The circular shape represents unity and equality. Like God, a circle

has no beginning and no end, and it symbolizes our continuing

effort to help one another. The shape also suggests a globe that

points to our engagement with

the world.

The three interlocking figures represent the equality of all

people without gender or race bias. They have their arms around

each other, symbolizing friendship, protection and service. The

number three suggests the three focus areas of congregational

vitality, structural racism and systematic poverty, as well as the

Trinity.

The color palette is bright, lively, friendly and energetic —

suggestive of our active commitment.

Finally, the legend “Matthew 25” below the symbol is the literal

identification of the mark. We use a handwritten font to make the

point that active engagement in the world requires human effort.

WELCOME Teri Thomas

PRELUDE Prelude in E Minor J. S. Bach

(1685-1750)

* PRAYER OF THE DAY

God of justice, you have shown yourself in this world in the

poor, the hungry, and the needy.

Make us willing participants of your grace and generosity,

so when you come again, we will know your face. We pray

these things in the name of Jesus Christ, our Savior and

Lord. Amen.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION Ruth Chadwick Moore

Almighty and merciful God, you call us to proclaim the

gospel, but we remain silent in the presence of evil.

You call us to be reconciled to you and one another, but we

are content to live in separation.

You call us to seek the good of all, but we fail to resist the

powers of oppression.

You call us to fight pretensions and injustice, but we sit idly

by, endangering the lives of people far and near.

Forgive us, O Lord.

Turn us to your will by the power of your spirit, so that all

may know your justice and peace, through Jesus Christ, your

Son, our Savior.

DECLARATION OF FORGIVENESS

We are forgiven.

MUSIC IN WORSHIP

Today’s opening hymn, No. 209, “My Song is Love Unknown,” is

a poem by Samuel Crossman (1624 -1684), one of the first English

poets to write a hymn whose text was poetic and not scriptural. The

music was composed by John Ireland in 1918. He composed it on

the back of a menu while at lunch with Geoffrey Shaw, who

challenged him to write a tune to go with “this lovely poem.”

During Communion, the choir sings the first movement, Kyrie, of

Mozart’s 1779 Mass in C Major. The movement begins without

Page 13: “Ask Me” badge. SERVICE FOR THE LORD’S DAYnorthminsterindymedia.s3.amazonaws.com/uploaded/a/0e8624144_155447054… · April 14 - Palm Sunday. Matthew 21: 1-17 tells the story

introduction, as the choir sings the first five measures. The

orchestra (piano in this case) then plays a brief transition, followed

by a short duet for soprano and tenor. The chorus returns for the

third section, repeating their earlier majestic phrases. Northminster

Chancel Choir, orchestra and soloists will perform Mozart’s Mass

in C Major (Coronation Mass) at 4pm, Sunday, May 5.
