Always Forward, Never Back

We celebrate today what is popularly called the Feast of Christ the King (the official Church name is The Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe). In this particular year 2016, however, it is a greater celebration than usual. As always we commemorate the fact that our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ is indeed the King of the Universe.

In his encyclical establishing this observation in the Church (this only occurred in 1925, some 91 years ago) Pope Pius XI declared, “He (Jesus) must reign in our minds, which should assent with perfect submission and firm belief to revealed truths and to the doctrines of Christ. He must reign in our wills, which should obey the laws and precepts of God. He must reign in our hearts, which should spurn natural desires and love God above all things.” His point was that Christ needs to be at the center of our lives, which is exactly what stewardship calls for — living Christ-centered lives.

It was Pope Paul VI who moved this time to rejoice to this date, which is also the final Sunday of our liturgical year, as Advent and the new Church year begin next week. Finally, today also marks the culmination of our Holy Year of Mercy. The word “mercy” appears some 276 times in the Bible (almost the same as the word “truth”). Jesus told us it is never too late for mercy, for conversion, for making Him the center of our lives.

Docent Corner On 20 November 1818, the city of Monterey was attacked by Argentine corasir Hippolyte de Bouchard. He occupied the city and raised the Argentine flag over Monterey for a short period of time. Known locally as the “Pirate Bouchard,” he is remembered as a hero and a patriot in his second homeland.

Bouchard was a French sailor and corsair who, disillusioned with the way the French Revolution was going, went to Argentina in 1809 to aid in their revolution with Spain. His efforts on the high seas earned him Argentine citizenship in 1813.

In 1817, he began raiding the coast of Spanish Alta California. Word of an attack reached Monterey and the Spanish garrison went to their fighting positions and cannons. The women, children and men unfit to fight were sent to Soledad. The padres at the Carmel Mission retreated far up the Carmel Valley to a place called San Clemente on what is now Rancho San Carlos.

After an exchange of cannon fire between the ships and the shore garrison, Bouchard landed 400 men the next day near what is now the Hopkins Marine Station. They captured the fortifications and the presidio. They ransacked the city for the next 6 days destroying the presidio, the governor's residence and Spanish houses and took everything they could carry from the homes. The population was not harmed and neither was the property of any Americans. Bouchard attacked only the properties of the Spanish administration since they were in a war for independence with Spain. There is no known record if he or his men went to the Carmel Mission.

Bouchard also attacked the Spanish settlements in the Santa Barbara area and then he sailed away. He continued to sail and fight for Argentina, Peru and Chile but he never came back to California.

This insight into the Mission history was provided by the Carmel Mission Docent Association.

Bitten Falge Farm Workers Program Dear Parishioners:

A reminder that the first Sunday of Advent is November 27th and the members of the Steering Committee will be handing out empty grocery bags for you to fill and return for our farm worker families.

Also, the Giving Tree will be set up in the back of the Basilica, with little ornaments attached.

Each one will bear the name of a farm family child, his or her age and the requested gift for you to fulfill.

Your gift should cost no more $25 and for those children who request a gift card please put the card (with perhaps a little present) in a nice Christmas card or bag and attach the ornament to your gift-wrapped item or card for return to the Giving Tree.

We have received a special grant from the Carmel Mission chapter of the Knights of Columbus to pay for blankets for all the farm families.

We are very thankful for the Knights generosity, as we are for our parishioners’ continued
