NLBs Conditions for development of all languages created

Technical Committees (TC) in 5 specialist fields of language

TC:Standardisation, Spelling and orthography

All NLBs attended skills development workshop in methods and setting of rules to standardise languages (July) submitted draft documents on spelling rules and orthography

TC:Terminology development All attended workshop in March 05 in principle and practice of terminology and terminography. Ensured same theoretical background when verifying and authenticating terms. All received Guidelines document

TC:Literature and media Rules and criteria for prescribed books in schools compiled

Writers associations and reading clubs established

TC: Research Training in research methodology



NLBs TC:Language in education Quality of curriculum materials plus mother

• Collaboration with Usiba Writer’s Guild

to improve literature

• Funded adverts on 3 radio stations to

promote a newspaper in 3 languages

to promote reading and respect for

• Rules and criteria drafted for the

evaluation and prescription of books

for education purposes

Initiate studies and research to create conditions for development of languages

Conducted a conference in Sep 2005 to encourage language researchers to share information and stimulate debate on development and promotion of multilingualism – 220 researchers attended



Co-operation with other bodies • Department of Health and GCIS on

translation projects for brochures in 5

African languages

• Liaison with Nottingham Trent University (UK) and Indiana University on research information

• Completed draft list of 112 birds in

SiSwati (The Tinyoni Project – SA Birds names)



NLUs • IsiNdebele – 3 staff • English-isiNdebele dictionary –

completed 10,536 lemmas, defined

10,574 and 38 in final stage

• Letters A, B, C and L analysed and to

be rectified

• IsiNdebele-English dictionary – 5,765

lemmas collected

• Tshivenda – 3 staff • 1st volume bilingual – letters A-Z published

• Monolingual list of 6,000 lemmas compiled
