President’s Message
Hello NBMA Members! Your NBMA Directors have been hard at work planning another fun summer, and we look forward to seeing you all soon. The NBMA is a 100% volunteer-run organization. The NBMA and its programming and events are a huge part of what makes Norway Bay so special and helps us all create memories across the generations. Several of our directors’ terms will be ending at the end of this season. We are looking for new people who are interested in bringing their talent, time and enthusiasm to the team. Whether you are new to The Bay or a several-generations-in member, there is no better way to help make the summer memorable. Please chat with me or any of our Directors if you'd like to get involved. Canoe Kayak
Summer is fast approaching, and plans are under way for another great canoe kayak season.
We are pleased to announce Bryanne Dawson as this year’s Canoe Kayak Program Supervisor, we know she will do a fantastic job leading a very dynamic group of instructors over the 6 weeks. Please watch for some new practice times for kids who wish to continue to work on their skills.
The Canoe-Kayak regatta will be Saturday July 21, and thanks to Ottawa River Canoe Club, we will have a second dragon boat for the event for head-to-head races. We will also be trying to target going to the Lucy Slade Regatta again on August 10, at the end of the year program for those who wish to try another regatta.
We look forward to seeing everyone out on the water this summer.

Aquatics
Swimming & Aquatics
I’m pleased to be starting my third year as the Aquatics Director and can’t wait to be up at the Bay!
Swimming Lessons
It is my pleasure to report that Natalie Graham will be our Swimming Program Supervisor this summer. She brings many years of Norway Bay experience and is excited to work with our staff and all of our swimmers. Staff are keen to get going and enthusiastic to work with you and your swimmers! Program scheduling remains the same as last year and the details are posted on the NBMA website (you need to login to access the scheduling details). We will be continuing with private swimming lessons, shallow and deep water Aquafit classes, adult swim and the “Bay Babies” (beach) program for young children. If you are unsure what level you should register your swimmer in, please see Natalie Graham at the pier any morning between 9:00-11:00 am and she can assess your swimmer and recommend an appropriate level and next steps.
Aquafit program - tickets continuing
Registration for our Aquafit classes can be done on a weekly basis on the website and we will continue to offer tickets for “single class” attendance. This will allow more flexibility for people who want to attend one or two classes a week. These tickets will be sold at the registration days in booklets of 5 tickets (cash or cheque only – not sold online). As last year, these tickets may be used for any Aquafit class in 2018 as long as there is space in the class. Priority will be for participants who have paid for the weekly program. Tickets need to be given to the instructor at the start of the class.
Pier Beach
Any questions or concerns with regards to the Pier Beach should be directed to the Bristol Municipal Office.
Looking forward to a great summer at the Bay!
Ann Arden, NBMA Aquatics Director

The summer is almost here and the planning for the Parks Programs is well underway. This summer the Tennis program will be led by Roberto Harris-Mostert and Karim Harb. Adult Tennis will be from 8:00am to 9:00am Monday to Friday followed by children’s lessons the remainder of the morning.
Field Sports will be led by Natalie Harb and run evenings Monday through Thursday.
Toddler programming will run Monday and Wednesdays from 7:00 to 7:30pm and Arts & Crafts will run Wednesday afternoons from 3:30 to 4:30pm.
The Arts & Crafts and Toddlers programs are included in your basic membership so there is no need to register, but please do bring your young children out for the fun.
Jacob Brasil will be running both programs as well as the Friday Night Movie Night in Centennial Hall. Once again, hotdogs and snacks will be available for sale at 6:30pm just prior to the movie, which will start at 7:00pm

Musical Theatre Workshops 2018
Calling all aspiring actors, dancers and singers ages 6-13yrs! The NBMA Musical Theatre Workshop for 2018 is Newsies. Newsies is set in New York City in 1899 and is inspired by the true story of the 1899 Newsboys Strike. Although participants may sign up for one week only, we strongly encourage campers to attend all three weeks. This is a WORKSHOP approach to the production and not the entire musical.
Get Art 2018 The following weekly art workshops will be offered by local artists and held on Thursdays at Centennial Hall from 4:30-6:30 and are open to all ages from 6 to 96 for $25/session. Week 1, Michael Peterson will teach participants how to make Birch bark canoes. Week 2, Kate Aley will teach painters how to use masking fluid with watercolours. Week 3, Chantal Dahan will offer printmaking. Week 4, Tanya McCormick will offer how to make monoprints and stickers and Week 5 Katharine Fletcher will teach participants how to make custom placemat [and/or coasters] for the cottage. All artists are invited to participate in the Big Art Show on August 9.
Norway Bay Bristol Historical Society Calendar

Welcome to the Treasurer’s Corner. The purpose of
which is to provide you with a brief overview of our
financial results and achievements for the fiscal year
ended December 31, 2017, as well as for related issues
impacting on the 2018 season.
To start off, we have some good news for you in terms
of our overall results for 2017. For the first time in the
past four years we are pleased to inform you that we
have ended the fiscal year with an excess of revenues
over expenses (profit/surplus) of $2,478! This can be
compared to last year, where we ended with an excess
of expenses over revenues (loss/deficit) of $8,296.
Total revenues for the year were $97,302 compared to
$82,224 for 2016, or an increase of 18.3%. This
increase was primarily attributable to changes in
program fees, but also because of increased sales of
NBMA logo merchandise. Our Member’s Equity (net
worth/accumulated surplus) is now sitting at $31,671.
We are often asked the question as to what amount of
Member’s Equity can we accumulate and still be
considered a federally incorporated Not-for-profit
Corporation. The Federal guideline for this suggests
that organizations such as ours are allowed to
accumulate an amount equal to the requirement to
continue operations for a period of up to one year
without receiving any revenues. Under this scenario we
would therefore be permitted to have a Member’s
Equity of some $100,000. However, organizations are
permitted to exceed this amount on the proviso that
funds are being retained for purposes such as future
capital expansion projects. An example for us in this
regard would be an extension to or replacement of
Centennial Hall.
On a more negative note, during the fall and winter
months we were unfortunately exposed to a number of
attempts by individuals to fraudulently expropriate
funds from our bank account. It seems that an
individual (or group of individuals) went into the hall
and stole some old blank cheques from our archives.
Fortunately, we were able to identify these thefts early
enough; worked with the National Bank and in the
end, we did not suffer any actual financial losses. There
was a total of fourteen fraudulent cheques processed
for an aggregate amount in excess of $25,000. The
matter was referred to the Sureté du Québec for
investigation and necessary action. We have since
closed the bank account in question and have opened a
new one with different encoded cheques.
For the current fiscal year, we do not expect to incur
any significant extraordinary expenses nor plan on any
significant expansion projects. However, the
Government of Québec has announced that the
minimum wage for the Province has been increased by
$0.75/hour to $12.00/hour effective May 1, 2018. This
will have an impact on our operating expenses for the
2018 fiscal year in the amount of some $2,500 and
accordingly, we have decided to increase the program
fees by a nominal amount to offset this additional cost.
If any of you would like a copy of the final Financial
Statements for the 2017 fiscal year, please feel free to
contact me at [email protected] and I will
send them to you either electronically or by mail.
We wish everyone a happy, safe and financially
prosperous 2018 season.

Norway Bay Bristol Historical Society We are always looking for new members who are interested in researching and preserving the history of Norway Bay and Bristol area, and being involved in our projects. The meetings are held at the Jack Graham Community Centre on Aylmer Rd. at 10 am every Wednesday, starting this year on June 27th. Anyone is welcome to attend a meeting to check us out, with no commitment.
Just a reminder that the proceeds from all of our events and projects are donated back to the community (Shawville Hospital, Bristol Volunteer Fire Dept, etc).
We post our events on the Norway Bay Facebook Page, and we have our own NBBHS Facebook page too!
Here's a list of the events that we have planned so far for this year:
Wed July 11th, 10 am: Guest Speaker Gloria Tubman (genealogist) with tips on tracing your family tree
• Everyone is welcome, no admission fee, coffee and tea provided.
Wed July 25th 10am to noon. Annual Coffee Party, Sale and Silent Auction
• This will be the third year of our Silent Auction, which has proved to be a very successful addition to our annual event.
• As most people are aware by now, the sale part of the day has been fine-tuned to Baking, books and jewelry.
• Closer to the date, we will be providing more information about the event and how you can contribute.
Wed Aug 8th 10 am Guest Speaker - Gordon Black (Log's End)
• As with the previous guest speaker event, everyone is welcome, no admission fee, and coffee and tea provided
New Project - Calendar for 2019-2020
• We don't have a calendar to sell this year, but we will be working on one for next year, and we are very excited about. More details to come.
• The calendar will run from July 2019 to June 2020, and unlike predecessors, this one will be colour.
• Pages will be artwork created by local children (16 and under),

**Centennial Park cleanup** is scheduled for June 23/24. Volunteers needed with trailers, shovels, blowers, rakes, and labour starting at 9am Saturday. Please let Ken know ASAP if you can help (819-647-2391) or (819-208-6247). If volunteers come in numbers and commit 2 to 3 hours, it will be an easy quick task.
If we do not receive sufficient commitment by June 10, the NBMA will have to hire a cleanup contractor.
In case you happened to misplace, as I did, your Municipal Newsletter, the municipal website is very informative! There you can find:
• Schedule for Waste and Recycling Pickup ( http://bristolmunicipality.qc.ca/) • List of what is accepted for recycling (under admin, transfer station and recycling - scroll to bottom of page. Worth checking out because it may not be quite the same as home) • The municipal newsletter! (scroll through graphic screens at top of home page) • A community composting service will be offered at the Transfer Station starting in May. Further information will be posted on the website.
Fire Regulations are under review at the municipal council at the request of the Bristol Fire Department. Look forward to stricter enforcement this season.
Also, bring batteries, usually 9 volt, for smoke detectors and make sure the detectors are functional.
Keeping Bristol Beautiful and Safe
Hats off to Dorothy Cowley who has once again taken the lead in this ongoing campaign. Many bags worth of litter have already been collected from the roadsides and work continues. If you need gloves or bags to do your part, contact her at 819-647-5462
Check trees around your property for broken hanging branches resulting from the recent windstorm.
Keeping the River Healthy
Just a reminder that respecting the native species that belong in or near the river is basic. For example, the clams (mussels) are working to filter clean the river. It helps if you leave them where there are or throw them just a bit deeper if you need to protect feet.
Plastic is (almost) forever. Try to ensure that any plastics you use on or near the river don't end up staying in it.
Report a Turtle - Project Carapace
If you see a turtle on or near a road or trail, take a picture and report it on line at https://www.carapace.ca/en/. The goal of Carapace is to identify hotspots where turtles are most at risk and use that information to take risk reduction measures.
Bristol Farmers' Market
Open 1- 6pm every Friday at corner of Aylmer Rd and Highway 148, starting May 18. Buy local!
