ObjectivesPromote a business product or service using a two-sided, folded document. Create an original, new logo. Incorporate a least four quality images not including the logo.

Process Using InDesign I layed out a basic tri-fold design and did some test prints with the fold marks until I had the measurements correct, accounting for trimming and margins. I created a logo in Illustrator based on an animal balloon sculpture provided to me by my intended client. I simplified as much as possible so the logo is easily recognizable even at a small size.

Using Photoshop I clipped the photos and cleaned them up so they looked clean and crisp as stand alone images. To get a nice clean balloon shape I used Illustrator to trace the outline of a balloon photo, then removed some of the extra lines and anchor points. The balloon design elements are repeated throughout the design to unify the theme. Based on the photos theme of the brochure, I chose the triadic color scheme of red, blue, and yellow. In InDesign I placed all the images, logos, and shapes so the original images remained linked to their respective documents. This way I could update the original image file, update the link, and InDesign would be updated with the changes made.

ObjectivesDesign a company logo to fit a company or personal image. Make three versions of the logo - color, greyscale, and white on color.

Process After brainstorming on ideas about company names to use, I started formulating and sketching ideas based on the company name and product. Once I had some organization and refinements in my sketches I started creating the designs in Illustrator. Initially I created three different designs and asked for feedback from about a dozen different people to find out what appealed to them, what message they understood from the design, and other suggestions on how to improve.

Once I reviewed the feedback I began refining the logo, removing areas of confusion, improving the color scheme, creating more contrast, and tightening up the alignment. For instance I originally had an oldstyle font for the body copy and switched to a slab serif to make the type pop against the sans serif.

I enjoyed using Illustrator and had fun turning letters into design elements and creating my own shapes. I used the create outline and the pen tool extensively to manipulate the elements in this design.

ObjectivesCreate a logo and letterhead to fit the personality of the group it will be representing.

Process I sketching ideas on paper I decided to use a sawblade and incorporate the sawblade into the letter c in Inc. Using Adobe Illustrator I created digital versions of my ideas. I used the ellipse tool for the circle then the pen tool to create the blade teeth. Once I copied and placed the teeth on the circle I used the pathfinder tool to create one shape. After choosing my typefaces I started combining the letter c and the sawblade. I increased the tracking of the header type in order to fit the sawblade in. I decided to use a brown for the header to represent wood, then found a complimentary indigo blue to match.

The sawblades are related to the indigo but with more white. I re-used the slab serif typeface from the header in my name to re-use it and unify the design. I re-used the sawblades as water marks behind the contact info and also at the bottom of the page to contrast the size but also add repetition. I set the opacity of the watermarks to 10% so they did not overwhelm the rest of the design. The bottom sawblade is bigger to balance out the top of the letterhead.

    Program(s)/Tools Adobe Illustrator

ObjectivesDesign a business card consistent with the logo and letterhead of a business or personal image.

Process Based on the logo and letterhead previously designed, I re-used the logo, sawblade shape, and contact info to match the letterhead. I spaced them away from the edge but also shrunk them down so there was plenty of white-space so the card does not feel cluttered.

The logo is in the top-left the same as the letterhead. Placing the sawblade and cut out in the copy matches back to both the front of the business card and the stationary. I used InDesign to place a copy of the business card so I could enlarge it for visibility.

ObjectivesUsing basic photography skills, take a quality image. Adjust, size, and crop the image using Photoshop. Add text and design elements to create an 8.5in x 11in page, full bleed.

Process To begin I chose interesting objects and layed them out according to some of the basic design principles. Using Photoshop I editing the levels, sharpness, saturation, and color balance. Balancing the colors made a huge difference for this photo. I cut out the background out in Photoshop using the magic wand tool, then refined the edges to smooth out the rough edges.

Using an 8.511 canvas I brought in the photo and added the text and design elements. I used Illustrator to trace one of the chess pieces, created two versions for the two colors represented, and linked to the images from Photoshop. I used an Elephant Regular typeface to reinforce the idea of Mr. Potatohead being big and strong. The Franklin Gothic Heavy Regular sans serif typeface contrasts nicely with the header typeface and is used for the rest of the body copy.

  • Web PageDescriptionA web site using one of my original logo designs.

ObjectivesSize and optimize an original logo as a .png for a web page.Write content to describe the process of creating your logo and how it appeals to a target audience.Design a web page using HTML to display a logo and content.Acquire a working knowledge of HTML and basic understanding of CSS.Identify hex colors for web design.Compress multiple files in a zipped folder to attach as one file.

Process HTML code for the web page was created using NotePad++ text editor. The CSS code was . After creating the basic page in HTML, I added the references to a default CSS document and my logo files. I then incorporated the colors from my logo in my web page by modifying the CSS file.

I used a Google web font and added the references in the CSS and HTML file so the typefaces matched my logo type. I declared some backup fonts just in case the viewers browser didnt have these fonts. I limited the maximum size of the HTML body so it fits in most desktop browsers. The background image of the saw grows and shrinks based on the size of the browser.

ObjectivesUnify a layout with a consistent theme and dominant spiritual message. Use at least two images and blend them together gradually using masks. Also use a mask to apply a filter to at least one part of the image.

Process I created a new project in Photoshop and set the canvas to 8.5 x 11in. I confirmed the resolution of each of the three images to be used so they all worked well together. I used the tree as the background image and applied a diffuse anisotropic filter. I added the acorn image as a new layer and added a layer mask. Using the brush tool set to 100% opacity I masked away the hard edges and unneeded portions of the image. With a larger brush set to 30 opacity I blended the images together so the acorn becomes a part of the background.

Using the lasso tool and with a 20 pixel feather I cut out the picture of Christ and placed it in a new layer over the background. I repeated the layer mask and blending process so the image of Christ blends well with the rest of the background. I added type with two contrasting fonts and added a a blending mode (inner glow, drop shadow) to help the type stand out.

  • Event AdDescriptionA color event advertisement.

    Program(s)/Tools Microsoft Word

ObjectivesScan and import a high-quality image into Microsoft Word. Using only Word, design an event ad around the image to promote a fundraiser that targets a specific audience.

Process The image is a scanned copy from a magazine. After brainstorming and sketching out some basic ideas I decided to use the image to decide the color scheme and oval design elements. The orange ovals were inspired by the pumpkin roll shape, the orange color from the orange at the top center of the picture, the brown type is a darker shade of the pumpkin roll itself, the green type matches the leaf color, and the white space was left white to match the center filling swirl.

One of the project requirements was to bleed elements off the page I decided to bleed not only the image but the ovals as well. The header is center aligned and not contained inside an oval to help draw the attention in combination with the large, bold type. From there the intended flow was to see the great charity bake off type, the image, and then on down through the ovals that eventually end with the beneficiary and sponsor info. Body copy is small on purpose to keep the contrast in sizes as well as prevent a crowded feel. Other than the header the type is left justified.

  • FlierDescriptionA black and white news flier.

    Date 5/10/2015

    Course/InstructorComm 130 Section 15Emily Kunz

    Program(s)/Tools Adobe InDesign

ObjectivesUsing supplied images and body copy, design a news flier to be printed in grayscale. Logo and image are linked in InDesign and are to be saved in the same project folder to keep the links intact.

Process For this project I used Adobe InDesign. The flier required an understanding of what the most important parts of the message were. I began the project by reviewing the requirements and sketching ideas based on those requirements, the formulate stage. After reviewing my sketches I selected the best one and begin laying it out in InDesign. Once I had the elements in place I had four different people critique my design, each one helping me refine the design further.

Some of the challenges I had were too many typeface sizes, too many elements having about the same size, and not having a clear focal point. I also had a few alignment issues. I decided to incorporate some diagonals, and based on my critiques the diagonals helped make the entire design stand out. Once I reduced the number of type sizes and set the focal point the design started to become more of what I had envisioned. The refining unifying and simplifying process were helped along greatly because of the great people who critiqued the design.
