9 am – Online Worship Join worship on Facebook Live and at our website thegrovemn.church
All in-person worship at The Grove is suspended until May 10 due to COVID-19.
We invite our congregation to join us on Facebook Live during Holy Week and on Sundays at 9 am for regular Worship. Share with friends! Also you may
watch these services at a later time.
Then and Now – April 2020
We last shared an update at the beginning of January. How things have changed! The Core Team is working
diligently to partner with the pastors, staff and other leaders to help navigate during these turbulent times. We
thought it would be helpful to provide a snapshot of our journey between January and the end of March. Here is
what we have been engaged in and what we are doing to support the goal of providing ministry while keeping
everyone safe and healthy.
MANAGING AND SUPPORTING CHANGING MINISTRY PRIORITIES
Then
• Administratively responded and supported changing priorities
• Conducted Town Hall meeting
Now
• Partner with pastors to evolve service options as the directions from the Governor and President change.
• Support major decisions:
- In person worship cancelled at both campuses.
- Staff working from home.
- Services for both campuses being provided through video and live stream.
- Online technical tools such as zoom being used to support small groups and video conferencing.
- Care ministry services being extended through the hands, effort and love of many volunteers in
the congregation.
THE PLANTING PROJECT
Then
• Navigated negative publicity and misinformation based on the Planting Project strategy with assistance of
the leadership team, staff and support from the Conference.
• Implemented plans for ongoing worship resources on the Cottage Grove campus through May.
Now
• Planting Project pastor continues to be supported by leaders in Cottage Grove.
• Ongoing outreach to individuals within the Cottage Grove community through Facebook, videos and
ongoing contact.
• Ongoing prayers and request for individuals to be involved in the four Planting Project teams –
Operations, Launch, Support and Prayers.
FINANCES
Then
• Began budget development based on year-end report from 2019.
• Began to adapt forecast with transition of some Cottage Grove participants from The Grove.
• Held strategic planning session to look at short- and long-term goals and priorities.
Page 2
Page 3
Now
• Monitoring budget closely and making adjustments to align income and expenses in light of the impact
from the current coronavirus on the church and families.
• Developing plans for how to deal with the operating budget going forward.
• Reinforcing the importance of the generosity of individuals and families to the operations of the church
in order to be able to minister to others as we all navigate this crisis.
• Deciding to move forward with the Being the Hope campaign. We believe that the church needs to
continue to be a beacon of hope, especially at this time.
STAFF
Then
• Met with each staff member to review the past year, look at accomplishments and goals for the coming
year – a time for celebration.
Now
• With the closure of the church office and moving to on-line services, small groups online and cancelling
of any in-person group contact, Dan and Kelly to meet with each staff member to assess hours and
workload during the coronavirus outbreak.
• Supported decisions of Pre-School Board to mirror public school closure and move to on-line
curriculum in the short term.
GENERAL CONFERENCE
Then
• Hosted an evening with Superintendent Cynthia Williams to learn about the current denominational
strategy in preparation for the General Conference in May.
• Developed a communication plan based on The Grove philosophy and values in alignment with
the denomination.
Now
• General Conference placed on hold.
• Pastor Kelly and PRIDE Team partnering together to offer a 6-week online video study entitled:
Faithful and Inclusive.
Ongoing support of Building outcomes from the Campus Improvement Campaign
Then
• Approved taking down a diseased tree in the grove that could have been a hazard for the
pre-school children.
• Approved painting of the old chapel as the next phase of the painting project.
Now
• Because of safety concerns and lack of structural integrity, approved removal of the balcony in the
old chapel.

Even though the global General Conference will not
happen in Minneapolis in May, The Grove Pride
Team would like to provide a brief history as to the
topic of inclusiveness of LGBTQIA+ persons within
the United Methodist church. It all started in 1972…
April 1972 in Atlanta, Georgia, Russell
Kibler, a delegate to the United Methodist
General Conference from South Indiana,
stepped to the microphone with a question.
Before the body was this statement:
“Homosexuals no less than heterosexuals
are persons of sacred worth, who need the
ministry and guidance of the church in their
struggles for human fulfillment, as well as the
spiritual and emotional care of a fellowship
which enables reconciling relationships with
God, with others and with self. Further, we
insist that all persons are entitled to have
their human and civil rights ensured.”
Kibler wanted to know what was meant by
“homosexuals would have their human and
civil rights ensured.”
His question led to the first public debate on
homosexuality in the denomination and
ended with the addition to The Book of
Discipline: “The United Methodist Church
does not condone the practice of
homosexuality and considers this practice
incompatible with Christian
teaching.” (umnews.org GC2016 tackling 44-
year Stance on Homosexuality)
Since 1972, every global General Conference has
debated whether or not this statement should remain
in the Book of Discipline. Because of this statement,
the UMC has lived with a ban on same-gender
marriages and clergy are restricted from being in
open, same-gender relationships themselves.
In 2016, the debate at the global General
Conference was heated. The bishops asked that
discussion be halted before irreparable damage was
done among all United Methodists. The
Commission on the Way Forward was formed, and
created a recommendation which was presented at
the Special General Conference in February 2019.
During this conference, the Traditionalist Plan was
introduced and prevailed thus adding strength to
enforcement of the prohibitive language of the
Book Of Discipline. Two thirds of US delegates
voted against the Traditionalist Plan, but the plan
passed with support from many international and
conservative US delegates.
After the 2019 General Conference, churches,
regional Annual Conferences, and regional Central
Conferences committed to resist the new rules in
good conscience. Last summer, our own Minnesota
Annual Conference voted 85% to resist the rules
and aspire to become a fully inclusive conference.
As delegates head into the next global General
Conference, the inclusion of LGBTQIA+ persons
will again be a divisive topic. Nearly all delegates
recognize the denomination can no longer stay
together because we cannot resolve this issue. As
such, various plans to break the denomination apart
will be proposed. If the global General Conference
ends in a stalemate, regional Annual Conferences
will likely start to form new networks.
Inclusive and reconciling congregations seek
justice for people of all sexual orientations and
gender identities. As you watch the global
General Conference when it is rescheduled,
remember that our regional Annual Conference
aspires to be inclusive, and The Grove has already
affirmed our own Welcome statement (below).
As such, the restrictions on same-gender
marriage and LGBTQIA+ clergy will continue to
become irrelevant.

Pastor Kelly will lead this study. During the video study and discussion group,
you will gain an understanding of how to be both obedient to God’s Word
and fully welcoming to LGBTQ+ people in the church. We will navigate biblical
interpretation, ethics and cultural impact as we listen to faith journeys of members of
the LGBTQ+ community and their families.
Please register on Time To Sign Up, and you will receive a link to join in the study.

What The Grove believes: “ The Grove honors the
sacred worth and dignity of persons of every age,
race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity,
physical and mental capacity, education, economic,
and marital status.” This means we are inclusive of
ALL people. Not those that agree with us, ALL.
The Pride Team’s mission statement: “The Grove
Church believes that every person is a beloved child
of God, wonderfully made in God’s image. The
Grove Pride Team advocates for full inclusion and
affirmation of LGBTQIA+ people in our church
and community by initiating conversations,
celebrating diversity, promoting education,
advocating justice and challenging
anti-LGBTQIA+ prejudice, bigotry and hate”. It is
our purpose to educate our congregation, and
promote full inclusion of LGBTQIA+ persons in
our church community.

A Monthly Feature Highlighting Ministries We Support Through our Being the Hope Campaign
MINNESOTA COUNCIL OF CHURCHES The Minnesota Council of Churches (MCC) is a statewide ecumenical agency representing the
diversity of Christianity that is committed to forming respectful communities in Minnesota.
MCC works on building the common good by establishing and nurturing interdependent
relationships within and among Christians, churches and religious leaders throughout the state.
The programs they offer are centered on the belief we can make a difference, that the actions of
good people matter, and that we can grow a movement that will yet build the common good in
the world. Being the Hope contributed $500 to MCC in 2019.
FRIDAY BRUNCH Studies have shown that socializing is very beneficial for people experiencing memory loss. The Grove is
fortunate to offer Friday Brunch, a ministry for people navigating the stages of memory loss. Friday Brunch is
held at the Grove on the 2nd Friday of the month. It is an opportunity for individuals with memory loss together
with volunteers to enjoy two hours together sharing coffee, a devotion, memories, music, exercise and fellowship.
On occasion, The Grove preschoolers join the morning activities. Contact the church office for more
information. Being the Hope contributed $100 to Friday Brunch in 2019.
WOODBURY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL In 2015, a teacher in our congregation brought to the attention of the
Compassion and Justice Team that there were children at three of our
local schools who could not afford to pay for lunches or field trips. After
hearing this, the Committee voted to designate Being the Hope funds
annually to aid students in covering lunch expenses (which would be held
in the school’s Angel fund) or field trip scholarships at these three local
schools. In 2019, Being the Hope funds supported Skoolie for Royal
Oaks Elementary and Armstrong Elementary. Last year funds were designated to support the Angel Fund at
Woodbury Elementary. Being the Hope contributed $300 to Woodbury Elementary in 2019.
SILENT FRIENDS Silent Friends is a ministry that allows our pastors to offer a “helping hand” to families in need. Last year it
provided hotel vouchers, gas cards, money towards medical care and grocery store gift cards. The many families
and individuals served come from the community as well as the The Grove. Silent Friends is also supported by
individual church members. Being the Hope contributed $4,000 to this ministry in 2019.

VISITATION TEAM
Congregational Care Ministers (CCMs)
In-person meetings suspended
Congregational Care Ministers (CCMS)
are lay volunteers who are trained to
listen and provide emotional and spiritual
support to others. CCMs work alongside
our pastors in providing care by:
• Following up on prayer requests
• Meeting one-on-one with persons
needing a listening ear, offering
prayers and encouragement
• Offering support to grieving families
• Providing a presence on Sunday
mornings for connection and prayer
• Serving communion to members
who can no longer physically
attend worship
• Telephoning persons in need of
contact
• Visiting (hospital, homebound,
care facility)
If you feel called to care for others as a
CCM or if you or someone you care
about could benefit from a visit or call
from a CCM, please contact Carolyn

Protecting your Mental Health during the
Coronavirus Outbreak (taken from articles written by
Dr. Doreen Marshall and Kelsey Borresen)
A large part of anxiety comes from a sense of what we think we
should be able to control, but can’t. During times of uncertainty,
our mental health can suffer. It’s important to note that we are
not helpless. We can always choose our response. If you are
struggling, here are some things you can do to take care of your
mental health in the face of uncertainty:
• Separate what is in your control from what is not. Do those
things you can. Wash your hands. Stay at home. Limit
your consumption of the news.
• Keep daily routine as consistent as possible.
• Get outside in nature. Get some sun. Get some exercise.
• Challenge yourself to stay in the present. If you find
yourself projecting into the future, gently bring yourself
back to the present moment – notice the sights, sounds,
tastes and other sensory experiences in your immediate
moment and name them. Be mindful of present blessings.
• Stay connected (phone calls, emails, texts) and reach out if
you need more support.
• National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: 1-800-273-TALK or
text TALK to 741741 (Crisis Text Line)
• Pray! (see below)
Things to Create a Prayer Station at Home
• A Bible
• Battery-powered votive candles
• Pictures of people you are praying for
• Items from nature
• A globe
Involve your children in creating this. Use it daily as a place to
spend time with God in prayer.
Small Groups See Clippings to keep updated on open Small Groups.
For those small groups interested in continuing to meet digitally…
• Leaders are free to use their own Zoom account or even a different service they are familiar with and
have access to. Go for it!
• If you are a small group leader who wants access to the church account and support in setting it up, please
reach out to Tara Van Berkom at [email protected]. We are here to help!
• All small groups who are meeting should let Tara know (regardless of the video service you are using) so
we can track our small group numbers.
Grief & Loss Support Group via Zoom
We are all experiencing a variety of losses during this time - loss
of social contact, loss of loved ones, job loss, physical separation
from loved ones, to name just a few. Some of us may also be
experiencing anticipatory grief, which is a feeling we get about
what the future holds when we’re uncertain. It can feel like a
loss of safety.
We are offering a Grief & Loss Support Group via Zoom on Thursday mornings, beginning April 2,
at 10 am to provide people with a confidential and safe space to explore these feelings of loss and grief.
Facilitating this group will be retired chaplain, Al Kleinsasser, who is also one of our Congregational
Care Ministers. If you are interested in participating, please contact Carolyn Winslow at
Page 13
Guided Meditation via Zoom Saturdays, starting April 4, 10am
