Luke 6.20
The Reason for our Hope By Most Rev. Richard W. Smith, Archbishop of Edmonton
Monday, February 11, 2019:
World Day of the Sick
Every year on February 11th, feast day of Our Lady of Lourdes, the Church marks the World Day of the Sick. In our churches around the world we offer prayers to Almighty God for healing of those suffering from disease. This day is also an occasion to thank
God for the gift of Catholic healthcare, and to ask his blessing upon the countless thousands of people who work or volunteer in our facilities.
In Alberta, we owe the beginning of our own provincial hospital system to communities of Catholic Sisters who gave of themselves heroically to establish good quality healthcare, especially for the poor and most vulnerable. Continuing to build upon their foundation today is Covenant Health. Fully integrated into the provincial system of healthcare delivery, it operates seventeen sites in
twelve communities, all under the sponsorship of Catholic Health of Alberta. Globally, the Catholic Church manages approximately one-fourth of the world’s healthcare facilities, and is the largest non-governmental provider of healthcare worldwide. Healing, both
physical and, above all, spiritual, was central to the mission of Jesus. It remains at the heart of the Church's ministry.
We ask God to bless the work of our physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and other healthcare workers, as well as those who serve through governance, administration and general support. We pray, too, for the chaplains who accompany the infirm with spiritual
consolation; for the many priests who, while attending to their parochial duties, are also on-call day and night to respond to urgent sacramental needs; and for the numerous parishioners who volunteer to visit the sick and home-bound with Holy Communion.
Implicit within the variety of activity, there is one common message that everyone involved in Catholic healthcare brings to any
sick person entrusted to our care. It is, in the words we heard from St. Paul on Sunday, "that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, and that he was buried, and that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures, and that he
appeared to Cephas and then to the twelve" (1Cor. 15: 3-5). In other words, we carry to the infirm the sure conviction that Jesus, whose healing of the sick foreshadowed his definitive victory over sin and death, remains with us always and calls us to surrender our weakness and need to the power of his love and mercy.
Finally, this day is an occasion for all of us to reflect upon our own spiritual health. In his 2019 Message for World Day of the Sick, Pope Francis praises the selfless generosity of those who volunteer in healthcare, and then turns the focus upon our own condition with this striking statement: "The joy of generous giving is a barometer of the health of a Christian." The good health of a
Christian disciple is shown in selfless concern for others; the need for healing of the soul is manifest when we live only for ourselves.
As we bring Christ's healing to the infirm, may his grace be a remedy as well for our own spiritual debility. As the Lord himself
said, "Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick." (Luke 5:31) In one way or another, that's all of us. We find our healer in Christ.

Respect for Life . . . "Blessed is the one who
trusts in the Lord, whose
trust is the Lord." Lord,
renew our trust in You as
we work and pray to
protect the lives of the
unborn, the elderly, the
sick and the disabled.
We pray for . . . . . . those who are sick, especially Aleyamma Thomas. May they receive the peace & healing of the Lord. . . . the repose of the souls of those who have died, especially Deomĕdes Grana, Martina Moraes, Rey Tagala, Corrina Armsworthy & Carina Palanca. May they rejoice in the kingdom of God.
Teaching from our Holy Father The Pope, as Bishop of Rome and successor of Peter, is the visible and perpetual
foundation of unity among the bishops and among Christ's faithful. It is the Pope's role as
Vicar of Christ and Pastor of the entire Church to guide the community of Christ's faithful,
to safeguard them in the truth, and to confirm his brothers and sisters in the faith.
Dear Brothers and Sisters: In our ongoing catechesis on the “Our Father”, let us continue to learn from Jesus how to pray as he taught. True prayer is made in the intimate depths of a heart visible only to God. It is a silent dialogue, like the glance between two
people in love. Yet in this way the Christian does not forget the world, but rather brings its people and its needs into prayer. We notice the absence of the word “I” in the “Our Father”. Jesus teaches us instead to pray: “your kingdom come, your will be done”.
The second half of the prayer then moves from “your” to “our”: “give us our daily bread; forgive us our trespasses”. This use of the plural shows that Christian prayer never asks bread for just one person, but always on behalf of others. In our prayer, then, do we open our hearts to the cry of others? We are all children of God, and at the end of our lives we will be judged on how we have loved.
Not a sentimental love but one that is concrete and compassionate, as seen in God’s word: “As you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me” (Mt 25:40).
General Audience, Wednesday, 13 February 2019: http://w2.vatican.va/content/francesco/en/audiences/2019/documents/papa-francesco_20190213_udienza-generale.html
Lord, we thank you for our family.
Bless each one of us in our uniqueness
And let us use our gifts and talents
to ensure unity and love within our family,
now and always.
Amen.
Happy Family Day!

Upcoming Dates
The prophet Jeremiah minces no words in today’s first reading: “Thus says the LORD: Cursed is the one who trusts in human beings … whose heart turns away from the LORD.” And the prophet’s “beatitude” resembles that of Jesus’ teaching in today’s Gospel reading when he proclaims: “Blessed is the one who trusts in the LORD, whose hope is the LORD.” Good stewards understand that what the world values is not consistent with Gospel values. They realize that God has placed in their midst all the gifts, charisms, and resources needed to bring Christ to a world desperately in need of his loving presence. But to exercise good stewardship over God’s gifts takes a great deal of trust. How does our stewardship reflect our trust in the Lord? What did we do today to give others hope in Christ Jesus?
