Dear Parishioners,
It is wonderful that our borders are almost open particularly to those just south of our border. We are still allowed up to 100 people in our church for most activities. We are still required to maintain a 4 square metres of social distance in the church. We are now allowed to have up to 100 at Funerals, Marriages and Baptism.
We still require you to book for the weekend Masses on http://www.olol.com.au/massbookings.html. With the 4 square metre rule we are able to seat up to 90 people in our church. Most of our Masses have not been completely full over the last few weeks. The average numbers attending each Mass are as follows 6.00pm Mass Saturday - 55 people; 6.30am Mass Sunday - 35 people; 8.00am Mass - 51 people; 9.15am Mass - 71 people; 10.30am Mass - 73 people; and 6.00pm Mass Sunday - 55 people. As you can see there is room for more people at each of these Masses. I did ask people to book for Sunday Mass once a month so you may like to come more frequently, but you need to book. You can always check on Saturday to see if the Mass is full.
I announced at Mass during the week that you will no longer need to book for weekday Masses. You will still be required to give your name, address and phone number to the Marshal as you enter the church. The non-booking of Masses applies only to the weekday Masses, you still need to book for the weekend Masses.
We have also started praying the Prayer of the Church, Morning Prayer, before the morning Masses. We will begin praying the Rosary after the 8.30am Mass on Wednesday.
The Reconciliation Rooms are still closed. If you would like to celebrate the Sacrament of Penance (Confession), please call the Parish Office during office hours to make an appointment with one of the Priests.
Some of the activities of the parish have resumed with the normal 4 square metre rule in place. The Bible Study Group has begun meeting on Tuesday at 9.30am in the Media room. Adoration is now being held every Tuesday evening at 7.00pm in the Church. The RCIA groups are continuing to meet to continue their journey of faith. It is good that in some ways normality is starting to return.
Some of our youth came together last Friday night to resume gathering with youth and fun activities. Athira, our Youth Coordinator, has been attempting to keep in touch with the youth of the Parish during lockdown. With more being able to gather together the youth activities will return to normal. There is a good report on the fourth page of this newsletter about last Friday night's activities. Well done Athira!
We are still live streaming the Saturday evening 6.00pm Mass. Although the production is not totally professional we are continuing to try to improve the quality of the sound and vision. The sound is always a challenge so we hope with some technology to improve that very soon. We were very fortunate in the rebuild of the church to lay some wires in the ceiling for future cameras. We have now gone ahead and installed those cameras and we are waiting for the NBN to be installed in the church to be able to bring you a much better “production” of our live streamed Masses. We hope to be able to use the new cameras in the next few weeks.
The men of the parish are asked to keep 15th August free for an online retreat day. We will give you more details in the future of this retreat day which is being live streamed throughout Australia. There will be 4 one hour sessions for reflection and prayer. Keep Saturday 15th August free.
Thank you for your continued assistance for the Parish St Vincent DePaul Winter Appeal. The members of the Sunnybank Conference really appreciate your support. More details on page 3 of this newsletter.
As the men in the Parish were reminded in an email during the week, please keep smiling – SMILING IS CONTAGIOUS.
God Bless you, Fr Dan

Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time: Year A
First Reading: Zechariah 9: 9-10 Our reading from the prophet Zechariah celebrates the entry of the coming king to Jerusalem. The king who comes does not bring war and destruction, but peace and humility. Second Reading: Romans 8: 9, 11-13 In today’s reading, Paul reminds the Christians of Rome of the power of the Holy Spirit living in them: if the Spirit lives in us, then our mortal bodies have life. Gospel: Matthew 11: 25-30 Having finished reading the Missionary Discourse, Matthew ’s Gospel now presents
us with a variety of responses to Jesus’ call. In this Sunday’s Gospel Reading, those of us who labour and are
overburdened (and isn’t that all of us, at least sometimes?) are invited to carry the yokes of Jesus, where we will find
that rest which only he can give.
‘GAUDETE ET EXSULTATE’ Rejoice and Exult THE GREAT CRITERION
CHAPTER FOUR Signs of Holiness in Today’s World
IN CONSTANT PRAYER
150. In that silence, we can discern, in the light of the Spirit, the paths of holiness to which the Lord is calling us. Otherwise, any decisions we make may only be window-dressing that, rather than exalting the Gospel in our lives, will mask or submerge it. For each disciple, it is essential to spend time with the Master, to listen to his words, and to learn from him always. Unless we listen, all our words will be nothing but useless chatter.
151. We need to remember that “contemplation of the face of Jesus, died and risen, restores our humanity, even when it has been broken by the troubles of this life or marred by sin. We must not domesticate the power of the face of Christ”. So let me ask you: Are there moments when you place yourself quietly in the Lord’s presence, when you calmly spend time with him, when you bask in his gaze? Do you let his fire inflame your heart? Unless you let him warm you more and more with his love and tenderness, you will not catch fire. How will you then be able to set the hearts of others on fire by your words and witness? If, gazing on the face of Christ, you feel unable to let yourself be healed and transformed, then enter into the Lord’s heart, into his wounds, for that is the abode of divine mercy.
A VOCATION VIEW: Have you discovered yet that there is more to life than what only material things have to offer? We live in the Spirit. Only in the Lord can we find lasting peace. Speak the Good News.

Care for our Common Home - Sustainable Living
“Come to me, all you who labour and are burdened, and I will give you rest”. From Matthew’s Gospel today. This part of the Gospel is significant as we celebrate NADOIC week (National Aboriginal and Islanders Day Observance Committee). NADOIC week this year invites all Australians to embrace the true history of this country, a history which dates back thousands of generations. The very first footprints on this continent were those belonging to First Nations peoples. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people were Australia’s first explorers, first navigators, first engineers, first farmers, first botanists, first scientists, first diplomats, first astronomers and first artists. The theme of this year’s NADOIC week is ‘Always was, Always will be’. The First Nations people’s adaptation and intimate knowledge of Country enabled them to endure climate change, catastrophic droughts, and rising sea levels. All were managing land – the biggest estate on earth – to sustainably provide for the future. This week, let every family, gathering, Mass, and individual use an Acknowledgment of Country to pay our respects. You could say “we acknowledge and pay our respects to our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who have walked and cared for this land for thousands of years and their descendants who maintain these spiritual connections and traditions”.

Leaders, Teens and Parents alike were super-thrilled to start up again. In-spite of it being last day of Term 2, we had 17 of them turn up to break ice, have an outlet for all the highs and lows of CoVid experience so far, tried out some non-typical games (to play it safe, pun intended:), had a useful input session about authentically and pragmatically navigating through this unusual time. Small groups were vibrant with talks of how to validate (and not numb) how we feel at this time, acknowledging there are still choices and decisions in our control, welcoming peace (not like a new-age mantra, but from knowing/claiming God’s promises for our lives), and about keeping things in perspective (we have been through bigger). Was heart warming to see their cheeky (and determined - crutches didn’t keep Abby away) selves again. God bless our leaders - Kylie who came straight in after an exam that finished only at 7pm said, ‘hanging out with teens was her reward’! Tiana too came in after 2 exams that day, and Sarah between 2 night shifts with 2 hr sleep! Thank you also fathers Enoch, Raju and Stanley (Vocations Brisbane) for the surprise visit to share your excitement to see everyone again, and your lockdown experience of missing the community.
