The past year has been filled with accomplishment for Students and Staff, both on and off campus, and we are proud to explore some of these achievements throughout this edition. Product Development has been an important focus of the College and we are of delighted by the introduction of Bachelor of Applied Dance, Graduate Diploma in Sports Administration and Graduate Diploma in Athletic Performance, all fantastic additions to WELCOME ACPE CHARITY PROGRAM SUCCESS This experience was made possible by one of our Alumni and ACPE lecturers, Robyn Clune. Robyn has been working with the Cambodian Children’s Fund (CCF) for over 5 years. “I saw such poverty in Asia and thought it was terribly unfair. I wanted to help others and decided to volunteer in the field of PE with the CCF, who has rescued over 700 children from poverty.” The Student Services team at the College took the initative to work with Robyn to establish a program that would give current students the opportunity to travel to Cambodia and volunteer to make a difference to the lives of the less fortunate. This initiative was a fantastic success. The students raised the funds and 13 students, accompanied by Kellie Vernon, David Maxwell (both whom are ACPE alumni and are currently employed at ACPE in the Student Services team) and Robyn Clune travelled to Cambodia for 3 weeks. They spent the first 2 weeks running Sports and PE programs for children sponsored by the CCF. Kellie Vernon, Student Services Manager said “CCF opened our eyes to the extreme poverty in other countries, giving us an appreciation of how fortunate we are in Australia. We spent time teaching both the kids and their instructors essential life skills such as first aid, swimming and general health & wellbeing. It was overwhelming how welcoming these children are despite the hardships they have experienced in their lives. We spent Week 3 building houses in a rural community outside of Phnom Penh with the locals. It was amazing to see how we can overcome cultural differences to reach a common goal. ACPE CHARITY PROGRAM SUCCESS

This experience was made possible by one of our Alumni and ACPE lecturers, Robyn Clune. Robyn has been working with the Cambodian Children’s Fund (CCF) for over 5 years.

IN BRIEFMELANIE LILLIS RECIEVES BRONZEMelanie Lillis (current ACPE student, BEPHE) forms part of Campbelltown’s Synergy Fitness Studio’s senior fitness team who recently won Bronze at the FISAF World Aerobics Championships in Queensland. The team competed in the division of Senior Fitness (Aerobic) Team. This was not their first medal, in 2010 they won Silver at Worlds held in The Netherlands. Congratulations Melanie and team Synergy!

ACPE SPONSORS NSW SWIFTSWe are proud to announce our newly formed sponsorship agreement with the NSW Swifts in 2012. We are very excited about this relationship with Netball which includes the NSW Swifts, Netball NSW and Grassroots Netball. THE COLLEGEPEA DAYIn February, ACPE held its inaugural Pre-Enrolment Day (PEA Day); a new initiative to give prospective students a taste of life at ACPE.

Students were able to get all their questions answered, there were scheduled activities, The Edge radio station broadcasted from campus and students were delighted by guest appearances from Susan Pratley (NSW Swift) and Andrew Ryan (NRL and current ACPE student, BSpBus).

STUDY SMARTStudy Smart is ACPE’s virtual learning environment, where students studying on campus and by distance education units can access a range of learning resources to support their study. ACPE lecturers use the power of the Moodle

engagement opportunities across a wide netball audience encompassing players and fans.

BEKI LEE SELECTED FOR OLYMPIC TEAMACPE congratulates Beki Lee (current ACPE student, BSpBus) on her selection for the Australian Olympic Team. Australian Athletic Chiefs submitted a list of 25 nominations, including Beki, to the Australian Olympic Committee. Beki was then chosen alongside 12 other athletes to join the Track & Field Olympic Squad. Beki will compete in the 20km walk. We are extremely proud of Beki, she has represented ACPE at Uni Games in the past and we wish her the bests of luck in her quest for gold at the London Olympics.

ACPE have a number of students currently trialling for the Olympic team, we hope to have more to report in the next edition of PACE.

NOT GOODBYE, SEE YOU SOONAngelee Boyd, Associate Dean at ACPE has taken a 12 month leave of absence from the college and has relocated with her family to Pittsburgh, USA. Angelee will still continue to support both students and staff from many miles away. She will be available for some online teaching in Semester 2 and will be sharing her respected words of wisdom with students and prospective students through regular blog posts in the near future. .

Adam Hartigan graduated from ACPE in 2007 with a Bachelor of Physical Education. In his 4th year of study, Adam completed his final practical with Patrician Brothers College, Blacktown. Impressed by his skills, the school offered Adam a teaching position in PDHPE and Mathematics/Science and allowed him 2 afternoons off a week so that he could complete his degree with ACPE. Adam still teaches at the school and coaches the school’s rugby league teams.

Adam has been busy out of the classroom too. He spent some time as Strength & Conditioning Coach with Manly Sea Eagles and worked in personal fitness and instruction. In 2009, he travelled to PNG as Assistant to Head Coach, Rohan Smith (son of NRL coach, Brian Smith), for the Tongan National Rugby League Team. He then became

CAREER DEVELOPMENT OFFICEThe ACPE Professional Experience program relaunches itself as the Career Development Office in 2012. The office will now offer more support services to better prepare students for their careers

The Career Development Office, formerly known as Professional Experience, has diversified the services that it offers students and will have a stronger focus on career management, equipping students with the skills and knowledge to proactively pursue their careers search.

Peter Rowles, Manager of the Career Development Office says “Students will be supported in taking ownership of their career direction. We will be helping students manage their career and we will provide them with the necessary tools to successfully navigate the world of work. Professional and industry experience will continue to be a core of all degree requirements however we have developed an additional three stage career management program that

Head Coach of the Sydney Roosters SG Ball team (U18’s) and was grateful to have his brothers Scott and Matt (also ACPE graduates) join his coaching team. The team finished 8th for the season and went on to win the Grand Final! They had another good season in 2011, reaching the semi finals.

This year Adam has been appointed Assistant Coach for the Roosters NYC team (U20’s), under the leadership of Jason Taylor (Ex NRL coach).

Adam says, “Through ACPE, I have created a network of friends and colleagues that has guided me into many areas of sport. I don’t see myself stopping at teaching, I want to keep an open mind to the sports industry and ACPE has provided me with an insight into the opportunities I can take advantage of with my degree.“

Career management completes the loop for the student’s professional development at ACPE and in combination with their ACPE degree provides students with the skills necessary for employment success.

Alumni are very important to the College in supporting the students as they grapple with the world of work in the ever challenging fields of sport, dance and education. The College would welcome any alumni who could offer any

of the following experiences: Education or sport industry placements, intern partnerships, engaging with students at networking events, presenting at career development conferences and mentoring students on an individual basis.

The Career Development Office can offer Alumni of the College support in the job search process including resume review and advice and advertised job opportunities.

GRADUATE RETURNS TO AUSTRALIA TO REUNITE WITH CLASSMATESRenee Wilson graduated from ACPE’s Bachelor of Physical Education in 2001. After four years teaching in rural NSW, Renee moved to London where she gained a position in one of the UK’s oldest boarding schools, Tudor Hall.

Renee initially began as a Hockey Specialist to cover a 6 month maternity leave contract; she is now second in charge of the PE department that has seven full time PE teachers, two part time and four tennis coaches.

Renee returned to Australia in August 2011 to take part in her ACPE class reunion. It was fantastic to see Renee and hear about her exciting career. She recently assisted Australian student Courtney Gorman on a gap year in the UK. Courtney is now back home and has enrolled with ACPE in the Bachelor of Health & Movement degree.

VALE - LINDA FAY TAITACPE is saddened to advise the passing of Linda Fay Tait on January 10, 2012. Linda was a graduate from the Diploma of Teaching, class of 1980.

COLLEGE FAREWELLS SANDRA COLLIERSandra Collier has been a valued member of our ACPE family for over 47 years, as both student and staff member.

Sandra first graduated from ACPE with a Diploma of Physical Education in 1967.

Following graduation, Sandra gained teaching experience with a number of prestigious Sydney schools and even taught in Athens, Greece for 2 years.

In 1993 Sandra returned to ACPE as a mature age student and completed her Bachelor of Physical Education and Bachelor of Education. Her second stint of study at ACPE is where Sandra fell in love with the history of the college. Sandra has dedicated countless time to researching our history and thanks to Sandra, ACPE can now truly appreciate its unique heritage.

In 2005, Sandra was employed as Director of Progessional Experience and later College History and Alumni Coordinator.

Sandra has made a tremendous contribution to the Alumni of our college and can be thanked for reconnected hundreds of graduates.

Sandra has been a devoted and irreplaceable member of the ACPE family, her enthusiasm and love for the college will be sadly missed on campus.

We wish Sandra all the very best as she moves onto her next adventure!

ACPE ALUMNUS’ CRICKETING SUCCESSACPE congratulates Peter Forrest on his debut for Australia in the One Day International Cricket Series. Peter was presented with his one day cap by Ricky Ponting before making 66 runs for Australia in their match against India. National selectors have dubbed him a“player of the future”. We hope to see Peter as a regular in the Australian test line up this year.

Stephen O’Keefe has been appointed as Captain of the NSW State Cricket Team for the 2011/12 season. Stephen has already represented Australia in Twenty20 cricket and will lead the NSW team whenever co- captain Michael Clarke, who also serves as the Australian team captain, is unavailable.
