Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time Year B 17 June 2012 Padre Pio Parish Glenmore Park PARISH BULLETIN PADRE PIO PARISH STAFF “This is what the kingdom of God is like….” If you ask most Christians what they imagine the kingdom of God is like there is a good chance that you will hear a description of heaven, perhaps outlining a clichéd image of angels playing harps clustered around a golden throne on which God is seated, a place somewhere up in the clouds out of sight. This is an understandable response. After all, these images certainly have their basis in the scriptures, most especially in the book of the Apocalypse and are a mainstay of popular culture. Jesus never spoke of the kingdom of God this way. In fact, for Jesus the kingdom of God (also referred to as the kingdom of heaven depending on the Gospel being read) is not even a place and certainly not something that is concerned only with the afterlife. For Jesus the kingdom of God is something dynamic and which can exist in the here and now because it is within each of us. It is something that we as disciples of Jesus are called to bring into being. How? Through our actions, actions motivated by God through the Holy Spirit. Whenever we live out Jesus’s command to love we are building the kingdom of God right here and now. Whenever we let the Word of God find a place within our hearts and do its work, we are building the kingdom. Jesus speaks to us today in two parables comparing the kingdom of God to seeds which appear to be small and lifeless yet when planted in fertile ground and given ideal growing conditions will produce something that is beneficial for others. If we allow the Word of God, the Eucharist, our prayer and the positive influence of those around us plant a seed in us and then nurture it appropriately we cannot help but be Christ’s loving presence in the world and then the possibilities are endless! To live out our mission to build God’s kingdom requires a willingness on our part to give of ourselves. Our work is never done; we can never sit back and say we’ve “done our bit.” The actions required of us however are not necessarily extraordinary ones, just everyday acts which, when undertaken in a Christlike manner, can have extraordinary effects. How will you build God’s kingdom this week through an act of love? How will you show the face of Christ to another and plant a seed in them so that the kingdom can continue to be built into the future? “This is what the kingdom of God is like….”

If you ask most Christians what they imagine the kingdom of God is like there is a good chance that you will hear a description of heaven, perhaps outlining a clichéd image of angels playing harps clustered around a golden throne on which God is seated, a place somewhere up in the clouds out of sight.

If we allow the Word of God, the Eucharist, our prayer and the positive influence of those around us plant a seed in us and then nurture it appropriately we cannot help but be Christ’s loving presence in the world – and then the possibilities are endless!

A kingdom, not of harp-playing angels gathered around a golden throne but one right here on earth where justice, peace and love reign supreme and Christ’s presence is clearly evident to all humanity.

Gospel Acclamation:

Alleluia, alleluia! The seed is the word of God, Christ is the sower; all who come to him will live for ever. Alleluia! Gospel: Mark 4:26-34

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Mark Jesus said to the crowd, ‘This is what the kingdom of God is like. A man throws seed on the land. Night and day, while he sleeps, when he is awake, the seed is sprouting and growing; how, he does not know. Of its own accord the land produces first the shoot, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear. And when the crop is ready, he loses no time; he starts to reap because the harvest has come.’

He also said, ‘What can we say the kingdom of God is like? What parable can we find for it? It is like a mustard seed which at the time of its sowing in the soil is the smallest of all the seeds on earth; yet once it is sown it grows into the biggest shrub of them all and puts out big branches so that the birds of the air can shelter in its shade.’

Using many parables like these, he spoke the word to them, so far as they were capable of understanding it. He would not speak to them except in parables, but he explained everything to his disciples when they were alone.

The Gospel of the Lord.

Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

COMMUNION ANTIPHON:

There is one thing I ask of the Lord, only this do I seek: to live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life.

Next week

The Nativity of St John The Baptist Is: 49: 1-6; Acts 13:22-26; Lk 1:57-66,80

Entrance Antiphon O Lord, hear my voice, for I have called to you; be my help. Do not abandon or forsake me, O God, my Saviour!

First Reading Ezekiel 17:22-24

A reading from the prophet Ezekiel The Lord says this:

‘From the top of the cedar, from the highest branch I will take a shoot and plant it myself on a very high mountain. I will plant it on the high mountain of Israel. It will sprout branches and bear fruit, and become a noble cedar. Every kind of bird will live beneath it, every winged creature rest in the shade of its branches. And every tree of the field will learn that I, the Lord, am the one who stunts tall trees and makes the low ones grow, who withers green trees and makes the withered green. I, the Lord, have spoken, and I will do it.’

The word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

Responsorial Psalm:

R. Lord it is good to give thanks to you.

It is good to give thanks to the Lord to make music to your name, O Most High, to proclaim your love in the morning and your truth in the watches of the night. R.

The just will flourish like the palm-tree and grow like a Lebanon cedar. R.

Planted in the house of the Lord they will flourish in the courts of our God, still bearing fruit when they are old, still full of sap, still green, to proclaim that the Lord is just. In him, my rock, there is no wrong. R.

Second Reading: 2 Corinthians 5:6-10 A reading from the second letter of St Paul to the Corinthians We are always full of confidence when we remember that to live in the body means to be exiled from the Lord, going as we do by faith and not by sight - we are full of confidence, I say, and actually want to be exiled from the body and make our home with the Lord. Whether we are living in the body or exiled from it, we are intent on pleasing him. For all the truth about us will be brought out in the law court of Christ, and each of us will get what he deserves for the things he did in the body, good or bad.

The word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

Please pray for the following sick relatives and friends of our parishioners:

Saint of the Day St Thomas More - Friday 22nd

St. Thomas More, Martyr (Patron of Lawyers) St. Thomas More was born at London in 1478. After a thorough grounding in religion and the classics, he entered Oxford to study law. Upon leaving the university he embarked on a legal career which took him to Parliament. In 1505, he married his beloved Jane Colt who bore him four children, and when she died at a young age, he married a widow, Alice Middleton, to be a mother for his young children. A wit and a reformer, this learned man numbered Bishops and scholars among his friends, and by 1516 wrote his world-famous book "Utopia". He attracted the attention of Henry VIII who appointed him to a succession of high posts and missions, and finally made him Lord Chancellor in 1529. However, he resigned in 1532, at the height of his career and reputation, when Henry persisted in holding his own opinions regarding marriage and the supremacy of the Pope. The rest of his life was spent in writing mostly in defence of the Church. In 1534, with his close friend, St. John Fisher, he refused to render allegiance to the King as the Head of the Church of England and was confined to the Tower. Fifteen months later, and nine days after St. John Fisher's execution, he was tried and convicted of treason. He told the court that he could not go against his conscience and wished his judges that "we may yet hereafter in heaven merrily all meet together to everlasting salvation." And on the scaffold, he told the crowd of spectators that he was dying as "the King's good servant-but God's first." He was beheaded on July 6, 1535. His feast day is June 22nd.
