THE DIOCESE OF SOUTHWELL & NOTTINGHAMGROWING DISCIPLES WIDER, YOUNGER AND DEEPER

A statement fromthe Bishop of Southwell & Nottingham,

the Rt Revd Paul Williamsand the Interim Assistant Archdeacon

Revd Canon Mark Adams

The Diocese of Southwell and Nottingham incorporates the City of Nottingham, the whole County of Nottinghamshire and five parishes in South Yorkshire. The population is 1.15 million – 51% live in the greater Nottingham conurbation, 31% in ex-mining areas and 18% in rural. There are 305 churches (252 parishes), served by 142 stipendiary clergy and licensed lay workers. In 2016 a refreshed diocesan vision was embraced across the diocese, recognising the imperative for ‘Growing Disciples: wider, younger, deeper’.

‘Wider’ in that we will seek to grow disciples in every part of the diocese, with no retreat from any community: urban centre; outer estates; rural villages; or market towns.

‘Younger’ in that we will seek fresh ways to harness the boldness and creativity of children, students and young people across the diocese, not least in Nottingham which is the 4th youngest city outside London.

‘Deeper’ as we grow in knowing Christ, so that as his disciples we can be an increasing blessing to the people among whom we live and serve in the workplace, family and community.

The Bishops Senior Staff, Bishop’s Council and Diocesan Synod have demonstrated their clear commitment to sharing in all aspects of this vision and strategy. In autumn 2016 more than 1,000 PCC members attended 5 vision evenings around the diocese. We have discerned a series of emerging priorities that will facilitate growing new disciples in every parish across the diocese. Compelled by the love of Christ by 2023 we will seek to:

Welcome 7000 new disciples into the fellowship of Christ and his church Commission 1000 younger leaders (especially 15-30 year olds) equipped and inspired to

serve the purposes of God in the Church and society. Plant or graft 75 New Worshipping Communities (NWCs) across the diocese to increase our

reach in telling the story of Jesus to all. Grow 25 larger Resource Churches with clear commitment to develop leaders, plant New

Worshipping Communities, and disciple the young. Serve and pray together as 1 Church contending for the gospel in every community and

sphere of public life in our city, county and region.

In this new chapter every parish has an opportunity to review its role within the diocesan mission, so that it can play a significant part in the strategic commitment to ‘Growing Disciples wider, younger and deeper.’ Skegby with Stanton Hill and Teversal offer an outstanding opportunity for a new Vicar who has the vision and commitment to grow Disciples and see the church making a difference in these communities. There is much here for a new person to be encouraged by as, with the diocese, we go another level of growth in numbers and faith. Bishop Paul has said: “It is my hope that each worshipping community will develop a compelling picture of its own future in God’s purposes with an expectation of growing numerically and in the scope of its mission. It is my prayer that the new Vicar of Skegby with Teversal will have the creative leadership and imagination to develop discipleship, plan for growth and reach out to the unchurched of all ages in each community.”

What we can offer … Three connected communities with significant opportunities for long term growth A visible Christian presence in each of our local communities, which a new incumbent will be

able to step into and develop. Excellent engagement with local schools and community groups. A committed and skilled team of lay leaders who want to work

with the incumbent to foster the churches’ potential. A breadth of worship styles across the different churches, with congregations who are willing

to experiment. The main service at St Andrew’s has a contemporary charismatic evangelical flavour.

An openness to the work of the Holy Spirit A desire to bring the hope of the gospel to meet the challenges

of loneliness, poverty and unemployment Friendly, vibrant communities of faith, with a track record of nurturing new vocations.

Our Vision ...In line with the Diocesan Vision, we want to see people become disciples of Jesus Christ and grow in their faith. In conjunction with St. Andrew’s School we are committed to “Put out into the deep” to increase God’s kingdom: Growing Disciples Wider: through our network of community

groups, and re-establishing nurture courses. Growing Disciples Younger: through encouraging and expanding our Toddler Service, Junior

Church and Youth Events. Our excellent links with local schools, especially St Andrew’s CofE Primary, means there is great potential in this area.

Growing Disciples Deeper: taking forward our network of nine homegroups and regular prayer times.

Can you bring...

A vibrant and joyful faith A willingness to share your life with us and be visible in our local communities Experience of nurturing faith in others The skills to grow younger disciples, including the potential to establish new worshipping

communities which are open to all ages. The gift of encouragement as we journey in faith together.

If so we can provide the environment to do this in exciting and surprising ways!

Our Benefice …

The united benefice comprises two Parishes: Skegby with Stanton Hill, and Teversal. There are three worship centres: St Andrew’s Skegby, All Saints’ Stanton Hill and St. Katherine’s Teversal with much overlapping of mission and ministry.

St. Andrew’s Church is situated on Mansfield Road, Skegby. It is a grade 2 listed building, with some sections dating back to medieval times. The church is in extremely good order with repair work being carried out continually. It has the advantage of an AV system and being a flexible space.

All Saints’ Church (Chapel of Ease) is located on Fackley Road at Stanton Hill. It is a stone building erected in 1900. The rear of the building has been converted to provide a social area which is used by the community. AV is also available.

St. Katherine’s, the parish church of Teversal,

Grade 1 listed, completely fitted out with 17th century furnishing. It is a tourist attraction under the auspices of English Heritage.

Where we are ....

The Benefice is situated on the north western side of Nottinghamshire. To the west is the beautiful Derbyshire countryside and Hardwick Hall. To the east are the Dukeries estates, Sherwood Forest and Newstead Abbey. Close by are the towns of Mansfield and Sutton-in-Ashfield. The M1 motorway (junctions 28 - 29) is ten minutes away giving quick access to Nottingham, Derby, Sheffield and beyond. The coal mines that used to surround the area are now mainly parkland for the enjoyment of the community. There is a rich mix of urban, industrial and countryside. There are many amenities including walks and cycling with the Teversal Trail and Brierley Forest Park.

The Vicarage is set in spacious grounds adjacent to St. Andrew’s Church. It was erected in 1973 and has been well maintained; the solar panels have been recently installed. It is well-equipped, having three reception rooms and four bedrooms. A footpath connects the vicarage grounds to the church.

We have a gifted lay team, including three licensed lay ministers, two retired clergy and an associate youth minister, means that the new Vicar will have the support needed to see these services grow.

Our groups include .....

The Little Fishes Toddler Service is every Monday afternoon during term time. There are babies and toddlers varying in age between 0 - 5 years; between ten and twenty children attend with parents or grandparents. With the Christian message running through the activities we play, do crafts and sing. It is a lively group with parents and children making friends and having fun.

Junior Church meets on a Sunday morning in St. Andrew’s Church and then the Parish Hall.

Messy Church meets at both Skegby and Stanton Hill monthly. These attract large numbers of children who have lots of fun playing games and creating things on a Bible theme.

Passing on Hope is our charity for youth work centred around The Zone, the Friday evening group for teenagers. Our trainee youth worker is very involved in this project along with our Youth Minister.

Housegroups are a very important part of our church life. There are nine groups in the Benefice, most of which meet fortnightly. We enable friendships in the Lord to deepen through Bible study, prayer and conversation.

20 Prayer is a regular 20 minute time of prayer every Thursday evening in St. Andrew’s Church.

All Saints’ Ladies Group meets monthly in All Saints’ with varied speakers and topics.

Christian Craft Group – meets every Thursday evening in the Scout Hut at Teversal. Many projects have been completed from wonderful garments to beautiful baby clothes and shawls.

The ‘Coffee, Chat and Cakes’ (CCC) takes place monthly on a Friday morning, in All Saints. Coffee and biscuits are free of charge – with refills as required. Chat – in a friendly atmosphere. Cakes for sale - all homemade and delicious. The worship area of the church is open for prayer and for people to light candles. The CCCs are an important part of our outreach into the local community – also providing a way of welcoming people into Church.

Parish Camp, New Wine & Transform. Skegby Parish Camp is an annual weekend away for the whole church family. The weekend centres around fun, games, barbecues and fellowship, ending with a faith lunch and ‘Camp Praise’. People from Skegby have regularly attended New Wine for many years and have been involved in the Transform Festival from its start in 2015.

The Parish Players is our amateur dramatic group based in the Parish Hall; it was started by church members over 50 years ago.

St. Andrew’s Church of England (VC) Primary School is a larger than average primary school that has been serving the village of Skegby for over 150 years. The school’s distinctive Christian character is enriched by our exceptionally strong connection and partnership with St. Andrew’s Parish Church. The church plays a crucial part in the school’s calendar, with the children and their families visiting throughout the year to celebrate key

events in both the Christian and school calendars. St. Andrew’s is a deeply caring school where Christian values and teachings are embedded in the daily life of the school so that pupils and staff display a strong sense of wellbeing and spirituality. The Head Teacher (right) says, “This is all expressed through our school motto ‘Push out into the deep’, taken from Jesus’ teaching to his fishermen disciples. (Luke 5) We are excited by the possibilities our link with St. Andrew’s School can offer a new Vicar.

The Vine Tree Charity Shop was born in 1993, from two members of St. Andrew’s congregation wanting to work within their local community. It is now established as a constant on Stanton Hill’s High Street. This year it has given away over £13,000 to various groups. The Vine Tree continues to flourish, living up to the motto: “serving people’s material needs, supporting community projects, spiritual support in a safe place”.

The Deanery …The new Vicar of Skegby, Stanton Hill and Teversal will be joining us at an important time in the life of Newstead Deanery; which covers a stretch of the former Nottinghamshire Coalfields – a proud part of our heritage. It is a healthy and supportive Deanery, committed to the “Growing Disciples Wider, Younger, Deeper” lead from our Bishops. Colleagues meet regularly at Chapter for support and prayer as well as to receive information etc. The deanery works in 4 clusters and this one meets weekly for prayer. Ordained and lay members of Deanery Synod work collaboratively and are excited by what God is doing here. There are many pioneering projects alongside a good number of occasional offices and traditional services. . Fi Shouler
