Statement regarding the death of Mr. George Floyd June 3, 2020 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, The horrendous death that you and I witnessed on television last week of Mr. George Floyd has evoked anger and pain in so many of us, regardless of our race. These experiences of mistreatment do occur all too often to people of color. They stir a disgust in so many of us asking, “Why?” Given their frequency we rightfully ask, “When will this kind of thing end?” We can be better than this as a nation! This horrific event casts a spotlight on the reality of racial, criminal and economic injustice that is alive in our country. It reaffirms for me that we need to be willing to engage in a serious conversation about race relations. Before we heal the wound of racism in our country and before we start telling people what we believe, we need to hear the pain that is real and palpable for so many people today. It is my hope that our civil leaders will help us to engage in a conversation that is real and allows us to engage in honest dialogue, with the hope that substantive changes in our society can occur from our local neighborhoods to the economic and judicial system of this country. Although profound anger has been expressed in the streets this week, we must be reminded that we have many wonderful police officers who are here for you and me to protect us and are willing to assist us when we are vulnerable or in danger of any kind of hurt or pain. I am grateful for their service as ‘first responders.’ They put their lives on the line and we should have profound respect for them. Lastly I wish to address the protest, violence and destruction that we have seen in our American cities. Peaceful protest is an expression of our anger and desire to change, but the destruction of people’s property and violence against anyone is NOT a means to justice. One of my great heroes has always been the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. He inspired me as a child of color in the community I was raised and greatly influenced me in my priestly ministry. He believed strongly in calling out all injustice and to speak the truth, because at the end of the day, the truth will set us free! Let us pray for each other and for our country. May we all be instruments of healing! Sincerely in Christ,

My Jesus,
I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament.
I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into
my soul.
Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally,
come at least spiritually into my heart.
I embrace You as if You were already there
and unite myself wholly to You.
Never permit me to be separated from You.
Amen.

Scripture MessageReadings for the Week
Today’s Readings
Today we celebrate the Most Holy Trinity, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The triune nature of our God is a bedrock of our faith and also a profound mystery, one which is, to some extent, beyond our human understanding. The fact that it is a mystery should not discourage us from contemplating and seeking to understand. The mystery invites us to probe it, to immerse ourselves in it. In our efforts to understand we grow in our relationship with God. In the Gospel today, there is no mystery in the message. God loves, and so God gives. This the model for our Christian discipleship. If we love, we give, not only of ourselves but our whole selves. Since the beginning of time, God has been a gift giver. He gave us the gift of life, and the bounty of the earth to steward. He gave us His only Son, to redeem the world and each of us. Jesus gave his life on the cross. When Jesus returns to the Father we are given the Holy Spirit, who shares His sevenfold gifts with us. In gratitude, we honor God when we show our love by giving. Giving praise to God, and giving ourselves to one another. In the first reading Moses asks God to “come along in our company.” Our generous God longs to be in our company, we need only make the time and space and invite Him in. How do you invite God to be in your company? How do you feel the presence of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit in your life?

Annual Ministry Appeal 2020
For more information, visit our AMA page at carmelmission.org/2020-annual-ministry-appeal/
Dear Friends of Carmel Mission,
I hope that you and your loved ones are well. Each year at this time, parishes throughout the Diocese of Monterey are launching the Annual Ministries Appeal. By our participation in this appeal, we assist so many people to grow in faith. In this AMA campaign letter we will provide you with some idea of the huge variety of diocesan ministries that benefit as a result of your generous support of this appeal.Since I was appointed Pastor at our beautiful Mission, your support has seen us go from strength to strength. Last year, our Renew A Pew Campaign had more donors contribute than any other parish in our diocese. We also raised the largest amount and were able to renew our pews for the next generation. I hope that you find them comfortable. The first $50,000.00 raised goes to our diocese and any sum over that amount comes back to our Mission. This year our parish campaign is called: Heavenly Sounds, and has as its objective, the enhancement of the sound in our Basilica. We probably have the best music in the Diocese of Monterey. Our wonderful Choir, Cantors, and musicians add so much to our liturgies and help us raise our minds and hearts to God. We also have music events throughout the year, the Bach Festival being a prime example. It is our intention to develop our music ministry and to add to our musical calendar.A major component of our music at the Mission is our wonderful Casavant organ. This beautiful instrument adds so much to our many liturgies. The time has come when our Casavant organ requires immediate attention, if we are to continue to use it. A portion of our Heavenly Sounds Campaign will be used to replace all the electrical and computer components, which are totally out of date. We will be providing you with more detailed information soon.I know that once again I can rely on your generous support, so that we at Carmel Mission can continue to create those Heavenly Sounds.
Sincere thanks to all, Blessings, Fr. Paul, Pastor at Carmel Mission

Tuesday, June 2: Hymn — by Ralph Waldo Emerson
We love the venerable houseOur fathers built to God;—In heaven are kept their grateful vows,Their dust endears the sod. Here holy thoughts a light have shedFrom many a radiant face,And prayers of humble virtue madeThe perfume of the place. And anxious hearts have pondered hereThe mystery of life,And prayed the eternal Light to clearTheir doubts, and aid their strife. From humble tenements aroundCame up the pensive train,And in the church a blessing foundThat filled their homes again;
The Carmel Mission posts Prayers by Father Paul, Monday through Saturday at 7 am and a weekly Mass on Sundays. If there was a video that stood out to you, or if you would simply like to revisit last week’s special prayers and follow along, this section has transcribed Fr. Paul’s Daily Prayers for your enjoyment.
Daily Prayers
For faith and peace and mighty loveThat from the Godhead flow,Showed them the life of Heaven aboveSprings from the life below.
They live with God; their homes are dust;Yet here their children pray,And in this fleeting lifetime trustTo find the narrow way.
On him who by the altar stands,On him thy blessing fall,Speak through his lips thy pure commands,Thou heart that lovest all.

Wednesday, June 3: St. Pope Paul VI from “Ecclesiam Suam”
The birth of the Church and the enlightening of her prophetic consciousness are the two characteristic events which coincide with Pentecost. Together they will progress: The Church in her organization and in the development of her hierarchy and of the body of the faithful; the awareness of her own vocation, of her own mysterious nature, of her own doctrine, of her own mission will accompany this gradual development. This will be according to the desire of St. Paul: “And this is my prayer for you; may your love grow richer and richer yet, in the fullness of its knowledge and the depth of its perception.”The Church needs to reflect on herself. She needs to feel the throb of her own life. She must learn to know herself better, if she wishes to live her own proper vocation and to offer to the world her message of brotherhood and of salvation. She needs to experience Christ in herself, according to the words of the Apostle Paul: “May Christ find a dwelling place, through faith, in your hearts.”
Thursday, June 4: Lectio Divina On This Rock
Matthew 16:13-19When Jesus went into the region of Caesarea Philippi he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” They replied, “Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah, still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter said in reply, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”
Jesus said to him in reply, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father. And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”

Friday, June 5: A Prayer by St. Boniface by Apostle To the Germans
Saturday, June 6: Please Close This Door Quietly by Rowan WilliamsThe slow, loud door: pushing againsta mound of dust, dust floatingheavily in a still room; stepslowly,
Stones can deceive. The ground looksfirm, but the dust makes you blinkand feel for purchase. This ismarshland,
Difficult light to sting eyes, terrainwhose spring and tangle hides deepgaps, cold pools, old workings;careful.
Too much left here of unseen lumberdropped, knowingly or not, behindthe door to trip you while you rubawkwardly
Eternal God, the refuge and help of all your children,we praise you for all you have given us,for all you have done for us,for all that you are to us.In our weakness, you are strength,in our darkness, you are light,in our sorrow, you are comfort and peace. We cannot number your blessings,we cannot describe your love:For all your blessings we bless you.May we live as in your presence, and love the things that you love, and serve you in our daily lives;through Jesus Christ our Lord.
At naked eyes, opened on thick, still, damp, scented air, imprintedused and recycled, not clearing up,catching:
The weather of memory. Underfootlost tracks wind round an ankleand abandoned diggings, wells, mines, foundations,
Wait for your foot to find them, drop you into the unexpected chill, the snatched breath and swiftseeing,
The bird’s flap at the edgeof your eye’s world: things leftbut alive; a space shared; a stoneyielding.
