Today we bring back the “Alleluia” after a long Lent of not using the word at all. Alleluia originates from a Hebrew word meaning “Praise ye the Lord.” The meaning of the word encapsulates the praise and the joy and the long break accentuates the intensity of bringing it back and the exuberance with which it is sung over and over again on Easter. Why do we sing such joyous songs and repeat Alleluia? Easter is the biggest celebration of the entire year for the Church. Jesus became human and then died and rose again for us, to unite us with God as God’s children and one day, we too will rise with Jesus to be with God. All of this is worth celebrating, and the Easter Season extends seven weeks all the way through Pentecost Sunday. Each of these seven weeks, we continue to celebrate and remember the amazing love that God and Jesus have for us. In the northern hemisphere, Easter also falls during springtime and allows us to see the beauty of God’s creation springing forth in new life and through this too we are inspired to praise God.

Our parish Bible Study group will be starting a new book Deuteronomy
on April 3rd The Israelites have passed through the desert and are poised to enter the Promised Land at last. Now, Moses
gives them his final instructions from God. All of this leads up to the coming of Jesus and God’s plan for our salvation. This is a great time to join us in our study of God’s Word for us. We meet each Wednesday morning at Crespi at
10:30. All are invited. Please join us!

HOLY THURSDAY has the story of Jesus washing the feet of his disciples and then we follow suit and wash each other’s feet – a reminder that being a follower of Jesus requires us to serve as well as to be served and that it may require some vulnerability. Holy Thursday also features the story of the last supper with Jesus saying to his disciples, “This is my Body, this is my Blood…do this in memory of me.” We do this in memory of him all year but in particular remember this last meal before his death on Holy Thursday. We then strip the church and move the remainder of the consecrated Body to an altar of repose and wait there with Jesus until his death. GOOD FRIDAY we enter into a stripped church that helps us to enter into the death of Jesus and experience it in our own lives. This is the one day of the year in which there are no Masses celebrated because a Mass celebrates Jesus resurrection and conquering death but at this point in our living out the story that has not happened yet. We retell the death of Jesus in a vivid and real way to remind ourselves of the sacrifice that Jesus experienced. THE EASTER VIGIL on Holy Saturday is the culmination of the three days of the Triduum. The service begins in darkness with a fire that we bless together as a community. From this fire we light the large Paschal Candle that is the Light of Christ that we hold together as a community throughout the rest of the year to continually remind us of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus that brought new life and light into our world. This candle is used for Baptisms, and funerals all year. The Vigil continues with the telling of all of the great stories of our faith history and our relationship with God, our salvation history. These stories connect the oldest and newest members that we then baptize and confirm into our faith and community. The Easter Vigil is a joyous celebration of new life and the resurrection that we will all eventually get to experience. We express our hope amidst the fears and challenges of this world because we have the light of Christ with us to light up the darkness.

Jewelry of Our Lady of BethlehemJewelry of Our Lady of Bethlehem The statue of Our Lady of Bethlehem is located in the chapel on the left side of the Basilica. It is an original artifact of the Carmel Mission and is California’s first statue. The oldest shrine of Our Lady on the west coast of America honors Our Lady at the birth of Christ. The Acorn Earrings she wears are solid gold and were an offering from the family of Tulita Westfall, the lady who returned the statue to the Mission. She was a descendant of the Boronda family. This family heirloom was made in 1773 by the first jeweler in Monterey, Manuel Trujillo, who was also a soldier at the Presidio. This is believed to be the oldest surviving piece of jewelry made in California. Mission curator Harry Downie said that they had to pierce the ears of the statute to attach them. The Silver Crown on her head was a gift of Don Juan Bautista de Matute. A naval expedition was conducted in the mid 1770’s to explore the northwest coast but because of the very heavy storms, it was compelled to return to Monterey. A week later, the officers and crews from the 3 ships in the expedition went to the Carmel Mission to have a High Mass offered in honor of Our Lady of Bethlehem and in thanksgiving for a safe journey. (She was the patroness of sailors and mariners). One of those officers was Lt. Juan Bautista de Matute, a young Spanish Naval officer. In 1798 (over 20 years later), a further offering was made by now Captain Matute in the form of a Silver Crown inscribed as a thanksgiving for relief from the storms. The translation reads: “From the devotion of Naval Lt. Don Juan de Matute, commander of frigate Purísima Concepcíon. He dedicates this crown in fulfillment of a vow, year 1798”. Capt. Matute was later killed at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. The tarnished Sterling Silver Rose was a votive gift from Mission Curator Richard Menn in 1982 in honor of his mother who was suffering from cancer. It was made by Tiffany Jewelers of New York in 1980. This insight into the Mission history was provided by the Carmel Mission Docent Association Museum Note* Our Docent Ministry has kindly donated $30,000 to enable the Parish to commence the restoration of this priceless treasure. Chaput offers a compelling reflection on the person of Jesus Christ, the nature of the Church, the urgency of radical faith, and the redemptive power of beauty – all in the spirit of Psalm 8 and the enduring words of Irenaeus: “The glory of God is man fully alive.” The Book Club meets Saturdays at 2pm at MacMahon Center. Refreshments are provided. All are welcome. Attendance and the book are free; a goodwill donation to cover the book and shipping is requested but not required.

… If you look closely at various elements in Crespi Hall, you may note the seamless faux finishing of wood grain created by Jon Stuefloten. All of the framing elements of Crespi Hall, the doors, benches, loft
and book shelves are finished in “his old technique” an effect created with tinted wax and specialized tools. Given Jon’s evident experience with Crespi Hall, we know that the current renovations are being carried out with a parishioner’s genuine care. To meet the needs of our Parish and our many ministries, the new renovation will bring some much-needed upgrades to the Crespi Hall kitchen. This will include a more purposeful layout and lighting with functional new features and commercial grade appliances. A new microwave and stove will be paired to an elevated double oven, allowing for easier cooking access. New cabinetry will offer better open air storage for supplies as well as industrial stainless-steel counter tops and prep surfaces. With the help of Jon’s team, we will also be installing a new triple sink with new fixtures. Maybe one of the most exciting aspects of the plumbing improvements is our new coffeemaker that will be linked directly to a filtered water supply. This means no more heavy water bottles to negotiate and replace. To complement this new feature, the reclaimed renovated space will house a small refrigerator ideal for coffee and donuts as well as a removable storage carts which fit within undercounter cabinets. This will help provide mobile hospitality services for our ministries and parish events. We are thankful to Jon and his team for their dedication and stewardship which has greatly benefited our Crespi Parish Hall!

The Divine Mercy of Jesus, also known as the Divine Mercy, is a Roman Catholic devotion to Jesus Christ associated with the reputed apparitions of Jesus revealed to Saint Faustina Kowalska. The Roman Catholic devotion and veneration image under this Christological title refers to the unlimited merciful love of God towards all people. Pope John Paul II, a native of Poland, had great affinity towards this devotion and authorized it in the Liturgical Calendar of the church. The liturgical feast of the Divine Mercy is celebrated on the first Sunday after Easter.
In an entry in her diary, Sister Faustina Kowalska stated that anyone who participates in the Mass and receives the sacrament of Confession and the Eucharist on this day is assured by Jesus of full remission of their sins and punishments.
