    Van Gogh climbed up to Lefkes this year; Frida Kahlo, Picasso, Magritte, Tsarouchis and other great painters went along. They went to Marpissa, as well. nd the pupils of the elementary school got to know them under the guidance of their teachers Chryssa and Areti Katsantoni. I was touched by this summer's first exhibition. The little brushes, the little hands being carried away in the passion and movement of the painter filled me with optimism. Could this happen in Athens? Would the teachers have the feeling for it in the depressive urban environment? It isn't easy for these teachers here, either. They are deputy teachers like most tutors nowadays. They don't know where they will be next year, nor will they get paid in the summer. Why should they? Who cares about teachers, who cares about children these days?But life goes on... Let's listen to its pulse and get tuned. Have a nice summer!

    Kostas Gouzelis Odes for the lugger Athina

    A Parian by choice, with a life strongly attached to the sea, the architect Kostas Gouzelis tells us that the dream, freedom, love, the realization of his existence in the universe, pure like limpid fountain water came in his adolescent years and rested on a wooden sailing boat, indelibly putting their mark on his route.Thanks to this boat on which he lustfully ventured his first love-makings, he discovered the beauty and harmony that a human artifact can have.     Following your work over the last few years we see a distinct and repetitive use of the portrait and a common relationship between the white background and pencil drawing. What is the inspiration or starting point for this chemical reaction? The portrait has always appeared to me as a landscape through which I can wander and explore. The pencil backgrounds are extensions to this landscape and allow me to wander further. Using this combination of elements I can explore what is important to me, the human condition, identity and what it means to be me. I hope others find a similar use with them.

    You work in your studio which is in the beautiful village of Lefkes on Paros where somebody can visit you and view your work. In September the visitors of the island return to their origins and you continue to work and live there. Tell us a little about this experi-ence. During the summer months I like to have a welcoming studio for those who are interested. I enjoy the opportunity to meet people and to discuss my work and we often stay in touch. Although the door is usu-ally open it's best for anyone wanting to visit the studio to contact me

    Last winter you exhibited work in Germa-ny and had a big success because all your works were sold at the opening night. What does art require from the artist for this to happen? Hard work!!! It's all hard work. And of course you need to want to be successful. That's very important. Success not just for art but I think for everything that we do. A will to succeed is important and necessary. The art world is very competitive. For every gallery or exhibition space there are hundreds of artists wanting to be the one selected. It's not good enough to just make good art. You have to make the best art you can. You have to promote that art. You have to support that art. And then maybe you get the success. Selling out on the first night was a very rewarding experience. I'm working hard for the next one.

    This summer you will have an exhibition in the gallery anti on Antiparos. Does it require a different approach to the exhibi-tion in Germany? Every opportunity to exhibit my work is im-portant to me. Whether in Greece or abroad I always approach an exhibition with the same focus and commitment. I believe my work and its public deserve that from me. For the exhibition in Anti Gallery on Anti Paros I will be exhibiting new works that combine elements from my previous work with new approaches in technique and material. I will also be exhib-iting an installation which I am very excited about. The exhibition runs from 28th July until 11th August and I hope the readers of Parola will have the opportunity to visit.

    You teach art lessons in your studio and your students have the opportunity to be taught a lot and learn a lot. What do you advise our young readers that wish to start learning about art?My advice for somebody who wants to start learning art is to find an environment and teacher that they feel comfortable with. I think that's very important. They need to feel supported and encouraged while also feeling free to explore and develop as individuals. This is how I experienced being taught and it's the approach I use in my teaching.

    Alegre Eskaloni, the dynamic Head of the Municipal Library of Paros tells us about the various library activities and discloses her immediate goals.

    You have been the library Head since 2003. What has happened in these 13 years?The creation and development of the collections, their processing and promotion, development of cooperation at local and Pan-Hellenic level with scientific agents and other libraries, enterprises and persons, events for the children (Summer Campaign), for adolescents (Events for Ado-lescents), seminars for various ages and interests, training courses, exhi-bitions, book presentations, speeches, music and astronomy evenings, the setting up of the Public Information Centre offering information and services at multiple levels, and many others! One should mention the contribution of Yiannis Georgousis to the library since 2012.

    Who supplies the books?The Municipality of Paros finances exclusively the purchase of books at an annual basis. The follow up is related to the purely scientific work for which the librarians are trained. Continuous updating by authoritative sites and other electronic or printed sources, contact with publishing activities and reviews, loan statistics, being in touch with both internal and external events, contact with the public to get to know its needs and naturally donations by the public.

    Our target is to instill our vision- ed-ucation at all levels- to many more of our fellow-citizens.

    What can one do in the library, besides reading or borrowing a book?The library serves as a reading-room , either with our books or the books of the users. The users have access to computers, printers, a scanner, a copying machine, Internet for their computers, table games, an inter-loan-ing service, etc.

    In the recent years the library organized seminars on the use of computers and the social media.What groups were they addressed to and what was the response?The programme was called Swimming in the deep waters of the online sea and was for adults. The first year it was implemented in six libraries in the Southern Aegean as a pilot programme. It was organised and coordinated by our library and carried out exclusively by volunteers. Later it was ex-panded to the nursing homes. In both cases the response was astonishing!

    This years summer campaign for children and adolescents has been organized by the National Library. Which was your experience from the previous campaigns?This years Summer Campaign is the fourth. In the first two years we were coordina-tors for the South Aegean Libraries- in my capacity as Pioneer Employee of the Future Library company, an urban non-profit company which started the difficult task of coordination and innovation of the coun-trys public and municipal libraries with the financial support of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation.This years it is coordinated by the National Library of Greece.

    As Head of the Library, what plans do you have for the future?Im happy you asked about plans and not dreams! Ill try to digitalise the Closed Collection, with books on subjects about Paros and the Cyclades. I will streamline the premises so that we can hold events in its interior. My chief plan, however, is to further develop co operations which will benefit our library and strengthen our relations with the local society so that we can instill our vision -education at all levels- to many more of our fellow-citizens.

    In the recent years you live and work at your studio on Paros. Which was the main incentive for your decision?To Paros, this beautiful Aegean island, I came with my husband Petros several years ago and we took roots. (Now we are citizens of Paros). I was fascinated by the beauty and serenity of this island which could inspire me as an artist; I held many exhibitions oil, acrylic paintings, water colours-inspired mainly by the local environment. Opposite the exquisite island of Antiparos, we have the region of Eklisidia which owns its name to its many

    churches (eklisia=church)-its present name is Glisidia . The magnificent sunsets and the bucolic surroundings prompted us to create, with much love and hard work. a small house complex with a small church in the centre.I always wanted to take up interior and exterior designing and at last I had the opportunity to do so.The small church dedicated to PANAGIA (Virgin Mary) was a vow. With great devotion I created its icons, using the fresco technique. The painting of Panagia at the niche was ready, when I left for Athens. When I came back to Paros the imagehad been deleted. I realized that I should paint it again as it is nowadays with its look of mixed joy and sadness that surrounds you no matter from what direction you look at it. I keep my studio in Athens and I pay there frequent visits to be in touch with exhibitions and other art events.

    At Paros, in recent years we have intense cultural activities. Many theatre groups, performances, exhibitions, in general a growing thirst for art. How do you interpret this phenomenon?Art is Life. While the body needs nutrition in order to live, spiritual food is equally necessary for the human beings who seek to satisfy these spiritual quests.

    Greece is now in the sixth year of an unprecedented crisis. What is the most important thing these years have taught us?I have always maintained and I want to say it once again that Greece never dies. It is like the Phoenix which is reborn from its ash, Greece is Immortal!

    Which would be your advice to a young artist?Art is like breath, without it you die.

    The Archaeological Museum

    The Archaeological Museum of Paros was built in the fifties, on a lot that was donated by the Municipality of Paros and it is the most important archaeological museum of the Aegean.

    The exhibition was set by the late ephor of antiquities, Nikolaos Zafiropoulos. Finds from older and recent archaeological research on the island are displayed in the museum. Many of them come from excavations led by the Ephor of Antiquities, Fotini Zafiropoulou and since 1986 in collaboration with Yannos Kourayos, head archaeologist for Paros and Antiparos.

    The Museum exhibition develops in the two galleries, the small hall, the atrium as well as the area in front of the museum, where the Roman sarcophagi. The exhibition mainly includes marble sculptures, admirable creations of Parian workshops, carved out of the famous Parian marble, known as lychnites.

    The exhibits are arranged in chronological order and presented in order to highlight their aesthetic value as well as their historical and cultural importance.

    The most important exhibits include the Fat Lady from Saliangos (5000 BC), the marble slab from Vintzi, Parikia (700 BC), the oldest sample of grave relief from the ancient Greek art, the Gorgo sculpture from Agios Panteleimon, Parikia (6th c. BC), the relief with Archilochos in a funerary banquet (500 BC), the amazing statue of Nike from Kastro (5th c. BC) and the fragment of the Parian Chronicle, one of the most important works of Greek antiquity. The finds from the excavation in progress in Despotiko are displayed in the small hall.

    Panagia Ekatontapiliani (Our Lady of the Hundred Gates)

    The historic Byzantine church of Ekatontapiliani is located here, not far from the port, in Paroikia. It is architec-turally unique and one of the oldest, most significant, and best preserved monuments in Greece. And better yet, it is right here on Paros, the heart of the Aegean. It can be only compared with its equivalents in Constantinople or Thessaloniki. But should we call it Ekatontapiliani or Katopoliani? Both are correct as both names can be found almost simultaneously from the middle of the 16th century. Each name has its own meaning. Katopo-liani generally refers to the location of the church facing the old city of Paroikia. Ekatontapiliani means 100 doors or gates.

    he first thing the visitor sees approaching the church, is the tall white wall surrounding the complex. The wall has a height of 8.5m and a length of 252m, and two distinctive Aegean bell towers. Such protective walls were often built around sacred and important structures to safeguard them from invaders and pirates. Prior to this construction, the church sat free of other encumbrances, proudly displaying its pure harmonic lines and perfect proportions. This particular wall was built and finished in the 17th century along with the monk cells that adjoin the inner wall. This markedly changed the look, but gave sturdy protection. The beautifully landscaped meditative garden is a perfect frame for the large and capa-cious arcades that mark the entrance. Ekatontapiliani rises majestically be-hind, elegant in its severity, its exterior faade basically unchanged since the 4th century. During its 17 centuries of existence Ekatontapyliani has seen natural disasters, fires, earthquakes, invaders as well as two of the greatest Byzantine emperors (Constantine and Justinian) having put their mark on the creation of this magnificent church.

    The complex includes the baptistery, the chapel of St Nicolas and the tomb of St Theoktisti, patron saint of Parikia. In the atrium one can visit the Byzan-tine Museum of Paros.

    Despotiko

    Despotiko is a small uninhabited island west of Antiparos. An impor-tant sanctuary dedicated to Apollo, god of light and music, was founded there by the ancient Parians. There were as many as 22 shrines dedicated to Delian Apollo, the most worshiped deity throughout the Cyclades. One of them was the sanctuary of Despotiko. It was a religious center that attracted worshipers from the Cyclades, Corinth in the Peloponnese as well as Asia Minor, Cyprus and Egypt. The power of Paros during the archaic and classical period is confirmed by the excavation in Despotiko.With the local quarries producing the best quality of marble, Paros quickly developed, created a remarkable school of sculpture and exported marble and sculptors to all the impor-tant centers of the ancient world.

    Research began with great difficulty in 1997 by archeologist Yannos Kourayos, while systematic excavation just in 2002, after the pier was built thanks to Yannis Patelis from Antiparos. It was then that a treasury of 600 objects was discovered, buried under the floor of one of the rooms of the temple, now in the Archaeological Museum of Paros. The new finds that each year brings along, disclose a sanctuary dedicated to Apollo and to the goddess Hestia, who was the patron goddess of seamen in the classical period.

    Among the finds is a terracotta statuette from a Parian workshop also in the museum of Paros. The large size and fine artistic quality suggest that it is probably the cult idol of the original temple, representing the goddess Artemis or even Apollo himself.The excavation on Despotiko, which is still in course with the participa-tion of students of Greek and foreign universities, was classified among the ten most important archaeological discoveries of 2011.

    Delion

    North of Parikia, on a hill with an amazing view, lie the ruins of the sanctuary of Delian Apollo and Artemis. In its initial form, the sanctuary was quite simple consisting basically of an enclosure wall around a rock and the altar for the sacrifices. From this plateau the faithful could see the sacred island of Delos waiting for the signal to start here too, the religious ceremonies in honour of Apollo.

    Later, in the classical period, a small temple was built containing a colossal statue of Artemis almost 3 meters high. Numerous votive offerings were found during the excavations that can be seen in the Archaelogical Museum of Paros.

    The meeting with the archaeologist Fotini Zafiropoulou took place at the seat of the German Archaeological Institute, a beau-tiful neoclassical building by Ziller in the centre of Athens. In a few meters distance there stood in the past the Hellenic-French School of Saint Joseph at which she was pupil. Her knowledge of the French language as well as of English was the ticket for her first job as a French language teacher and also as a guide with license number five (!) during her student years.

    Many times our talk drifted away and all the stories she told me to give me the feeling of things disclose a life full of difficulties and adventures, duties and dangers, tiredness but also of great joy, a life like a fairy tale. Her life, dedicated for over a half century to archaeol-ogy and particularly to the archaeological research in the Cyclades, has been indeed an exciting life.

    Offspring of a Greek family from Asia Minor, she was born and studied in Athens. In 1959 she graduated from the Philosophical School of Athens University, as I read in an introduction for an event organized in her honor by the publishing house MELISSA. In 1960 she was appointed to the Archaeological Service at which she served for 35 years, 25 of which at the Ephorate of Antiquities of the Cyclades and Samos which included 35 islands as she herself told me.     further about her numerous international distinctions and her remarkable archaeo-logical work. Reading the titles of the speeches by her distinguished colleagues, I stop at that of Christos Doumas: He who does good, does good everywhere. Indeed I think of her as being useful everywhere, even in what she despised the most: bureaucracy. Lets see how she talks about this issue in her book To Syros. Paros, Naxos, Ios, Oia- Thira which describes, in a very humorous way, incidents of her life as an archaeolo-gist in the Cyclades: it was something beyond the imagination of a young archaeologist who sets out with dreams of a life full of tension and surprises to which the kind of science he chose will give a special meaning and endless joy it was a terrible office work, time wasting since the state archeologist has administrative duties from the payroll and the personnel leaves to the finding of credits for

    repairs in the museum buildings, the cleaning and maintenance of the archeo-logical sites.

    But then comes the excavation with the feeling of companionship and the human factor: we carried out the excavation with kotsakia (folk couplets), made up by the workers, which were very clever and humorous and described the situation with perception and accuracy. It was charming indeed. For such moments one could forget the drafting of scores of payroll documents and whatever else was demanded by the bureaucracy.Winding up, she says: If in these duties you add that one should have some knowledge of drafting and photography as well as of the relevant legislation so as to deal with the numerous lawsuits against or by various individuals, then the archeologist who is a state employee must be a little mad and with a high zeal to be able to do his job and have a personal life, as well. Indeed one should have a great zeal at that time to be an archeologist in the Cyclades; it took then two days with fair winds to go to Paros from Mykonos with an overnight stop at Syros and four or five days when the winds were strong and sailings were not allowed.

    She spent whole days aboard ships together with a typewriter to work during the trips along with Nicos Zafiropoulos, her later husband, who went from one island to another to organize even the mi-nutest details of the archaeological muse-ums of the Cyclades. When Zafiropoulos took over the Ephorate, there were three museums in the Cyclades, those of Thira, Mikonos and Delos, all dating from early in the century, and one at Vathi, Samos.At those times the finds from the islands were sent to the National Archaeo-logical Museum in Athens while most of them were piled in storehouses. Since 1960, thanks to the tireless efforts of N.Zafiropoulos and of herself, the Cyclades got their own museums. At the Museum of Mykonos, which was the seat of the Ephorate because of Delos, where the two of them worked most often, the work was done in polar temperatures with the sea, when it got rough, reaching up to the doorstep.Journeying and digging with the yearly winds in the summer, the southern winds in winter, staying at hotels without elec-tricity or heat, Fotini Zafiropoulou lived in the heroic era of archaeology. She fought

    against the waves, dug with a bottle of brandy in her pocket to resist the cold and lay awake for a whole night with a statuette and a knife under her pillow until dawn when she could take it to a safe place. Frequently when the excava-tion took place on uninhabited islands, the archaeologists stayed in tents and ate tinned food or lobsters they bought at very low prices from the fishermen, feeling richer than Onassis. Excavations on deserted islands offered other advantages as well: at the period of the junta we had the privilege to sing freely, many times screaming with enthusiasm because we could sing all the prohibited songs, espe-cially of Theodorakis, which if you were caught humming or even whistling on the street of an inhabited area, you were sent without further ado to jail. At Vathi Limenari (on the Kufonisia) only the stars and the waves could hear you.About the years of the junta and the archaeologist Spiros Marinatos, she will tell me during our talk: At the time of the junta the Archaeological Service suffered heavily because of Marinatos. He may have been a great archaeologist but

    he also harmed badly the Archaeological Service. To start with, he didnt like archae-ologists whom he described as commu-nists; he obliged us to speak in puristic Greek (katharevousa) while he did not allow women to take the exams for the Archaeological Service. He broke up the Ephorate of the Cyclades; out of the four archaeologists, none was left. He sent us to all improbable posts and in fact obliged Zafiropoulos to resign.

    She first came to Paros in 1959 as a young archaeologist (with a wage of 50 drachmas!) with Nikos Zafiropoulos, being the newly appointed Ephorate head of Cyclades and after having stayed for some days at Parikia, they left for Despotiko, two women archeologists, two workers from Naxos, the Ephorate Head and the then guard of the antiquities of Paros, Mihalis Gennadopoulos. At Despotiko they stayed in tents for several days until a dreadful flurry of wind literary sent them fleeing along with their tents. All this happened at the time when they came from Antipa-ros to take us with rowing boats and later with engine ones. To let them know that we needed to cross, we had to open the door at the small chapel of Ipapanti (at Punta)-that was the signal that someone wanted to get across. Coming back from Despotiko, they will do field research in eastern Paros, on the hill of Kefalos above Marpissa where they found hundreds of fragments of statuettes and broken pot-tery. The purpose of this research was to stop illicit trade of antiquities, I thought that as soon as our reports reached the Archaeological Service they would grant the necessary budget for excavations in the area. I dreamed that as soon as I was appointed archaeologist in the Cyclades, my first excavation would be on the hill above Marpissa. With time I found out that most dreams young people have, stay dreams forever.

    Since then she came to Paros many times, participating in many excavations, at Delion, Pithion-over the Asclepeion- and in many rescue excavations at Parikia. However the excavation she carried out at the Ancient Cemetery was the one that kept her to Paros and is unique not only in Paros or the Cyclades but in the whole of Greece. The cemetery dates from the 8th century B.C up to the 3rd /4th century A.D and lies in the north of Parikia at a level lower than the present town and the sea. The place is enclosed, frequently

    flooded and close by there is a small glass construction where some of the finds have been placed, mainly skeletons and urns.

    The excavation brought to light a Poly-andrio (mass grave) of the geometrical era with urns which contained the burned bones of 150 young men aged between 16/17 and 30 years who had been killed in a war conflict. It is a unique find up to date since the next polyandrion we know of, is the one from the Marathon battle in 490 B.C. Among the finds is the relief of a seated female figure of 700 B.C. consid-ered as the most ancient funerary slab of the historical years and is now at the Archaeological Museum of Paros. There one can also admire two geometrical amphorae with scenes of war conflicts which according to prof. N. Coldstream, a specialist on geometric pottery, change our knowledge about the beginning of ancient Greek painting.

    The way the cemetery was organized and the scenes on the amphorae disclose one of the earliest organized societies in Greece. Thus when I ask her what is her dream for Paros, she rightly tells me that she wants to see the ancient cemetery as an organized archaeological site like the local museum in front of the Cathedral, Naxos town.

    We talked about many more things including the fashion of holding exhibi-tions of the Greek civilization abroad. The exhibitions held abroad are something good but they are organized in the wrong way. Some works which are unique should not be allowed to travel. If they want to see Hermes of Praxiteles, they should come to Olympia.

    Winding up the talk with Fotini Zafiropou-lou I asked her about her present occupa-tions and dreams. She spoke to me with juvenile enthusiasm about the Association of Archaeologist EOS, in which she is presi-dent, and has 95 members-archaeologists. Its aim is to promote the archaeological science and the classical studies in our country. The role of the archaeologist in the contemporary era is important because the basis of a country is its past, she says... As N.Zafiropoulos said "The archeologist is being called upon to give to the public the sensation that the ancient is not just a stone or a pot but a living part of their own past on which their present is based on".     One of the most striking features of the eastern coast of Paros is the hill of Kefalos with the monastery of Agios Antonios on its summit. Kefalos and his lower twin, Antikefalos, oversee the straits between Paros and Naxos while the white-washed monastery on the summit invites the visitor to climb up the hill.

    So, on foot or by car, go for it. Its worth it. Getting on top, you will discover much more than the amazing view; an ancient Corinthian capital by the church and the ruins of towers, cisterns, houses and churches surrounding the 17th century monastery. They bear evidence of the past when the Venetians built this castle during their 330 year rule of Paros. Since 1207 when Paros became part of the Duchy of Naxos under Marco Sanudo up to 1537, when the Ottoman marine under the command of Barbarossa attacked Bernardo Sagredo and took the castle of Kefalos and the whole island, making 6 000 prisoners from among the Parians. It was then that Cecilia Venieri, threw herself from the castle to avoid falling in Ottoman hands, closing in this heroic way the Venetian period in Paros.

    The remains of the 13th-16th-century kastro of Kephalos lie today on the conical hill of Kephalos or Agios Antonios, named after the monastery dedicated to St Anthony, built around 1580. The site occupies the summit of the hill, which rises 230 m above sea-level with commanding views. Kephalos is similar in layout to other kastra of its period in the Aegean. The highest portion of the castle was once occupied by the Catholic cathedral church and the lords residence, with all the necessary structures that would ensure survival for the occupants of the site. The lower castle consists of two areas defended by an inner and an outer defensive wall, with rows of single-roomed houses built against them.

    the kastro divide the site into an upper and a lower level. Two building phases can be securely identified, predating the construction of the monastic complex of Agios Antonios around 1580. The inner defensive wall with an average thickness of 1.20 m was constructed during the first building phase and it encircles an area of approximately 6,400 m2. Entrance into the area within the inner defensive wall was through a gate located close to the south-eastern corner of the wall. Part of the inner defensive wall encircles a platform of about 2,300 m2 on the highest point of Mount Kephalos. This is the area now occupied by the monastery, but once occupied by the residence of the feudal lord or governor of the island. The outer defensive wall with an average thickness of 1.50 m seems to have been built

    during the second building phase and encircles an area of approximately 28,400 m2. There are two gates in the outer defensive wall; the south gate was the main one, while there was another one on the west side. The outer fortification wall increased the total area of Kephalos to about 35,000 m2.The presence of nine churches (three twin churches and three regular single-aisled ones) with associated domestic structures close to them determined the separation of the site into six neighbourhoods, each one focused around a barrel-vaulted chapel. House remains are to be found along the whole extent of the inner and outer defensive walls, while their condition and size varies. An old (originally medieval in date) paved path leading to the monastery runs through the entire kastro.

    The remains of three water cisterns with their lining were identified in Kephalos. The largest one is located within the inner defensive wall to the north of the monastery, possibly formed the

    basement of the rather large multi-storey tower. The cistern provided water to the occupants of the lords residence, while the tower must have been associated with the lords residence itself or even the Catholic cathedral now lying under the church of Agios Antonios. The ruins of a second cistern were identified south-west of the chapel of Evangelismos, it is also plastered over but rather smaller in dimensions. The third water cistern is located close to the south gate, to the left side of the paved path. The inner and outer defensive walls were strengthened by towers located at certain corners and built with roughly cut stones lined with mortar.

    Most areas within the kastro preserve a large number of humble structures built against the fortification walls, identified as houses occupied presumably by peasants. They must have had two storeys, making use of the fortification-walls height, and they seem to have had one or two rooms with doorways attached directly to the side-walls. Small wooden or stone external staircases must have led to the upper storey, the ground floor being used for stabling and/or storage. Houses are not regularly constructed and vary in size. The average size of houses ranges between 20 and 45 m2. Substantial ruins of houses in parts of the kastro suggest that their ground floors were vaulted.

    After arriving in Paros, the Venetians built Kastro in Paroikia as their residence and the administrative seat of the island around 1260. The castle of Naoussa was constructed in the later 13th or early 14th century, while a circular tower with firing apertures was added at the entrance of its harbour around 1500. The kastro of Kephalos already existed as a fortified site when the Florentine priest Christophoro Buondelmonti visited Paros about 1415-20, mentioning that the castle was located on a steep hill. The existence of the site in the early years of the 15th century is confirmed by the inscription above the doorway of the chapel of Evangelismos on Kephalos, which commemorates the names of the founders and 1410 as the date of construction.

    It is not easy to suggest a definite date of construction for Kephalos on the basis of historical information, but archaeological evidence suggests that the first phase of the kastro could be placed in the later 13th century. Distribution of surface ceramics dated from the 13th to middle of 14th century show a remarkably well-defined concentration within the inner defensive walls of Kephalos. The outer fortification wall of the castle must have been constructed during the late 14th century under the authority of Nicolo I Sommaripa, who moved the administrative seat from the castle of Paroikia to Kephalos. The site was besieged and captured by Barbarossa in 1537.     to the late 15th and early 16th centuries outside the inner defensive walls. Kephalos was never reused as a habitation site. Instead, a monastery was built in the late 16th century on the peak of the mountain and started to operate in 1642.

    The survival of structures against the defensive walls and the nature of the site suggest that the areas within the fortifications must have been fully exploited, housing a large number of people. The average size of its houses Kephalos is comparable with other defended settlements of the period on other islands. Moreover, given the total size of the castle (3.5 hectares), it would not be an exaggeration to suggest that 1,000 to 1,500 people occupied Kephalos at its fullest extent in the 15th to 16th centuries.     How can one know the history of a place?Usually through books, narrations and visits to museums or archaeological sites. Nevertheless, there are also other sources that we rarely make much of, although they hide significant riches. At Paros, two such sources are the family names and the coats of arms of the old noble families.
