Already Late This Sunday we hear two Gospels, the first being read at the entrance of our church (our newly remodeled entrance!) before the Palm Sunday procession. That Gospel ends with what we commemorate today — Jesus’ celebrated entrance into Jerusalem. What we do not hear is where Jesus went after entering the city. Mark writes that Jesus went to the temple area but, “since it was already late, he went out to Bethany with the Twelve.” Does the reference “already late” refer to the time of day? Or is Mark referring to the in-stitution of the Temple which would undergo destruction in the near future of which Jesus spoke before his own life is taken? Or does “already late” refer to our Lord’s own life? Palm Sunday marks the beginning of the end for Jesus. Soon thirty pieces of silver will change hands, an apostle will plan for betrayal, a table will be set with bread and wine for a last supper, a mob will form in the dark of night, soldiers will form a crown of thorns and a cowardly governor will wash his hand in a bowl to be filled with death. Jesus knew his time was short. Perhaps too, “already late” is a reference to you and me. Palm Sunday is this Sunday, Holy Week is this week, a week where many emotions about life and death — ter-ror, wonder, sorrow, joy and many others — bubble up in our lives. It is already late be-cause we have tried all our self-help fixes and have found them wanting. They offer a bounty of advice but little wisdom. Even the very trapping of our faith fails us at times. We come to church week after week, confess our sins, declare our faith and share the Eucharist and still face cynicism and doubt. We embrace the things of faith, but don’t feel embraced by that faith. We may not know how to save ourselves, but Jesus does. He knows our confusion, loneli-ness and fear. He knows that our only hope for life is for God to give us what we cannot give ourselves. That gift is the gift of life made new by the self-giving love of Jesus. This week we begin with shouts of “Hosanna” and end with shouts of “Crucify.” This is a week that changed human history by changing human lives and hearts. Come witness this change and be changed yourself. It is “already late.” Peace, Father Pat

A New Tradition With the completion of the Narthex portion of our construction project, we would like to begin a new tradition for the Easter Vigil. Utilizing our new Plaza (Sioux side), we intend to light the new fire and Paschal candle outside this year. We invite everyone to gather for the Vigil in the Narthex where the Vigil tapers will be distributed. From there, you will have a clear view of the events taking place on the Plaza. Once our Paschal Candle is lit, all will be invited to enter the darkened church with their tapers and await the arrival of the light. As the lit Paschal Candle enters the church, its light will be spent to all present. We sincerely hope you can join us in birthing this new tradition of St. Mary of the Woods.

St. Baldrick’s was a HUGE success! Together we raised over $30,000.00 for childhood cancer research. The afternoon was filled with music, dancing, raffles, and haircuts. Over 120 boys and men from St. Mary of the Woods Parish had their heads shaved to show solidarity with children who suffer from cancer. This event would not have been such a success without the help of many people. We had over 15 barbers come and shave heads from all over the Wildwood community. Even SMOW’s very own Kathy Collins, Maureen Callahan, and Kathy Weber picked up the clippers and buzzed some hair! Providing the entertainment for the afternoon was Ms. Foy’s IrishDancers. Krystyna Kaminski, Emma Pergams, Megan Kennedy, Elizabeth Laffey, and Katie Mundt showcased their incredible talents dancing for the school. Mr. Jon LeBaron was our wonderful emcee for the afternoon. Aside from raising over $2,000.00 and emceeing, Jon also had his head shaved! The Athletic Board was also on hand to help run the event. They were also responsible for bringing SMOW’s very own knight, Mr. Jerry Wickey. A big thank you goes out to St. Mary of the Woods National Junior Honor Society. 7th grade NJHS decorated the gym and were responsible for all the beautiful decorations that adorned our gym. 8th grade NJHS helped work our St. Bald-rick’s event. They took pictures, swept hair, worked line control, ran the raffle, and kept the crowd excited! Without the hard work of the NJHS, St. Baldrick’s Day would not have been so successful. Finally, Miss Jordan Swofford co-chaired this event and served as our Treasurer. Miss Swofford, thank you for all your hard work and dedication to this wonderful cause. St. Baldrick’s is an organization very close to my heart, and I thank everyone for all their hard work. Friday was a day that I will forever remember, not only because we raised money and awareness for childhood cancer research, but be-cause we all came together as a community and shared a common goal for a greater good. God bless the St. Mary of the Woods community! Sincerely, Mr. Dan Gargano

A HUGE thank you to Mr.Dan Gargano for introducing, organizing, and running this wonderful event for our SMOW Community. Mr. Gargano’s excitement and dedi-cation to this event is what truly made it so successful. Mr. Gargano spent countless hours to make sure every-thing ran as smoothly as it did. He is a blessing to our school community and we are truly grateful to him. Thank you Dan!!!

OPERATION RICE BOWL As we reflect on the passion of Christ, we remember that more than 44 million people in the United States are living in poverty. While 75% of our gifts to Operation Rice Bowl support Catholic Relief Services’ programs around the world, 25% of our contributions remain in our diocese to support local hunger and poverty alleviation efforts. Your prayers, fasting, learning, and almsgiving through Op-eration Rice Bowl make a significant difference in the lives of people in our community and in com-munities around the world. If you have not yet returned your Rice Bowl, please drop them off at the rectory at your earliest convenience… again, thank you so much for your generosity.

St. Mary of the Woods Faith Community BRICKED GARDENS OF GRATITUDE

With our capital campaign wrapping up and work moving along right on schedule, we are now accepting res-ervations for the two planned brick gardens that will be found outside the entrances on both the Hiawatha and Sioux sides of our building. Two different sizes of engraved paver bricks are being offered for perma-nent recognition. Due to space limitations, fewer bricks are available on the Hiawatha side so the pricing for that area has been adjusted accordingly. Details are included on the reverse side of this form. A position in one of our Gardens of Gratitude will make a unique gift – for special occasions, birthdays, an-niversaries, Mothers/Fathers Day, graduations, baptisms, First Communions, confirmations, weddings… The possibilities are endless. This is a wonderful way to honor or memorialize your own family, a relative, friend or colleague and take part in this historical moment for our Parish community.

Check enclosed for $_______ (please make payable to St. Mary of the Woods Parish)

I will not be purchasing a brick, but would like to help St. Mary of the Woods reach its $1 million goal by contributing $_______ enclosed. I understand that this donation does not entitle me to a brick paver.

Please complete the reserve side and return this form and your payment

as soon as possible as the brick garden appeal is being handled on a first-come, first reserved basis.

PLEASE NOTE… All donors to Continuing Our Tradition, Ensuring Our Future will be recognized through our Honor Roll of

Donors commemorative booklet which will be distributed at our dedication ceremony in the spring. The Gardens of Gratitude Brick Appeal is a separate initiative to help us reach our campaign goal.

The purchaser may select either the Hiawatha or Sioux brick garden but specific placement of bricks within these areas is at the discretion of the landscaper.

If multiple bricks are purchased for the same size/same area, complete one form for each brick. While wording is at the discretion of the purchaser, it will be reviewed by Parish leadership to ensure it is

appropriate for the sacredness of the area.

Saint Mary of the Woods Collection Information

EASTER SUNDAY COLLECTION NEXT WEEKEND St. Mary of the Woods depends on your generosity at Easter. Much of the good works that are accomplished here at St. Mary of the Woods would not be possible without the monies received at Easter.

PLEASE BE AS GENEROUS AS POSSIBLE!!

THANK YOU!

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE MINISTRY

Domestic violence occurs when one person at-tempts to maintain power and control over the other through physical, emotional, sexual, psychological and economic abuse. Many people in our society have experienced and continue to experience the terror of living in danger of being attacked by an-other family member. For generations, violence in the home was common and went virtually unchal-lenged.

Domestic violence is often shrouded in silence. People outside the family hesitate to interfere, even when they suspect abuse is occurring. Some people argue – mistakenly – that intervention by outside sources endangers the sanctity of the home.

Physical abuse includes being hit, slapped, pushed, kicked or beaten. Emotional abuse is often harder to identify but may include being threatened, harassed, stalked, called names, humiliated and intimidated by your partner.

An abusive relationship does not have to be con-doned or tolerated.
