January 15, 2009, was any-thing but an ordinary day alongthe Hudson River waterfront.

Just minutes after takeofffrom LaGuardia Airport, USAirways Flight 1549 was forcedto make an emergency landing inthe Hudson River near PortImperial in Weehawken, approxi-mately one mile south ofPalisades Medical Center. Thecrash landing was coined TheMiracle on the Hudson by NewYork Governor David Patersonbecause all 150 passengers andfive crew members on board sur-vived and were safely rescuedfrom the partially submergedplane by nearby watercraft.

Several of the plane’s passengers wererushed to Palisades for emergency care and weretreated for hypothermia and other injuries. TheMedical Center staff response was a well-coordi-nated effort thanks to its extensive disaster relieftraining and procedures.

New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine visitedPalisades just hours after the crash to check onthe passengers who were being treated in theEmergency Department.

During his visit, Governor Corzine commend-ed Medical Center personnel for their efforts dur-ing the crisis. He also acknowledged the heroicefforts of New York Waterway’s ferry workersand local fire and rescue personnel.

For several days following the crash, passen-gers who were treated at Palisades were featuredon national television news programs includingABC’s Good Morning America and CBS’s TheMorning Show. During their interviews, they con-sistently praised Palisades’ staff for providinghigh-quality and compassionate care throughouttheir stay.

The American Association of Cardio-vascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation(AACVPR) has certified Palisades’ CardiacCatheterization Center. AACVPR certifica-tion verifies that programs at Palisadesmeet the essential standards of care toeffectively reduce morbidity, mortality, anddisability from cardiovascular and pul-monary diseases through education, pre-vention, rehabilitation, research, andaggressive disease management.

Led by Stefanie Vaimakis, MD, FACS,FASMBS, bariatric surgeries are nowoffered at Palisades for individuals whohave been unable to achieve significantweight loss through diet modifications andexercise programs alone. Bariatric surgery,also known as weight loss surgery, refers tothe various surgical procedures performedto treat obesity by modification of the gas-trointestinal tract to reduce nutrientintake and/or absorption. Dr. Vaimakis spe-cializes in advanced laparoscopic tech-niques and laparoscopic bariatric surgery.

The U.S. Department of Health andHuman Services’ Health Resources andServices Administration (HRSA) recentlyawarded a $260,685 grant to Palisadesfor equipment and technology enhance-ments that will expand its OperatingRooms and Same Day SurgeryDepartment. This critical expansion willgreatly improve capacity and ensure thatmore than 13,000 more residents will beserved at Palisades without leaving ourlocal community to find needed services.It will also help ensure that Palisades isbetter prepared in the event of a home-land security issue in Manhattan.

The Institute of Nursing presented itsprestigious APPLE Award – AcknowledgingPhysician Partners: A Liaison for Excellenceto Maria E. Bornia, Vice President ofMedical Affairs at Palisades. The awardhonored Dr. Bornia’s work in supportingnurses and for being a tireless patientadvocate. Dr. Bornia has been a true vision-ary and trailblazer throughout Palisades’30-year history, and she is respected by herpeers for being relentless in her commit-ment to her patients and best practices.

Palisades’ Breast Cancer CommunityOutreach Program is working to provide afull circle of breast cancer education andcare to our area’s uninsured and underin-sured women. Since the program began inOctober 2008, more than 35 local womenhave already received free educationalmaterials, initial breast exams, and mam-

“First” Baby Returns!

On September 11, 1978, Steven Montes was the first baby everborn at the newly opened Palisades General Hospital. Steven,who now resides in Pasadena, California, recently visited rela-tives in New Jersey to celebrate his 30th birthday. During hisvacation, he read several newspaper articles about Palisades’30th Anniversary and decided to visit the campus. He wasextremely impressed with Palisades’ facilities and was amazed atthe growth and community development along the waterfront.

Jennifer Bailey, DPT; Grace Ricigliano, RN; and JohnNagatsuki, DPT, all have something in common. Each of themcan trace their Palisades experience back to a time when theyeach volunteered in the Physical Therapy & RehabilitationDepartment. Today, all three work as staff members atPalisades. Before joining the Palisades staff, John andJennifer graduated from UMDNJ with doctorates in PhysicalTherapy, and Grace graduated from Felician College’s Schoolof Nursing.

The PMC Foundation was one of only five non-profits to be featured during theWomen United in Philanthropy’s (WUIP) 4th Annual Fall Gathering. Several PMCFoundation and Medical Center staff members were in attendance to discussPalisades’ community outreach activities in southern Bergen County. ErinBrockovich delivered an inspiring keynote address that encouraged attendees touse their collective power to effect positive change in our local communities.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FORPATIENT FEEDING PROGRAMPalisades is looking for local residents who

would like to take an active role in supportingpatients who are physically unable to feed

themselves. Volunteer patient feeders play animportant role in providing compassionate

Help Wanted!Marco Velarde, 17, of Cliffside Park, has alwayswanted to be a surgeon. During the past year,Marco has received some great first-hand experi-ence while volunteering at Palisades in the CentralSupply Department. Marco organizes surgicalinstruments and delivers them to the OR surgeons.He has also completed a six-week “Central ServiceTechnician” introductory course where he learnedabout bacteria and how to protect against infec-tions. Marco is now in his senior year at CliffsidePark High School, is taking all honors courses, andhopes to be accepted for admission at ColumbiaUniversity. We wish Marco the best of luck!

Verizon Grant Supports Patient Safety

A generous $10,000 grant from Verizon is helping PalisadesMedical Center continue to be one of the safest hospitals in theregion for patients and Medical Staff.

Verizon’s philanthropic support has helped Palisades becomethe only hospital in Hudson County to install the new MedicationAdministration Check (MAK), a new state-of-the-art computerizedsystem that features barcode technology, like the kind you wouldfind in the checkout lines of grocery stories, to disperse prescriptionmedication.

“Verizon is committed to supporting technologies thatimprove the safety and health of our neighbors,” said Donnett A.Barnett, Director of External Affairs at Verizon. “We are proud tosupport Palisades’ efforts to implement the MAK system andimprove patient safety.”

The MAK system correctly matches patients against their medi-

cation orders, creates a record of when medications are given andraises “red flags” when there are potential problems. The systemhas many double checks in place to ensure that medications arebeing given appropriately and on time. It features bar-codedpatient wristbands, bar-coded medications, new medicine carts andlaptop computers in nursing, pharmacy and respiratory therapy.
