Dear Parishioners, Congratulations as we celebrate the Pentecost . This is the Birthday of the Church and the force behind every mission in the Church. The Holy Spirit, who always proceeds from the Father and the Son, is also the Lord and the Giver of Life to every action of the Church and of Christians. Let us acknowledge today the presence of the Holy Spirit in our life and his Power graciously working in and through us. As we celebrate this years Pentecost, I wonder - a How can we, like the early Christians no longer be locked up in Ourchurch? b How can our Worshipping and Celebrations be extended beyond the Sanctuary? c How can our mission like that of the early Christians, reach out to the ends of the earth? As we ponder on similar questions, may the Holy Spirit rekindle the fire of love in us and renew the face of the Church in the world today. This Sunday, 50 days after Easter, marks the end of the Easter Season. We will now progress to the 9 th week in the 2 nd part of the Ordinary Time of the Liturgical year. In the next two weekends we will be celebrating the Holy Trinity and the Body and Blood of Christ consecutively. This weekend also ends our May Devotion and on 25 th May, the Bishops of Australia rededicated Australia to the protection and guidance of Our Lady Help of Christians. Challenged by the Coronavirus restrictions, where Mass had to be cancelled over health concerns, Australian Catholics are once again implored to seek the intercession of Mary Our Lady Help of Christians. We really desire to have you back to church as there are plans in place to support the safety, health, and wellbeing of parishioners, clergy and our staff. We are completing the checklist according to the Archdiocesan Work Health and Safety for church reopening. In addition to providing signage and hand sanitisers at the entrance of the church, we have reduced the amount of seating spots available within the church to ensure the social distancing requirements of 4 square metres per person. Our regular weekend Masses will resume by the weekend of 13 th /14 th June when we can have up to 20 people attend. Three evening Masses will be added to our weekday Masses which will also resume after the weekend of 13 th /14 th June. Parishioners will be encouraged to register onlineon an App which we will advertise next week (a few parishioners who do not have a computer will be able to phone the Parish Office). We will try at this stage to give everyone an opportunity to attend weekend Mass at least once a month. We will continue to live stream our 9.30am Sunday Mass every Sunday on Facebook and our Parish Website until the 13 th June when we will begin to Live stream the Saturday evening Mass. We will need some volunteers (under the age of 70) who will serve as Marshals to record each persons name, address and phone number, and as cleaners to sanitise every touch point after every Mass. Please call the Parish Office during normal office hours and nominate which Mass you can assist with. The Sacrament of Baptism can now be organised through the Parish Office with a limit of 20 people after 13th June. If you would like to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession), please phone the Parish Office on 3345 3766 during office hours to organise a time with one of our Priests. Dear Parishioners,

Let us acknowledge today the presence of the Holy Spirit in our life and his Power graciously working in and through us.

As we celebrate this year’s Pentecost, I wonder -

a How can we, like the early Christians no longer be locked up in “Our” church? b How can our Worshipping and Celebrations be extended beyond the Sanctuary? c How can our mission like that of the early Christians, reach out to the ends of the earth?

As we ponder on similar questions, may the Holy Spirit rekindle the fire of love in us and renew the face of the Church in the world today.

Pentecost Sunday: Year A

First Reading: Acts 2:1-11 Using language and images reminiscent of the giving of the Law at Mount Sinai, Luke tells the story of the coming of the Spirit to the Twelve, gathered with Mary in prayer, in the Upper Room. Just as God ‘speaks’ in a special way when the Law was given on Mount Sinai, so now, God also ‘speaks’ the gift of the Spirit.

Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 12:3-7, 12-13 Paul reminds the Christians of Corinth that the Spirit comes in multitude of gifts, but all for the good of the whole community and for the unity of the whole community.

Gospel: John 20:19-23 In John ’s Gospel, the Spirit is given not at Pentecost, but at the death of Jesus (19:30) and

here on the evening of the day of the resurrection. The ‘when’ does not matter so much as the ‘what’. What does the

Spirit bring when Jesus breathes it upon us: peace.

CHAPTER FOUR

Signs of Holiness in Today’s World

134. Like the prophet Jonah, we are constantly tempted to flee to a safe haven. It can have many names: individualism, spiritualism, living in a little world, addiction, intransigence, the rejection of new ideas and approaches, dogmatism, nostalgia, pessimism, hiding behind rules and regulations. We can resist leaving behind a familiar and easy way of doing things. Yet the challenges involved can be like the storm, the whale, the worm that dried the gourd plant, or the wind and sun that burned Jonah’s head. For us, as for him, they can serve to bring us back to the God of tenderness, who invites us to set out ever anew on our journey. 135. God is eternal newness. He impels us constantly to set out anew, to pass beyond what is familiar, to the fringes and beyond. He takes us to where humanity is most wounded, where men and women, beneath the appearance of a shallow conformity, continue to seek an answer to the question of life’s meaning. God is not afraid! He is fearless! He is always greater than our plans and schemes. Unafraid of the fringes, he himself became a fringe (cf. Phil 2:6-8; Jn 1:14). So if we dare to go to the fringes, we will find him there; indeed, he is already there. Jesus is already there, in the hearts of our brothers and sisters, in their wounded flesh, in their troubles and in their profound desolation. He is already there. 136. True enough, we need to open the door of our hearts to Jesus, who stands and knocks (cf. Rev 3:20). Sometimes I wonder, though, if perhaps Jesus is already inside us and knocking on the door for us to let him escape from our stale self-centredness. In the Gospel, we see how Jesus “went through the cities and villages, preaching and bringing the good news of the kingdom of God” (Lk 8:1). After the resurrection, when the disciples went forth in all directions, the Lord accompanied them (cf. Mk 16:20). This is what happens as the result of true encounter. 137. Complacency is seductive; it tells us that there is no point in trying to change things, that there is nothing we can do, because this is the way things have always been and yet we always manage to survive. By force of habit we no longer stand up to evil. We “let things be”, or as others have decided they ought to be. Yet let us allow the Lord to rouse us from our torpor, to free us from our inertia. Let us rethink our usual way of doing things; let us open our eyes and ears, and above all our hearts, so as not to be complacent about things as they are, but unsettled by the living and effective word of the risen Lord. 138. We are inspired to act by the example of all those priests, religious, and laity who devote themselves to proclamation and to serving others with great fidelity, often at the risk of their lives and certainly at the cost of their comfort. Their testimony reminds us that, more than bureaucrats and functionaries, the Church needs passionate missionaries, enthusiastic about sharing true life. The saints surprise us, they confound us, because by their lives they urge us to abandon a dull and dreary mediocrity. 139. Let us ask the Lord for the grace not to hesitate when the Spirit calls us to take a step forward. Let us ask for the apostolic courage to share the Gospel with others and to stop trying to make our Christian life a museum of memories. In every situation, may the Holy Spirit cause us to contemplate history in the light of the risen Jesus. In this way, the Church will not stand still, but constantly welcome the Lord’s surprises.

Act of Spiritual Communion (when we cannot receive the Eucharist)

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen

Care for our Common Home – Sustainable Living

Pentecost Sunday’s second reading “as a body is one though has many parts, and all the parts of the body, though many, are one body, so also Christ” reminds us of a story. Centuries ago, Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai told a story about a group of people travelling

together in a boat, when one of them took a drill and began to drill a hole beneath his seat. His companions were alarmed and asked, “Why are you doing this?” He replied, “What concern is it of yours? I am drilling only under my own seat”. The man did not see – or did not want to see – how his actions affected everyone on the boat. Seeing the true impact of our actions is a critical first step. Look this week on how our actions or lack of actions are impacting climate change and how this could shine a light on those most disrupted by climate change, for example our Pacific Island neighbours.

A VOCATION VIEW: "There are different gifts, but the same Spirit." Each of us has been graced with certain gifts of the Spirit. And they are active, if we utilise them for the building up of the Church. Name the way the Lord has gifted you.

ST VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY (Sunnybank Conference)

The St Vincent de Paul Society continues to assist the needy in the Sunnybank Community despite the COVID19 shutdown and social distancing we are currently experiencing. Persons requiring assistance, including parishioners can still call the hotline on 1800 846 643. SVDP in Sunnybank will be following up those calls for assistance by phone and making support arrangements subsequently without making physical contact through letterbox drops and other means.

Despite our normal funding options of the poor box and appeals being on hold, at the moment, we are very appreciative of anyone who has or would like to donate to help in this very trying time.

If you would like to contact and/or donate there are a number of different options:

Ring the Parish Office on 33453766 and arrange for a SVDP member to collect your donation.

Do an online donation to the SVDP Sunnybank Conference Account

Account Number: 100026096 BSB: 064786

Email SVDP Sunnybank on [email protected] (Oll = Our Lady of Lourdes)

Thank you again for your continuing support at this time.

KEEP CALM and enjoy the ‘Wind of Change’: draw close to God, be

creative, watch - how people would evolve to learn to live through this

time, coming up creatively with ways to do the things we love doing, as

even church and youth ministry will adopt some changes in the way we

deliver. Follow this page and Unite Sunnybank on Facebook

As the church doors are cautiously slightly reopening and youth group in person isn't back in action yet, below are some youth events from around the Archdiocese

in June that you may be interested in joining online! For more: Check online calendar
