Introduction to CAN Bus
CAN stands for Control Area Network. It is a form of multiplexed wiring designed by Bosch and allows the linking of a number of control systems together, normally in a vehicle, so that they can share information. In the past it would have been necessary to have at least one wire for every signal on a vehicle making wiring looms bulky and expensive. CAN Bus multiplexing allows a large number of signals to be transferred digitally using only a pair of twisted wires.
Sharing of information on a CAN Bus also reduces the number of sensors that are needed. For example the engine controller has its own sensor to monitor coolant temperature. Using CAN it can share the temperature reading so that the information is available to any other systems on the car that are interested. One such system might be the instrument cluster, which would use the information to drive its temperature gauge.
CAN Bus has been used in road cars for over 15 years. Starting at first with the high-end prestige vehicles, it is now commonplace in virtually all European cars and is becoming more popular in the US and Japan.
While CAN Bus is a very efficient way of connecting control units in a vehicle, it does present a problem to anyone fitting aftermarket equipment to a vehicle. This is because signals such as vehicle speed (VSS) or RPM that used to be sent on separate wires can no longer be ‘tapped’ into directly.
Recognising this, we have developed a CAN Bus interface which is able to extract data from the CAN Bus and provide fitters with standard signal outputs such as speed pulse and tacho pulse. Producing an interface such as this is not a trivial task because each vehicle manufacturer encodes their CAN Bus information in a different way and quite often various vehicle models from each manufacturer will be encoded differently too. We are constantly working to improve our CAN Bus interfaces by analysing the latest vehicles and adding them to the database of recognised CAN Bus data. This means that each interface is able to automatically recognise the vehicle type that it is fitted to and extract the correct signal information.

We are continually developing new products and updating existing ones to ensure that we can supply the solutions to the very latest problems that occur in a now very complex world of the modern vehicle. If necessary, we can also develop systems for individual customers who may have specific requirements.

Function
The CAN Bus interface is designed to provide a vehicle speed signal for vehicles using a CAN Bus system. It is programmed to automatically detect the vehicle type and it will give a frequency output of approximately 1Hz per mph. The CB-6 CAN Interface is versatile multi output device for obtaining vehicle speed pulse, engine speed, illumination*, reverse gear*, handbrake* and ignition signals from most CAN Bus equipped vehicles. NOTE: The ignition output on the CB-6 is inverse, it is at 12v when the ignition is off and 0v when the ignition is on. This is so that the coil of a relay can be connected from a constant 12v supply on the vehicle to the output on the CAN interface and the relay will be energized when the output is low. Any relay with a coil impedance of 600hms or greater will work. *Dependant on vehicle configuration
Feature The CB-6 features built-in diagnostic LEDs to indicate CAN Bus status and speed pulse output to aid the installation process.

SINGLE TO TWIN INTERFACE
Function
Used for retro-fitting a tachograph to vehicles with electronic speedo. E.G. Ford Transit, Mercedes Sprinter, Peugeot Boxer etc.
Fitting
The option of how to connect to the existing electronic transducer is left to the particular fitting application. In most cases all that is required is to connect the Green/Yellow wire to the signal wire of the transducer. The other two wires may be shortened, bent back and then heatshrink applied to secure the armoured cable and insulate the cut off wire.
NOTE: a signal must return to its source, i.e. earth return. On some vehicles, rust or bad connection might make this a difficult path. It is possible to overcome this by using the Blue wire and connecting it to the earth of the transducer.

PULSE AMPLIFIER / DIVIDER
Function
This interface is designed to solve the problem of irregular and weak speed signals. In today’s modern vehicles it is not always advisable to just simply connect on to a speed signal wire. The speed pulse wire may be too weak or can be too heavily charged, which can cause problems with speedo’s not functioning correctly or EMS warning lights being activated. Using the DI104 interface can help eradicate these problems. The interface also has a built in frequency divider (divided by 4) and can be used on 12 volt and 24 volt vehicles.

SIGNAL PROCESSING UNIT
Function
The Signal Processing Unit is designed to accept and process speed pulse signals. Automobile manufacturers use different techniques to generate speed related signals. Unfortunately there is no standard for these signals. Rotary movement of the transmission or a wheel component is converted into a pulsating electrical signal. The technique used to generate this signal will determine its amplitude, pulse shape and frequency.
Module Information
Vehicle electrics often generate electrical “noise”. This can add to the transducer signal and produce spurious results. The SPU1 has three levels of input filtering. Switches 1, 2, and 3 on the 4-way DIL switch control this filtering. Function Switch Positions. UNIVERSAL TRANSDUCER
When involved in fitting retrofit on-board electronic equipment to vehicles, a problem arises in that the correct transducer is not always available in stock. The Hunter Universal transducer, supplied with end fitting kit, overcomes this problem. It can be used when speedo or gearbox fitting of custom-made transducers is not possible. With one crimping tool the whole job can be completed with the speedo cable in situ by semi-skilled labour. The transducer will accommodate both commonly used size inner drive cables and the different size outer cables.
PLEASE NOTE: THE FITTING OF THE UNIVERSAL TRANSDUCER CAN ONLY BE INSTALLED CORRECTLY BY USING OUR CP101 CRIMPING PLIERS, SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED FOR THIS PURPOSE. USE OF OTHER CRIMPING TOOLS WILL INEVITABLY MEAN THAT AN UNSATISFACTORY PERFORMANCE MAY BE ACHIEVED.

Transducers fitted with extension cables
On a range of the Hunter transducers an extension cable is fitted to overcome space restriction. As we have no control over the fitting of these items, no warranty is given on extension cables. The speedo cable run has been specially designed by the manufacturers to ensure long life. Since our extension cables are manufactured to exactly the same specification then, provided they are fitted correctly, the life span should be the same as the speedo cable. Please note care must be taken to follow as close as possible the original run of the speedo cable. No kinks, no sharp bends, no pressure points. As a rule of thumb, no cable should be bent in a curve less than 150mm (6 inches) radius and there should be no bends within 2 inches of the end ferrules. The original speedo cable will need to be repositioned to allow for the extra extension and it may be necessary to reinstall new clips and ties. NOTE: A kink or sharp bend will always result in the inner cable breaking soon after installation. The breakage of the inner cable will damage the inside of the outer cable, so the extension cable is scrap.

Transducers to suit Leyland/LDV/Sherpa vehicles As Leyland never appear to stick to a standard speedo cable, it means that either a 67H or a 72H transducer is required. Leyland speedo cable fittings change from month to month, or even week to week. Below are some guidelines to assist: * Remove the speedo head and disconnect the speedo cable from it. * Now examine the part of the speedo head from which you have just removed the speedo cable. There are two distinct shapes: 67H Speedo head Note straight parallel tube with groove close to the end. 72H
Note ramp approx. Speedo head halfway down and
groove close to rear of speedo head. If, after examination, it is established that a 72H type transducer is required, there is still one more fact required. The 72H transducer comes in two sizes of drive. The 72H4 equals a 4mm drive, the 72H3 equals a 3mm drive. That is the size of drive pin. The actual sizes are 2.7 to 2.9mm (= 3mm) and 3.1 to 3.2mm (= 4mm). Should you try to fit a 72H4 to a speedo head and it fails to fit completely on, unscrew the round tube on the end of the transducer by screwing it clockwise as it has a left-hand thread. Once this part has been removed it will expose the drive pin. Offer up the transducer to the speedo head and you will be able to see if the pin is entering the speedo head. If it does not then you require a 72H3. Carefully replace the transducer adaptor (anti clockwise) ensuring you do not over-tighten the part as this will break the threaded portion of the transducer. Note: if the vehicle is an LDV Cub then a 61H transducer is required, which fits at the gearbox end of the speedo cable.
47
IN-FIELD TESTING OF TRANSDUCER Standard 12 volt transducer The power supply must be fused by a 1 amp, or less, fast blow fuse. For 12 volt transducers, use a supply voltage of between 5 volts min. and 18 volts max. The suspect transducer is connected as in the above diagram and the transducer shaft is turned very slowly while watching the volt meter (AVO, etc). The reading for a 12 volt unit should alternate between 10mV (approx) and slightly less than the supply voltage being used. NOTE: on a supply voltage of 8 volts the typical reading would be 0.01 to 7.87 volts. on a supply voltage of 12 volts the typical reading would be 0.01 to 11.75 volts. On special 24 volt transducers the internal voltage regulator will maintain the voltage output at approx. 11.80 volts, so the range would be 10mV to 11.80 volts.

A security lock for you vehicle OBDII port
Official figures show keyless car crime is on the increase! Criminals can steal a car without the owner’s keys using a £30 hacking tool. This device is capable of reprogramming a blank key in less than a minute. Prevent this type of car crime by fitting an OBDsaver to your vehicle. Don’t just block it… LOCK it!
Currently there are OBDsaver locks available for the following vehicle manufactures:
AUDI ~ BMW ~ FORD ~ LAND ROVER ~ MAZDA ~ MERCEDES ~ MAN~ PORSCHE ~ SEAT ~ SKODA ~ TOYOTA ~ VW ~ more models currently in development.
Key features:
The OBDsaver remains permanently in place. Most other locking systems (steering wheel, shift lever or pedal locks) have to be attached after each journey.
Completely encloses and secures the OBDII port. More than 3000 key variations with side key entry for maximum protection against attack. Made from high strength Aluminium.
The OBDsaver is a security lock which prevents criminals attaching equipment to the OBDII port and hacking the vehicle by reprogramming a new key, bypassing the engine immobiliser or disabling the security features. When any servicing or diagnostic work is required, the OBDsaver can simply be removed using a unique individual high security key.

A security lock for you vehicle OBDII port
The Universal Plus OBDsaver is a security lock which prevents criminals attaching electronic equipment to the OBDII port and hacking the vehicle by either reprogramming a new key, bypassing the engine immobiliser or disabling the security features. The lock is simple to install and secured in place using four screws, then an extra layer of security is added which requires the correct security key to be used.
No hard wiring or cutting required, therefore it does not invalidate any manufactures warranty. Permanently stay in place unlike steering wheel locks or pedal locks. DIY installation, so there is no additional installation charge incurred. No software or coded equipment involved, therefore there is no possibility of thieves overcoming the
system.
When any servicing or diagnostic work is required, the Universal OBDsaver can simply be removed using the unique individual coded key.

TRANSDUCER WARRANTY
Below are some of the ground rules regarding warranty claims on transducers. 1. The power supply to the transducer must not be connected directly to the vehicle supply. It
should be connected to the unit to which the output signal is supplied, and the design of the unit will have incorporated protection against spikes in voltage supply. The maximum signal line current is 10mA.
2. The transducer magnet shafts are made of very high-grade engineering plastic, at a cost of
£14,000 per ton and are designed to withstand all normal turning forces (twisting) that a transducer shaft is subject to. It will give many years of service, it will not, however, bend! Bending the shaft while fitting will, in some extreme instances, cause it to break. The 61H is a prime example because in trying to locate the drive slot, some fitters try to bend the transducer round and break the shaft. We do not accept a broken shaft as a warranty claim on this unit.
3. The 65H is a very clever design in as much that it can be used both on Vauxhall and Ford front
wheel drive vehicles. Again, if the fitting instructions are adhered to no problem will arise. The transducer is now supplied in Vauxhall configuration, i.e. with a short protrusion of the drive pin. To use the same transducer on a Ford application, the drive pin must be placed in the other end of the transducer and, of course, the twin nut adaptors changed over as well.
If fitters fail to adhere to the instructions and accidentally fit a 65H in long pin configuration to,
say, a Vauxhall vehicle, then all the end float in the magnet shaft is forced against the inner body of the transducer. This will cause undue friction, lead to seizure of the shaft and a failed unit. Again we do not accept this seizure as a warranty claim.
4. We have transducers in our range, which have extension cables, similar and equal to the end
part of a speedo cable. These extension cables are removable from the transducer and are a replacement part.
Again, because we have absolutely no control over how fitters fit this item we do not
warranty the extension cable. If it is fitted correctly with minimum curvature and minimum bends it will work and last as long as any speedo cable.
5. Our universal transducer has an exceptionally strong and large shaft (as do all our range) and,
if fitted as per instructions and using the correct crimping tool, will last for years.
