AIMS FOR THE SESSION
To get an insight into how Maths is taught at Lauriston.
To take away some ideas to support your child at home.
To demonstrate the use of IXL Maths and how best you can support your child to develop their key maths skills as part of their home learning.
The EYFS Framework explains how and what a child will be learning
to support their healthy development.
Children will be learning skills, acquiring new knowledge and
demonstrating their understanding through 7 areas of learning and
development.
Children should mostly develop the 3 prime areas first. These are:
•Communication and language;
•Physical development; and
•Personal, social and emotional development.
These prime areas are those most essential for a child’s healthy
development and future learning.
The EYFS Curriculum 2015
As children grow, the prime areas will help them to develop skills in 4 specific
areas. These are:
•Literacy;
•Mathematics;
•Understanding the world; and
•Expressive arts and design.
•These 7 areas are used to plan a child’s learning and activities. The
professionals teaching and supporting the children will make sure that the
activities are suited to each child’s unique needs.
•Children in the EYFS learn by playing and exploring, being active, and through
creative and critical thinking which takes place both indoors and outside.
The EYFS Curriculum 2015
Key Points
• Number sense involves number skills, number concepts and a positive
mathematical disposition.
• Spatial activities involving hands-on experiences provide the sensory input that
helps to develop mental imagery.
• Attitude is key. Children who see themselves as capable math thinkers and
problem solvers are on the road to mathematical success.
• The focus is on meaning, with skills used in context. The more connections
children can make, the better.
• Visual cues and formats support learning.
• Building mental imagery expands children’s ability to think in flexible ways.
• Bridges are built to new learning by first reviewing what the children know and
then connecting their knowledge to new goals.
• Emphasis is gradually put on making written records of the activities that can
be used for reinforcement in the classroom and at home.
TASK 2
Regrouping is essential in
understanding base 10 and place
value.
The regrouping game!
On your tables there are some dienes and dice. In pairs
roll the dice and take this
amount of ones.
When you reach ten ones make a fair swap with a ten
rod.
The winner is the first person to reach 30.
TASK 3
Breaking up numbers to 10 and within 10
is a key skill that children need to acquire
by the end of reception in order to
understand the number system.
The number bond game!
On your tables are some unifix cubes.
Have a go in pairs and see in how many different ways you can
break up a number i.e. 6
0+6
5+1
4+2
3+3
IXL Maths online assessment tool/ Home school link L
To keep abreast of trends we have invested in an
online maths programme i.e. IXL
• Covers all skills from reception up to year 13.
• Objectives are mapped out progressively.
• All children have unique log-in details.
• To be used at home as part of home school learning
to reinforce work learnt in school.
• Teachers are able to monitor children’s usage and
progress.
