-sea behaves around the children. “She tolerates everything they do. Noth-ing bothers her; she doesn’t bat an eye when they move her arms or legs or pull at her. She’s just a great fam-ily dog.” The Garner’s have en-joyed taking Chelsea with them on camping excur-

sions and trips to the beach. “Our first visit to the ocean was an adventure,” says Kristin. From the safety of the family boat, Chelsea “barked at the waves as if she could conquer them.” And although she wasn’t quite as brave when it came time to en-ter the water, she allowed Levi to push her across the surface on a surfboard. “Now,” says Kris-tin, “she loves the ocean. We have a hard time getting her back on the boat to go home.” Chelsea also has fun in smaller bodies of water. “She loves to swim in the yuckiest, nastiest ponds there are,” says Kristin. “The dirtier the better, in her mind.” In fact, at least five days a week, Chelsea and Kris-tin go for morning walks and runs, which culmi-nate with Chelsea jump-ing into an algae-filled pond. “She comes out with it dripping off her,” laughs Kristin. “She doesn’t care. We just hose her down.” Other Chelsea-approved activities are digging for frogs, giving kisses, licking ears, catching treats in the air and carrying towels around the house, “as if she was Linus from Charlie Brown,” says Kristin. “She’s just brought a lot of fun to our household and a lot of love. She’s such a good friend and companion. We’re very happy with her.”

8-week-old Chelsea arrived for the PawPrints cover shoot in June 2009. She appeared on page two

with three other sisters.

Today, at almost 1½-years- old, Chelsea enjoys life with

the Garner family: Dad John, Mom Kristin, and

kids Levi, 11, and Tori, 9.

Chelsea cuddles with Levi (top) and has some face-licking fun

with Levi and sister Tori (bottom).

Chelsea (right) was reunited with littermate Clara (left) in March 2010. Clara, a former PawPrints cover model, had been featured in January 2010’s “Where Is She Now?” After read-ing the article, Kristin contacted Clara’s family and a playdate

was arranged, setting the stage for a joyous reunion.

CAT: Cat Adoption Team

◄Looking for a Lap Cat? Well, just say the word, and I’ll warm your lap right on up. My name is Alice and I’m a 1-year-old girl who was found at Animal Control, running out of time. I had three kittens with me so Cat Adoption Team took us all home with them. I’m a very sweet orange and white girl who loves to be held and kissed. I’m good with children and other cats and have a friendly, playful nature. Let’s go home today!

►Hello! I’m Cricket, the fluffy black girl kitten, and this is

my brother, Tiger. He’s

a Tabby! We are just 8-weeks-old and cute as buttons. My foster mom says we would be excellent family companions because

we are so used to being touched and held. Our feet have rarely touched the ground between her two girls and the

neighborhood children. We are friendly, curious and playful and can be adopted together or separately. Hurry!

◄Hi there, my name is Tabitha! I’m a very beautiful girl, and quite young at 1½-years-old. Do you see those two kittens pictured above me? Those are my children! We were rescued from a shelter where we were running out of time. I’m a very loving girl, friendly to other cats as well as human children, and I would be an excellent family companion. If you pick me, I promise to make you happy.

◄You know how some cats like to hide under the bed or stay off to

themselves? NOT ME! My name is Cassie and I’m a very social, friendly girl. I’ll make myself right at home with any family and any situation. I’m

comfortable around men, women, children, dogs

and cats. I’m an affectionate talker who loves to be held. I will even give kisses! I am spayed, vaccinated and litterbox-trained. At just

8-months-old, I’m looking forward to a future with you!

►Please don’t worry about

interrupting me while I’m eating lunch - I’d much

rather talk to you. You see, I’m feeling a

little lonely. My name is Kenzie and my sister

was just adopted. I’m alone in my cage and wondering when a family will decide to love me. I’m a 10-week-old female Tabby who is very sweet and playful. I love to talk and am a great companion. I’d be

great in a house full of kids, or with adults only. I’m also good with other cats. Come on out to see me, I’m quite adorable!

◄Hello friends! While they’re cleaning my

cage, I get to run around on the floor and meet

new people like you. I’m currently watching a

peacock feather while they take my photo. I even heard them say that I was extremely

photogenic and adorable. What do you

think? My name is Kasey and I’m a 12-week-old girl who is social, outgoing and

highly affectionate. I’m also healthy, litterbox-trained and friendly to kids and other cats. Let’s get together soon!

Page 16: PawPrints Magazine August 2010

Hi there, my name is Silly Girl! If

you’re wondering how I got my

name, you need to come meet me. Just spend a few moments watch-ing me play, skip around the room, chase after toys,

and climb into your lap and you’ll say, “Oh, you silly girl!” Then you’ll

rain kisses all over my precious face. At just 6-months of age, I’m a Lab/Terrier mix young-ster who is look-ing for a forever

home. I get along great with other dogs and am already spayed, vaccinated and house-trained. I have a delightful personality and I sure do love playing with all the toys they have here. Still, I’d much rather leave the toys behind and go home with you. Do you have a fenced-in yard where we

can play games? Please call Pender County Humane Society at 910-259-7022 and tell them I’m the one

you’ve been looking for!

I am sponsored by CarolinaBeachForSale.com in honor of Karen and Norm Conners. Thank you!

Meow there! My name is Sweetie because I'm one of the sweetest cats you'll ever

meet. I'm about 1-year-old,

spayed, current on my shots, and litterbox-trained.

I'm extremely affectionate and

love to be cuddled. I also get along great with the other kitties in the playroom.

Speaking of the playroom, you

should really come visit! It’s a cage-less environment, which means that we felines are always free to move about. You can come right on in and sit among us!

You’ll find us eating, napping, cuddling and playing. It’s a cat lover’s paradise! You can pet me for a while and get to know me. I’m sure you’ll soon understand how I got my name. Now don’t forget - if you are looking for a feline playmate and best friend, you’ve come to the right place. Call Pender County Humane Society at 910-259-

7022 and tell them you’re coming over!

I am sponsored by WrightsvilleBeachForSale.com in honor of Ray Riordan and Ellen Koch. Thank you!

Cat Tails

◄Who would name such a beautiful cat Fluffy? It’s like naming a dog Fido. Don’t you think I deserve some-thing a little more elegant?

After all, I am a lovely Calico with luxurious long hair that I love to have brushed. I am

very shy so I need someone with a quiet home who will give me a little time to adjust. Would you please be that kind

soul with a heart of gold and some patience?

◄Heyyyy Fonzie? Remem-ber me? I am Richie’s little

sister, Joanie. I am a beauti-ful 3-year-old female kitty with

fur as smooth as a leather jacket. I have spent the last few months in a real foster

home so I am quite adept at how to behave in a house. I

would be happy to share your couch with you and watch episodes of “Happy Days.” I am friends with everyone so if

you already have one kitten, I will fit in nicely.

◄A boy named Marion. Won’t you please come adopt me and give me a

real manly name? I am one of the most affectionate kitties you’ll ever meet. I

love to play but once I’m tired, I want to snuggle. So now you know everything about me. Take me home and you can tell me all about

you. You see, you get a therapist for free!

►Calico kitties are always the first ones to be adopted so why am I still here? As

you can see I am a beautiful pastel Calico. My name is Shana and I am only 10-

months-old. I am the only girl in a room of rowdy boys and let me tell you they don’t get over on me. I am very sweet, as every girl should be, and l love attention, just like every girl. If you take me home I will snuggle with you forever!

►Oh Poppycock! That’s what all the

other kitties say to me! With a name like

Poppy you better be cute and, well, I must say that I am. I’m a lovely white kitty with

gray spots on my head. Everyone wants a

white cat so why am I still here looking for a home? I am still a youngster at just 1-year-old and very friendly, too.

►I am still waiting for my ship to come in. My

name is Sinbad and as you might have guessed,

I am a sailor without a boat. With all of you peo-

ple living by the sea, doesn’t one of you have a

ship for me? I need a little time to adjust as I am a bit shy, but once we get used

to each other everything will be cool.

Kittens, Kittens, Kittens! It’s kitten season and we’ll have lots of beautiful ones looking for homes.

There are too many to list, and by the time the magazine comes out, those we had pictures of will be adopted and new ones will be here to replace them. So visit our webpage at cattails.org to see the current pictures of those that are available.

◄Maybe if they named me A-Rod instead of Rodney I would get noticed? That

would have made me one of the world famous Yankees and everyone would know

me! As you can see I am a lovely orange Tabby and

just a teenager at 9-months-old. I do have one very cute habit - if you pick me up, I’ll

wrap my paws around your neck and hold on. I don’t ever want to be put down! Come visit me and see for yourself!

►Why am I in this maga-zine? What does a seal

point Siamese have to do to get adopted? Usually, we are the first to go! I

had a home but my owner got sick and couldn’t keep me. I am crossing off the

days on the calendar until I am in a house where I

need to be. I am only 4-years-old, so I have plenty of time to spend with you. Come ask for Megan or just ask for the

seal point and say hello. You’ll fall in love, I guarantee!

Page 18: PawPrints Magazine August 2010

My name is Missy. I’m a domestic long-haired mix who is 4-months-old. I

need a loving home with someone who loves cats. I lived in a house after I was born, but my owners aban-doned me in the wild and

left me to fend for myself. I was lost and starving before I was found by my current caretakers who love ani-mals. I weighed about a pound and was in terrible

shape. My new caregivers fed me and brought me

back to health. They took me to a vet to have me

spayed and I am now recovering from my surgery. I was also treated for fleas, including a 6-month flea manage-

ment shot, and also am now protected from Rabies. I love my new human friends but I am not allowed in the house. This home already has one older cat and a dog who don’t seem to like me. Being outside all the time is scary, espe-cially at night with wild animals coming through the yard. I

would like very much if someone who loves cats would adopt me so I could be a house cat again - although I am beginning to like wandering in the yard and napping under bushes. I am staying close to the house though and I am not declawed. I don't want to be lost, alone and hungry

again. I am very friendly and love attention. Please adopt me and make me part of a family again. To find out how to make that happen, please call 910-790-5855. Thank you!

◄My name is Hagert (A241146) and I’m a calm Harrier mix who is just 4-years-old. I was picked up as a stray but it’s obvi-ous that I was once very much loved. I know how to “sit” on command, I take treats gently from your fingers, and I’m food (and praise) motivated so I’m highly trainable. I promise to be your bestest friend and loyal companion if you’ll just do the right thing and adopt me.

◄You’re not going to believe this but I was picked up by

Animal Control as a stray. I’m Cedrick The Entertainer

(A240816) and I’m a 2-year-old Basset mix. I’m a very happy boy who loves, and I mean loves, tennis balls. If

you sit and watch me play with a tennis ball, I guarantee that you will giggle at least once. Seriously, I’m that good of an entertainer! I’ll even use my

front paws to kick the ball around the room. I’m also charming and smart, too! I

have good manners and I know how to “sit” on command. I’ve already been neutered so I’m ready to go home now! I’m a loving boy who would love the chance to get to know you.

So how about it? Would you be my someone special?

►I’m looking for someone who likes to cuddle with cats. My name is Cena

(A239715) and I love snuggling and being

rubbed. I’m 2-years-old and already neutered. My owner moved and left me

behind. I enjoy having conversations, rubbing against legs and rolling

around on the floor. Oh, and I love catnip flavored

treats! Won’t you hurry to the shelter and save a

sweet boy like me?

►Fabulous Dog Alert! My name is Stanley

(A241423) and just wait until you hear about all of my wonderful qualities! I’m a very smart boy, I give sweet kisses, I’m

good on a leash, I’m not overly hyper, I love being with people, I enjoy sitting

or laying by your feet, I know how to sit, shake and lay down on com-

mand, I don’t jump up on you, I’m eager to please, and I’m highly trainable. At just 1½-years of age, I have truly perfected the art of

friendship...if only I had a friend right now. I’ve been neu-tered and I’m told that I’m a Hound and Boxer mix. You don’t want to miss out on the opportunity to adopt me. I’m the kind of dog who will definitely enrich your life!

◄Hi, there. I’m an adventurous acrobat named Smudge (A240657). I love to play with feathers - pouncing on them or leaping into the air to play with one. I was found as a stray at Cape Fear Community College. I knew I would find a smart person there who would get me to safety. I’m very gor-geous and have dark, silvery grey fur. Come out and adopt me and let me entertain you!

►Are you looking for a super friendly

declawed cat? My name is Ryan

(A240500) and I’ve had all four of my

paws declawed (not by choice, but nothing

I can do about that now.) I’m a 2-year-

old, neutered boy who is perfect in so many ways. I’m happy and

content and I will push my noggin’ into your hand for some

loving. I love to give and receive love!

Page 20: PawPrints Magazine August 2010

URGENT, URGENT! I’M RUNNING OUT OF

TIME!

It’s sad to be at Animal Control, but it’s even sadder when you’re an older girl like me. I have been enduring

the summer heat wave for three months now.

My name is Dollie Mae (CF2299) and I’m a

Walker Hound girl who actually arrived at the

shelter in March. Would you like to know why I’m here? I’ll tell

you - my former owner dropped me off, telling the officers that I was “too old to

hunt.” Well, although he was wrong in thinking that I’m dis-posable, he was right about one thing: I don’t want to hunt

anymore. I want to curl up on the couch, be kissed, get hugs, nibble on treats, enjoy air conditioning and live inside the house. In short, I want to be a real member of some-one’s family. Please don’t let my dreams end here! You

could be the first person to show me how it feels to truly be loved. Please call Pender County Animal Control at

910-259-1349 or Officer Clewis at 910-279-3196. Time is running out...and I still have SO much love to give.

I am sponsored by Kathy Lanio. Thank you!

Hey, everybody! My name is Beau (CM2569) and I’m a very handsome Border Collie mix. As you can see

from my smile, I’m a social, friendly fellow who never meets a stranger. So why on earth am I at Animal

Control? It’s one of those myster-ies, I guess. At

just 2 to 3-years-old, I came to the

shelter feeling kinda itchy. The

nice folks here took me to the vet and she shaved me down. (That’s why you can see my skin in my photo.) It

turned out I just needed some ointment and now I’m cured! Soon my hair will grow back and I’ll be even

more gorgeous. I love all the people I meet and the vet said I behaved beautifully while under her care. I also

get along fabulously with other dogs. Would you please come meet me? Pender County Animal Control can be reached at 910-259-1349 or 910-279-3196. Tell them

you’re interested in getting to know me better!

I am sponsored by the Keffer family: Dixie, Luke, Kira, Nikki and Charly.

◄My adorable face will brighten your life every day! My name is J.J. and I’m a very small male Beagle,

just 14 pounds. I am delightful, playful, active

and friendly. Since coming to the shelter, I’ve become good buddies with Riley,

who is pictured next to me. We romp in the yard

together. I want you to know this in case you

already have a dog who might need a friend like me. I am house-trained, excellent with children,

neutered and vaccinated. Would you please come meet me? You’ll be hooked!

◄If you like chocolate, you’ll love me! I’m a Chocolate Lab mix

with Hershey-colored fur and a personality that is just as sweet!

My name is Riley and I’m a 35 pound,

6-month-old girl who is very anxious to please. Training me to do stuff should be a fairly easy

job! I already know how to melt hearts,

and that’s a good start. I am used to living

indoors and playing outside. I’ve had a

great time playing with my buddy, J.J., the Beagle. He’s pictured on this page.

Does your doggie need a pal like me?

◄It’s not often that you see a cat who can walk on two

legs, right? OK, I guess I should admit that I am

actually trying to reach a feather held just above my head. But I think balancing on two legs is

pretty talented, too! Hi there, my name is

Buster and I’m a 1-year-old boy who is trying to

make the best of life in a shelter.

I play with the other cats and have found some toys that keep me entertained. Still, I’d be very happy to

wave goodbye if it meant I was going home with you! I am already neutered, vaccinated and litterbox-trained. I love to be touched and kissed and will be glad to show you what an affectionate kitty I am. Please visit, ok?

◄Hello there! My name is Ivey and I’d dearly love to be your girl. I was found as a stray by some very

kind people who took me in. They already had several dogs so

they couldn’t keep me. Now I’m watching

everyone who enters the shelter, hoping they’ll be the one to

take me home! I’m a 1-year-old Lab mix who weighs in at 56 pounds. I get along

great with other dogs and I also enjoy being

around children. I’m used to playing in a fenced-in yard and I can sit on command, as you can see. Adopt me!

fun in your backyard! I’m a Terrier mix who is great with children and other dogs (but no cats, please.) I’m also

spayed, vaccinated, and on monthly heartworm prevention. I’ve been waiting at SOAR for a forever family to come along for what seems like...well, forever! Won’t

Can you hear me purring? My name is Rosie and I’m an extremely affectionate kitten who is looking for a

good home. I was brought to Pender County Humane Society by a nice lady who had been feeding me when I was a stray hanging out by a storage unit. I get

along great with the other kitties at the shelter and I love getting attention from humans! I'm spayed, cur-rent on vaccinations, litter-box- trained and under 1-

year-old. I’d be so grateful to have a furever home! Come to the shelter and get to know me. It’s a cage-less envi-ronment, so you can play with me and watch me interact

◄Hello! My name is Petey and I’m a 28 pound Jack Russell mix who has been through some sad

times. I used to have a wonderful home but

my owner became very ill and I was

brought to the shelter. I sure do hope to be part of another loving

family soon! I’m house-trained,

neutered, and friendly to all the humans

(including kids) I meet! I’d prefer to be the only other dog in the household and am leash-trained. I’m 12-years-young and am active and in great health. Let’s meet! ►All dressed up and

easy-going girl and I like getting attention. Folks tell me I’m awesome and that I have NO issues. I’ll play with anyone (except cats, they get me a little too ex-

I’ve been at Paw’s Place for such a long time!

►I’m a small Hound - just 30 pounds - and I was

found as a stray in South Carolina. My name is Juliet and I’m a sweet,

gentle, 1-year-old girl who would love to live in a quiet

home with my very own Romeo. I play extremely well with other dogs and enjoy taking walks. I’m

looking for a person or fam-ily with a fenced-yard and a desire to share their life

with a good-natured girl like me. I’m already spayed, vaccinated and on heartworm pre-vention. How about giving this Juliet a very happy ending?

Hi y’all! My name is Bessie from the gang here at the

Pawsitive Partners Prison Program. I’m a 6-month-old Terrier mix. And you wouldn’t be-lieve how much I’ve learned. I think my strong point is the fact I

like to learn. When I’m not hard at work becoming a super pup (soon to be a super big dog), I’m playing

tug. Which my trainer says is work which I think is a plus. Because I love doing it and it’s fun. So if you’re looking for a super pup who listens, then I’m the one. For more information about me, please visit the web-

site at www.montyshome.org, send an email to [email protected] or call 910-262-3055.

Hello! My name is Jed and I’m a yellow and white 1-year-old Lab/

Husky mix. I’m presently en-rolled in the Pawsitive Partners Prison Program learning all the

skills to make me a better canine companion. I’ll let you in on a

little secret, but don’t mention it to my trainer. I’m not much on this extra-education stuff; but I sure would love to lavish you with plenty of kisses up on a

front porch or backyard, and if needed even send out an alarm-ing bark at a stranger. The next

nine weeks are going to be a serious challenge for me, but I

promise you I will get through it: just be waiting for me, as I’m eager to be with you. Oh! By the way, my good looks aren’t

the only thing this country canine has going for him. I’m crate-trained and up to date on all my shots. So! If you read

between the lines, I’m one of a kind. For more info, visit www.montyshome.org, email [email protected] or call

Hi, my name is Piper. I'm an American Staf-fordshire Terrier and

Blue Ridge Boxer Rescue saved me when I was puppy. Someone had beat

me up pretty bad and I had to have tubes in

a big gash on my forehead so I wouldn't get an infection. As you can see from my picture, I'm all healed

up. I'm 1-year-old now and healthy as a horse. I've had all my shots, and gotten the big snip, so I'm ready to go. I have a lot of

energy and love to play. I'm looking for a foster home or my forever family. If you are active and would love a goofy

boy like me, then please contact the nice people at Blue Ridge Boxer Rescue. Visit their website to learn more information about me or other dogs needing homes at

www.blueridgeboxerrescue.com, call Sonya at 864-419-5198 or email [email protected].

I am sponsored by Pine Valley Animal Hospital in

memory of Jake Gregorio, who was loved by so many.

There are LOTS of puppies at Pender County Animal Con-trol. Help - we need homes! You are looking at two of the

little darlings. My name is Scout and this is my sister,

Steffy. We are happy, playful pups who put a smile on eve-ryone’s face. Just cuddle us and kiss us and we’re con-

tent! Our momma wandered up to someone’s house and proceeded to give birth in

their yard. The nice people there decided to spay her and keep her as their own, so now

we’re searching for our for-ever families. There are

seven of us total (six girls and one boy) and we are 6 to

8-weeks-old. We’re thought to be Beagle/Hound mixes. Have you been aching for

some puppy love? You’re in luck because we’re waiting! Come on over and meet us - we’re incredibly cute and fun to watch. Our ID numbers

are CF2664, CF2665, CF2666, CF2668, CF2669, CM2658 and CF22703 and we are staying at Pender County Ani-

mal Control’s animal shelter. To find out more, or for driv-ing directions, please call 910-259-1349 or 910-279-3196.

Our sweet faces will lift your spirits!

We are sponsored in appreciation of everyone who has rescued a homeless animal.

All Aboard! Captain here! I'm a very sweet

and loving little 1 to 2-year-old Golden Re-

triever mix who is house-trained and likes other dogs. I love to go for

walks and am good on a leash. I love being with

my foster family and watching TV (yes, I really do watch TV), AND I love to play ball my way, which

means I can chase the ball, but you have to re-trieve it. I don't see the

point in doing that myself. I was really shy when I was first pulled from the shel-ter, but I'm really coming out of my shell and working on being the social butterfly that I know I can be. If you are interested in me, please contact the Cape

Fear Golden Retriever Rescue at 910-791-5001 or log onto their site at www.cfgoldenrescue.com.

For my dog-loving friend, Jean: You're the best. Thank you, from your sister Iowan.

Everybody loves me! But who will be the lucky one to take me

home? My name is Leo (FM2377) and I’m a fabulous boy. I have beautiful orange

and white fur and I just LOVE to be held. I lost my home due to this darn economy. My owner had to move into a camper and it just wasn’t a safe place for me to be. Now I’m at Animal Con-trol, praying for better luck to come my way. I am already

neutered and litterbox-trained. I’m used to living indoors and

I’m friendly to everyone I meet. Shhh, don’t spread it around,

but I’ve been acting quite motherly to some kittens who share a cage with me. I put my arm around them and groom their fur with my tongue. They love it and so do I. So if you have fe-

lines, I’m sure we’d get along just fine. Please come meet me! Call Pender County Animal Control at 910-259-1349 or 910-279-3196 and let’s get started on our bright, happy future.

I am sponsored by the Keffer family: Dixie, Luke, Kira,

Nikki and Charly.

I’m a blue-eyed, declawed Ragdoll mix and I’m

searching for a home! Could your lap be the one I

curl up in? My name is Sissy and I’ve got quite a story to tell. It began in 2006 when someone

dropped me at the door of Needham Animal Hospital. A microchip was found and

it was determined that I was one of the many ani-mal victims of Hurricane

Katrina. My former family was located, but they were unable to take me back. My

friends at the hospital found me new families - twice - but I was returned each time for reasons that were no fault of my own. Now I’m on the search once more! I am an af-

fectionate sweetheart who loves to be held. I will purr and sit on your shoulder or lap all day if you’d let me. I enjoy being brushed and, at 11-years-old, I still enjoy playing

with toys. I’m very mobile and active and have so many wonderful memories to make with some lucky human. I have been diagnosed with IBD, which is a very manage-able gastrointestinal condition. All I need is a liquid medi-cation and a special food that is easily purchased. The

staff at Needham would be happy to tell you more. They say I’m a quiet, laid-back girl who would bring a lot of joy

into someone’s life. To adopt me, call 910-799-2970.

I am sponsored in memory of Stephanie Heath whose short life was lived to the fullest...laughing, dancing

and caring for her friends - human and animal.

URGENT, URGENT! We Need to Find Homes Soon!

Hi there, my name is Page and this is my best friend Coal. We’ve lived in a

home together for many years and are so sad to be searching for a new place to lay our heads. It would be

wonderful to be adopted together, but we can be adopted separately if we

each go to a loving home. I’m an 8 to 9-year-old female Shepherd mix and I’m a 95 pound teddy bear. Coal is an 8-year-old male Lab mix with an easy smile and a loving personality. We are house-trained, obedient and eager to please. We love going for walks, playing with children above

the age of six and we have lived har-moniously with a cat. We would be great companions for anyone. We are spayed/neutered, up to date on vaccinations and on heartworm pre-vention. Because we’ve lived in a home all our lives, we have great house manners and are well-adjusted, social,

friendly dogs. Would you please consider adopting one of us? Or perhaps both? We promise to give you so much love and so much companionship! You’ll never be lonely again. Please call the Sunburst Foundation at 910-622-0011 or email [email protected] for more

info. Hope to meet you soon!

Compassionate Cat Lover Needed Desperately!

Our lives have suddenly become very sad… for years we were part of a loving home, but then everything changed. My name is Claire and I’m 16-years-old. My sister, Rachel, is

16-years-old, too. Our best buddy, Gracie, is a youngster in comparison at 10-years of age. We three shared a life together - a very happy, comfortable one. Then our elderly owner be-came ill and couldn’t take care of us. There was no one else to take us in and we were

brought to Southport Oak Island Animal Rescue (SOAR.) It’s quite a change to go from a comfy

home with familiar sights and sounds to the strange surroundings of an animal shel-ter. The shelter manager says we seem depressed, we hardly move and have be-wildered looks on our faces. Isn’t it sad that, at our advanced age, we have no spe-

cial person to love us? We all enjoy being held and will snuggle up in your arms. We can’t get enough kisses and are so happy to receive attention. We appear to be

in good health and are spayed, vaccinated and litterbox-trained. We’d love to be adopted into one family. If that’s not possible, it would be ideal if at least Rachel

and I could arrive at our new home together since we have never been apart. Gra-cie’s loveable personality would bring joy to her new family. Please spread the word about us to your friends! We three deserve the dignity of a peaceful senior life and we hope there is someone out there who will take us into their heart. Call SOAR at

910-457-6340 to find out how you can meet us.

We are sponsored in loving memory of Speckles.

Are You An Educated Cat Lover? Please Read

About Me...

My name is Rusty and I’m a declawed boy who is ex-

tremely affectionate. Nothing makes me happier than cud-dling in someone’s lap or be-

ing held in their arms. But something just happened and

it caused me to lose my home. You see, I was diag-nosed with FIV. That’s why I asked if you’re an educated cat lover, because a lot of

people don’t know what FIV is. If you do, then you know FIV may never directly affect my life as long as I’m given the same quality care that any other cat receives. A sup-pressed immune system is no reason for me to be eutha-

nized, or to remain homeless for the rest of my days. Just keep me indoors, give me good food, good love and

regular vet care and I’m on the right path to staying healthy! Wouldn’t you do that for any cat? It would also be necessary for me to be the only cat in the household. On the other hand, if your cat also has FIV, I would be an excellent companion! I’m already neutered, vaccinated and litterbox-trained. At 9-years of age, I don’t deserve the indignity of homelessness. Would you please have compassion for me and take me home where I belong?

Call Pender County Humane Society at 910-259-7022 to find out more, and thank you for caring about my future!

Thanks!

LOCAL CATS NEED YOUR HELP!!!

THE RUFFIAN FOUNDATION

A Feral Cat Sanctuary

Please help us continue to rescue and relocate local feral cats driven from their habitats by rapid economic development and neglect, resulting in their suffering, and often, death. We are an

ALL VOLUNTEER NONPROFIT 501 (C) (3) CHARITABLE ORGANIZATION. We trap, alter, vaccinate, and relocate (as their

last resort) these at risk cats to the refuge of our donated wooded acreage. We also educate on humane solutions to feral cat overpopulation and related health concerns of the public.

There are a number of healthy feral cats already living at the sanctuary, but we desperately need funds to construct new enclosures to keep them safe and accept new cats from the

waiting list. THE CATS NEED YOUR HELP NOW - please donate to the Ruffian Foundation for food, housing, bedding, and

medical care.

PLEASE CONTRIBUTE to this worthy and HUMANE cause – THE CATS THANK YOU!!!

Hi, Ladies and Gents, my name is Nikki and I'm the BEST Minia-ture Schnauzer ever!

Let me tell you all about me...I'm a great

little girl, just 18 pounds, and am

house-trained, great with all people, leash-trained, and ride well in the car. I couldn’t care less about cats, and I love other dogs. See, I told you I am

the best! A lot of peo-ple have overlooked

me, however, be-cause I am 9-years-old. I don't under-

stand that because I have been given a clean bill of health by the vet, and I don't have any ailments whatsoever. I can

guarantee you that I will bring lots and lots of love, cuddles, and laughs to a lucky family for years to come. I am up to date on all of my shots, microchipped, have had my teeth

cleaned, am spayed, and am heartworm negative. The only thing left is for me to get a great home. Can you give me that? If so, go to www.schnauzerrescueofthecarolinas.org

and fill out an application. If you need one faxed or mailed to you, please call 910-264-8300.

I am sponsored by State Farm Rob Cutting Insurance

Agency in loving memory of Mulligan.

I’m Isabella, a Miniature Schnauzer who weighs

approximately 12 pounds. I’m a sweet

little senior girl (age unknown) who has been a complete joy

to my foster home! I love

other dogs, am house-trained, crate-trained, and am so full

of love. Please don’t pass me by because I’m older! I will make someone an excellent companion. I am on heartworm prevention, up to date on all my

shots, and I have had a dental. I have a slight cataract in one eye, but it isn’t hindering me in the least. I am going to be a wonderful, affectionate pet to my new adopter, and I deserve what all spoiled-rotten family dogs deserve...a place where I can be loved forever.

To find out even more about me, please visit our website at www.schnauzerrescueofthecarolinas.org. There you can fill out an application online and view other adoptable rescues. If you need an application mailed or faxed to you, please call 910-264-8300.

URGENT, URGENT!

I’M RUNNING OUT OF TIME!

Isn’t it sad that a

gentle, brown-eyed beauty like me is

spending her days and nights in a con-crete kennel at Ani-mal Control? And

what’s even sadder is that I keep getting overlooked in favor

of other dogs. That’s what hap-

pens to black dogs sometimes. People are drawn to color and pass me by.

But wait - I’m so wonderful! My name is Alexis (CF2625) and I’m a young Sheltie mix, just 30 pounds or so, with silky long fur. I was found as a stray by the side of the road, doing my best to avoid the cars whizzing by.

Thank goodness someone stopped for me! I’m great with other dogs but I’d rather not live with kitty cats. I’m friendly to all the people I’ve met and have been a per-fect angel during my stay here. Won’t you please take

me home with you? Call Pender County Animal Control at 910-259-1349 or Officer Clewis at 910-279-3196 and

give me the happy ending I so deserve.

I am sponsored by Kathy Lanio. Thank you!

Hello there! I’m a hand-some St. Bernard mix

named Sebastian. The nice folks at Animal Control rescued me

from the highway after I had been grazed by a bullet. (Don’t worry, I

wasn’t hurt and am just fine.) No one can un-

derstand why someone would shoot at a nice

boy like me! Now I’m at Pender County Humane

Society searching for my forever family. You

see, the St. Bernard was bred for rescuing

people, but now I’m the one in need of help! I

was made to be someone’s beloved companion, and can’t understand why I’m homeless. I’m a very friendly fellow who loves everyone I meet. Just check out my smile! I’m already house-trained (yay!) and leash-trained, too. At 60 pounds, I’m neutered, vaccinated and on heartworm prevention. I

play well with other dogs, love to be hugged and petted, and would enjoy living in an adult-only home or one with children

ages 8 and older. If you’d like to meet me, please call the shelter at 910-259-7022 and let’s set things up!

I am sponsored by George, Brenda and John Harriss in loving memory of Miss Scarlett, Rosie Belle, Candy and

Lady, special friends, all.

NOW OPEN - Noon to 4pm on Saturdays!

◄Don’t you just want to kiss my pudgy cheeks and take me home?

I’m Citrus (FM2225), a young boy who has

been living at Animal Control since June 15.

It’s so crazy that there is no special human or

special family in my life! I was born to be by someone’s side...or

their lap...or their arms. I’m not picky! I do love to be held and kissed

and have a very friendly personality. I was found as a stray and would be

happiest if I was the only cat in the home. You and I will have such a purrfect life together. Let’s get started!

◄Ashleigh (FF2217) is my name and I hope to soon hear you saying it at my cage door. You see, I’m tired of shelter life and I want to rest in someone’s loving arms. How about yours? My owner could no longer afford me and brought me to the shelter. I’m a sweet, friendly, loving girl and I’ve been here since June 9. Please, please take me away with you!

◄My life would be so much nicer if you were a part of it! Hi, my name is

Jelly Bean (FF1955) and I’ve been living at

Animal Control since my arrival in March of this

year. That’s far too long for a beautiful, friendly, affectionate girl like me to be without a family.

Won’t you please plan to take a ride out here and meet me? The shelter is now open on Saturdays! I am friendly, gentle and

highly affectionate. You’ll be so glad you gave me a second chance at life!

►I’m Gretchen (FF2374) and I believe I’m a kitten who is destined to love

you! I’m a baby girl, just 8-weeks-old, and my one dream in life is to

be someone’s treasured companion. If you want to do something really worthwhile, how about

coming to the shelter and giving me a cuddle? We

can also play with my toys together. I’m sure to make you smile or giggle.

Who knows - you just may decide to take me

home. It would be a truly wise decision.

◄Hello there! My name is Buster Brown

(CM2703) and I’m a precious Beagle puppy. I’m a teeny-tiny boy at

just 5-weeks of age. My brother, Charlie Brown (CM2704), is also here and looks a lot like me. We were picked up on the highway. Whew, getting found was our lucky break! Being

adopted by you will be our second lucky break. I

am extremely kissable and am small enough to

fit in one hand. Hurry on over to the shelter, please!

►It’s Kitten Season! This

shelter has been filled to the brim with

adorable, kissable

kittens. We are two of

them and we’re here with one other sibling

and our mother. My name is Sookie (FF2132) and I’m the Tabby on the left. Next to me is my brother, Jason (FM2133). He has

ebony-colored fur. We are just 6 to 8-weeks-old and we love to play, purr and melt hearts. Come see how we do it!

Spay and neuter your pets. There simply aren’t

enough homes for us all.

Adoption saves a life, spay & neuter saves thousands!

Hello up there! Want to go for a roll in the grass with me? My

name is Sheba and I’m a very friendly girl, just

9-months-old. I was found as a stray in someone’s

yard. As you can see, I’m a small-sized girl with a

slender build. I’m a beau-tiful creamy-white and I have the softest brown eyes ever! I’ve heard

some people say that they think I’m a Saluki mix. I’m doing great at the shelter

and am happy and playful. I get along well with everyone - adults, children, dogs and even cats. I’ve also already been spayed, vaccinated and

placed on heartworm prevention. If you’re looking for a real sweetheart to spend the rest of your life with, I hope you’ll consider me. Just call SOAR at 910-457-6340 and they’ll

tell you how we can get together!

I am sponsored by Top Toad in the Cotton Exchange in Downtown Wilmington, NC. Thank you!

Hey there, I’m Jethro! I’m one of the five Beverly Hillbillies in the Pawsitive Partners Prison Pro-

gram. I was not able to enter the program before because I had

heartworms, but now I have been treated and am all better! Can’t you tell how happy I am by the big grin on my face? I will be in

school for nine weeks, but when I graduate in September I can be all yours! I’m about 3-years-old

so I have none of that wild puppy stuff you would have to deal with. Add the training I get here and I’ll be the best pet ever! Won’t you

give me a try? I have been through so much and only want a home to call my own. If you can spare a little

space for me, email [email protected] or call 910-262-3055. If you want to see the rest of the Clampett Clan, check the website at www.montyshome.org (of course you’ll see I’m the handsomest of the bunch!)

I am sponsored by Barb Raab in honor of the

group who treated my heartworms, Sacred Animal Companions.

◄Hello! The nice people here have named me Gorgeous because that's what everyone says I am! I’m a long-haired, ebony girl with a mane of fur that frames my beautiful face. At 2-years of age, I'm a very affectionate feline who is spayed, current on my vaccinations and litterbox-trained. Come visit and you’ll find me curled up in a cat bed, or gazing out the window. I’ll be sure to beautify and warm your home!

►I’ve only been here a week, but I’m settling in

nicely and making friends with everyone! My name is Rebecca

and I’m a 10-month-old Lab mix who was first

spotted by the Humane Society at Pender

County Animal Control. My sister and I had

been found as strays. (Hannah is on this page, too.) I am

already spayed, up to date on shots and on

heartworm prevention. I’m gentle, sweet and precious. Could I please be yours?

◄Hi there! My name is Micky and I'm a 2 to 3-year-old Shepherd/Retriever mix. I'm neutered, current on my vaccinations, leash-trained, house-trained, and on heartworm prevention. I'm very sweet and get along well with other dogs, but I’d prefer a child-free home. I’d also prefer a home with a fully fencedyard. If you're interested in meeting me, please come to the shelter real soon.

◄Hey there! Are you looking for a fun and

fabulous friend? Well, hop on in the car and

come out here! My name is Hannah and I’m a

10-month-old Lab mix girl who is waiting to spend my life with people who love me. I’ve only been

here a week, but I’m already melting hearts

with my sweet nature and playful personality. I get

along well with other dogs and am sharing a kennel with my sister,

Rebecca. She’s pictured on this page, too. Adopt me!

A declawed, long-haired,

Russian Blue mix is

waiting to be adopted. It’s me, Linus!

I’m a 3-year-old, neutered

male who enjoys being

rubbed. I also love sitting in

windows, gazing at the world as it passes by. Do you have a window that needs me? I’d love to live safely indoors with you, cuddling and basking in the sun by the window pane.

Come meet me, please!

◄It’s me, Bubbles! Aren’t I a beauty? I have one white ear, one black ear, a black nose and a white body. I’m quite unique! My breed is a

mystery - perhaps Terrier, Pug or Bulldog mixes -

but it’s a delightful combo! At just 18-months, I’m as sweet and gentle as can be. I love to roll over for belly rubs and I’ve been friendly to every single person I’ve met at the

shelter. I get along well with other dogs and would

be so happy to make your acquaintance. Come see me!

My name is Libby but you might want

to call me ‘Libby the Lovebug’. I

bet you can guess why, but I’ll tell you anyway: I’m a very

sweet and affec-tionate girl who is simply grateful for the touch of a kind hand and any lov-ing words. I was found as a thin stray with my

buddy, Gus. He’s a Hound and is

also at the shelter looking for a home. I’ve put on weight in the months that I’ve been here and have made quite a positive impression with my mellow, gentle personality.

The folks here have yet to even hear me bark. I’m under 2-years-old and would love to be part of a family. I think I was born for that! I am already spayed, vaccinated and on heartworm prevention, so all I need now is for you to come fall in love with me. If you need directions or any

other info, please call SOAR at 910-457-6340.

I am sponsored by SOAR in loving memory of all their wonderful, furry friends who made it safely to

ENTER MY CONTEST AND BE A WINNER!

Hi there, I’m Julian! I’m a homeless canine with the Sunburst Foundation. I’ve been to various adoption

fairs and it seems as though everyone has a different

opinion as to what breeds I may be mixed with. I’ve

heard Yellow Lab, American Staffordshire Terrier, Dobie, Weimaraner, Vizsla, Hound

and even Dachshund mentioned. Sunburst has decided to order a DNA test and we thought we’d make it even

more fun (as well as a great fundraiser for the rescue) to have a contest where folks can ‘Guess the Breed’. You

can email your guess to [email protected]. A $10 entry is also required and can be mailed to

Sunburst Foundation, P.O. Box 7527, Wilmington, NC 28406. When guessing, keep in mind that only AKC

breeds are acknowledged with DNA testing. Those folks who have correctly identified my predominant breed will

be put into a hat and a winner will be drawn. The contest will go through the end of August and the breed and win-ner will be announced in the September edition of Paw-Prints. The winner will receive 50% of the total money raised. If you have any questions, or would like to in-quire about adopting me, please contact Sunburst at 910-622-0011. You can view more pics and a bio on

me at www.petfinder.com/NC167.

I am sponsored by the Karl Miller family. Thanks!

again. I am a very outgo-ing and affectionate Shel-tie girl. My foster family is

amazed at my level of activity. I just love life! Since arriving at Sheltie Rescue Boot Camp, my foster dad has been helping me regain my svelte figure. I only have a pound or two left to lose. At 9-years of age, I am house-trained, leash-trained, come when called,

crate-trained and am good in the car. I am ready to graduate to my forever home. To make me your family member, call Triangle Sheltie Rescue at 919-306-5148 or 910-558-6963. You may also visit our website at www.triangleshelties.com.

I am sponsored by TopailForSale.com in honor of John

My name is Molly and I am 4-years-old, vacci-

nated and spayed. I have been told that I have a

very sweet soul. I am a very good girl in my crate and a very calm and quiet

girl. When it is time for me to go outside, my

playful side comes out and I like playing with the other girls in my group. I

just love my affection time from my two-legged

friends. I would be a wonderful companion to your family! I wish you would come and meet me. I think you would love to take me home

forever! You can view other greyhounds looking for good homes at www.greyhoundfriends.com. Please

SOAR (Southport Oak Island Animal Rescue) Please call 910-457-6340 to adopt us!

◄My name is Louie and I’m a friendly,

affectionate boy. I’ve been at SOAR for quite

a long time, so I can hardly express how

grateful I would be to be adopted! Let’s just say that lots of purrs

and kisses would be in store for the one who takes me home. It’s quite a mystery why I

haven’t been snapped up. I love to play with toys and will keep my

new family entertained! I use my scratching

post and litterbox and am in great health. Adopt me!

►Hello! I’m an extremely affectionate

Hound boy named Gus. I was found on the

beach as a stray and was so skinny. Since

arriving, I’ve put on weight and am melting hearts with my friendly,

loving nature. I rarely even bark! I love to play

and am around 1-year-old. I don’t jump up on

people and I’m good with other dogs. You’ll

find I’m extremely handsome, too, so

come on over quick!

►I was fed from a bottle at 2-weeks-old,

so that makes me extra sweet and loving to

humans! My name is Cereta and I was born June 30, 2009. I am

affectionate and playful and I get along great with other animals in my foster home: a big dog, big cats, and several other kittens! I’m an adorable little girl who is already spayed,

vaccinated and litterbox-trained. If you adopt me, I’ll even come wearing this tux-edo! Please call my SOAR foster mom at 910-278-4437.

►Hello, my name is Fiona (I’m

the one laying down,

relaxing). These are my sisters

and my brother,

from left to right: Zimba (brother), Flame and Bear. We are being fostered for SOAR and need to find homes. Our

foster dad found us behind a gas station in Southport. He carried us to safety and now we are living with two big dogs and a couple of cats, too. We are all litter-trained, have had all our shots and have been spayed/neutered. Just hanging out here for a bit ‘til you come see us and fall in love! Give our foster mom, Karen, a call, and tell her you would like us to be part of your family. This is her number: 910-845-4875.

►I’m an adorable kitten named Streak! I was born on April 14 and

was found as an orphan, completely

alone! I’m now having fun in my foster home and get along well with a big dog and several other cats and kittens. I’m extremely playful

and healthy as can be! I am pure white except

for a black ‘streak’ between my ears. If

you are interested in an exceptionally beautiful white male kitten, call my SOAR foster mom at 910-278-4437.

◄Come to the shelter and

watch us play! We will steal

your heart, for sure. My name is Saki and I’m the girl wearing white socks on the left. Next to me is my

ebony-colored brother, Sam.

We turned 1-year-old on May 5 and are SO ready to find great homes! We are very friendly and loveable. It would be super if we

could be adopted together. You’ll get two best friends, as well!

Hi there! I’m Hal, a happy

black and white German

Shorthair Pointer mix

with a docked tail. I’m about

2-years-old and a nice-sized dog at

about 45 pounds. Typi-

cal of my breed, I have

lots of energy for outdoor play, and am a couch potato when I come in to rest. I would like a home with one, or possibly two, other active dogs to be my playmates. I

would love to be part of an active family that will take me on outings and visits to local dog parks. I’m wonderful with other dogs at home, day care and the dog park.

I’m a very loyal dog, and will want to visit with my new family several times before I ‘move in,’ so that a mutual attachment can develop. My energy level would make

me best for a family with school-aged children. I’m well-behaved in the house. It will be important for me to con-

tinue my crate training, and I will need a home with a fenced yard. I’ve studied basic obedience and learned

‘sit’ and ‘down’ on command. I’m also neutered, on heartworm prevention, I know my name and come when called most of the time. I enjoy leash walks, but prefer

to run and play! If you and your dog would like to schedule a play date with me, whether or not you would be interested in adopting me, please call Donna at 910-508-5518. Your dog will get a great workout and have a

great time! Photo courtesy of Cheryl Snyder of Snyderneff Photography & Dog Art.

Thanks to my friends at Dineen Animal Hospital and Dog Club of Wilmington for taking such good care

of me. Special thanks to my foster family…you have done a great job with me!

◄I’m Dawson and I love all people, especially children! I’m a 3-year-old, flat-coated Retriever mix and I’d dearly love to belong to your family. I am house-trained, crate-trained, neutered, vacci-nated, and on heartworm prevention. I play well with other dogs and I’ve had no problem with cats. I can also sit on com-mand for treats. Don’t I sound like a great fellow? Call today so we can meet real soon!

◄URGENT FOSTER HOME Needed For A Very

Friendly Girl!!! My name is Casey and I’m a Black Lab mix. I am such a sweetheart and I seem to do well with other dogs. And of course I love people! Right now I am at Animal Control

while waiting for a foster home. I am very lonely at the shelter and am in des-perate need of compassion

from some kind human or family. Additionally, I have been diagnosed as heartworm positive and, although

some wonderful folks have already donated to my medi-cal care, I will need more in order to undergo treatment.

Donations can be sent to Sunburst Foundation, P.O. Box 7527, Wilmington NC 28406. Please indicate that it is for ‘Casey’. A quiet foster home or permanent home is

also needed for me to stay in during treatment!

Sunburst Foundation is in desperate need of

donations to continue its mission of rescue, rehab and re-home. Foster homes are desperately

needed so that adoptable canines from municipal shelters can continue to be taken. Thanks to its

spay/neuter grant, Sunburst has provided services to approximately 50 owned canines that other-wise would continue filling the shelters with un-wanted litters of pups and adult dogs. Your tax

deductible donation can be sent to Sunburst Foundation, PO Box 7527, Wilmington, NC 28406.

◄Most of you know that my name is Jasper and I have been looking for a home for

about 5 to 6-years. Well, finally someone came up with the idea that I might actually be one of those RARE SPECIAL breeds

called the Carolina Dog. A biology researcher from Georgia Southern University is doing a study on these dogs who are

native to Southeastern US. My weight and overall appearance

matches up with most of the characteristics of this particular breed. So...here is your

chance to own an exotic breed, as well as a good ole dog who loves people, sports (foot ball, soccer, kick ball and I’ll fetch and retrieve the ball and set it up for you to kick back). I’m also crate-trained, house-trained, sweet, good with some other dogs...I could go on and on. You can read up on the Carolina Dog research at www.cdrcp.org. Very interesting!

◄Hello! I’m Lola and I’m a very sweet and loving girl. I’m a 3-year-old Shepherd

mix and all I want is to please and be loved. I do have an old cruciate liga-ment injury which requires me to stay on glucosamine chondroiton for my lifetime. I interact very well with lar-ger dogs who are laid back, and it would be helpful if I were hand walked on a

regular basis to strengthen my muscles. I’m doing

beautifully in my foster home and hope to soon find a forever family. Let’s arrange a visit, okay?

◄Hey there! I’m Bobbin, an 8-year-old male Basset/Corgi/

Westie mix who is house-trained, crate-trained, up to date on shots, neutered and

on heartworm prevention. I’ve been through advanced obe-

dience training and would love to be part of an active, adult home. I adore people and play best with dogs that are larger than me and docile. I still have a lot of spunk and I

love to go for walks. I walk well on a leash and would do best in a gentle leader. They tell me that I’m quite

amusing-looking and I do tend to get a laugh wherever I go. I weigh around 45 pounds. Call today!

Cats Need Your Help The Ruffian Foundation needs volunteers (preferably weekly) to help care for its feral cat sanctuary in Pender County. The over 70 cat residents need feeding, cleaning of their enclosures, and some kind words!! Help is also needed with grant seeking, fundraising events and festival booths, all of which help raise donations and awareness for the often sad plight of feral cats. To help or inquire about upcoming meetings, please contact the group via email through their website: www.cattails.org/RF or call Kris at 910-602-3664. The Ruffian Foundation was established in 2004, as an

all volunteer 501c(3) non-profit, charitable organization, to provide a sanctuary for feral cats. Many of these cats are driven from their local habitats by rapid human eco-nomic development and ne-

glect. They face suffering and often, death. Whenever possible, the Ruffian Foundation, in cooperation with similar agencies, will trap, alter, vaccinate, relocate, and care for them in natural enclosures on the sanctuary grounds. It also strives to educate the public on humane solutions for feral cat overpopulation and related commu-nity health concerns.

CAT Desperately Needs Volunteers! Cat Adoption Team (CAT) is a non-profit, all volun-teer rescue group dedicated to saving the lives of felines. They are in need of volunteers to help them continue their adoption program at Petsmart in Wilmington. Volunteers should be cat lovers, at least 21 years of age, able to work independently, reliable, and willing to spend two hours a week cleaning cages, feeding kitties, and processing adoptions at Petsmart. Week-ends are their biggest need. If you can help, please call Sherry at 910-233-5339. Seri-ous inquiries only, please.

Want to be in a Music Video about Animal Rescue? Monty’s Home will begin shooting footage shortly for their educa-tional rap song “It’s Cool to Adopt” and they need vocalists, both lead and chorus. Even if you can’t sing, you can get involved as part of a crowd who supports rescue. They have an important message to get across, and the completed video will be uploaded to YouTube and shown on other public viewing outlets. To find out more, send an email to [email protected] or call 910-259-7911.

I’m an adorable, gentle, adult

female Poodle named Little Poo. There’s not a mean bone in my body, which makes it so hard to understand why I was severely neglected in my for-mer home. When

NC Rescue League found me, I was

completely covered in matted fur that twisted my skin. I

couldn’t even see because my eyes were covered by the thick mats. At the groomer, it took almost all day to com-pletely shave me. Now I’m in a foster home where I am

enjoying being pampered for once in my life. I’m skin and bones right now, so I wear a shirt in the air-conditioning. I’m resting and getting better and am looking forward to the day I have a new family, one that treats dogs kindly and with love. I get along well with the other dogs here,

and I enjoy going for walks. I’ve never shown any aggres-sion and have a docile, laid-back personality. If you’d like

to learn more about adopting me, please call my foster mom at 919-222-6291. You can also visit NC Rescue League’s website at www.ncrl.petfinder.com to see me

and others available for adoption!

I am sponsored by State Farm Rob Cutting Insurance Agency in honor of Molly. Thank you!

Tails U Win Please call 910-250-3004 or email [email protected] to adopt us!

◄Hi, my name is Jesse. I'm a precious, scaredy-britches,

sweet little Corgi mix who never felt the love of a human hand until I was over 3-months-old. I'm in a foster home that's got

another girl doggie who used to be just like me, but she's

learned that people are loving and fun and security. She's

helping me open up my heart to receive all the love I so much

deserve. I even jumped up on the bed to sleep with my foster Mom and Dad the other day!

Anyone who adopts me MUST understand it will take me some time to trust and love, and I can NOT be outside with-out a canvas slip collar and a halter at the same time! It will

still take me a bit to get used to the big bad world and not ever be frightened of new stuff, but I've already come a long

way in a very short time.

►I’m Mr. Oreo, a big sweet-heart. I’m a black Lab mix with all the personality of a

Lab. I’m approximately 1-year-old and weigh close

to 70 pounds. My foster Mom is working with me on leash and I'm beginning to get pretty good at that, but

what I love the most is being outside and playing with all my foster buddies. Please

get in touch with Tails U Win and put in your application to

take me home to be your lovin' baby boy, okay?

►My name is Corey and a big old meanie out there shot me in my front

leg! Oh no! Tails U Win got me to the vet and got my leg all fixed. My vet

thought I would have a big limp, but I showed him just how strong I am, be-

cause I hardly limp at all now. I’m about 3-years-old. I'm having a blast playing

with all my kitty and doggie friends at my foster home. After all I've been through, my foster Mom

says I need a home that will spoil me totally rotten. I prom-ise to give a whole lifetime of kitty purrs!

►My name is Diver. I was found running on the streets. I was not feeling too good when the nice ladies with the rescue took me in. My eye was really, really infected and it would be best for me to have my eye re-moved just like Cindy, pictured below. I started feeling better right away! I love to lay in bed with my foster mom so she can rub me all over and I can purr like a little kitty-machine. If you can go online,

then go to www.pawprintsmagazine.com so you can see my totally gorgeous, unique, orange-cream-lollipop fur!

◄Hi, there! My name is Jetta. I was at Animal Control but they brought me here to Tails U Win

so that I could have a foster home. I was adopted, but the other doggies at my new home didn't like me, so now I have to find another home. I'm a gor-geous short-fur Border Collie mix who is just way too sweet

and smart to boot! I'm about 5-months-old now and I'm having a blast playing with my

foster doggies, pups, kitties and cats. I'm all crate-trained and I'm almost house-trained, too!

►My name is Tasha and I was dumped at Animal Control, all

preggo and about to have my babies any day! The nice ladies at Tails U

Win took me in, then I had eight little babies on February 3rd. My babies are all weaned now (I was a good

Mommy!) and I will be ready for my new home soon. I have been

treated for heartworms, have been spayed, and am all healthy and ready for a new life. I'm crate-

trained and house-trained, I get along with all the kitties in my foster home, and I also love playing with the pups at my foster home. My foster mom knows I'll be a wonderful ad-dition for any family, because I'm her puppy socializer for all the new pups that come to her house! Call today and put in your application. I'll have them read it to me and I'll

let them know which home is the one I want to go to, okay?

►My name is Cindy. I was just wandering around town, looking for someone to help

me because my eye was infected. It was hurting really

bad. A kind person picked me up and took me to the

ladies at Tails U Win. They took me to the vet, but they

couldn't save my eye. That's okay, because I'm doing

really well now with just my one eye. I'm all ready to find my own family to love and be loved. Please call me if

you’d like to make me a part of your loving family!

Hi, my name is Sissy. I'm approxi-mately 5-years-old.

I’m a beautiful, loving spayed girl and I am a great companion.

People say I look just like my mother, Misty

(also available for adoption). My sister, Pearly Girl, and I get along really well. We

recently lost our owner to cancer so we would love to stay together.

Can we come live in your loving home? I am heartworm positive but my overall health is good. I am taking heart-worm meds to clear up that problem. I am current on my vaccinations and I'm 40 pounds of pure love and sweet-ness. I am a little bashful but I'm very gentle and love attention. Thanks to Amy at VanDyne K-9, I too, have polished up my social skills and I do well on a leash. I

know I mentioned this, but I have a sister named Pearly Girl who also needs a new home. Hey, perhaps you can adopt us both and keep our family together? Our story begins

when we were

Hey Everyone, I’m Elly May. The wonderful

people from Monty’s Home came and rescued me from the pound. I am now enrolled in the Pawsi-tive Partners Prison Pro-gram for 9-weeks to learn

basic obedience skills from my trainer. Ok, let me tell you about myself

and what a wonderful dog I can be. I am a flat-

coated Retriever mix. I am approximately 1-year-old. I am all black with a little bit of white on my

chest. I am a moderately active dog who is more

than happy to conform to my new owner’s wishes. I can be a couch potato and just lay around and be loved on, but I

also like to participate in some kind of dog sport. I don't like to brag but I can do everything pretty well, cook, do the

laundry, clean and dust the house - oh, just kidding, but I figured I could put a smile on your face. I am really friendly, smart, trainable and loving, and can please my new owner. So if you want a wonderful dog, I am the girl for you! For

more information, visit www.montyshome.org, email [email protected] or call 910-262-3055.

Hello, I’m Abbe. I am a 3 to 4-year-old smooth coat Border Collie

Mix. I am pretty curious about the world and have a lot of

energy. What I really love, love, love is chasing and retrieving balls and Fris-bees. I would like to move to a home with a fenced yard

where I can go out and run as

much as I want. I’ve learned to

play gently with other dogs, people and children. Also, I have been

spayed, and am current on all my shots. I am also taking heartworm prevention medicine. If you are interested in

me, please call 919-682-6125 or visit the Carolina Border Collie Rescue website at www.CBCR.org for more infor-mation about me and other dogs currently available for

adoption.

PENDER ENDANGERED ANIMAL RESCUE

Hello, my name is Stella! I am an American Staffordshire Terrier, and my age is about

2-years-plus. I love to run and watch sunsets on the beach. But I just love to run and run. I was turned over to PEAR

quite a while back and am still waiting. I would love to have a forever home - the holi-

days have gone and now I’m here for the summer. I go to adoption fairs every weekend and people pet and play

with me...but I still end up going back to the kennels. I am full of energy and I do know several commands. I also

enjoy getting my tummy rubbed! I am spayed, vaccinated and heartworm negative. Please, if you’re interested in giving me a warm home with lots of love, email PEAR at

[email protected] or call 910-675-0867.

PET FRIENDS OF DUPLIN COUNTY

I'm a Shepherd mix named Beatrice. I'm a very sweet, friendly girl and get along with other dogs. I'm vaccinated but unfortunately, I have heartworms. I'm getting my treatment and will soon

be good as new, but you probably know that's very expensive. If you could help pay for my treatment,

please send a donation (any size will help) to Pet Friends of Duplin County,

P.O. Box 152, Wallace, NC 28466 and let them know it's for Beatrice. I

would appreciate it very much. Even better, if I could be-come a member of your family, please call 910-271-3101.

FUREVER FRIENDS

My name is Fred and I am a laid-back couch potato who is

approximately 8-years-old, neutered, vaccinated, house-trained and will be treated for heartworms. I’m good with

kids, cats, and other dogs and I love to just hang out. I would enjoy having a fenced yard so that I can go out and sunbathe

- that way if I pick up the scent of something, I can’t run off. I would love to be an important part of your life. To make me part of your family, please call Furever Friends at 910-

383-2100 (Monday through Friday between 8am-6pm).

Reba is my name, remember when I was here last winter?

Since then, because of my sweet nature and terrific personality, I was selected for the North Caro-lina New Leash on Life Program

at the Bladen County Correctional facility. My inmate spends several

hours each day training me in obedience and good canine man-

ners. I am ready now for a best friend to show off my train-ing and share my life! I am a beautiful brindle Boxer and

Labradorable mix, spayed and up to date on vaccinations. I am outgoing and love everyone…except maybe cats…don’t let that come between us! Everyone who knows me says I am a joy to be around, so why not call Tricia at 910-879-

6115 to learn how we can meet. You can also find A Shel-ter Friend is online at www.AShelterFriend.org

A SHELTER FRIEND OF SE NORTH CAROLINA

COLUMBUS HUMANE SOCIETY

My name is Jessie and I'm so very happy that I was rescued. I had a very bad owner who

would burn me with ciga-rettes. It has taken me a little while to trust people but with a lot of love and attention I'm doing just

fine. I'm in a home with a little girl and other dogs

and we love to run and play in the backyard. I also love to go on runs/walks every morning/evening. I do love to play with my chew toys, I'm all house-trained and crate-trained, vaccinated, heartworm free and neutered. If you are inter-ested, please email Pat at [email protected] or

call 910-640-1505 and she will tell you all about me. Just think, we could go to the beach and run through the waves

and play catch, wouldn't you love a companion like me?

PHOENIX LANDING FOUNDATION

Hi, my name is Huckleberry and I am a Quaker parakeet. I really

enjoy riding around on a shoulder and going all around the house while you do your chores - or

maybe sit with you while you take a break on the couch for some TV or reading time. I can even talk including words like "Step

up," and "Cracker." I really like being the center of atten-tion and I can join in on most any conversation with my

own amusing Quaker chatter. I'd love to come home with you to explore fun, bird-safe areas at your house! I also

have many other feathered friends who need good homes, including all sizes of parrots from little parakeets to big

macaws. For more information on the adoption process, please visit our website at www.phoenixlanding.org, email

OPERATION TOPCAT

My name is Susie and I was found at the

beach with an injured tail. I had to have it amputated but it isn't bothering me. I am

shy but I love attention and I will even let you

rub my belly, if you approach me quietly and gently. I am not a messy litterbox

user and I don't jump up on furniture unless invited to sit next to you. I don't like dogs too much and I think I would be afraid of small children. If I could, I would like to live

with a lady in a quiet home as loud noises scare me. With your love and trust I know I would be alright. I would love

to have a forever home, so maybe you could give me a try. To find out more about me, email [email protected] or

call 910-200-0612 and they will tell you how we can meet. I so hope you will consider loving me. You may also visit

Hi! My name is Pearl. I am a Shep-herd mix and yes, I know what you are thinking - she’s probably not very smart being a mixed breed of such. Well, you

would be so wrong as a lot of people often are. Mix breed dogs are very

intelligent, very loyal and we make won-derful companions. I guess what I am

trying to say is we make great pets. Take me, for instance. I’m a good-looking girl of about 18-months, I am smart and very well behaved. I like to have

fun and I just attention. I’m in training right now but in about six weeks I’ll be looking for a home to bring love and happiness into. For more info, visit www.montyshome.org,

email [email protected] or call 910-262-3055. Written for Pearl by her inmate trainer Phillip B.

PAWSITIVE PARTNERS PRISON PROGRAM

PLEASURE ISLAND PAWS

Hello, we are Ava and Chi and we

were found under a house! Luckily, a nice lady found us and nursed us to health! We are active, spayed, neutered, Feline

Leukemia and FIV negative, and cur-

rent on shots. So why not come down to the Carolina Beach Animal Hospital and take a look at us. Please

call 910-458-3000 for more info.

NORMAN P. WIGGLE HOME FOR WAYWARD DOGS

Want to fall in love? Come meet me! My name is Freddie. My plain black appearance may not stand out among the crowd

but my personality most cer-tainly does! I am a stand out because of my always sweet, always calm demeanor. I am about 5-years-old, neutered,

house-trained, up to date on my vaccinations and current on

heartworm prevention. I abso-lutely love people and I am great with small children, other

dogs, and cats. I even know how to sit on command! If you have questions or would like to meet me, email [email protected] or call 910-617-2818.

PENDER ANIMAL RESCUE

Hi there! I’m a Siamese mix kitten who is 1-year-old. My name is Peanut. I am a fe-male and a torte point. I am

very sweet but a little reserved when I first meet someone

new. I am up to date on vacci-nations, I tested negative for Feline Leukemia/FIV and I’ve been spayed. My new family must keep me indoors only. I am playful and entertaining to watch and I’m very neat and have good bathroom habits. To adopt me, please contact my Pender Animal Rescue foster mom, Tonia, at [email protected] or call her at

910-285-7663.

CAPE FEAR HOUSE RABBIT SOCIETY

My name is Belle, you know, as in Belle of the Ball! I am 3-years-old and have a very positive outlook in

spite of my difficult life. I lived outside, and was eventually turned

loose to fend for myself. I get along well with dogs and cats. I actually try to boss them when I can, which would not make me a good bunny for a child. I have a

lot of personality and can certainly be the diva in your life! I am 6

pounds, litterbox-trained, spayed, love playing with my toys and eating my green salads. To adopt me, call 910-471-

7854, email [email protected] or visit www.capefearrabbits.org to view more adoptable rabbits.

I’m a very talented and entertaining Poodle named

Casey! You see, one of my talents is that I can stand on my back legs and

twirl like a ballerina. Yep, I’m pretty spe-cial. I’m also a very

sweet and loving boy. NC Rescue

League found me at Animal Control. My left eye was badly infected so they got me to a doctor and it was removed.

But don’t worry, it doesn’t bother me a bit. I walk, run and play just like any other two-eyed pup. I’m a Certified Lap Dog who loves to be held and I’m very friendly to all the

humans I meet. I’ve never once shown any sign of aggres-sion. I get along well with other dogs, too! At just 2 to 4-years-old, I am neutered, vaccinated and on heartworm

prevention. Since I’m a small guy (just 12 to 14 pounds), a home with children who are 10 years of age and older

would be perfect. And if you don’t have kids, that’s OK! If you’d like to learn more about adopting me, please call my

foster mom at 919-222-6291. Or, visit NC Rescue League’s website at www.ncrl.petfinder.com to see me and

others available for adoption!

I am sponsored by Top Toad in the Cotton Exchange in Downtown Wilmington, NC. Thank you!

Hello there, my name is Abby! I’m a young, black,

Giant Schnauzer female who weighs approximately 85

pounds. I’m very cute and have cropped ears and a

docked tail. I’m a gregarious girl who loves to play. I have lots of energy for any activity. I came to Schnauzer Rescue of the Carolinas (SRC) after a divorce in the family. During that sad time, I was left out-side for many, many months and was unable to keep up

with my social skills. I’m now making wonderful improve-ments with my foster family and am also enrolled in obedi-ence training. This training started on July 14 and will con-tinue for one month. SRC hopes that I’ll be adopted during this time because the process also includes family support to assure a happy and permanent adoption. What a great opportunity for you to adopt a young girl with obedience

training! I am also spayed, vaccinated, microchipped and on heartworm prevention. I’m a lovely girl who is sure to

win your heart immediately. If you’re interested in adopting me, please visit www.schnauzerrescueofthecarolinas.org to fill out an application. Call 910-264-8300 to have an appli-cation faxed. You can also send an email to my friends at

[email protected].

NC ROTTWEILER RESCUE

Hi there, my name is Roma. I am about 4-years-old and love life! I love to play fetch. I love going on walks

and I love to be petted by my humans. I am

about 55 pounds, have my tail and am a bun-dle of energy. I love to

be active and play. I love all the attention I can get! I even love baths! I love, love, love to be loved and definitely

would do well with an active person. I’m also spayed, vac-cinated and house-trained. If it sounds like I would suit

your lifestyle, call Samantha with NC Rottweiler Rescue at 910-443-4177. You may also visit www.ncrottierescue.net

for more info or to see other Rotties looking for love.

Hi, I'm Molly. I am an adorable 3-year-old Dal-matian mix. I was res-

cued after I was turned in to a shelter in 2007.

They said I wouldn't lis-ten but what they didn't know was - I am deaf. I found a wonderful home

but unfortunately they are no longer able to keep me, so I am looking for a home

again. I am very smart and don't even need my ears! I get along just fine. I would probably do best in a home as a single dog. I am spayed, up to date on shots, on heart-

worm prevention, and microchipped. If you are interested in giving a loving girl like me a home, please check out the Dal Pals website at www.dalpals.org or call 910-575-3141.

CAROLINA DAL PALS My name is Maggie, and I'm a 2-year-old Miniature Schnauzer who has ex-

perienced great misfortune in my short life. First, I was dumped at a shelter

while pregnant, and second, my babies were taken away too soon and I devel-oped a horrible infection. Schnauzer

Rescue of the Carolinas picked me up, got my puppies, and nursed me back to health. Thirdly, it was discovered that I had heartworms, can you believe it? I have now gone through the treat-ment, and have received a clean bill of health, whew! I weigh just 15 pounds, am house-trained, crate-trained, good with other dogs, and I like to go for walks. I love going for rides in the car, and I love watching television with you at night. If you allow me to live with you, I will

shower you with kisses every day. You must go to www.schnauzerrescueofthecarolinas.org to complete an

application before meeting me. If you need an application faxed or mailed, please call 910-264-8300. I’m waiting!

SCHNAUZER RESCUE OF THE CAROLINAS

My name is Sebastian and I’m a goofy, playful, loving Saint Ber-

nard. I’m 2-years-old and have a unique ability to make people smile. I also have a perfect

HEART-shape on my left side, in case it is not obvious how much love I have to offer! Apparently when I was little, I was kept in a crate that was too small for me to stand up in, which caused my hind legs to be-come deformed. I was named Sebastian for the crab in

The Little Mermaid because of the way I walk, but my awk-ward gait does not stop me from running and playing with gusto! I would love a home with kids to run and play and snuggle with. Please call 910-547-4823 or send an email

to [email protected] for adoption info. You can also visit www.capefearsaintbernardrescue.com.

CAPE FEAR SAINT BERNARD RESCUE

Helloooo! Anyone there? It's me again, Oreo! I have been featured off and on for the last few months and am still waiting for my forever

home. I'm a 2 to 3-year-old Golden Retriever mix who is

house-trained, loves to play with other dogs, and I'm even great with cats! I also love to go for

walks and rides in the car. I'm up to date on my shots, have been

neutered and am just waiting for that perfect family to come along. Won't you give me a chance at a new forever home? If you are interested, please contact the Cape Fear Golden Retriever Rescue at 910-791-5001 or log onto their

site at www.cfgoldenrescue.com.

CAPE FEAR GOLDEN RETRIEVER RESCUE

CAROLINA BASSET HOUND RESCUE

My name is Angel and I’ve had a rough life. I was used to make

puppies for my owner. When they were done with me, they gave me away and then I was turned in to the shelter. Some-where along the way, I was mis-

treated and am a bit scared. However, I want to love and trust and will just need a little

time. My owners in the past didn't think enough of me to give me heartworm preventative, so I will need to go through heartworm treatment before I am available for

adoption. But I promise that when I am well, I will make the most loving pet ever! To make me a member of your fam-

ily, call 919-708-4247 or visit our website at www.cbhr.com.

Hi there! It’s me…Blackberry! My foster mom rescued me and named me Blackberry because I’m SO smart

and once you give me a try, you’ll find me indis-

pensable! I’m very “user friendly” and

never need my battery recharged! Well…

maybe a short catnap, but then I’ll play, purr and keep you enter-

tained! I’m a petite 4-month-old male, tested negative for FLV and FIV, neutered, vacci-

nated and perfect using the litterbox. I come

I’m an expert when it comes to making friends. I love all

people - men, women and children - but I

seem to have a special fondness for women. Can you blame me? After all, they love to

hug and kiss me and tell me how adorable I am.

I’m a Rottweiler mix who is small in stature and

I’m already neutered, up to date on vaccinations

and on heartworm prevention. I’m looking for a cat-free home, but other dogs are A-OK. If you’re looking for a sweet and friendly guy to

share life’s adventures with, I’m your boy! To find out more, or for driving directions, please call SOAR at 910-457-6340. They can tell you everything there is to know!
