One of the first Hymnals by a Nova-Scotian

1. ALLINE, Henry

16mo, 16.5cm, 282p., in contemporary full brown sheep, gilt ruled panel borders with

small decorations in the center, gilt titles, some wear on the boards and edges,

endpapers stained, a fragile production making this a very good sound copy , rare

T.P.L. 6803. Alline was born in Rhode Island in 1748 and moved with his family

to the township of Falmouth, N.S. in 1760. After a religious experience graphically

described in his Life and Journals, he felt the call to preach and although further

education was not available to him, resolved to become an evangelist. From 1776 to

1783 he traveled the Maritime Provinces on horseback and in all weathers preaching

wherever he could. In August of that year he sought to carry his message to New

England, but he died of complete exhaustion in New Hampshire in January 1784. His

"New Light" church encouraged the singing of hymns and the lack of hymnals in Nova

Scotia caused Alline to write many hymns himself. This is the first edition of the

posthumous collection which was printed several times in New England. It is a very rare

hymn book, and one of the first written by a Nova Scotian.

Goff A-527. A early edition of an anonymous popular devotional work of the late

Middle Ages from the Austrian and Bavarian regions. Although frequently attributed in

15th century editions to theologian Johannes Gerson (1363-1429), in editions of the

16th century it was ascribed to German theologian Johannes Nider (c.1380-1438)

However, this edition, in the text, ascribes the authorship to the author of the "Imitatio

Christi", probably Thomas a Kemper. Earlier editions existed in Cologne (1470) and

Louvain (1479). A very scarce work of incunabula.

The firm Cowles & Mix. Solomon Cowles (1758 - 1846), a Revolutionary War officer

retired with the rank of General was a prominent member of the Cowles family. William

Redfield (1727 - 1813) of Middletown, possibly the grandfather of William C. Redfield

(1789 - 1857) of Middletown, scientist and meteorologist. Signed M.J. Russell, Justice of

the Peace. Verso signed by Sheriff Enoch Parsons. The Connecticut Historical Society

mentions Parsons as being appointed Governor of the Northwestern Territory in 1789,

however, this is incorrect as Arthur St. Clair was the first Governor of the Territory and

remained until 1802. Nonetheless, Enoch Parsons is an integral part of early Ohio history.

Parsons father, Major-General Parsons, was a close ally of Washington and served his

country on the front lines from 1775 to 1782. He drowned in the winter of 1789 when

his canoe capsized while on surveillance in Pennsylvania. Single sheet. 8 1/4 x 6.5",

Enoch Parsons (1769 1846) was born 5 November 1769 in Lyme, Connecticut.

He was the son of Mehitable Mather Par-sons and Maj-or General Samuel Hold-

en Parsons. In 1789, at only nineteen years of age, Parsons was appointed Governor of

the Northwestern Territory and Registrar and Clerk of the first Probate Court in Ohio. He

later resigned and returned to Connecticut. At age 21, Parsons was appointed High

Sheriff of Middlesex County; he remained in that position for about 28 years. Enoch

Parsons married Mary Wyley Sullivan (d. 1807) on 19 May 1795 in Philadelphia; they had

three children. He married his fourth cousin, Mrs. Sarah Hubbard Rosencrans, on 17

September 1808; they had one child. Enoch Parsons was the President of the Middle-

town and Hartford Branch of the Bank of the United States between 1818-1824; he held

the post again later, until the Charter expired. He was also a frequent member of the

Leg-islature. Enoch Parsons died 9 July 1846. [Connecticut Historical Society]

A rare and important work, containing one of the first accounts of Champlain's

first voyage to North America. The work consists of a chronological arrangement of

important events from 1598 to 1604, divided into 7 Books or parts of about 140 foliated

account of the French Expedition to Canada organized by Amyar de Chastres, Governor

Dieppe, and commanded by the Sieurs Du Pont Grave and Prevert, accompanied by

Samuel De Champlain. The expedition left Honfleur on March 15th, 1603, and after a

tempestuous voyage of forty days, reached Tadoussac. From this point Champlain

explored the Saguenay for about 30 or 40 miles, and then the St. Lawrence as far as the

Falls above the present site of Montreal. Returning to Tadoussac he explored the shores

of the Gulf, secured a valuable cargo of furs, and returned to France, which he reached

on September 20th, 1603.

This is one of the earliest accounts of Champlain's First Voyage to Nouvelle France,

being a succinct abridgement in the third person of Champlain's "Des Sauvages ou

Voyage de Samuel Champlain de Brovage"... which was published in Paris in 1603

immediately after the return of the expedition.

Book 7, for the year 1604, contains a long account of the foundation of the Jesuit

College in Paris and of the activities of the Order in Europe, Peru, New Grenada, the

Philippine Islands, China, and Japan, in addition to a further account of the French in

Canada.

One of many edicts by various kings of France to stamp out the proliferation of

duels of honour in France. The first ordinance in France against dueling was given in

1566, to little or no avail, and in 1626 a new edict under Louis XIII condemned to death

anyone who had killed an adversary. This is one of eleven ordinances against dueling

given during the reign of Louis XIV, further edicts showing a proliferation of the events.

An interesting government document drawing attention to a particular French

predilection - affairs of honour. Even Voltaire is noted as fighting a duel in his youth!

work first published in London in 1825. Oliver Goldsmith was born in St. Andrew's, New

Brunswick in 1794 and was the great nephew of Oliver Goldsmith, the English poet. The

Rising Village is written in imitation of The Deserted Village. He was Canada's first native-

Halifax, where he wrote The Rising Village. Rhodenizer states that his verse is "...

noticeably reminiscent of that of his great-uncle, the Irish born English poet".

An expanded collection over the London 1825 edition of the title poem. A work

of some note in the history of Canadian poetry. Described by Klinck et al (LITERARY

HISTORY OF CANADA) as "the first volume of verse ever published in Canada by a native-

born Canadian to receive serious attention at the hands of critics and literary historians.

Jean de La Fontaine, (1621–1695) was the most famous French fabulist and one

of the most widely read French poets of the 17th century. He is known above all for his

Fables, which provided a model for subsequent fabulists across Europe and numerous

alternative versions in France, and in French regional languages.

1798 Rebellion Participant - The Battle of Tory Island, Later a Participant in War of 1812

49. MANUSCRIPT LOG BOOK. By P.B.V. Broke

PRIVATE LOG, KEPT ON BOARD H.M. SHIP AMELIA BY P.B.V. BROKE. 3'D LIEUT.T",

AUGUST 1797 - NOVEMBER 1798. Small 4to. 25 pp. manuscript entries. About 35000 words.

This is a journal kept by a British hero of the War of 1812, from earlier in his career. It contains

an account of the Battle of Tory Island, which took place off the northwest coast of Ireland in

1798. The Battle of Tory Island was the last attempt by the French to launch an invasion of

the British Isles. Following this battle Wolfe Tone was captured aboard one of the French

ships defeated during the battle, and the rebellion of the Society of United Irishmen was

crushed. The journal was kept by Philip Broke on board the 38-gun frigate Amelia, formerly

the French frigate Proserpine, from her commissioning on 28 August 1797 through the

Battle of Tory Island in October 1798. Broke records Amelia's participation in the 1798

blockade of the French fleet in Brest, as she encounters merchant vessels, privateers, French

men-of-war, and dozens of ships of the Royal Navy. His journal ends with a first hand account

of the action that destroyed the French fleet sent to Ireland in support of the Irish Rebellion

-the so-called Battle of Tory Island.

While his style tends to be telegraphic, Broke's narrative is consistent with accounts

of this famous sea battle, and contains extra details as well. "saw the Strangers to leeward-

bore up & discover'd them to be an Enemy's squadron of 7 ships of the line & 8 frigates - one

schooner - we passed their line close to windw'd & ran on to engage two sail in the rear -

who proved to be the [HMS] Ethalion & [HMS] Sylph, observing the enemy's motions. We

join'd them on that service. AM… the enemy charged us we did not bear up till they were

within about 5 miles - then we made all sail, wind on Starb'd quarter, - only one of them

appear'd to gain on us - a large Rasée, frigate - she came nearly within shot in two hours -

the fleet discontinued chace & a short time later recalled the frigate - who fired at us afore

she hauled up - knowing from various informations that the enemy's squadron was destined

for Ireland, with about 4000 troops, arms &c'r - we were assured that they would not risqué

separation or being dismasted &c'r - upon our account, & therefore kept pretty close to them

- particularly at night"

P.B.V. Broke is, of course, best remembered as the commanding officer of HMS

Shannon, who on 1 June 1813, met and captured USS Chesapeake off Boston, mortally

wounding her commander, James Lawrence, but not before the dying skipper exhorted his

crew to "Not Give Up the Ship." Broke was the only victorious British commander in a frigate-

on-frigate action during the War of 1812.

Rare and important GREAT LAKES map first issued in 1643. According to Burden

it is actually the first printed map to show and name all five lakes, pre-dating the Sanson

map of 1650. The map is based on Champlain's map of 1632 improved to incorporate

names. Although the configuration and size of the lakes are incorrect, the map is of

seminal importance to the cartography of the region. "Lac St. Louis" (Lake Ontario) leads

into "Lac Derie" (Lake Erie) which is shown very small because Champlain, relying on

second-hand knowledge, greatly under-estimated its size. "Mer Douce ou Lac" (Lake

Huron) and "Grand Lac" (Lake Superior) are much more recognizable. Lake Michigan is

again confused and represented either by a small lake to the northeast named "Lac des

The first geological survey of Newfoundland was undertaken by Joseph Beete

Jukes in 1839-40. His task was most difficult as the interior of the British colony was

virtually unknown and therefore uncharted, except for the single track of W. E.

Cormack's crossing from Trinity Bay to St. George's Bay in 1822. His full geological report

first appeared in London in 1842 as part of his "Excursions in and about Newfoundland".

65. [OTTAWA]. Canadian Flag

A very large Canadian Red Ensign that flew over the house of prominent Ottawa

lawyer, McLeod Stewart (mayor of Ottawa from 1887 to 1888). A letter, showing

provenance, states that the flag was flown over Stewart's residence, Appin House, which

stood where the Museum of Nature is now located in Ottawa. Enclosed with: An Ottawa

newspaper, "Every Saturday" (Vol. I, No. 4) dated Saturday January 8th, 1887 that contains

on the front page an article on "The Progressive Son of Ottawa" on assuming his mayoralty

position.

Flag dimensions: 1m.36cm x 2m, 32cm, (53" x 92" or 4'5" x 7'.9"), the flag is complete

but shows wear from use (frayed along edges, several small holes & stains). The probably

date would be c.1880.

S. McLeod is written on the upper left edge along one stripe of the Union Jack..

McLeod Stewart was born in Bytown (now Ottawa) in 1847 to prominent Ottawa family that

owned a large part of Ottawa Centretown called Stewarton. Many of the streets in this area

are still named after the McLeod family. Stewart McLeod was an officer in the Governor

General's Foot Guards and his patriotism is reflected in this Canadian national flag. The Red

Ensign was replaced in 1965 as the Canadian national flag by the present maple-leaf flag.

One of the best views in this Ottawa series. Buffords fame came mainly as the

printer of the Currier Ives prints.

Homer, Winslow (1836-1910). "Probably the first book to include lithographs

drawn by Winslow Homer, who was apprenticed to Bufford's of Boston at the relatively

late age of eighteen, for a period of two years. The present work includes the

apprentice's first substantial published lithograph (the third plate, View of the Locks,

Entrance of Rideau Canal) which is initialed by Homer, and the large title vignette and

five other plates that are attributable to him on grounds of style". Tatham suggests that

"Interests seeking Ottawa's selection as the nation's Capitol may have been behind it or

The Ottawa and Prescott Railway, which linked the town to Montreal, might have

funded it in an attempt to encourage tourism.... ". - Tatham. Winslow Homer and the

Illustrated Book, 1992.
