Lyell, regarded by most earth scientists today as the father of modern geology, visited Pictou in 1842 to

examine the great coal deposits at Albion Mines (Stellarton) south of the town. His principal guide was

Dawson, and from this encounter grew a lifelong friendship based on mutual respect. In the mid 1840s

Dawson, with the encouragement and guidance of Lyell, did considerable field-work in Nova Scotia, the

results of which were published in the quarterly Journal of the Geological Society of London. At the same

time, on contract, he undertook exploration programs for mining entrepreneurs in search of commercial

mineral and coal deposits in Nova Scotia.

.... In 1854 Dawson was elected a fellow of the Geological Society of London and in that year he

completed the manuscript of his monumental work, Acadian geology . . ., which was published in

Edinburgh and London the following year. The work was a practical and authoritative guide to the

geology and economic resources of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island. The fourth

and final edition, revised and updated, appeared in 1891, having grown from an initial 388 pages to

almost 700". - DCB.

Typically 10 or 12 copies were done; one or two for the author, one for assistants, one for the King's

Printer, one for the Minister, etc.. These bindings had a somewhat consistent style. While the practice

continued in some departments the binding in modern times is a rather sad maroon buckram.

Algonquin, p346. A standard work. The once populous Abenakis were part of the Algonquin

federation, who inhabited the northeast coast from New England to the St. Lawrence. With few

records available and no access to government documents, Maurault relied, for much of his history,

on American and Canadian works about the colonial wars (King William's War, 1689-97; Queen

Anne's War, 1702-13 & the Seven Years' War, 1756-63), in which the Abenakis had fought beside the

French. It includes some account of their manners and customs. The critics of the time were charitable

towards this ambitious work, devoted to a tribe in danger of extinction.

During this period some government publications were bound in a presentation binding.

Typically 10 or 12 copies were done; one or two for the author, one for assistants, one for the King's

Printer, one for the Minister, etc.. These bindings had a somewhat consistent style. While the practice

continued in some departments the binding in modern times is a rather sad maroon buckram.

A.B. 6676. The first two volumes are the narrative of the expedition, the rest are the scientific results. The

official narrative of the Harriman Alaska Expedition of 1899. Financed and organized by American railroad baron,

Edward H. Harriman, and under the guidance of the Smithsonian Institution and Washington Academy of Sciences,

the expedition travelled from Seattle to Sitka, to the Aleutians, into the Bering Sea to the edge of the Arctic Ocean.

The 100-member expedition included naturalists John Muir and John Burroughs, photographer Edward Curtis,

ornithologist Louis Agassiz Fuertes, artist R. Swain Gifford, cartographer Henry Gannett and ethnologist George Bird

Grinnell. A scientific reconnaissance, the itinerary was decided on-route, by committees of specialists, for scientific

investigations and collecting of specimens. In two-months, the Expedition covered some 9,000 miles and collected

around 50,00 specimens. Twelve volumes of the scientific results of the Expedition were eventually published by

the Smithsonian Institution, 1910-14.

The first edition of "Alaska" is of particular interest since it features a large set of photogravures after Curtis

printed with a quality found in no later editions or online downloads. The trip is noted as launching the career of the

photographer. Interestingly, Harriman's private motive for the expedition was his interest in the Kodiak bear which

he secured (and killed to the chagrin of John Muir) on Kodiak Island, the first ever measured and photographed.

A.B. 18400. The expedition sailed to the Bering and Chukcki Seas, during which an exploring

party under Lt. Cantwell (A Narrative of the Exploration of the Kowak (Kobuk) River); landed at Hotham

Inlet on Kotzebue Sound to survey the Kokuk River. The report includes details of the local illness that

Eskimos, the natural history of maritime Alaska, and information concerning a new volcano in the Bering

Sea. (illustrated with 6 photographs).

Healy was born on a plantation in Georgia, the son of an Irish immigrant father and a slave

mother. Among his brothers were Patrick Healy, a Jesuit priest who became president of Georgetown

University, and James A. Healy, the first African-American Bishop of Portland, Maine. He ran away from

home twice to go to sea, and ultimately became the first African-American Commander in the service of

the Coast Guard, having joined the Revenue Cutter in 1865. Apparently, Jack London's novel, Sea Wolf,

was based in part of the noteworthy life of Captain Healy. His race was strategically ignored during the

tenure of his long and distinguished service for the Coast Guard. He spent the last portion of his career

cruising up and down the Alaskan Coast, aimed at controlling contraband trade and supervising the

whaling fleet. A film biography about him, made for television, was produced during 1999.

expedition.

McClintock (1819-1907) was an Irish explorer in the British Royal Navy and discovered proof of

the fate of Franklin. This book was one of the most successful 19th century Arctic books and went through

many editions. By discovering that a navigable water route existed east and south of King William Island,

he located the most feasible North West Passage route and the one used by Amundsen.

Nansen, one of the most significant figures in the history of Arctic exploration, was originally

a naturalist. He decided in 1888 to attempt the crossing of Greenland, and with five companions,

including Otto Sverdrup, set off in June of that year. The crossing, by small boat, ski and sledge,

achieved many important scientific objectives, including meteorological observations, as well as

illustrating the ideal methods of Arctic travel. His most important achievements were on the Fram

Expedition of 1893-96. He established the nature and drift of the Arctic Ice-pack, having deliberately

allowed the ship, built to his own design, to be frozen into the ice. During the expedition, Nansen,

with one companion and 3 dog sledges, achieved the highest latitude yet attained (86o14').
