Patrick J. Kelly CupThe ECHL retired its playoff championship

trophy, the Jack Riley Cup, following the 1995-96 season and replaced it with the Patrick J.

Kelly Cup. Patrick Kelly, whose hockey careerspanned more than four decades as a player,

general manager and coach, is one of thefounding fathers of the ECHL and the first

commissioner in league history. The ECHL isproud to honor his distinguished career by

naming its most coveted trophy in his honor.

The Brabham CupHenry Brabham was a major force in profes-sional hockey in Virginia for more than 15years. The former mayor and businessmanmade his mark on the ECHL as one of the

league’s founders as well as the first owner ofthe Erie Panthers. Brabham worked tirelessly to

establish the fledgling league. The ECHL isproud to honor his hard work and dedication

by naming its regular season championshiptrophy in his honor.

Misc. ECHL Information

The conference quarterfinals will be a best-of-five game series with theremaining rounds being best-of-seven game series. The best-of-five series willbe a 2-3 format with the higher seed choosing if it wishes to host Games 1-2or Games 3-5. Teams that are less than 350 miles apart may choose to play a 2-2-1 format.

National Conference: Post-season berths will be awarded to the first-placeteam in each division and the next five teams in the conference, based onpoints. The division winner with the best record in the conference willreceive a bye in the first round. The other division winner will be seededsecond and meet the team that finishes seventh in the conference in the firstround. The other first round matchups will be the third-place finisher in theconference against the sixth-place finisher in the conference and the fourth-place finisher in the conference against the fifth-place finisher in theconference. The conference semifinals will have the first-place finishermeeting the winner of the fourth-place and fifth-place matchup and thewinner of the second-place finisher and seventh-place finisher against thewinner of the third-place finisher against the sixth-place finisher.

American Conference: Post-season berths will be awarded to the first-placeteam in each division and the next five teams in the conference, based onpoints. The division winners will be seeded first, second and third and willplay the eighth-place finisher, the seventh-place finisher and the sixth-placefinisher, respectively, while the fourth-place finisher and the fifth-placefinisher will meet. The conference semi-finals will have the winner of thefirst-place and eighth-place matchup will meet the winner of the fourth-placeand fifth-place game while the winner of the second-place and seventh-placegame will face the winner of the third-place and sixth-place matchup.

ECHL Frequently Asked QuestionsWhat do the letters ECHL stand for?In a change reflective of the nationwide presence of the ECHL, the East CoastHockey League changed its name to simply ECHL on May 19, 2003. Theleading professional developmental league for the American Hockey and theNational Hockey League, ECHL has an identity that is well known withinNorth American hockey circles.

What is the salary cap in the ECHL?The weekly salary cap for 2009-10 is $11,800 and the weekly salary floor is$8,300.

What is the minimum salary for an ECHL player?Teams are required in 2009-10 to pay rookie players a minimum salary of $360per week and returning players a minimum salary of $400 per week. Areturning player is classified as a player who appeared on a team’s season-ending or playoff roster or who has played in 25 or more professional hockeygames.

What is the NHL/AHL affiliate payment?The NHL/AHL affiliate payment for 2009-10 is $525 per week. Any affiliateamount other than $525 per week agreed upon with any NHL/AHL club willbe considered a salary cap violation. This includes excess payments forequipment, travel, etc.

Does the ECHL play overtime?During all pre-season and regular season ECHL games, if at the end of thethree (3) regular twenty (20) minute periods, the score shall be tied, each teamshall be awarded a point in the ECHL standings.

The teams will then play an additional overtime of not more than (5) minuteswith the team scoring first declared the winner and being awarded anadditional point. The overtime period shall be played with each team at anumerical strength of four (4) skaters and one (1) goaltender.

If at the end of the five (5) minute overtime, the score shall remain tied, thena shootout will occur. The shootout will be commenced immediatelyfollowing a one (1) minute rest period during which the players will remainon the ice. The teams will not change ends for the shootout.

How many players can dress for each game?Teams may dress a maximum of eighteen (18) players for each regular seasonand playoff game, of which two (2) must be goaltenders. No team can playwith only one designated goaltender on the lineup card.

How many veteran players are allowed in the ECHL?Each ECHL team shall be limited to four veteran players on its active rosterduring the hockey season (regular season and playoffs).

What constitutes a veteran player in the ECHL?A veteran shall mean a player, other than a goaltender, who has played in atleast 260 regular season games of professional hockey. Provided however, anyplayer signed to a NHL or AHL contract which contains an ECHL assignmentprovision shall be exempt from the foregoing rule. Notwithstanding theabove, any player assigned to an ECHL member team on a NHL or AHLcontract shall be deemed to be a veteran if said player is 24 years or older andhas participated in 260 regular season professional hockey games as of theopening day of the season of said year.

What games count towards determining a player’s veteran status?Games played for the Olympic or National Team of any country do not countas professional games and will not be applicable toward the 260 professionalgames needed to be classified as a veteran. The ECHL will use the Interna-tional Section of current and previous National Hockey League Year InReview books to determine professional games played outside North America.If a player’s statistics are included in this section, those games will beconsidered to be professional games played and applicable toward his veteranstatus. Games played in all professional North American leagues, past andpresent, will count toward a player’s veteran status.

What constitutes a rookie in the ECHL?A rookie is any player who has played less than 25 regular season games ofprofessional hockey.

What is the ECHL roster limit?ECHL teams can carry a maximum of twenty (20) players on their active roster(not counting players on injured reserve).

What is the injured reserve system for the ECHL?ECHL teams can have one player on the 3-day injured reserve and one playeron the 7-day injured reserve and an unlimited number of players on the 30-day injured reserve. Players may be moved from the 3-day injured reserve listor the 7-day injured reserve list to the 30-day injured reserve list, but may notbe moved back from the 30-day injured reserve list to either the 3-day injuredreserve list or 7-day injured reserve list.

In addition, when placing a player on the 7-day or 30-day injured reserve listretroactive to his injury, a team may only go back three (3) days or to the firstday after his last game played, whichever is less, including and beginning withthe current day. Once put on the injured reserve list, a player must remainthere the minimum number of clear days so that his total time on the injuredreserve list equals the length of the respective injured reserve list slot. Anyplayer who was moved from the 3-day injured reserve list or the 7-day injuredreserve list to the 30-day injured reserve list will have the number of daysalready served count toward his 30-day total. Players on injured reserve maynot skate in any pre-game warm-up.

What is the Christmas Waiver/Trade Freeze?There will be a waiver/trade freeze from 5 p.m. ET on Dec. 21 until 9 a.m. ETon Dec. 27. Players may not be waived or traded during this freeze, however,all other roster transactions are permitted.

When is the jersey reversal date?ECHL teams will wear their white jerseys from October 15-January 21 andtheir dark jerseysfrom January 22-April 3.
