Re-titling Benefits and System Costs Summaries
• Benefit Example– Current: Evaluation of the Motoring Public's Acceptance of a Real-Time
Travel Time Prediction System in a Freeway Construction Work Zone – Proposed: Ninety-seven percent of the motoring public found predicted
travel time information useful when posted at an I-75 work zone near Dayton, Ohio.
• System Cost Example– Current: Phoenix Metropolitan Model Deployment Initiative Evaluation
Report (Final Draft), Section 4: Advanced Traveler Information Systems, Subsection 4.2 Trailmaster Web Site and Roadway Closure and Restriction System Web Page
– Proposed: Costs to upgrade and redesign the Phoenix Metropolitan Model Deployment Initiative traveler information Web site was $135,782.
Arterial Management Systems Benefits
Adaptive Signal Control
Adaptive signal control systems reduce intersection delay up to 18% in
Los Angeles.
Integrated adaptive signal control, highway ramp metering, and alternative route information in Glasgow, Scotland, help balance heavy traffic loads and improve commute times.
Bicycle & Pedestrian
Automated pedestrian detection systems deployed in three U.S. cities reduce dangerous crossings at crosswalks by 81%.

New Knowledge Resource: State of the Practice Database--Genesis
• Feedback From PAUSE sparked effort to create new knowledge resource, aimed primarily at state and local agencies– Questions pointed to a new category of information needs, the
State of the Practice• Requirements are focused on “how” type questions, e.g.,
How are other agencies…– Training staff?– Funding O&M?– Using ITS in operations?– Presenting ITS projects to the public?
• Conclusion: there is an unmet need for information on the State of the Practice
Read-ahead pg. 6
21
New Knowledge Resource: State of the Practice Database--Status
• State of the practice data will be tied to the nine Lessons Learned categories
• With support of PAUSE, nine sample state of the practice questions were developed and included in the 2006 survey– Results are included in read-ahead
• 2007 survey will cover state of the practice extensively– Deployment statistics will be integrated as part of the new
knowledge resource
• PAUSE members may help with 2007 survey by reviewing surveys and providing feedback
• Any volunteers?

RSS and E-mail Subscription Update?
• Officially launched RSS and the E-mail Subscription Services at TRB in January 2007.
• Allows users to keep current on many Web sites by checking “headlines” in one location– Delivered automatically to their computer via RSS or Email
• RSS becoming more readily available
Read-ahead pg. 1
26
The ITS Subscription Services Addresses
• Really Simple Syndication (RSS)- Subscribing to channels
http://www.itsbenefits.its.dot.gov/rss
• E-mail Subscription Service- Signing up for the email subscription service http://itsdeployment.ornl.gov/ess
26
27
How is it going?
• Our customers successfully using the ITS Information Subscription Services:• RSS and E-mail Subscription Service subscribers have grown from
35 Beta testers to about 150 RSS users and 166 E-mail Subscription Service subscribers
• New users try out the E-mail Subscription Service and RSS every week
• Very few technical support calls received
27

Overview
• Brief overview of the ITS unit costs data
• Explanation why to restructure unit costs
• Impacts of the change
• Sample ITS core elements
• Poll the PAUSE
Read-ahead pg. 3
32
Background
• ITS Unit Costs Database brought online September 1999• The unit costs data are structured based on the cost elements in the
ITS National Architecture Cost Analysis and ITS Deployment Analysis System (IDAS) equipment list. IDAS is an ITS planning and cost/benefit tool. Costs updates shared with the IDAS team.
• Over time the costs analysis team added new cost elements to the unit costs database; unfortunately, these elements are not incorporated into IDAS.
• Updated semi-annually up to September 2004; annually thereafter– Adjusted costs
– Unadjusted costs
• Let’s take a quick tour… www.itscosts.its.dot.gov
33
34
35
36
37
38
Why restructure unit costs data?
• Difficulty in obtaining costs that map to many of the unit cost elements– Elements based on the 1995 National ITS Architecture – dated
1994/1995– Many elements more representative of high-level, less tangible
architecture components (e.g., systems integration – IDAS # IS017, Labor for Probe Information Collection – IDAS # TM036)
– Available cost data from state and local DOTs in various formats, representative of specific planned or actual deployments
• A smaller more representative set of ITS “core” elements will be more manageable and allow the ITS JPO to provide fresher (more current) cost data.
39
What are some of the impacts of this change?
• IDAS• Challenge of getting the correct set of ITS core elements that
can be maintained over time
• If the restructuring happens– the current unit costs data will still be available from the costs
Web site as a downloadable file– there will be no impact on the new CVISN cost data added
September 2006
• SurveyMonkey questions http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.asp?u=581053728910
40
Sample ITS Core Elements
• Continue to provide same type of data as now (i.e., capital range, O&M range, lifetime, description) and same formats (i.e., online, Excel, and Acrobat)
• Continue with the same or different structure?
